After being substituted in the 53rd minute of Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool last Sunday, Rafael Van der Vaart – who also scored the opening goal in the match – has confirmed that he is suffering with a stretched calf. The influential midfielder has stressed that he will do all he can and battle on to prove his fitness ahead of the final game of the season against Birmingham at White Hart Lane.

Connecting with fans through his official Twitter account, the Dutch international made the announcement:

“Stretched my calf a bit last Sunday against Liverpool but will do everything to make the last game of the season!”

Van der Vaart holds a very healthy Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership (27%) and, with his early withdrawal at Anfield, those managers – including 8 of the top 10 FPL – will have been anticipating an announcement. Today’s news will be met with a mixed reception however. While Van der Vaart seemingly has a chance of figuring in Sunday’s game, he could also miss out entirely or have his pitch time cut considerably once again.

Even though he has been considered a doubt since the victory at Anfield, media silence on Van der Vaart’s situation, together with his reputation this season, has seen him climb to fourth in our Captain’s Poll with 10% of the vote. A home clash against a faltering Birmingham offers potential profits and the Dutchman is understandably a leading contender for the armband. Van der Vaart has been in FPL staple for many a Manager this term, fetching a tally of 165 points which includes 13 goals and 9 assists.

For many this final gameweek could prove crucial and, with Van der Vaart holding such a prominent place in a high number squads, his situation over the coming days will need to be monitored carefully – the midfielder’s appearance on Sunday looks likely to have major significance to our fortunes as Fantasy Managers and those of Birmingham City. Check out our Twitter stream for all the latest.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Would having Tevez AND Berbatov be a genius move considering that they are definite starters, tied 21-21 for the golden boot and are bound to score?
at the cost of an 8pt hit though, and would have to do Vidic to Dawson too, who will probably keep a clean sheet.

This game is so much harder when you and your rival are so close. For the last 2 months I've been about 40 points off him and have been so laid back about my team, not really thinking about it until Thursday but this week everytime I load the laptop up I'm straight onto my team. Crazy!

Lampard could be crucial in the Everton game so I would be reluctant to remove him, Odem, if he plays, will most likely score, so Tevez needs to score 3 in order for you to profit with a hit.

If Odem is fit I would prefer Hernanez OUT Berbatov IN and Silva OUT N'Zogbia IN for a 4 point hit, and play:

      Foster
R.Johnson/Walker/Luiz (Huth and Vidic out most likely)
      N'Zogbia/Lampard/VDV/Kuyt
      RVP/Odem/Berbatov

Alot depends on injuries for you, if VDV is out, then do him out for N'Zog, also, you may only have 2 defenders playing if Luiz doesn't make it, but there won't be too many clean sheets this week id say.

    or

Need to make room for Tevez who I ran from week 1 - week 33

    Please help Guys.

I’m 1 point behind on a h2h league and pretty certain of a win this week. However the leader is playing a friend who still has a wild card, they’ve said I can use as I please.

    The leaders team is:
    Hart
    Hangeland,Skrtel,Baines (Huth,Gohouri)
    Kuyt,Adam,Nani,Yaya,(Dempsey)
    Suarez,Odem,Van Persie

If you could choose a team to destroy this one, what would it be?

Essentials for this GW - Tevez, Nzogbia, Berbatov, Dawson, Hangeland, VDV(if he Plays), Lampard. And then choose cheaper players from clubs fighting relegation. Good luck to your friend and to yourself.

Seriously thinking about not getting Berbatov.

I don't know, but I have a feeling now that he won't do anything. It looks like a fail waiting to happen. It's playing the fixture too much.

    I might just do:

    Rooney > Tevez
    Silva > Kuyt/Maxi/Modric

No hit. Hits at this late stage are really hard to justify.

Considering getting them both in but not sure if its worth the hits.
think Rooney to Tevez might look the sensible option after him scoring two last night.

      +1

Look at the team they will put out, he won't get the support like he does when he has Rooney, Nani, Giggs around him. Tevez is the one to get this week for me.

I think I'm taking a hit to get Tevez, but I'm captaining him I think so will kind of be justified a lot more.

this is a MASSIVE rant so feel free to ignore or add your own.

I HATE this game sometimes. No scratch that all that the time. And I hate my rival.

He genuinely knows so little about football, the lad was one of those rugby playing toffs from uni so he has no idea about any footbally 'history' like liverpool in the 80's, utd's treble - he couldnt even name last year's champion's league finalists ffs!

this year I've put so much effort into fpl, I lurk on here but usually clock in about ten hours a week. maybe evebn twenty. when I take gambles they've always been backed up by research, always looking for a good deal and differentials etc.

I outscored him most weeks and had a near insurmountable lead by january! All he has done is get lucky with autosubs and auto captains. The jammy fudge picked lampard against blackpool and rooney against west ham as captain, and I just KNOW he did it because those were the only two players he's probably heard of.

Most of his other transfers are stupid or copying other people, I don't think he ever knew about double gameweeks.

I am so so gutted, he's now sixty points ahead after having hangeland and walker come off the bench. And to top it off he's going on holiday with his ridiculously fit wife(who the **** gets married at 24???) to some beach paradise while I try and forget how dead end my job is by doing **** all and going on here for example. To add to his jamminess his mrs has a VILLA in the madlives because her folks are loaded, all I can hope is that it absolutely p!!ses it down, I think it might as it's june. The one upshot to all this is he probably won't bring in tevez and berba and I will, and maybe I'll catch him...somehow.

    yes i'm bitter and anrgy.

Actually your mate sounds like a fairly decent bloke.

And if he'd drop his holiday packing to ring you up and make sure you're ok then I'd say you've got one hell of a true friend there.

Friends like that don't grow on trees. A silly game of fantasy football shouldn't come between you and him.

Only way I can get Tevez this week is a straight swap for Van Persie or to take out either Lampard/Nani/VdV for a cheaper option and that would be a points hit.

Don't really think it is worth it?

Getting cold feet about bringing Nani in. Even though he's unlikely to start, is SAF going to risk him in case anything happens to Park or Valencia?

That's the big question, could make or break plenty of mini-leagues. I'm sure there will be an FFS article on it in the next couple of days.

      I'd say Berbatov.

assuming both play, i would favour berbs.

berbs - at home, bpool cant defend and man u playing without fear, but he has no form and little game time of late

tevez - bolton at home can be pretty stubborn, man city away dont usually score too many and lets not forget tevez was playing an understrength stoke team last night - still looked good though

    Foster, Begovic
    Walker, Luiz, Dawson, Huth, R.Johnson
    Adam, Modric, Silva, vDV, N'Zogbia
    Bent, RvP, Carroll

32 points behind the leader. Should i have any hope of finishing first? I have 5.3 in the bank and 1 transfer.

That's the problem, there's a risk, not everyone thinks the same so he might stick with who he has.
