The Digest – a new regular. The concept is simple – capture the Gameweek past under three headings, assessing the player, the team and the one event that has the Fantasy Football community stirring.

Gameweek One provided an easy introduction, although sadly, around the genius of one Argentinian and the artistry of a sparkling Monday night display, some of its events are best forgotton.

The Player

Sergio Aguero
Late to the party, Sergio Aguero transformed the Gameweek in thirty minutes by dismantling Swansea with two goals and a smart assist for David Silva’s third goal. Busy and bustling, Aguero’s impressive industry was surpassed by moments of brilliance, capped by a 20-yard drive that dipped and curled away from the grasp of Vorm – a keeper who had, for so long, repelled City’s best efforts.

Any doubts that Aguero would take time adjusting to Premier League life were extinguished – concerns that Mancini’s men would need more matches to gel with their new talisman quelled. The link up play with Silva, in particular, looks to have the potential to dismantle defences and Aguero clearly has the end product to convert the creative spark supplied by the Spaniard.

Fantasy Managers will have revised their plans of the back of the half-hour cameo. Suddenly Aguero is no longer a “wait and see” prospect – he’s firmly in our plans with heavy investment heading his way.

The Team

Man City
City’s slow ascent from a teasing tormentor to ultimate destroyers of Swansea’s plucky Premier League baptism sent a clear message to their title rivals. The firepower available to Roberto Mancini is clearly devastating, reinforced considerably by Aguero’s explosive introduction on the hour-mark.

Around the Argentinian, last season’s campaigners stepped up accordingly. David Silva conjured and cajoled in midfield, linking play, seeking the ball, dazzling the visitors forlorn attempts to shackle his influence. Yaya Toure was immense – by pushing his presence further up the pitch, Mancini turned the game, imprisoned Swansea in their own half and was able to sustain the pressure to such a degree, breaking point was inevitable. Even Edin Dzeko, rejuvenated by a pre-season and clean slate, toiled as the lone striker before providing the focal point for Aguero to buzz around with such effect. A 75-minute appearance for Adam Johnson, the usual smattering of step-overs this time accompanied by an end product as he provided the ammunition for Dzeko’s crucial opener.

Behind all finery, Vincent Kompany marshalled a defence which started the campaign with a clean sheet – the first of many for a defence which topped the rankings last term.

We shouldn’t be seduced too easily – Swansea’s resistance seemed to drain once Dzeko breached their defence; clearly Brendan Rodgers has a lot of work to do before his outfit can compete with such an effective foe. However, it’s apparent that City’s attacking talent bristles with Fantasy potential and with defensive resolve also on offer, the temptation to boost the City quota in our lineups is strong.

The Talking Point

Fantasy Premier League Woes
Much as we’d like to dwell on some sparkling on-field displays, the Fantasy Gameweek was dominated by the problems suffered by the Fantasy Premier League game. Demand on Friday evening created issues which ultimately saw the service disrupted with managers unable to log on to tweak their lineups and new managers denied the opportunity to sign-up. Despite toiling overnight and a brief window of normality from 5am onwards, big demand again on Saturday morning again threatened the service and Friday night’s issues returned.

Live points were disabled while the service looked to recover and it wasn’t until Sunday that the FPL began to edge back to near working order.

Yesterday came the apology for the issues – the FPL have taken the step to lift the cost on transfers leading up to this weekend’s deadline and emphasised the option or mini-league admins to scrap Gameweek One’s tallies. New monthly prizes were introduced; an extra incentive for Gameweek’s 2-4 thrown into the mix. Inevitably, the solution left some feeling aggrieved and there’s still concerns that the message has yet to reach those who play the game. There’s still confusion.

In truth, the FPL manager just wants stability. We want the game to get back on its feet, to make a recovery and to reinvigorate our Fantasy seasons. We’ve got everything crossed for Gameweek Two. We hope to be talking football in next week’s digest.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Liking the look and flexibility of my forward line. Currently with Bent, Rooney & Torres.

All 3 can easily be swapped without needing money, for say: Suarez, RVP & Aguero when the latter 3's fixtures are better.

Granted my midfield is abit weakened, but it's not too much of a worry.

However i don't know whether to just save a transfer, and get Suarez in from the start instead of Bent. I'd expect Bent to score more than Suarez this week, but Liverpool's fixtures are better after the Arsenal game.

I have him, because he's a BP magnet, and is one of the most attacking full backs in the league, he's basically a winger who gets 4 for a clean sheet, stupid not to have him. Plus free kicks and pens as soon as Arteta is injured again.

Drogba seemingly wasn't the best choice after all. Because of Aguero's low ownership can everybody see his price rising rapidly over the next 2 GW's?

I want to put him in for drogs but I'm not willing to waste 4 points by making 2 subs in a week, so I'll have to wait until GW3.

            Those gw4 fixtures:

Silva, Rooney, Torres, Suarez & Baines are fixtureproof.

Your keepers play Spurs or Everton, that's a tough choice.

You can play Senderos at home to Blackburn, Bosingwa away at Sunderland, Simpson away at QPR or de Laet at home to WBA.

But you can't play all your defenders and all your forwards, so you probably want to bench Simpson away at attack-minded QPR.

That then means you have play Silva + 2. And your choices are N'Zogbia away at Everton (bad), Dyer away at Arsenal (worse), Moses away at City (even worse) or Walters at home to Liverpool (good luck!).

            There go your two transfers!

And if you have any injuries, rotation, substitutions... You're still screwed.

The problem is you'd have to play Baines, Silva & your forwards every single week. There's no flexibility, and no slack to cope with circumstances and the unexpected.

Downgrade Torres. One start does not guarantee another, and I'm not keen on any of Dyer, Moses or Walters.

This free gameweek has had one very negative effect , that is going to be a hinderance to good players.

It has stopped the money making bandwagon that many of us rely on . Normally there are lots of money trains to jump and off at this time of the season . The free gameweek has stopped them all dead.

By next week everyone will have Aguera so his price wont rise as steeply as it would of done. My usual goal of 110m by xmas looks in jeapody

The only saver, Triggs, is that there is still a lot of players to choose from. No one is really sure either on player reliability e.g. Zoggers or rotation e.g. Nani.

Apart from Suarez and Aguero the Kun, everything is still up in the air.

The big challenge now if everyone has Baines plus three expensive fwds is who will be in that low budget midfield?

Trying to decide between nzogbia and malouda. Malouda was ineffective against stoke and seemed a little sluggish compared to last season. N'Zogbia is battling to regain peak fitness after going on international duty last week and having a limited pre season.

Both got 3 points last week, both played about 70 mins and both have favourable home fixtures respectively WBA and BLA at home.

Price does not matter as a direct factor, I am looking at value.

Personally malouda seems not as key to the plans of the new manager, a certain man with a red card ban is looking most likely to start out on the left upon return.

N'Zogbia I would assume would be key to villa's attacks, I did not manage to watch their game on the weekend so not really sure how he went but I am sure he will get better with time.

Jafa - with everyone fighting to get on the Kun Fu Panda and Suarez wagons, what's your take on Chelsea attacking cover?

Seems all the talk on Malouda is negative this week. Last year I had a feeling about Kalou, ignored it and regretted it.

        😥

Who to fit in? No Roonpig? Drogba?

Malouda just didn't have a good game, I kinda gave him some negative thought a few posts back. Hopefully malouda finds his A game, stoke were pretty tight at the back

The Guardian chalkboard I saw yesterday revealed that Malouda is being played out wider. However, too early to make decisions after one hard game.

The only player worth considering from CHS is Torres in my mind. Somehow, we have to take advantage of these CHS fix which means that Roonpig will get overlooked.

Looks like Drog is playing no 2 to Torres.

By the way everyone, as an Arsenal fan I feel I have to warn you that Senderos is a defensive liability. Many is the time I have watched with horror the sheepish fear in his eyes.

I mean, the guy was let go to make space for the likes of Koscielny, Djourou and... Squillaci!

He was only good when he arrived in comparison to Pascal Cygan who was even worse.

I still live in fear Everton won't do that well against QPR. Everton seem to be in a bad state at the moment, and QPR played better than the 4-0 scoreline suggested.

That being said, I'm considering putting Saha in and swapping for Odemwingie for GW3.

Are we sure Saha will play?

Quite funny, I've just done it. Thinking he wont get many bonus points so I've only got him for clean sheets. If I rotate defenders better I now have Cole and Enrique who should get their fair share of clean sheets anyway.

the more I think about it and the more I tinker with my team, the more I realize that Aguero might be all the City coverage anyone really needs. yes, Silva and Yaya are solid choices. But if Aguero continues with top performances (no reason he wouldn't) then it becomes easier swap out Silva/Yaya for other players as imo, Aguero will outscore and out-price rise both of them.
