Stoke City last night completed a deal to bring Tottenham and England striker Peter Crouch to the Britannia in an “at the death” move that smashed the club’s transfer record. Crouch signed a four-year contract with the Potters paying £10 million for his services.

Often acknowledged as Harry Redknapp’s “plan B”, the Spurs boss could not offer Crouch reassurance of a starting role following the recent acquisiton of Emmanuel Adebayor on loan from Man City. As a result, Redknapp somewhat begrudgingly allowed Crouch to leave White Hart Lane.

Tottenham’s loss is Stoke’s gain and Tony Pulis will welcome a player who seems tailor-made for his outfit – a target man who will lend his height to their set-piece orientated tactics, whilst offering enough quality on the deck to foster the talents of Stoke’s wide men. Crouch was Stoke’s number one transfer target and Pulis is in doubt on what he brings to his side…

“Peter has an excellent goalscoring record at the highest level. His goals-per-games ratio for England is remarkable and he scored seven goals in 10 Champions League games for Tottenham last season which gives you an idea of his pedigree.”

Crouch joins former Spurs team-mate Wilson Palacios at the club, the Honduran midfielder also completed his move to Potteries this evening, signing a four-year deal. A third signing, Birmingham’s Cameron Jerome was also finalised before the deadline as Pulis reinforced his squad ahead of a taxing Europa League campaign.

The Stats

With a career spanning a wide array of clubs, Peter Crouch got his first break at QPR in 2000, bagging 10 goals in his first full season before moving to Portsmouth where his career and output flourished further. Eighteen goals in 24 starts for the Championship club saw Crouch earn interest from Aston Villa and his passage back to the Premier League was sealed with a £5 million move to the Midlands in 2002.

In two seasons at Villa, Crouch made just 37 appearances, scoring 6 goals, before moving on loan to Norwich and eventually on to Southampton in a permanent deal. Once again, having gained an assured starting role, Crouch showed his worth – 12 goals in 27 games in his debut season wasn’t enough to save the Saints from relegation but tempted Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez to shell out £7million to bring him to Anfield in 2005. A tumultuous three season spell on Merseyside saw Crouch fetch 19 goals in 85 league appearances as, once again, Crouch suffered from patchy form and irregular starts.

Having signed him at Southampton, Harry Redknapp then came calling for a second time as Crouch moved back to Portsmouth in 2008 for two seasons, fetching 19 goals in 76 league games. Redknapp, having moved to Spurs, then returned for Crouch again, taking him to White Hart Lane where he notched another 12 goals in 57 appearances.

The Prospects

Crouch is surely set to benefit from Stoke’s long established style of play. Along with Kenwyne Jones, he will be a prime target for the service provided by Jermaine Pennant and Matt Etherington from out wide, while Rory Delap will also be looking to exploit his height from his sling-shot throw-ins.

Crouch commands a relatively hefty Fantasy Premier League price-tag (6.9) which is unlikely to encourage investment. In addition, with fellow new signing Jerome joining the ranks, and with Europa League trips to the Ukraine, Turkey and Israel on the cards, it’s clear that rotation in the attacking positions will take place. Recent “Out of Position” candidate Jon Walters, looked good value to this point but, with increased options up front, Walters’ starting role is now under threat and, across the board, the lineup in the Stoke attack now looks uncertain.

As Pulis’ top transfer target, Crouch would seem the most likely to sustain a run of starts and Fantasy managers will be keen observers on his progress as he settles in his new surroundings.

Just to clarify, is this your opinion? 😉

Meireles seems to be splitting opinion. A lot of people saying that he's the best signing of the window, and a lot of people don't understand the transfer.

I'm on the fence. He's undoubtedly the sort of dynamic player we need to freshen up our midfield, but - despite some good moments - he's never totally convinced me.

Need I say what I want to happen?! 😛

AvB wants our midfield to press like mad, to go with our high defensive line, so it wouldn't be totally logical to drop easily our most energetic midfield. Rather the fat lump who genuinely does nothing these days, other than standing around pointing.

Exactly, that's why I think it's an odd transfer. If anyone should be replaced it would be Lampard, but Terry would just go running to Roman and get AVB the sack if the tried it. Ramires is the only guy he could conceivably replace, and Meireles isn't really an improvement. They could split the matches though.

Maybe people are getting sick of seeing me continually erring on the side of caution re: wildcards, but I see it as my contribution to the discussion of this on the site to stress that users don't have to get caught up in the bandwagons.

But there is also an emotion-based reason why I'm not keen on playing it at this time.

A wildcard is partly a chance to distinguish your team from everyone else around you. If you wildcard, for instance, after January then you can look at your team and think, "wow, no-one's team that I look at is as good as mine", because all your rivals and everyone on here will be struggling to cope with injuries and get rid of the dodgy double gameweek buys that are plaguing their teams. It's satisfying to look at your team and think it's better than almost anyone else that you see.

There are two reasons why playing it now fails to provide this satisfaction:

        a) The sheer number of people who are wildcarding (exacerbated on a forum like this, but still the case.) Everyone else will have been able to pick players from scratch this week as well.

        b) The fact that, with so little this season premier league data to go on (some teams have barely even scored yet!) wildcarders will inevitably cluster around the same sets of players. Not only will many others around you have wildcarded, but they will also have probably picked the same players that you do.

Therefore, most people who are wildcard in this window won't have the satisfaction of looking around and thinking that their team is the best around. No idea if any of that gives you any statistical or logical advantage, its the reason I won't be wildcarding even though I;ve had a pretty poor start.

Fair comment Jonah. But as a brief reply, look at last year's start. Someone without chelsea in week 1 who didn't wildcard and kneejerk malouda drogba etc would have been 'sensible' poss, and 6 gw's in would be miles behind... you can't say if any obv standout teams and players will continue to perform or not but it could be the right decision.

Re having a different team, if certain big players continually perform you will want to have them and not be left behind. Last year i left it to my cheapies to be my main differentials (Carroll and Adam at 5 mil, those were the days!...)

Aguero could become a better goalscorer however the positioning I saw was Silva, Nasri, Aguero trying to get the ball up front to Dzeko. If it was the other way around i.e. Aguero leading the attack and being the target man I think he'd definitely be the higher scorer.

As a City fan, I can see both Dzeko and Tevez rotating with Augero. Its logical. Both Argentines already have an understanding and Augero plays up front and off Dzeko, rather than Tevez playing CM looking for the ball and refurse to pass to Dzeko.

Dzeko is currently being snapped up due to price increase because of the number of WCs being played.

I think Dzeko will get less points than Aguero, but I think, as I said before, that Ashley Young will get WAY more points than N'Zogbia, in which the 2.5m you save having Dzeko instead of Aguero goes into affording Young over N'Zogbia.

Well for Wolfsburg out of 111 apps he scored 66 goals. Aguero scored 74 goals from 175 apps for Atletico. Both are proven goalscorers. The difference is the adjustment time. Dzeko has really begun to get used to playing in the EPL and is reaping the rewards. Aguero is still new to the EPL but is obviously already showing his promise. Rotation wise its difficult to call, I think Tevez and Balotelli are out of favour so Dzeko and Aguero will be the preferred choices. Dzeko is clearly in excellent form so I can't really see Mancini not capitalising on that! At the end of the day he wants to do as well as he can. I have Dzeko at the moment and am actually toying with the possibility of getting both for a short while. Just wait and see what the internationals bring, one (or both) could end up injured.

Now thats what i call a good answer! I was wondering who would come off worse after the internationals think Dzeko may end up needing more rest and will get benched ahead of Aguero but like you say if a players scoring the manager will leave him in if hes fit maybe i should go Rooney Dzeko Aguero and forget Suarez? Or is that overkill?

Thank you 🙂 I agree with mArvin though, both could need rests. What I'd do right now is if you have Dzeko, keep him for the price rises. Then wait and see how the internationals go, injuries, how active both players have been. Personally I think Aguero could be rested, a lot of travelling and match play. Dzeko, I'm just going to wait and see what happens. Their scoring potetnial is also going to depend on Silva and Nasri. So it's really quite up in the air right now!

Dzeko is being jumped on because his form says he shouldn't be dropped for a while. His price alleviates funds that we are using in midfield to grab another top liner there. That extra 2.5m is the difference needed between a Charles N'Zogbia and an Ashley Young or a Stephane Sessegnon and a Charlie Adam.

I'm not touching QPR. SWPs class but I don't think the team will gel. Taraabt and Barton will be brawling with eachother before the gw even kicks off

Pretty flimsy reason for not wanting any QPR players. Their fixtures are pretty damn good over the next few weeks.

I don't think fixtures count for a whole lot when looking at QPR. They'll get a few sneaky wins this season buy I see them in the bottom 2 come the end of it.
Also the entire team is a rotation risk bar Taraabt who is overrated in the premier league.
If he's guaranteed the only player I like there is SWP.

+1oo couldn't agree more. QPR have yet to settle and while taarabt was a big player in the championship he's not convincing me of his merit in the premiership yet. Don't know if he will at all.

Genuinely, a very tough call. RVP could be dynamite given the fixtures, but Dzeko also has lovely fixtures, plus City are scoring goals for fun so far this season.

I could ramble on, but basically, I really want all three of Dzeko, RVP and Baines in my team so I don't know who to tell you to leave out. Can you not get rid of Arteta and use the money to get RVP along with A?

    Current line-up:

Suarez (acquired at 9.5), Dzeko (8.5) and Rooney (12.0)

Would you try fit RvP into that? And how?

I have Saurez, RVP, Rooney. Sticking with it for a few weeks, will play the card though if Le Goons continue to be crap and get Dzeko in to upgrade the midfield. RVP has to have goals in him soon starting with Swansea. When you think about it if he'd scored that pen it could have been a different game, and he still got one from open play and a bonus on top of the Champions league goal earlier in the week...

IMO Dzeko will be benched next match with Tevez starting.

I think people need to be looking to something that they never looked for before: Arsenal defence.

With the easy fixtures coming up, and also top-class defenders signed, I think picking Szczezny or even Merty or Santos could be a good buy, for both clean sheets and in the case of Santos, scoring opportunities.

    Anyone else feel the same?

Not me, I'm afraid. Don't like Gooners at the mo, a lot players shipped in and will need time to gel, if they do at all.

RvP will always be worth watching, and I think Benayoun could be a decent punt near-term (if he plays obviously) for next few fixtures, but GK and Def I'm steering well clear of, for time being at least.

PS, Mertesacker is just a neg OOP Crouchie in disguise!

I think Downing losses some attraction if 'Pool go Carroll-less like last GW. In fairness, they probably put in their best performance so far this season, which perhaps says something about Suarez to feet over hoofing to Big Andy.

So I'd say Adam for form if you desperately want 'Pool Mid.
