Having captured Seb Larsson on a free transfer from Birmingham, Sunderland flexed their financial muscles by announcing the signing of Ipswich starlet Connor Wickham for a fee that could rise to £12 million.

The 18-year-old arrives at the Stadium of Light on a five-year deal, fresh from a season with the Tractor Boys that was scattered with eye-catching goals and performances. The 6ft 3in striker claimed the Football League’s Young Player of the Year award for his displays, adding momentum to a bandwagon of hype and attention which culminated in the Black Cats swoop on Wednesday.

Sunderland had to break the transfer record for a football league player to see off the attentions of Liverpool and numerous other suitors; this for a player who will surely need to be eased into his career in the top flight.

While Steve Bruce will be mindful of managing the impact of his new young prospect, Wickham himself remained typically focused on his arrival on Wearside….

“I’m confident in myself and my ability…I know what I can do and am capable of…I’ve never felt pressured or intimidated by matters off the pitch but I’m relieved to have everything done. Now I’m looking forward to getting back into training, getting back into football and meeting the lads. I know what I can do. I’ll work hard, do the best I can and get my head down.”

The Statistics

Wickham has been fast-tracked to the Premier League. He made his debut for Ipswich at the age of just 16 years and 11 days in April 2009, breaking the club record. He went on to make 10 league starts that season, with 19 appearances from the bench. Six goals and an assist arrived in that campaign and his displays were enough to immediately put Premier League clubs on alert.

Last season Wickham made further strides – nine goals in 37 league appearances represented significant progress. All those goals arrived in 2011 with Wickham used as an impact sub to that point. From the New Year however, having served Roy Keane form the bench, Wickham was promoted to the starting XI by new boss Paul Jewell.

While Jewell’s decision to hand Wickham regular starts had results on the pitch, it also got the club Scouts furiously circling Portman Road. The club moved swiftly to sign their star asset on a new contract in April but, realistically, this served mainly as a means of assuring a minimum bid rather than securing the player’s future at the club.

The Prospects

Sunderland’s investment certainly looks sound in the long-term – Wickham is a centre forward with huge potential. A physical specimen with all the attributes to lead the line, he possesses an assured first touch for a big man and has guile and trickery in his armoury. Wickham’s finishing has also caught the eye; for one so young, Wickham can display an assured touch in front of goal and can strike the ball with either foot. It’s a package will have Sunderland fans purring in anticipation; the question is, will they get to see Wickham produce results next season?

Steve Bruce played a major part in attracting Wickham to the club according to yesterday’s claims from the player himself. The Sunderland boss now has the task of reining in his new young talent, whilst serving the supporters inevitable hunger to see Wickham unleashed. The opportunity for a first team breakthrough will surely have proved motivation for Wickham and Bruce certainly suggested that the 18-year-old could make an immediate impact at the club…

“He’s still very young, but at 6ft 3in, he’s a physical presence. With his height and style of play, he will offer us a threat in front of goal and complement our existing strikers. We have been watching him for a while now and he is improving and developing all the time. He’s a great prospect and I’m sure our supporters will love watching him play.”

Fantasy Managers will need to monitor the pre-season and assess how Bruce is likely to use his new asset. With the experience and pedigree of Asamoah Gyan still at the club, the Sunderland boss may afford himself time to blood Wickham gradually rather than throw him against Premier League defences.

With another signing up front perhaps on the cards, there’s a suggestion that Wickham could get loaned out by Sunderland. A regular bench role seems more likely and that will obviously hinder the striker’s potential as a Fantasy prospect. If however, Wickham can successfully make the step up and bring his presence and talent to bear, we may see him emerge as a potential bargain during Sunderland’s favourable fixture window in November. It may be too much to ask for Wickham to earn starts and produce the goods any earlier.

Dazzle - I guess I was being a little harsh, maybe see how he can cut it in the championship first 🙂

I know Wilson is only 19 but whenever I've seen him he's been crap. Got absolutely raped by the Braga winger the night we went out of the EL too. But he's only young.

Cole, Jova, N'Gog, Konch, Poulson, El Zhar (yeah, he's still with us) and Degan all need to go, never rated Daniel Ayala either and it looks like Maxi wants to go home - not a big loss imo, a squad player at best for the upcoming season.

Wilson has looked assured and composed at CB everytime I've seen him. I think he only gets put at LB as he's left footed. I think he'l be a great centre half.

yeah, I said that he looks better at CB on the last page, but I've not seen him there many times.

I think it would of been good for him if we had loaned him back to Rangers last season, he was a first teamer there, right?

Yeah he got the game time at Rangers, I think you's should have. We needed the defensive cover for Davie Weir. If we dont get Cuellar then theres alot of paper talk up here about Wilson coming back up. I've seen him play in in the CL and at international level and not look out of place. great distribution from the defence.

ha ha, not quite what i was thinking but i think his previous performances (all be it over a year ago) mean that he deserves a chance to prove himself somewhere before getting the boot.
I think it was a lot to ask of Wilson tbh but we were about 6 defenders down that week weren't we?? 😉

completely agree with your list above. Maxi and Mereiles both looked good for a short period after Kenny arrived but for the first half of the season they were both poor. I'd rather have Downing than Maxi but still don't understand all the interet in Adam. I'd add Insua and Aurelio to the list as long as we get a DECENT left back. Johnson has proven that he can cover the postiion if needed.

Unless we get Enrique i would rather keep Clichy. I think the criticism has been over the top. He wasn't great last season but he still led the league for interceptions. I've given up blaming the defence, our midfield is clearly the problem, it doesn't offer enough protection, we always get hit on the counter attack or set pieces.

Set-pieces are a massive issue. Szscensy has improved the situation slightly, but there's still a bit organisation issue.

Clichy's positioning is near-awful.He'll always be the one to drop a little deeper than the rest of the line and play someone onside.

We haven't been hit on the break as much this season, as Walcott and Wilshere track back better than Diaby and Arshavin.

True, but for some reason, Song has decided to push further forward. The tactics were shocking at times last season.

What do you think about Gervinho, happy? Looks like Cesc is leaving. I just hope it's resolved soon!

Song pushing forward was hit-and-miss. It worked very well in some games, and didn't in others.

It seemed to work better in the bigger games (Song was excellent in both games vs. Man City last season, and at home to Chelsea) but it's not so needed vs. the smaller teams, or when we're defending a narrow lead.

Gervinho's fine. Looks like a good signing. more of those need to follow though.

I'm very surprised we're settling for such a low price with Cesc. I think it's worth continuing to play hard-ball with Barca, as he's still got 4 years left on his contract.

Im just sick of the Fabregas stories. Part of me wouldn't mind if he left, i wouldn't mind a change. Nasri playing in the centre, he has more goals in him then Cesc. But Cesc is the better passer. Not sure who i want us to sign!

I agree with Tosey 100%. I'm not a computer person and any crap link would do it's damage before I knew what was happening. FPL or nowt. Hard for the good links we all want though. Could Fpl links come up in one colour and anything else as a different one?

i run a game for people on this site during the season, therefore linking the site is the easiest way of doing it. if i didn't i would have to keep posting the link on here and i'm guessing that would annoy people more, aka in your face spamming as opposed to subtle and necessary spamming

Perhaps a way around that is to allow members to have signatures (a short message/link included at the base of all your posts).

          However, it's not as elegant.

        Fletcher
        McGregor
        Bale

Anyone do anything useful with the 2010/11 stats that are on the FPL site? They get taken down after a while don’t they… does that happen sometime between now and the start of the season? Seem to remember the FPL stats for 2009/10 being there at the start last year… just with blanks for the promoted players.

I’ve got a copy of them in Excel so I’ve got a record of minutes played, bonus, assists, goals, points etc.

All I've really done so far is work out how many assists/points/clean sheets a player would have got if they played every minute of every game and scored at the same rate… see if I can find a player who scored well in half a season’s minutes who I think might get more minutes this year (broadly similar to points per game). Anyone else do anything else with them or got any plans?

I’ve not really looked at the figures in great detail but if certain players had played the full 3420 minutes and scored at the same rate then total scores for a few forwards for the season would have been:

      Fletcher – Wolves – 238 (actually scored 97 from 1395 minutes)
      Gyan – Sunderland – 198 (116 from 2006 minutes)
      Zamora – Fulham – 285 (63 from 757 minutes)

With starts you’d have to think those players have a (decent) chance of getting to 150 points in 2011/12.

Best way to learn a league's players, the fantasy game.

Being American, the Copa is much more relevant for the majority of games my national side will play ... and I'd just love to spout off stats for the Uruguayan second-choice RB while I'm in the stands.

the drafting system would only work if you have the player pool available at any time during the season. Also, the funds should technically be unlimited so I can not see it working in the usual fpl surroundings

Not even flirted with the idea. Before prices come out, pre-season games give a hint as to starters, and more transfers are completed -- it all seems a bit pointless.

Sometimes you can be too-cute by half, y'know? In my experience, over-thinking is a major FPL crime.

Mostly just trying to get a view of the fixtures and when best to use my WC.

In fairness, it's a decent question to ask and I'm not looking to be negative ... just seems a banner, although annoying to some extent, would be less annoying than that question being asked - and answered - another 500 times.

My thoughts on the GK debate:

Option A is to buy an expensive goalkeeper, a cheap goalkeeper, and a a budget defender. For example, Cech, Carson and Roger Johnson. The 3 of these cost 15.5 million between them.

Option B is to buy 2 rotatable budget keepers, and an expensive defender. For example, Foster, Al Habsi and Ivanovic. These 3 cost 15.5 million together.

With option A, assuming you played the dear goalkeeper every week, you would have got 158 points from your keepers. With option B (the option I used for most of this season) you could've gotten 153 points*, the total amount for my keepers this season (also the same as Foster's total).

Then, Ivanovic outscored Carr by 144 to 90, 54 points.

      Option A = 248 points.
      Option B = 297 points.

      * - Hanhemann and Jaaskelainean's score were included in this score as they were the keepers who I plyaed that week.

      Hope this helped.

Interesting analysis but I think you need to include an extra defender. In option A you wouldn't play the cheap defender (Johnson / Carr every week). You'd rotate him with another cheap defender and hopefully get more points over the season than simply playing Carr every week.

        Using your examples

        Option A points:
Cech + rotation of Carr and "defender X" (Carson never played)

        Option B points:
Rotation of Hanheman and Jussi and Ivanovic ("defender X" never played)

It's crude as you wouldn't have a defender in option B that never played but you can't ignore the fact that Carr wouldn't play every match for the option A team.

Yeah I see your point, I think though that's the cost that comes with a dear gk and a cheap one, you have to play the dear keeper every week making the second spot a waste of space. Also, I think Carr would be rotated as much as any other defender in Option B, so it would probably even out.

Yeah. I think the only reason I'd pick an expensive GK was if I really wanted someone from a certain team (e.g. city) and couldn't be sure of a starts/60 mins from any of the defenders.

So using last year's teams... say Birmingham and Stoke rotate well all year.

          Option A
Cech + Wolves keeper who never plays
Carr and Shawcross who you rotate

          Option B
          Foster and Begovic rotate
Ivanovic plays every week (we wish) and Wolves defender always on bench

I got my cheapie rotators wrong last season, and never quite got round to changing them using my normal transfers. So I reckon I'll go with an expensive one to start and then trade down when it's clearer who is best.

Those numbers are close enough together to suggest that the tactics are functionally equivalent - more depends on an individual's choices week-in, week-out. As it should be, I guess. Adds diversity in team composition.

It usually takes a few GWs to work out who the good cheapie keepers will be, especially with no Birmingham in the league. I've seen people talking about Wigan and Wolves, don't remember to many cleanies from them last season.

on paper option B seems to definitely be the way to go. i guess it also depends on unearthing a prolific cheap defender then it can go both ways. but yeah when rob green can always comfortably pass the 100 point mark in the west ham defence then the cheap keeper way in theory is the way to go
