Steve Bruce may very well have £20 million from the sale of Jordan Henderson burning a hole in his pocket right now but the Sunderland manager has proven himself a canny operator with the acquisition of Seb Larsson from Birmingham on a free transfer from July 1. Added to the money from Darren Bent’s January move to Aston Villa, it’s clear that Bruce has quite a transfer warchest to dip into, but the Larsson move represents a risk-free investment in many respects; the player has plenty Premier League experience and, having turned out for Bruce when the Black Cats boss was in charge at St Andrews, both men know exactly what to expect.

Larsson was very much a man in demand; Newcastle had talks in January but couldn’t agree personal terms and with the sale of Ashley Young to Manchester United, Alex McLeish was keen to bring the player to Villa Park, but Bruce’s powers of persuasion helped seal the deal for Sunderland, with the player admitting:

“I had other alternatives but it’s great to sign with a club like Sunderland. Steve Bruce showed he wanted me and that’s important. Sunderland are building for the future.”

The Statistics

Larsson came to the Premier League aged just 16; Arsenal snapped the Swede up from home town team IFK Eskilstuna but he made only 3 appearances for the Gunners and was a fixture in the Arsenal reserves when Bruce -then at Birmingham- picked him up on a season-long loan in 2006/07with an option for the Blues to buy. Larsson made 27 appearances, scoring just the 1 goal, but impressed enough for Birmingham to make the deal a permanent one, for the sum of £1 million.

A couple of seasons in the Championship and the Premier League followed, with Larsson making a further 157 league appearances, scoring 18 goals and making 22 assists for the club. Last season was his most impressive to date- in all competitions, Larsson played 50 times, scored 6 goals and grabbed 14 assists but his contribution was, nonetheless, not quite enough to save the club from relegation on the final day of the season.

With 4 goals and 6 assists for Birmingham, Larsson had a hand in more of Birmingham’s 37 goals than any other Blues player and his 1.8 Key Passes made the Swede the side’s chief creator by some distance. His 116 pt Fantasy Premier League (FPL) haul was third best for Birmingham, behind the overworked Ben Foster in goal and centre-half Roger Johnson, with Larsson picking up 9 Bonus Points along the way.

The Prospects

The right midfield area was a problem one for Sunderland last term; six different players filled the position over the course of the season but with no real stand-out success; Larsson will be hoping to provide the Black Cats with a solution and will be given plenty chance to shine under Bruce, having turned down bigger wage offers to sign up on Wearside.

Larsson’s dead-ball ability will prove crucial to Sunderland next term; with regular set-piece taker Henderson now at Anfield, he seems nailed-on to be first in line for both corners and free-kicks. Last season saw Henderson and Asamoah Gyan tie for most assist with a mere 5 apiece and Bruce will be desperate to add some creativity to the side, particularly in light of the former’s exit.

With the afore-mentioned budget enabling Bruce to target more high-profile signings over the next couple of months, Sunderland should have a bit more menace and solidity about them than in previous campaigns and as their likely chief creator, Larsson -with a starting price of 5.0 in FPL looking realistic- may well prove to be a bargain Fantasy option come 2011/12, as the Black Cats look to build on last season’s disappointing tenth-place finish.

F1: Mark Webber to lead the first lap, Webber to win, Alonso to win, and for a bit of an outside bet, Massa to win.

Larsson is a bit of a nearly man in ff terms imo. Not quite prolific enough to yield consistent points returns and I'm not sure going to SUN will make much difference tbh. Good price though if 5 mill.

Who's on pens at Sun? Gyan? Seb will defo be on set pieces, so if Sun do better than last year, which they should IMO I think he could be an excellent low budget midfielder. Must have a look and see who Sun rotate well with...

Aye, I'd imagine it will be Gyan. Seb could be a good option if Sunderland can get the right players in and they gel well. Their form was pretty horrific towards the end of last season though if I remember correctly...

      U21 fantasy:

I'm thinking of doing Herrera->Xhaka to be able to afford Sommer->De Gea which will give me a chance of 5 Spanish cleanies since I already have their entire backline. Will have to hope for Herrera to remain silent though and it could all go t!ts up if the Swiss score.Should I take the gamble?

Cheers for the link Boom, I could not see my final position either. I finished a not too impressive (but not too shabby either) joint 49th in our league so happy enough. The remarkable thing about the competition is that I only had one assist from my 9 captains picks!!! I really suck at picking captains it seems and it looks like my fpl form from last year is continuing 🙁

Do it! The score's gonna be 1-0. In fact I'm so confident in that that I think I'll slap €20 on it. The only way it's gonna be 2-0 is if there's some ridiculous free kick scored or something... hmmm.

Would love Adam at Rovers. He'd be the main man too so would probably still be an attractive fantasy prospect. As for Downing, i think he's more likely to leave than to stay but hopefully that will throw up some more cheap alternatives at the Villa like Albi last season.

I thought that Larsson's crosses combined with Zigic's heading abilities would have been an ideal combo.

That was a costly mistake for me. 🙁

You'd have thought so but i don't believe Zigic is all that great in the air. Sure he'll win a fair share of headers due to his stature but in terms of actually heading technique he's far from the best. Plus it's just his general attacking instincts that let him down, not being in the right positions to get chances or attract good crosses.

Sorry, this is a basic question, but on the Mambers' season ticker, when you see Arsenal's "Home rating", is that how dofficult it is to play them when YOU'RE at home, or how difficult to play them when THEY'RE at home?

            Cheers,

The more I look at the fixtures and imagine the prices, the more I'm tempted by a midfield with a "budget pack" of four midfielders. Something like this:

Sinclair Taraabt Lampard Ben Arfa Albrighton

You can get three goodish fixtures out of those four budget options for the first 8 weeks or the season or so, and I think that they're all good picks in themselves. The problem is that this jepordises my normal strategy of "being able to buy any player in week 2." If you have four budget midfielders in your opening squad, you're pretty inflexible when it comes to which midfielders you can bring in. Hmmmmmmm.

Too true, Sunderland did pretty decently last year especially when you consider the unfortunate incident of Bent mid-season.

The signings they've made along with the amount they have in the bank should give Sunderland fans with a certain optimism.

Yeah I know. I just wish the analysts would be honest and say, 'You know what? that wasn't a great race was it?'. Don't get me wrong, Vettel is kicking ass this year, he's doing great. It's just so bloody boring to watch, like Schumacher back in his Ferrari days.

Haha! It's just so frustrating sometimes. In F1 and football, the other teams spend as much, but they just can't catch up to the winning team.

Yes. Truly terrible race. Worst of the season so far imo. Despite redbulls dominating, the previous races have been some of the most thrilling in years. Did you see Canada?

Hell yes. I was leaping around the room at the end of that race. I didn't even watch the last 20 laps today. Vettel will surely win the championship before the last couple of races. He can even afford to score no points and not be passed until August 28th!

It does look that way but you never know. Hopefully banning blown diffusers will shake things up a bit at the next race.

Just like variable engine mapping (or whatever it is) did this time?

What I don't understand is just because a team is excellent and tries something legal that no-one else has thought of, they then try to ban it. That encourages innovation, doesn't it! F1 is a joke these days 🙁

I know what you mean Stevvi, but this has happened throughout F1 history. One team comes up with an excellent innovation that puts them a second or so ahead of everyone else, then everyone tries to have it banned. It will always happen.

Any chance that Manchester United's new keeper could slip under the radar at 6.0 million rather than 6.5? Or is that just ludicrously wishful thinking?

Tough one. Last year Hart was put at 6.0 when he wasn't nessecarily first choice keeper for a team that had finished fifth the previous year. De Gea will be first choice keeper for the champions.

                Suggests 6.5 to me.

The best value players are the ones who aren't necessarily considered first choice when FPL opens.

Recently, FPL have also been pricing new signings as first choice players, just as so not to risk under-pricing them (probably because they priced Bosingwa at 6.0 a few years ago, who then nailed down a starting place and got loads of attacking points).

It will be near-essential to start with the best Chelsea player in your team, for a captaincy choice for weeks 2 and 3. Anyone's guess who that will be though. Any marquee new signings may well be tempting.

He seems rather unfashionable at the moment, but Torres with a rest and full pre-season under his belt could return to being the world class forward he once was.

exacty, if chelsea start funnelling everything through him like liverpool did (dependant on him regaining sharpness of course) then in theory he should be at least as prolific as those days.

Pre-season should give a better indication of the first team. But until then it's too uncertain to even consider.

Sunderland at the start of last season were defensively not bad and Gyan wasn't too bad. I would say they're too poor from a fpl point of view, worth keeping an eye on atleast.
