This afternoon has seen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) update the stats after reviewing a couple of incidents from last weekend’s games.

Under this season’s new assist ruling (below), Wayne Rooney has another assist to his name, given for his role in this Ashley Young goal (1min03sec).

It’s a decision that’s likely to cause plenty consternation across the Fantasy world and is arguably as contentious as any Bonus Points decision that’s gone by. Under the letter of the law, though, it seems it must be applied. The Bonus Points for the match will stand, though, with Ashley Young still having a greater EA Sports PPI.

Elsewhere, Martin Petrov was awarded an assist for his role in Bolton’s late consolation at Anfield.

Crossing Potential
Certainly it seems that players supplying crosses may well be in line for increased assists. Perhaps it’s only speculation but, given that this rule change has thrown up an early example of an assist awarded which wouldn’t be given last season, we should perhaps expect more examples and an increase in assists from crossed balls.

It seems that even if a cross is unsuccessful, then, it could still be turned into a potential assist if the defending side’s clearance falls at the feet of the right opposition player, a la Ashley Young. The likes of Leighton Baines and Stewart Downing –given their number of crosses- are suddenly a little more appealing.

Assists
Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal.

In the event of a penalty or free-kick, the player earning the penalty or free-kick gets an assist if a goal is directly scored, but not if he takes it himself, in which case no assist is given.

All assists are reviewed before the points are updated at the end of each day.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Hey Dom, i've sold him for Van Persie, as i didn't want to incur the 0.1 loss on him and RVP fell 0.1 so i got him in after.

Now i wish i'd waited as RVP could fall even cheaper. However i'm not worried about him getting an injury, so i would've done it anyway

Thanks Demi. I was thinking of doing the same but need to downgrade somewhere. Sessegnon>Petrov gives me the million I need but dont like Boltons fixtures. The only other two options I have are downgrading Sinclair or Baines.

Cheers Don. I think in your situation, i'd keep Sessegnon. He has this 1 Chelsea fixture, but then a run of great fixtures which should hopefully give good returns.

Baines has two potentially rewarding fixtures, but then a horrendous run of games. I'd be less inclined to downgrade Sinclair, because you already have Moses and Ferguson as cheap midfielders, and it would look too weak across the middle, if Sinclair was swapped for a cheaper player. Scott has decent fixtures too, so i'd keep.

The fact Baines is not on penalties though, swinga it for me, and for that price, i think it's too much for potential assists, because i don't think Everton will keep 2 clean sheets in the next two. So i'd downgrade Baines to a Liverpool or United defender (Smalling/Enrique) who i'd bet on outscoring Baines in the next two. This would free up the funds for the desired Torres > RVP transfer

Really good advice mate. I'm currently playing 4-3-3 assuming Baines as an 8m def, so 3-4-3 in essence. Is it worth gambling with this for another 3 GWs as originally planned or should I just downgrade to Smalling and Upgrade N'Zog to, say, Mata? I'm worried by how deep N'Zog is palying. Sticking out the Sess, with Ramsey coming off the bench and Silva.

Don't understand how you can all complain, it's hardly a farce. It's explained clearly in the rules you all agreed to when signing up to the site. As someone who had Rooney, I'd be more annoyed if they didn't award it as they'd be going against the rules they had laid out.

I think thats a bit of a joke... and even though I had Young, I never thought he would get the assists for the free kicks and I think it's rather stupid the rules work like that.

Why is the BBC news going on and on about athletics today and in particular the women's heptathlon? Fair enough they can't afford the rights to any important sports but that doesn't mean they have to clutter up the sports news with this nonsense. (I appreciate it means a lot to those involved. Unless they're all on drugs.)

Its sad that Channel 4 are actually showing the athletics and not BBC.

At this rate, the only sport on the BBC in the future will be the Olympics, British Grand Prix & Wimbledon.

Why have they added the penalty box rule, anyway? The next big storm is going to be a defender's deflection on the 18 yard line, was it in or was it out? Seems a needlessly specific addition to the rule.

The rule about 'last team member to touch the ball' is a silly one.. probably designed to appeal to the less hardcore FPL players, but a rule is a rule I guess. Agree totally that the penalty area element is daft aswell, asking for trouble at some point in the not-too-distant future.

Good point Marknlard. It's the same thing if there's a triple deflection (or something) on a pass on halfway, and the receiving player runs on and scores - an assist in the box, but not outside

Does anyone remember that twitter tw@ from the Guardian, Ian Prior that tweeted MAJOR AND I MEAN MAJOR TRANSFER EXCLUSIVE COMING IN 5 HOURS near the end of the last transfer window?

And it turned out he said Inter Milan were interested in signing BALE (but in the summer, not in that window) and it was a done deal?

If I had Rooney I'd never get rid, but as I don't have him I'm tempted to go with RVP instead for his plum run of fixtures, then switch to Rooney further down the line. I know his price is set to continue rising but once people realise he won't be smashing it every week it'll slow down. Hopefully by then RVP will have started firing aswell!

Ok ok... this comment wasnt meant to be taken literally lads. I apologise & didn't mean to cause so much confusion. I was more alluding to the fact that three of these four look pretty essential & there are some big-ish calls to be made about which 3 to go with... or do you mix it up & go for Tevez/Odemwingie chasing the differentials... or maybe something even more leftfield.

Just trying to see if this is the general consenseus & see what opinions & views the enlightened genius that is the FFS hive-mind holds.

As for the big 4, I have no idea. Go to FPL towers, hold the technician at gunpoint and force him to add an extra striker slot and give you £20 mil extra to spend. Whatever.

the guys could have all stopped and re-enacted the third act of hamlet with the traore playing the part of yorick using the ball as his skull and as long as he stayed inside the area through out the act before tossing the ball out to young then the assist would stand.

20 points lost for choosing torres over rooney. seriously wtf! on paper that's far more 50-50 then 20 points! 20 points! that's what you get for choosing leroy lita away to barcelona instead of messi home to swansea, not torres home to norwich over rooney home to arsenal. depressing thing if i was a chelsea fan is torres didn't even have any chances to miss.

AB, I noted with interested (and frustration) that the two highlights featuring El Numpty were him first getting booked, and second hacking at another player which nearly got his second yellow. According to MotD, he did nothing else of note.

I will never pick him again, ever. Not in a mil'yon years. 🙂

ha yeah. chelsea have escaped way too scot free from this for my liking. they've been one deflection and one obscene piece of athleticism from ramires away from 3 draws. yes winning from a poor display should be called the sign of a good team but i've seen about 30mins of fluid football in 270mins so far.

AP, without a crustal ball or tea leaves you can say that about any trade. It's clearly a judgement call on which I will be right or wrong, but I can live with either as long as I feel I made the sensible call.

Steven Taylor has got similar 9 point hauls as well, not sure it means too much. Cahill isn't fully fit so he's going to get less assists and he's going to score less goals as well, still good but much more value elsewhere in defence.

its a wildcard week and we need to maximise on profits. There is no way I can fit Silva, Nasri, Dzeko, Rooney, Suarez, Young etc all into my team (to get the price rises) and still have an 8 mil defender who is not rising at all

This isn't a RMT, just a little advice on whether or not to use my WC. I've already used up my free transfer on Nani > Young and although I feel the core of my squad is OK, Saha is proving a liability (although has good fixtures and may be Ok after the break), Sess/Sinclair and their teams aren't scoring, Moses has bad fixtures. Also Silva will likely pick up less points now Nasri is about and Warnock > Enrique is also a possiblity. In my shoes would you stick witht his for a while or use the WC now?

    Given Vorm
    Bosingwa Kompany Simpson Brown Warnock
    Sinclair Moses Silva Young Sess
    Saha Rooney Suarez

P.S. pretty much all my team appear to be away for GW4

Saha to Dzeko and downgrade Sinclair to Dyer? Or downgrade Sess?

Here is a potential scenario - John Terry hoofs a clearance for a corner upfield and the ball bounces out for a throw in. Throw in taken by the opposition and play a couple of passes before, under pressure from Mikel and Lamps, they have to pass it back to the RB who plays it round the back and the CB lays it off for the goalie. The clearance is poor though and Mata runs onto the ball he jinks past a player before a deflected shot somehow is scrambled on the line and goes in.

John Terry gets the assist.... result!

I honestly cannot follow where that is going. By the sounds of it if the opposition player is taking a thro in Terry hasn't touched the ball in the resulting attack. I would assume Mata gets the goal and there is no assist awarded?

He won't though - The ball's been touched by the opposition players outside the box.

I'm not a Rooney owner (sadly...) but it seems clear to me that, by the rules, it's an assist. Players have had dodgy assists since the game began - It's a new rule but does provide some clarity.
