With almost two thousand votes now gathered in the goalkeeper of the season poll, itโ€™s time to move our Team of the Season voting on to the defence.

Our new poll is now open on the front page. You have four votes available to you, allowing you to select the group of defenders that you feel have had the biggest impact on our Fantasy season. As before, you should take into account not only their point returns, but also their value from Fantasy perspective.

Your votes will help shape our thinking for our Team of the Season โ€“ with coverage beginning early next week. A midfielders poll will follow tomorrow evening with voting on forwards taking place over the weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Final week question for y'all...

If you're so far ahead/chasing a ridiculous lead in your minileague and thus can afford yourself the luxury of/have no option but taking a bunch of hits to try and get the dream team this week... What would your dream team look like?

    Folks,

My other half's team (which I'm looking after) is in the final-week playoff to win a H2H league, with money at stake. I'd saved the wildcard in the hope this would happen so I can hand-pick a team.

Aside from Tevez and Berbatov, who do people see as the very best picks this week? Thoughts very much appreciated. Cheers

If VDV is out then I'd go for him... If not, then VDV is the obvious choice. Could even get both, Spurs are one of only a few teams with a decent fixture, who also have something still to play for.

Odd that we've had 37 weeks and two wildcards yet there are still lots of people who are short of players for the final game week.

What's going on? Has everyone just got caught by the late injuries or wider doubts about players rested?

      Foster,(Al-Habsi),
      Coleman,Simpson,Djourou,(Luiz,Jiranek),

Can only vote 1 at the mo but for me the Best 4 defenders this year...

A.Cole - People have short memories. Easy pre-season choice and for the first 9 gameweeks he was superb. 63 points in those opening 9, averaging 7 points per gameweek. I'm sure some of his former owners will resent that he tailed off along with Chelsea badly after GW9 and that they kept him for too long but they should be grateful for those consitently good scores to start the season off. From GW1 - GW20 he was the top scoring player in my team 3 times. For a defender that is impressive.

Huth - I wasn't fortunate enough to have him when he got his 15pts in GW19 but I got him right before he posted that fabulous 19pts in GW26 which included 2 goals and an assist (unprecedented input from a defender). That GW26 score was truly remarkable as his side conceded twice and unlike Hangeland's 21pt haul in GW37 he did not have CS points to prop up his score. Any defender with two gameweeks like that deserves to be counted among the season's best.

Hangeland - The 21 points he received in GW37 earns him a spot, no further explanation is required but I will do anyway. I wonder if that is some kind of record... 11 points in GW11 and 12 points in GW22 had been the highlights of his fantasy season prior to his double gameweek in GW34. Some of you may remember a massive rant I posted here weighing up the debatable merits of the DGW34 teams and I identified Hangeland as the must have player for that week. I was wrong, it was Dempsey, however Hangeland did pick up a juicy 14 points in GW34. If like me you held on since then you probably would have also benefited from the 21 points last week. In fact since I brought him in he has been the top scoring player in my team 2/4 weeks.

Baines - Well he's the top scoring defender isn't he? He's just a legend and ever since he wrestled them penos off Arteta he's got even more lucrative. I remember wanting him pre-season but not thinking he would live up to his new "inflated" price-tag. I was wrong. My personal experience is that I finally gave in prior to Everton's double in GW29 and got him. Kept him until GW33 and in those 5 gameweeks he got me 43 points (8.6 per week). May have shipped him too early as well. Top defender.

Good writeup, I voted for three of them too, except Hangeland as he just lucked out at a point where everybody seem to have him and Luiz didn't play. Blah!

Quick not about Huth though, his goal/assist tally were not completely unprecedented. If we go back to 2004 John Arne Riise hit 2 goals and 2 assists in Liverpool's 5-0 win over WBA. At 27 points it's still the highest ever single gameweek score I think.

I think the best defender points tally I've ever got was Ryan Taylor at home to Derby. He was playing in midfield and scored both goals in a 2-0 win. Only got 2 BPs though!

I then did captain him a few weeks later, at home to Reading. He didn't start, but came on just before 30 minutes for Melchiot. Kept a clean sheet! Probably the luckiest break I've ever had* in this game, because it was before auto captaincy.

*either that or BAE coming off my bench in the first gameweek of last season for Rio. He scored the one and only goal of his career in that game!

              Haha.

Captaining players against Derby that season was probably the safest route to good scores we'll ever see in this game.

Great stuff that link, I wish someone signed Leroy Lita again. He used to do so well for me in my first proper season of FPL.

Steve Watson scored a hat trick when listed as a defender for Everton in 03/04. Don't remember the exact points, but 3 x 6 for the goals, 2 for playing, 4 for clean sheet and 3 bonus = 27.

No, no massive revamp, not sure why they only started recording history from then. Annoying because I think in 04/05 I had a blinder! Can't remember my overall rank, just that I absolutely walked all my private leagues.

The only real changes have been minor tweaks in regards to rules (BPs/captaincy etc), other than that it looks almost identical today as it did back then. If it aint broke...

I've worked out that my first season would have been 05/06, the year Wham went up. Still have fond memories of captaining Henry against an injury devastated Middlesborough the next season. 7-1, hat-trick and 2 assists, 23 pts.

Have to say that this website does take the shine off such glorious achievements. With all the discusion that goes on it would be the obvious choice, but back then it was a solo stroke of genius.

I've had all four at some point. Hangeland and Huth's mega scores for me this season will remain the stuff of legend.

I often like to justify my hits with a long-term view. You only have one gameweek here though so if you're gonna take a hit you need to be pretty damn sure that you believe this person will score at least 4 points more than the one you replace.

It would be good in the sense that it means no one else will have him (he'll be world class one day)! But not at all sure if he's ready for the PL. Signing him, and then loaning him out to some good European side would be ideal, but I can't imagine that he'd want that.

Defending a 14 point lead atm guys. Another rvial is 21 points behind.

      My team:

      Foster

      Hang Luiz Zabaletta

      Lamps Kuyt O’Hara Yaya

      Odem Drog RvP

      “Subs” Jarvis R.Johnson Coleman

My sub will be drog for tevaz / berb.

      My rivals team:

      Szczesny

      Vidic Samba Hang

      Maxi VDV Yaya Nani

      RVP Hernandez Carool

      "subs" Luis Wilshere Givet.

I think the only sub he will make is to bring in either tev or berb.

You guys think I should make another change? Like N'zog in for yaya? It will be a 4 point hit though. Any advice is appreciated, as there are 20 smackers on this.

Fergie said he would rest Chicharito if they wrapped up the title at Blackburn.

There is no way he will risk Rooney.

That leaves you with Berbs and Owen. Berbs is tied in the golden boot.

Wickham will be bought for £8-12m this summer -probably by Spurs or maybe Newcastle. A good U21 championship and it'll be at the top end of that range...!

I do enjoy that my rival has told me what he's doing this week thus allowing me to plot my differentials exactly.
In a nut shell he's taking an 8 pt hit to get in Nzogs, Tevez (c) and Walters reducing his lead to 16 pts. Should I:
      A) Torres > Berba (C)
      B) Torres + Suarez > Berba (c) + Tevez (Cover Tevez but with a different captain - back to 20 points to catch up)
      C) Torres > Tevez (c) (Leave me with 16 points behind and hope to make that up out the rest of my team)

Yeh, so much will happen, can't wait for next season!

I can see snejder going, i don't think he'll return to real, and barcelona don't particularly need him
So, one may suggest its between Man U and City. For me, ferguson seems to have identified three options - goalie, defender and midfielder. Man city might only be buying him just because he's world class, but man u actually need him.

I'm not saying he's defo going to Man U, it's just i wouldn't be suprised if City end purchasing him

        Downing to Liverpool?!

Young is more likely to go to them, united already have nani and valencia so maybe a winger is not their main priority

Der Weil is interesting, i reckon that's a big bidding war waiting to happen

Young to Liverpool seems the better move for him with Nani, Valencia and Park at Utd, however he would prefer to move to Old Trafford. Nani may be sold as he has been moaning about being dropped for big matches and hasnt been offered a new contract after his good season. Also cant see Villa selling both wingers.

Just bored and threw a few transfers out there!

As an Ajax fan I have seen a lot of van der Weil. I would rather we keep him of course. He is a good player but not very good defensively. I certainly wouldn't get too excited about him being an improvement on Bosingwa or Sagna.

I have said it before about Sneijder too - I can't see him moving to Man Utd. Firstly he has played in Amsterdam, Madrid & Milanm can't see him wanting to move to Manchester. Also it is unlikely that Jolanthe would allow it or that Utd couldn't afford his wages.

Agreed on VDW. The year before the WC he was very good, but this year, partly due to a slight change in the system and who played on right midfield/right wing, he hasn't been anywhere near as good. I'd like to see him stay another year at Ajax because the potential is there, but if he leaves for a lot of money, the joke really is on the club forking over the cash.

He was fine in the world cup final. I don't think there's much pressure in england, or spain for that matter, it's just a higher level of opponents.
I'm fine with selling Stekelenburg, obviously he's very good, but Vermeer is good enough as a replacement. Vertonghen is the real worry.

What do people think of the Wolves v Blackburn game?

I can't see it being overly high scoring and could see Blackburn sneaking it but thats just a hunch based on Blackburn looking fairly solid of late and not trusting Wolves in games you expect them to win.

Anyhow just wondering if for a differential Blackburn players might be worth a punt? Samba or maybe Martin Ollson?

I doubt that. A draw is of very little use to either team. Obvously it's better for us as we are ahead of them on goal difference but if we draw with Wolves and the teams below win then we both go down! I expect both teams to try and win the game for an hour or so and see what the situation is elsewhere.

Not really. There's a reason that Arsenal are miles above these clubs in the table - because they have better players.

Samba, Cahill, Parker and N'Zogbia have all been in the Premier League for ages now, and still play for bottom half teams. Why would signing them make Arsenal any better?

Isn't that the problem though, that he isn't rated because he doesn't play for a fashionable club.

I asked this question the other day and got ridiculed by DBRonaldo:

If Tony Adams was playing at Blackburn now and was in his mid 20's, would Wenger even consider signing him?

Seems like Scott Parker is pretty highly rated, and West Ham just finished bottom, comfortably.

Just because West Ham are bottom doesn't mean Parker is a bad player. There are 10 other players in that team.

In answer to your question: I don't know! Wasn't around at the time when Adams was in his mid twenties!

It's a bit crude to generalise all players in the bottom half as 'bad players', but on the whole, they're obviously vastly inferior to the players at the best clubs. With a couple of exceptions - Valencia at Wigan for example.

I'll trust what I see though, and that is that Parker, Samba, Cahill, N'Zogbia etc. aren't good enough for Arsenal.

Well, someone like Koscielny is a better centre back than Gary Cahill, and he was much cheaper than Cahill would be.

I agree that Arsenal need to find a better balance within their team, in terms of experience and leadership qualities etc, but signing overpriced and overrated players for other English clubs isn't the answer IMO.

Completely disagree. Plenty of bottom half clubs have got players who are good enough for top 6 clubs. In addition to those that you rubbished I will also add: O'Hara, Enrique, R Johnson, Odemwingie, and various Villa players.

He may be overpriced but that doesn't mean they wouldn't do a job at a top club..

Loads of top players started at lower clubs anyway.

Out of those, only Enrique is good enough for a club like Arsenal IMO. And he's only been in England for a couple of years now, and he's young.

Point is that Parker, Samba etc. have been in England for ages now, and suddenly - despite West Ham and Blackburn both struggling in the league - they're being touted as 'ideal signings' for Arsenal.

fair enough that it's your opinion but you have also touted van der Weil for the top clubs, whereas those that watch him a lot know that he isn't the answer either.

The reason some of these players are still at lower clubs is probably because they are overpriced and managers prefer taking risks on cheaper foreign players.

pompeyfan - Fair enough. The van der Weil comment wasn't one with much thought, I haven't seen nearly enough of him to comment properly. All I know is that Chelsea could do with a right back who is competent going forward, and van der Weil was the best [and most realistic] signing I could immediately think of.

roger johnson is the classic heroic defender. he's the kind of guy who would be my favourite player if i was a birmingham fan as he puts his body on the line for the shirt every week.
HOWEVER there is a reason he has to do that, he's often mopping up from his own poor positioning or poor clearances etc. look at the amount of saves foster has made this season, there's a clue to my thoughts on roger johnson, heroic yes, competent no

I reckon Chelsea would be better off sticking with Boswinga if he ever stays fit.

I was worried someone might notice R Johnson in my list, for some reason I wanted to add a Birmingham player and I keep hearing 'he should get a call up' talk, I appreciate he isn't the best defender. Also i forgot about Barton & Tiote.

I just think they are comparable. Both pretty poor defensively but also great going forward. I haven't seen much of Boswingwa this season tho (who has!) so am basing it on what he used to be like!

I think Samba is very much a bruiser/blocker, someone who puts his body on the line. He's great in the air and agile but doesn't appear to have great positional awareness and his tackling accuracy sometimes lets him down.

i agree not a big scoring game, especially if the other results start coming their way, blackburn might only need a draw to secure it, so it will be a tight game

and dnt see a good blackburn differential since mgp performances dropped, samba and hoilett doubtful

      Tevez vs. Berba: My view:

      Berba:
      + Golden Boot
      + Home game
+ B’Pool will attack – may leak goals
+ May play up top on his own
+ Scored twice away at B’Pool
+ Normally scores well against lesser teams

      - Not GUARANTEED to start
      - Owen might play furthest forward, with Berba in behind him
      - Reserve Man U team – might not gel
      - B’pool fighting for their lives
      - No form to speak of

      Tevez:
      + Golden Boot
      + Will play if fit
      + Fresh (ish)
+ Could play up top on his own
+ Bolton been leaking goals recently (incl. 2 at home to Sunderland)
+ Looks in form (last 2 games)
      + On freekicks and penalties

      - Away from home (ManC don’t score that many away)
      - Bolton been VERY strong at home this season
      - Could play in front 2 with Dzeko/Balotelli (not as effective)

Still no idea who im going for!

That would be a huge kick in the Bulgarian gonads if they got a pen and he didn't take it. End of United career.

The one thing I don't agree with in the above post is about City's away form. From the outset Mancini has played very conservative, but I think a lot of people agree if they open up they would score more often. I think you'll see that from the start against Bolton.

            +1 regarding the City point.

City to be more attacking this week. Bolton's home form has been great, right up until the point where they had nothing to play for. 2 or 3 nil City for me.

It's a tough one, personally i think people would like Scholes sign off with a goal rather then Berba win the Golden boot. I think im going for Tevez, but go mad and get both, not sure how though...

if u have seen owen play as a sub lately...he is dropping into the mid and wings rather than playing upfront and what form are u talking about?if he don't start then how can u expect him to score and btw he has scored in his last 2 games at ot...

Thanks so much for that, you've saved me writing down exactly what i'm thinking!!

If its any help, i'm currently leaning towards Tevez, when Berba scores, he scores big, but it doesn't happen often. Tevez is more likely to be involved in any City goal even if he doesn't score it.

But then i'm defending a lead, so Tevez seems a safe bet to me, if I was chasing however i'd be all over Berba like a rash, and hoping this week is one of his biggies (every chance it could be)
