After being substituted in the 53rd minute of Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Liverpool last Sunday, Rafael Van der Vaart – who also scored the opening goal in the match – has confirmed that he is suffering with a stretched calf. The influential midfielder has stressed that he will do all he can and battle on to prove his fitness ahead of the final game of the season against Birmingham at White Hart Lane.

Connecting with fans through his official Twitter account, the Dutch international made the announcement:

“Stretched my calf a bit last Sunday against Liverpool but will do everything to make the last game of the season!”

Van der Vaart holds a very healthy Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership (27%) and, with his early withdrawal at Anfield, those managers – including 8 of the top 10 FPL – will have been anticipating an announcement. Today’s news will be met with a mixed reception however. While Van der Vaart seemingly has a chance of figuring in Sunday’s game, he could also miss out entirely or have his pitch time cut considerably once again.

Even though he has been considered a doubt since the victory at Anfield, media silence on Van der Vaart’s situation, together with his reputation this season, has seen him climb to fourth in our Captain’s Poll with 10% of the vote. A home clash against a faltering Birmingham offers potential profits and the Dutchman is understandably a leading contender for the armband. Van der Vaart has been in FPL staple for many a Manager this term, fetching a tally of 165 points which includes 13 goals and 9 assists.

For many this final gameweek could prove crucial and, with Van der Vaart holding such a prominent place in a high number squads, his situation over the coming days will need to be monitored carefully – the midfielder’s appearance on Sunday looks likely to have major significance to our fortunes as Fantasy Managers and those of Birmingham City. Check out our Twitter stream for all the latest.

With Kenny backing Carroll today, I assume he's gonna play him and Suarez up together again on Sunday. Do people think that means Kuyt's likely to return another 2 pointer? Enough to make him a transfer candidate for N'Zogbia?

I'm gonna try and resist a hit this time Hunter, and that means I can't afford either Berbs or Tevez in a single move. So I'm looking for the best one hit wonder.

It funny how all the people who were desperate to bring in rodrigues , kuyt and suarez one week ago (chasing previous points) are now desperatly shipping them out for berbs , tevez and nzog
chasing last weeks points again (tev nzog) and chasing dreams (berbs)

I agree it's weird seeing people trading out people like Odem or even RVP, consistent deliverers for players with not great fixtures. But the various extra motivations of the last game are a real draw though, very hard to resist.

The leader of my mini league is only 12 points ahead, help needed please with my team

    Foster (Begovic)

    Baines, Cahill, Luiz, Foley, Djourou
    VDV, Kuyt, Silva, Adam, Barton
    Carroll, Rooney, Van Persie

Who should my starting eleven be and who should I transfer in this week, looking to do maybe 2 or 3 tranfers (-4 or -8 hit)

    Thanks

Depends on your rivals team but the more hits you take the more your team has to score in order to overcome the lead.

I wouldn't do more than 2 and frankly you could do Rooney>Berbatov/Tevez and leave it there.

If you need differentials then Carroll>Fletcher or VDV>Modric if VDV loses fitness battle might also be worthwhile.

...and captaincy depends on your rivals

NZogs is a good shout but maybe swap out either VDV or Silva based on fitness. I also think Toon at home against WBA could be pretty open and Barton has a chance to pick up points.

tosey - if you're still there and not watching the game? I was hoping to ask you about your tripling up strategy. Like...

    - would you do it again? Are you gonna start your team next season set up like that?
    - does it depend whether there are teams with the mix of fixtures, defensive potential and low enough price?
    - When a team goes crap (like Sunderland's decline from defensive returns) is it a big pain to have to transfer out so many players?

Sorry if you've already gone into it lots before, but I'm always interested in the merit of proper strategies like that, rather than just focusing on individual players.

i started trebling up gwk18 but it didnt really work as liverpool had games cancelled. althought they got me a cpl cleanies i wouldnt ever treble on just one team again as if they hit poor form ur fooked

im starting next season with 2 lots of 3 like i have with brum n stoke as if team A has socking form u can play the 3 from team B while replacing team A if taht makes sense

i was around 25k when i started trebling and have gone up since

    People have short memories.

Van persie has been a great captains choice recently , yet a couple of goals for tevez against a broken stoke side has everyone clammering.

Reasons not too dismiss Van Persie

    1) Been scoring nearly every game
    2) Been picking up bonus points
    3) Arsenall need to win
    4) Fulham have only one thing to play for. A european place
and how do they get this place ? By not having players booked.
Think about it , fulhams one objective is to avoid bookings.
They going to play like pussies

    = capt van persie

Is the Fair Place really that tight? Like a card or two would lose it for them? I wouldn't ever dismiss RVP, and I may consider him, but I also wouldn't dismiss Tevez. Sadly I can't get him so I should just agree with you wholeheartedly and leave it at that!

Plenty on here who are doing very similar (although there are mids I'd prefer to Nani), so nothing crazy.

Depends on your league status, but for me it's too big a risk paying to drop players like that (unless people like Odem are confirmed injured). If they get some points then their replacement really has a lot to do to get you into profit. But it's sooo tempting just to make it fun.

    WARNING. TEVEZ ALERT.

Bolton are currently Shit Hot at home (inferior only to Man. United, Chelsea & Man. City in the last 6 games).

Manchester City are currently Piss Poor away from home (1 win in 8 games this year, scoring only 5 times).

Carlos Tevez has scored only ONCE in that sequence.

Personally, I'm going with the guy who has scored just as many goals despite having 5 hours less pitch time. He also has a much more favourable home fixture, the place where he has scored 17 of his 21 goals.

Go Berbatov(C) and don't run the risk of feeling like a total fanny on Sunday night!

Bolton have conceded 5 goals in their last 2 home games, 7 in the last 3. City will be playing a full strength team. I have faith in the ugly bastard.

Joint first in my league with 3rd 3 points behind:

    Begovic (Foster)
    Luiz Vidic Coleman (Hangeland Walker)
    Yaya Sessesgnon(C) A.Young VDV (Adam)
    Odem Drogs RVP

1 free and 1.1 in the bank.

Vidic could be rested ahead of the final. Luiz could be on the bench because of Alex. Coleman might also be on the bench. Which one of those three do i transfer out?

Apart from my defence how's my team looking? Sessesgnon(C) too much of a risk?

Wouldn't transfer any defenders out as you can field 3 no probs....personally i'd play Hangeland and Walker over other 3 as not one of them is guarenteed a start....

....again, i'd have Adam starting without a doubt, in fact i'm serioulsy considering captaining the big lump...

....only transfer i'd be considering is Drogba to Tevez

Don't see the logic of putting Hangeland on the bench at home to Arsenal. Play him and Walker and Coleman. Cleansheets look minimal. 100% sure Vidic will be rested.

You'll need to keep an eye on the injuries to Odem and VDV, but Drogba out for Berbs and Odem (if injured) out for Fletcher would be my moves with that team.

      Oh...and don't captain Sessesgnon. Berbs?
