Transfer activity is particularly rampant this week, with hordes of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Managers choosing to play their winter wild cards early into January. Many are looking to pack their attacking ranks full of powerful point-devourers and compensate for their ‘Galácticos’ style spending with a bargain defence. However, your backline needn’t consist of reserve team players you’ve barely heard of to accommodate those big-hitters in midfield and up front, with plenty of worthwhile discount options available.

Wigan Athletic’s Antolin Alcaraz, priced at £4.5 million on the FPL game, is one of these ‘value’ options. The Paraguyan international is not just there to make up the numbers though; he has proven to be an integral part of Roberto Martinez’s set-up so far this season, having played in every Premier League fixture bar one (which he missed through suspension) after signing for the Latics in the summer from Belgian side Club Brugge. Don’t let the suspension put you off though, as Alcaraz is anything but a dirty player; apart from the dismissal against Manchester United, he has received just one booking so far this term.

Alcaraz has managed to chalk-up an impressive FPL return of 59 points and his magnitude to Wigan has not gone unnoticed by the Bonus Points committee, who have dealt him an hefty 10 so far, a total bettered by only one other defender, Gary Cahill of Bolton. A rather ambitious sum for a player whose team currently sit 19th in the Premier League, 1 point off bottom-placed West Ham.

As well as his low valuation and capacity to attain points, it is Wigan’s forthcoming Premier League fixtures (FUL, ars & AVL, wba, BLA, liv,) that also make Alcaraz an eye-catching choice. With the exception of a tricky clash at The Emirates -the first match of their double Gameweek 24- you would have to fancy them to achieve something from the rest of those fixtures and Roberto Martinez must be looking to this run of games as a means of rekindling his side’s season.

Just two defenders in a similar price-range have managed to score more FPL points than Alcaraz this season; Sunderland’s previous Watchlistee Phil Bardsley and Blackpool’s Ian Evatt. With an ownership of 3.9% Alcaraz proves to be slightly less popular than his counterparts, so could be seen as a good “differential” over the coming weeks.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Hi. Got Gerrard and need to get him out. Cant afford Fabregas, so I need to think diferent. Thinking of Dempsey, Davies or N’Zogbia because they have DGW coming up. Are there other options. Liverpool midfilders maybe?
Im also going to get in Berba or Rooney for Tevez for the DGW.

    My team:
    Foster Gordon
    Rafael Coleman Foley Eardley Hughes
    VDV Nasri Nani Adam Gerrard
    Tevez Torres Carrol

    Thanx

So many 'value' players, who to choose?

    Adams (transfer doubts)
    Brunt
    Etherington
    Albrighton (rotation?)
    S Davies (rotation?)
    Jarvis (fixtures?)
    Nzogbia
    Onuoha (injury?)
    Elmohamady (bench warmer?)
    Coleman (rotation?)
    Kompany (rotation?)
    Huth

Don't really want another Citeh player and Nzogbia has never really worked for me, so I think that my favourites for the next few weeks are Coleman and Etherington.

So Newcastle w/out their two best players (Barton a close third), Sunderland excellent at home and in decent form...

That 3/1 bet on Sunderland is HUGE! Shame max stake is only £10.44.

In 1720, Upon speculation that trade with South America would yield great profits, companies which falsely purported to engage in such trade were formed. Thus 'worthless' shares were traded, and as a result authorities placed severe restrictions on the formation of new companies. This changed with the realization that corporations were key to Britains economic development, and these rules were relaxed, by way of the Companies Act 1862 which allowed the formation of these companies. - There you go straight from my revision notes.

Team for this week. No WC.
    Foster
    Baines, Kolarov, Ferdinand
    Malouda, Nasri(c), Nani, VdV, Adam
    Drogba, Elmander

    Subs: Krul,Dj Campbell, Foley, Konchesky.

Thinking of transferring out konch for Walker. At only 4 and an upcoming dgw he seems like a bargain. Its a bit of a risk but I'm just going to hope Villa dont sign anyone else in that pos and that he nails down the spot. Think I will be okay for next week then. Plan to get either Rooney or Berbs in depending on how Drogba performs this weekend.

    Screw the generic WC teams:

Hart/Cheapest keeper who will never play

    R Johnson/Kolarov (he'll come good)/Alcaraz/Elmo/Random £5m defender

    Nani/VDV/Lamps/Adam/Dempsey or NZogbia

    RVP/Tevez/Bent

This season, any team shot down on here is probably doing very well. See the Scout Picks as a prime example.

      Well...

I (and many on here it seems) prefer Adam + Cesc to Bale and Nolan.

      You're missing a City striker.

Vidic can be downgraded to Rafael, Baines and Coleman might be a bit too much Everton

Djourou is another popular cheapie for the next few weeks

7/2 Blackpool win against West Brom I noticed while doing Super6...

That can't be right surely?! I know Blackpool are a bit of an all over the place team but they're playing well and West Brom... really, really aren't, even if their defence is (potentially) a bit better now. I was thinking of starting Adam and Campbell against them, not a good idea?

Everyone seems to enjoy the Valley! Not sure if that's because they often leave with three points or not. 🙂

Basically, Tosey, he ain't Dennis Wise, so I'm happy with the appointment, but you're right - bringing in a popular player as manager is not often successful.

They say "people in glass house shouldn't throw stones". However, if you wanted to hit something (outside of your house) with a stone (from inside your house), a glass house would be the best kind of house.

You can see your target, and stand a good chance of breaking through the glass to hit it.

People in glass houses are the perfect people to be throwing stones.

Putherover, can't give decent advice if we can't see your entire team. However, on point 2, I would not replace Gerrard with Kyut. Some one else. But what's the rest of the team?

    Hi Guys

I have 1 free transfer. I will do Drogba to Tevez(c)

P Robinson is out, Cleverley is out
Carrol, Konchesky and Kolarov are doubtful

So I have a good chance to only have 10 valid players if I do not spend 4 pts for extra transfer.

My thinking is to do Konchesky to Alcaraz, who plays at home v Fulham and who has a DGW next week.

Is it worth the 4 pts?

Where did you see that Kolarov is doubtful?

both konchesky and kolarov are rotation risks

          carrol is back from injury

I guess the probability that either Kolarov or Carrol play this week end is above 50%.

All you have to think is: Will my transfer get me more than 4 points?

If you think it will, do it. If you think it won't, don't.

Seeing as you have 3 doubtful players, there is a slim chance you will field 11, and get at least 2 points extra. In that case the question becomes "will my sub get 4 MORE points than the bench".

I would risk it until you hear concrete news, and field all 3 doubts to cover.

    Foster/Al-Habsi
    Ferdinand/Baines/Rafael/Skrtel/The Greek
    Nani/Bale/Nasri/Adam/VDV
    Tevez/Carroll/Elmander

    4.0 in the bank.

I can field 8 for the DGW with two freebies over the next two weeks so less inclined to use the WC next week.

So I guess it boils down to whether I take out the Greek this week or next week really.

    Opinions and views always appreciated.

    Thanks.

Gents. A wildcard team for GW27, if you will:

    Foster

    Coleman, Dann, Ridgewell, Djourou

    Cahill, vdV, Nasri(c), Brunt

    RVP, Carroll

    Bench: Rafael, Nani, Tevez.

Tbh this is a bit of a pointless exercise as there's a month between now and then. But it was fun nonetheless. Of course if Birmingham make that League Cup final its out!
