Kenny Dalglish made an unremarkable return to European football with Liverpool and he masterminded his troops to a 0-0 stalemate in Prague. The draw with Sparta has Liverpool well placed for a last 16 Europa League place, while Dalglish had the opportunity to take a passing glance at some fringe players – including Joe Cole.

Liverpool’s lineup saw the likes of Sotorious Kyrgiakos partner Jame Carragher in defence, while 19-year-old Danny Wilson was deployed at left-back in a 4-4-2, allowing Glen Johnson to revert to the right full-back role. David Ngog took the striker’s role with Raul Meireles again given the job of providing the support, as he looked to prolong his extraordinary scoring streak.

Dalglish was without groin injury victim Steven Gerrard and he took another casualty in midfield on the night as Fabio Aurelio suffered his own groin injury. Dalglish had this to say on the Aurelio setback…

“It’s an adductor strain. It’s not too bad. Midfield was the last place we needed an injury. Obviously Fabio would prefer to play somewhere else than midfield but needs must.”

Aurelio’s injury saw him replaced by Joe Cole on 38 minutes. That shackled Meireles in a deeper midfield role as Cole was pushed up as support for Ngog.

This was Joe Cole’s first appearance under Dalglish following recurring knee problems for the former Chelsea trickster. Cole has been a non-starter for Liverpool since his arrival at Anfield and in Fantasy terms his inability to maintain fitness and cement a starting role has been a major disappointment. The subject cropped up in Dalglish’s post-match interview, and just as he has done with new-signing Andy Carroll, the Liverpool boss stressed the need for patience with Cole.

“Joe’s a valuable asset for us but obviously he’s not going to pick up his form immediately. We’re not going to expect him to be the Joe Cole who came here in the summer straight away…Form’s temporary and class is permanent: that’s where we stand with Joe Cole. We’ll give him a bit of time to get himself up to speed and then we can see him produce something for us.”

The second-leg with Sparta falls before the Gameweek 28 trip to Upton Park. Steven Gerrard and Dan Agger remain injury doubts for that, although Dalglish offered us plenty of reassurance on their situation – indicating that they will be back in the frame…

“We’ll see when we go back. I don’t think he’ll be too long before he’s fit and I don’t think Daniel Agger will be too much of a problem either.â€

Martin Kelly and Martin Skrtel were also rested last night; both look likely to be back in the equation but it will be interesting to see if Dalglish keeps them preserved for the West Ham trip. Fantasy Managers will certainly be hoping that this is the case.

“We left Martin Kelly and Martin Skrtel out as well because young Martin Kelly has been through an awful lot in the last seven games and has been playing with a few bumps and bruises. This gave him the opportunity to refresh himself, and Martin Skrtel got injured at Chelsea but carried on – and we didn’t want to take a chance.”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Did you know that if Chelsea or Spurs win the champions league and finish outside of the top 4 they still qualify next year as holders and the 4th place side misses out. Now that would be funny.

I don't think it would be funny at all if that happened to Spurs. Now if, on the other hand, it happened to Chelsea who've been desperate to win it since Abramovic took over, that would be HILARIOUS!

Got an extra spot, Liverpool had to start from round 1.

The rule has since been changed so the holders take the 4th-placed team's spot.

The loophole that allowed 5 teams to enter in 2005 has been closed. Only 4 allowed MAX from each country and the holders always qualify.

My LOL would be Citeh finishing 4th and not qualifying mainly due to Mancini trying his very best to finish 4th, the very least they require to keep his job.

They've played United and Arsenal twice and have entertained Chelsea and been to Spurs. They have won once, forced three goalless draws and lost twice, scoring just two goals in those six matches.

    Did anyone see this.

Greek side Aris Thessaloniki destroyed thousands of copies of their Europa League matchday programme when it was revealed they'd printed a fake picture of the Manchester City squad by mistake.

Bungling club officials sourced the image from the internet - and failed to notice that it depicted the Premier League club's ranks bolstered by the likes of Wayne Rooney, Kaká, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Lionel Messi, Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba, Mesut Ozil... and Where's Wally!

City officials apparently saw the funny side of the mistake but their hosts were so embarrassed that they ordered the offending publication to be pulped.

A handful of copies made it through the net, however, and are now being sold on eBay as collector's items.

At least the Mirror maintains a glimmer of a socialist past, unlike most other tabloids that claim to represent the people but happily sell them out to a bunch of fox-munching, banker-humping Tories. Oh, sorry, wrong meeting... (to quote a certain comedian)

To be fair, I know it's a tabloid, but I hardly ever have anything to do with it. I've never liked tabloids or the Daily Mail, but the tabloids I think of are the Sun, and... the Star... Hmm, I can't really think of many. I think I have a mental block.

          Don't actually buy newspapers anymore.

When it comes to sport there isn't much of an agenda, most of the papers have decent journos and I just ignore the rumour tittle tattle. The only time the Daily Mail would come in useful is if I'd run out of toilet paper.
Of all the tabloids the Mirror is the least sensationalist and the least capitalist. They also aren't elitist like some of the broadsheets, so it's a decent compromise.

I'm with yas here guys. He had a pathetic 7 week stint in my team from GW16 to GW22 where his scores read: 3, 0, 1, 4, 0, 1, 0.

But with City having 3 home games in the next four, he looks like the easiest route to City clean sheets and possible attacking returns. I'm pretty sure he'll be coming back in either this gameweek or next. GRRRRR!

Since I've already written this season off (90 points behind my little brother 😳 ) I'm almost hoping that Kolarov doesn't do too much between now and the end of the season, so he'll still be a bargain next year!!

Very true but the problem is he gets in the way of the Sczczczney/Bergovic rotation which works near-perfectly for the rest of the season.

Having Sczczczcney allows me 3 ARS to bench and still get 11 out in 28.

Wish Andy had put Lennon in that poll. I think there's a fair few who were not too impressed with that 2 minute cameo at the weekend.

He really was. I'm intrigued by young Fabio though, the few times I've had the chance to watch him he's looked like a more polished and intelligent version of Rafael, and that's not bad is it.

I don't question Evra's quality but half the season has passed and he's been one of the poorest United performers imo, at least of the members of the strongest XI.

Fabio will be first choice after Evra, but you can't have too rookie full-backs in your first XI.

From most accounts, Fabio will be better than Rafael, but luckily for Rafael there is little competition at RB.

Even so, he isn't at the stage where his name is a cert on the team sheet. It will be though, at the time Fabio is ready to come in at left back.

Evra is still one of best left backs in Europe. Fair enough his form hasn't been brilliant this season but it's his first bad spell in 5 years.

Fabio is a raw talent. I have to admit though, I'm very concerned by his inability to finish 90 mins. In the games I have seen him start he is regularly getting injured or that time when he was sent off for a "rugby tackle".

Evra's form has been terrible this year, like Fletcher, there appears to be some kind of hangover from last season for some reason, where both players I feel were still at the top of their game.

While Fletch will find form again, I am just concerned that this may have been a lateral move by United, not progress by any means.

I should say as a United fan Evra has been my favourite player for the last five seasons, always energetic, always dangerous going forward, but his head just doesn't seem to be in the game this season, and i had thought it might have been time to cash in.

              We will see I suppose.

The Liverpool game last night was one of the most boring un-eventful games of football i've seen in a while. Suprised it wasn't mentioned.

Maybe i'm just bitter they ruined my 180quid accumulator.

        Liverpool always ruin my accumulators..

Subbed n'gog off for skrtel around the 70 minute mark. nice attacking subsitution there, he was playing for a draw from the get go!

They used to be a shoe-in on my accum in yetsteryear.

Also used to have Kuyt as first goalscorer which gave pretty decent returns.
