As we all likely know by now, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) have granted unlimited transfers to reassess and fix our Fantasy outfits ahead of Gameweek two.

Given such freedom to pick and choose new teams as we please, Fantasy managers should be ready and willing to select a captain who will come out of the traps kicking and screaming.

David Silva topped affairs last week and fortunately did voters proud – the problem was that the Man City playmaker was one of only a small handful of players to score points in this low-scoring Gameweek. Here’s a few we think might top affairs come Saturday morning deadline…

Fernando Torres

There was something a little different about Fernando Torres’ display last Sunday. Despite failing to score in the nil-nil draw with Stoke, there was a Joie de vivre about El Nino’s game- he looked hungry and livelier than ever before in a Chelsea shirt and hinted at a return to the form of old.

A home tie against West Brom -a game in which Chelsea scored six goals last season- offer the perfect platform for Torres to spread his wings and fly. Fingers crossed it doesn’t prove a false dawn.

Similar Alternatives: Frank Lampard, Florent Malouda

Wayne Rooney

Rooney is already off the mark this season. Netting at West Brom from open play, Man United’s star forward carried forward his sparkling pre-season displays as the champions opened their account with a win.

A home game against Tottenham isn’t going to be the top fixture on paper to attract investment, but United are deadly at home- they dropped just two points at Old Tarafford all last season. Throw in his spot-kick duties in addition to his overall good form and we envisage there will be a fair few handing him the armband for the final fixture of the gameweek.

Similar Alternatives: Ashley Young, Luis Nani

Darren Bent

The Aston Villa hitman is one of those strikers you buy for a season and not just for Christmas – he’ll have lean weeks but, as the years have shown, will get you the points on a regular enough basis.

A home match with Blackburn Rovers tied into a belief that we think his chances of picking up bonus points could see an increase under the new EA Sports PPI Index, suggests Bent is looking a good proposition for Gameweek 2.

Similar Alternative: Charles N’Zogbia

Leighton Baines

Everton were the other side unable to take part in Gameweek 1. Fortunately, unlike Spurs, they won’t be facing the reigning champions- instead they play host to a QPR side still licking their wounds from a 4-0 battering at Loftus Road last weekend.

Despite a 8.0 price tag hanging round the neck of Leighton Baines, last season’s top-scoring FPL defender has shown he’s clearly capable of producing the same points returns as the majority of midfielders; 5 goals and 11 assists in 2010/11 attests to that.

His forays up and down the left-flank will prove vital for the Toffees and up against a recovering Kieron Dyer (or Bradley Orr), Baines will favour his chances. He’s also a dab hand at set-pieces.

Similar Alternatives: Louis Saha, Tim Cahill

Alternative Alternatives

Grant Holt – A kind first home fixture for a penalty-taking captain of this newly-promoted side.

Scott Sinclair – Remove the club captaincy and we’ve got a rinse and repeat case of the above.

Steven Fletcher – The Wolves striker has been all about goals when given time on the pitch. He now seems more secure and will be hosting Fulham.

The poll is now hot off the presses and awaiting your votes, as you can see we think the strikers are going to rule supreme this week – but who are we to know? The evidence of your accumulated clicking fingers will tell us in a couple days time exactly where favour lies.

I think I'm very close to deciphering the PPI score for midfielders. I've tried the formula on the following players (with my score shown in brackets).

    Hoolahan 12 (11)
    Fox 11 (6)
    Crofts 6 (5)
    Bennett 3 (3)
    Watson 19 (18)
    Moses 0 (0)
    Song 9 (9)
    Walcott 8 (8)
    Ramsey 2 (3)
    Yaya Toure 30 (28)
    Silva 30 (30)
    A Young 17 (17)
    Nani 7 (7)
    Muamba 33 (31)

Yep, even Moses scores 0! The one glaring anomaly is Fox, but I can't for the life of me see anything in the Opta stats to boost his score and not other players.

      The key metrics are:

      Goal = 10 points
      Assist = 5 points
      Total tackles + Tackles won
Attempt on target = 4 points
Attempt off target = -4 points
Team Win Bonus = 16 points

There's others but they're the main ones. Successful dribbles don't appear to be rewarded at all 🙁

I didn't know these exact scoring methods.

It's ridiculously skewed to winning teams isn't it.

Brunt isn't coming out right, so still a little tweaking required. It may be that "attempts off target" is a little lower, but players are most certainly punished for shots off target, which is a bit of a lottery in terms of picking players.

You're better off with a Walcott that does a toe poke on target than someone who tries for the top corner.

I know! I can't see any metric rewarding passing. There could be a bonus points based on a high ratio of successful passes to total passes, but nothing based on just total passes. It's quite bizarre.

Ramsey had 61 passes, one of the highest of GW1, yet scored only 2 points...

cheers...really handy. Wondered why Steven Taylor got bps...looks like it was the array of tackles that won it.

Essentially Andy Carroll was on a hiding to nothing with his six shots off target...even if he'd have scored.

Agreed, the system is flawed...like everything fantasy football related this season.

Bench warmer mate. Apparently we've got a bid in for Erik Pieters of PSV for left-back, and that's the position Ferguson plays. Quite why he's down as a midfielder I don't know. One thing's for sure, he's not going to get in the middle ahead of Tiote - Cabaye - Jonas - Barton - Gosling - Ben Arfa - Marveaux - Obertan.

dont have baines was thinking of picking him up but not sure if i would pick him as captain to risky for me. if he doesnt score or get a assist he may be getting a solid 4 points out of him. but flip side is out of all the defenders in the premier league he has the most potential to score and provide assists in my opinon so you may cash in

Captaining strikers is also a gamble too. Lost count how many times I've backed a top striker playing an easy home game, only to end up with 4 points. Andy Carrol last weekend for example.

I never owned Baines last year, and it cost me big time. He's got some making up to do!

Baines as captain may be risky given (1) first game of the season, (2) QPR need to respond to last week's thrashing, and (3) Arteta is back, and may take over set-pieces.

That being said, I REALLY want Baines as well... but have acknowledged that he will be at an opportunity cost of others who have at least a 1 week data point reference of form (Silva, A Young, Adam, Rooney, etc)

was thinking at....but would prefer cole to bos...and thinking downgrading bos won't save much

Larsson is in there temp....would prefer taarbaart when QPR get running (if they every do)

Vonn is always at home/away the same time as given is home/away so don't rotate well at all
