Having picked up 14 clean sheets in the previous campaign, Stoke’s defensive options were very much on Fantasy managers radars as pre-season squads were tentatively selected. With so much uncertainty over the goalkeeper situation, however, thoughts turned to the back four and it was Ryan Shawcross who was at the forefront of most people’s plans, given that the centre-half had also bagged 21 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points in 2009/10.

With Tony Pulis’ side reliant on set-play delivery and well-practiced routines, Stoke’s muscular back four were always going to generate supplementary points to compliment defensive returns. However, not only did Robert Huth overshadow his centre-back partner for Bonus Points, the German exceeded all expectations by coming to prominence as Stoke’s major goal threat from set-pieces and even played his part from direct free-kicks. Ryan Shawcross was a forgotten man with Huth quickly installing himself as the prime target for Fantasy managers.

Defensively, Stoke had a slow start to the season and with just one clean sheet in the first 12 gameweeks, were looking poor value for money. Robert Huth, however, had already weighed in with a couple of goals by that point, a hint of what was to come. In a season where clean sheets were down, on average, from the previous few campaigns, attack-minded defenders proved vital and Huth ended up with six league goals (scoring four at home and two away) – the joint-top goal haul for defenders.

The Statistics
Huth started the season priced at 5.0 and even dropped to 4.9 but a run of one goal and two clean sheets between gameweek 12-14 saw his stock rise accordingly. While Shawcross offered little returns, Huth continued to impress and a huge swing in ownership saw Huth finish the season in 19% of FPL teams, compared to Shawcross’ 8%.

Stoke’s clean sheets dropped considerably, picking up just the 8 this time round, with five at home and three on the road but Huth’s goals helped him to 138 pts, just pipping ex-Chelsea team mate John Terry as the sixth best defender in the entire game.

Gameweek 26 was the highlight of the season for Huth’s owners. The towering defender capitalised on Sunderland’s inability to cope with Stoke’s set-piece threat to earn two goals and an assist. Three Bonus Points duly followed as Huth returned an incredible 19 points.

The Prospects
If this season is anything to go by, defenders with attacking potential will remain very popular targets. Huth’s goal scoring antics will surely see a price hike for the German, and he will be expected to come in around the 5.5 mark when the new player list is published – a similar pricing to Fulham’s Brede Hangeland’s this season.

Whether Huth can replicate his goalscoring antics is another matter; prior to this season he’d only scored five league goals in his entire career. Much will depend on how Pulis shapes his side over the summer – a radical change of style looks unlikely which should mean that set-plays will continue to play a major part in Stoke’s prosperity – a factor that can only aid Huth’s Fantasy potential.

      ..............Jones...............

      ....Albrighton......Rodwell.......

      .............Cleverly.............

      ......Sturridge.....Welbeck.......

With Sturridge and welbeck both able to go out wide, Cleverly pushing through the middle. Basically all the midfield/attack are able to rotate, and there is pace throughout the team. Would be interesting to see where they would finish in the league

Just placed the following bets with paddy power for the Champs league final and just wanted to run it past somebody else if you'd be kind enough to have a look.

    0-0 draw 13/2 19stake return 142.50
    1-1 draw 5/1 24 stake return 144
    2-2 draw 14/1 9.50 stake return 142.50
    3-3 draw 75/1 1.90 stake rerturn 144.40
    1-0 man u 9/1 14.50 stake return 145
    2-0 man u 17/1 8 stake return 144
    3-0 man u 55/1 2.60 stake return 145.60
    2-1 man u 14/1 9.50 stake return 142.50
    3-1 man u 35/1 stake 4 return 144
    3-2 man u 50/1 stake 3 return 153
Man U to score 4 or more goals 50/1 stake 3 return 150

Total stake £99 but if Barca win then this will all be returned. If not then i've won atleast £42.50. Am i right in saying there is no way i can lose money on this?

Put that other bet on with a different bookie. Bookmakers don't become rich by letting punters make a range of no-lose bets. They're within their rights to void bets/accounts without warning and you could be out of pocket.

If you think United can score 5 or more then put a bet on those scores as well, would only cost about 29p per bet and consequently another couple of quid

It's just people being scared to part with their money. The T&Cs clearly state that all correct score bets will be refunded if Barcelona win in 90 minutes, as well as stating that they'll only refund up to £100 in bets.

So placing £100 worth of correct bets is perfectly within the rules.

I've done the same bet as Kingston and jamsiep. Apart from the terms stating maximum bets returned of a value £100, it should work fine. Only thing I can potentially see happening is Paddy Power cottoning if lots of people do it, or if you then put a large bet on Barcelona to win (to counter act the money back special) which may look too obvious as to the scheme. If they did flag it up the worse they would do is void all the bets and return the stakes though surely?

PS Here's a good bet offer I found via betclic.com - a free £30 bet for signing up. I've put it on a DRAW/BARCELONA HT/FT at 4/1 claiming a nice £150 if it comes in. If you lose the bet betclic return your stake and you are free to withdraw the funds, making it a no risk bet!

I did check the T&Cs and they say something like 'subject to the usual football rules', which are then VERY hard to find on the site. I expect this will all be fine, but bookies don't become rich by letting thousands of people exploit their offers. If losing £100 isn't a big deal to you then go for it, but I wouldn't see this as risk-free money.

They're not total idiots, they know that some people will take advantage of the bets so that they cannot lose - hence they put in place the £100 maximum refund.

They obviously think that the pros (publicity etc.) outweigh the cons (a few people getting their maths right to guarantee a 'free' bet).

I know they're not total idiots, that's what I'm saying. They can also run the promo (get their publicity) and void the punters who take the piss at the same time and get the best of both worlds. If you want to risk it, I don't really care, good luck- I'm just trying to put the other side of the argument in because it's being a bit one-sided to the 'easy money' side at the moment. As Soop said, if something's too good to be true, it probably isn't.

Taking the piss as in betting all outcomes. When you sign up to PP, in the very long document of T&Cs that no one reads it'll say something like we can cancel your bets and void your account if we want to. All I'm saying is that this is something that might (though might not) come under that. There's every chance you'll all make a few pounds and be happy.

I've seen this happen on forums before where people who don't really know what they're talking about have said something was a guaranteed return, and a lot of people who rushed in lost a good deal of money. No one will lose a fortune here, it's true, but all I'm reading at the moment is people getting excited about easy money.

It's alright, I get what you're saying and I still think it's worth a go. If they don't like what I'm doing, then you'd have thought they'd void all the bets, rather than letting the game play out, and then deciding not to refund the bets.

jamsiep: let me tell you something.
I have 214 pounds in my supercasino account that they do not allow me to withdraw. This is what happened.

they were giving away a £20 bonus for free. i played it on blackjack and roulette and got it up to 214 pounds.
to make the amount withdrawable i would have to wager atleast £495. i had already wagered about £260. then to double the wager i put half of 214 on red and other half on black on the roulette wheel (only way i can lose if a 0 comes up.)
and i did it one more time. Now i have wagered about £700 pounds and the 214 pounds are automatically sent to the Real Money account from the Bonus account.
When i try to withdraw it, it says transaction declined. when i ask why, they say

"Please note that you did not comply with our bonus policy by placing "low risk" bets. Low risk Roulette bets are bet spread combinations covering 25 and up (25-37 spots) of the 37 unique number spots on the table. For example, if You bet on Red and Black, You are covering 36 of the 37 possible outcomes and this type of bet would therefore not count towards the wagering criteria.

We have therefore declined your withdrawal request and returned the withdrawal amount to your account. You are kindly asked to wager an additional amount of £495.00 before requesting another withdrawal."

so basically i have to rewager £495. i have exams right now so the money is just lying there.

                moral - read all T&C's
P.S. your bets are "low-risk" too, this is why i reckon you should check again.

That's a little different. Most bookies have terms like that with their 'free bets' offers. Like with Bet365, you have to bet on things with odds > 1/2 to work your way towards the free bets.

Doubt this will be the case here though, and anyway, the bets I've made cover about a 49% probability, not 97% like your red/black bets.

PS Here's a good bet offer I found via betclic - a free £30 bet for signing up. I've put it on a DRAW/BARCELONA HT/FT at 4/1 claiming a nice £150 if it comes in. If you lose the bet betclic return your stake and you are free to withdraw the funds, making it a no risk bet!

I think so. It would be absolutely outrageous of them to suddenly decide to not refund the bets after the game.

That BetClic offer is pretty good too, and HT Draw/FT Barcelona is a good shout as well. May follow you with that!

        Indeed I agree.

I can also recommend a very low risk pound on both HT/FT for Barca/Man Utd & Man Utd/Barca The odds are 33/1 & 25/1 and consequently making an easy £30 odd quid incase a tense final gets played out. Think it was a opposite HT/FT for the 2006 final with Arsenal and Barcelona. Worth a stab for £2

No you deposit the betclic account with £30, then make a £30 bet with that. If you lose the bet you get the £30 stake returned back into the account which you can carry on betting with if you want, or alternatively withdraw it straight away thus making it a free chance at a bet.

It's on Paddy Power. Because of their Money Back Special offer, you can place bets on the correct score in the CL final, that - provided they don't refuse to refund the bets as Marknlard is worried about up the page - will ensure you can't lose any money.

They're refunding various markets (and will refund up to £100), including correct score bets, if Barcelona win in 90 minutes. So if you back all realistic scorelines, where Barcelona don't win, you either win a profit of around £44 - if Barcelona don't win, or you get all you money refunded - if Barcelona do win.

I've covered the 4 goals or more bet just incase. To be fair the most you can make out of it is about £40 something quid and for the time some people might think it's not worth it.
I think it's worth a go. Also, because i'm a new pp customer i got a free bet.

very true. I'm just describing a standard win-by-numbers scenario for United. It's actually a backhanded compliment to Utd, I don't think there's any club with more determination and never-say-die attitude. The number of games they've come from behind to draw/win is ridiculous.

Assuming it's not foreseen as a revenue stream via advertising/mentions (in which case it's such a farce that I don't know why anyone would bother following it), where's the upside?

Getting some additional abuse? Possibly getting fined/benched/losing endorsement opportunities due to some damn fool Tweet?

It's amazing. Play on the PS3 myself. Never even bothered with the single-player, but the online is fantastic. Two modes: Rush and Conquest. Conquest is capture-the-flag, and Rush is offense vs. defense (one team tries to blow up a series of objectives, while the other tries to stop them).

Do know that, if you get it, you may have to shell out for additional maps. After a battle, if your squadmates move on to a map that you don't have, you get booted. So if you're playing with friends who have all the maps, you'll want to make sure you do, too.

Great game, though. Really encourages cooperation, and the class system is my favorite (even if there are too many people who misplay the recon class, thinking they're supposed to just act as snipers).

Ah that kind of sucks about the maps. At least if you don't have them on MW2, it doesn't kick you if playing with friends, just keeps you on the old maps.

I have no idea, but speaking of XBOX, i just played someone online at fifa. He was Utd, i was City. He went 1-0 up, i made it 3-1. He pulled two back to make it 3-3 because Rooney is incapable of missing on that game. Extra time. I make it 4-3. Towards the start of the second half of extra time he scores to maker it 4-4. 118minutes, Bang! DZEEEEKO! 5-4 to me. Whistle blows, screen freezes, 'connection with your opponent has been lost'

I just sent him an abusive, RBJ style message. Immature? Yes, bothered? No.

The only thing i would do different would be to make sure you put to 45 quid of whatever the profit is on Barca to win(or whatever bet you want) on in a different bookmakers. Its too late for me but for others, please place the bet in a different bookmakers. PP just have to look at my account and argue i have made a no loss bet and could void the bet but i they see you have only done the correct score outcomes to a stake of £100, there's nothing they can do about it!

Wouldn't surprise me the slightest if he did.

You know what, six months ago I had no idea how big a joke Tomas Brolin is in England. He's still a hero here, forever remembered for being the star player in our World Cup 1994 team. Did I tell you we finished third?

He was a class player Garg, but he turned into a joke. Much like Gazza. Less so i guess because Brolin just got really fat rather than alcoholic.

Not sure how it was an 'accident' ... pro athletes know full well they will be tested and for what.

His 'diet pills' excuse is still suspect - utilizing potentially banned substances in order to gain an advantage (even if it's "just" losing weight).

I don't dislike Toure, but he was caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Consider him lucky to have the ban served during the summer months.

I'm also aware of how 'accidental' and 'harsh' the situation would seem to the ABU brigade if it were a United player.

Amazing the whole affair gets so much less attention and outrage than, say, Giggs' affair.

I guess testing positive for a performance enhancing drug is fine. Just don't miss the bloody test!

Maybe one need to have seen a few of these to spot it's fake - I don't know - but I guarantee you with my life this one is fake. The real ball is erased on a computer and replaced by a fake ball. Don't you see how it blurs and then gains speed halfway through?

I'd stake my life, your life and Gargamel's life on that being fake. The ball seems to miraculously hover (as well as spinning completely unnaturally) at the same height for 50 metres, despite being barely struck in the first place.

He undercuts the ball, yet in each case (after about the first 10 metres of travel) the ball rotates about a vertical axis. FAKE!

    Hey!
Would really love some feedback on this:

I thought of going to Wembley on Saturday, and try to get a ticket for the final, hopefully cheaper than 1000 pounds, as those who still have tickets will want to get rid of them.
Does that sound like a good idea? Any tips as to how to make sure I don't get ripped off (fake tickets)? Is it illegal to buy a ticket like that? Any other relevant advice?

Hi. Only thing I can say is I know one who bought tickets for 500 and already sold them for 2000, so I think you'll struggle to get a ticket for less than 1000 pounds. Think prices will be more than 4000 for good seats on the final day.

Thanks for replies. I guess I was assuming/hoping that there might be a few people who've tried to get max £ for their tickets, and when it's 19:30 on Saturday, they'll start accepting three-digit offers just to get anything for them.

But judging from your answers that's not very plausible?

There is massive risk attached to this though, you will miss the game if you don't get in as there are no live screenings of the game within a mile of Wembley.

I know. My plan is to leave at 19:30 if I'm unsuccessful, jump on my bike, which I figure is the fastest way of getting a mile away from Wembley at that time, and just desperately bike Mark Cavendish-style to the closest pub.

Can't you even take the position of a 'true neutral' and hope for a quality game?

Sure, odds are against United ... but rooting so zealously for a foreign team of flailers and simulators (the sin being magnified due to their actual tekkers) just seems *ugly* and small.

How 'bout this: you hope for Barca to lose (*not* United to win) and I won't think you soft or less of a Chels supporter.

                    No deal. 😉

I can think of absolutely no reasons why I'd want United to win. Sure, there are a few reasons why I'd want Barcelona to lose, but they are unquestionably the lesser of two evils.

                    You're English, no?
                    United are the underdogs, no?

Two good reasons there, I'd submit.

I guess I'm not as hardcore as you, as I'd root for Chels vs. Barca (as I was for Arse) in that scenario - and I'm a Yank.

I can think of one- we'd only be one trophy behind drawing level with Liverpool in Europe, and we all know how much you love them.... 😉

Yeah, in all fairness I would never root for Chelsea unless they had to win in order to win us the league......

I'll give you the underdogs point, but not the English one. I'm not the slightest bit patriotic, and even if I was, I doubt the fact that United are 'English' would do anything for me. They're hardly representing England, what with their foreign owners and three English players.

I spend virtually all year actively hoping that United do badly in their matches, why should that change because they're playing a team from another country.

A lot of it comes down to me not wanting United fans to be happy. It's okay Barcelona fans being delirious all the way over in Spain, but having ecstatic United fans in your face all day every day isn't my cup of tea. It's pretty much my worst nightmare.

To be honest, I think I'm being entirely reasonable here. A large percentage of Chelsea fans will be cheering on Barcelona, and I can't understand whatsoever the ones who want United to win.

Well, I understand a lot of that - even though throwing stones at foreign owners and players seems a bit ... ironic.

United are an English team in terms of history, league, Brit manager, etc.

Good enough, stay in the closet. 😛

And by my count it's 9 English, 1 Welsh, 1 Scot, and 2 Irish in their squad of 25.

If it makes you feel any better King Eric I marginally hope United win, even though I would win €40 if they lose.
Mainly because United are Northern English, partly because I admire Ferguson and some of their players (Giggs, Scholes, Valencia, Vidic, and VDS, I'm also beginning to like Hernandez so long as he doesn't turn into a diver) and largely because Barcelona have really gone down in my estimation this season. Alves, Busquets and Pedro in particular are utter villains.
Saying that though I dislike Nani and Rooney equally as much.
