Fantasy managers will be reeling from this morning’s news that Leighton Baines has withdrawn from the England squad with a hamstring injury picked up in training.

The FA have released a statement on the matter, saying only:

“Leighton Baines has returned to Everton, having sustained an injury in training on Sunday. Baines has been ruled out of England’s Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales on Tuesday evening, and is now with his club for further treatment. No replacement has been called into the squad.”

Last season’s top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender must be considered a major doubt for Everton’s weekend fixture at home to Aston Villa, then. With another Goodison showdown the following week against Wigan, his 236K Fantasy owners would have been anticipating some decent returns, particularly with the left-back on set-pieces and penalties in light of Mikel Arteta’s departure to Arsenal.

It’s a tricky one- Baines’ price (8.0) takes up a large chunk of our early-season budgets and there’s certainly no point in having him benched if he proves to be unavailable for those upcoming fixtures. Until the club assess the player and make any official statement, though, it’s a case of β€œwait and see” right now for his Fantasy owners- the potential is clearly there for Baines is Gameweeks 4 and 5 and to bail out now before any confirmation by David Moyes would be folly.

The two most over used words in football journalism? Blow and Boost.

I fecking hate reading through the "blow and Boost" section of the sports stages. They don't even bother pretending they have any idea about professional writing, and the Editor obviously doesn't discourage them.

    Ferguson - why?

Everyone who has him for the 'cheap bench fodder' - do you realise you give yourself no options. You have to make 2 transfers to get him to something useful (for when you feel inclined to do that). He adds no value to your team since he'll never play so unreliable as a sub and can only really fall in value.

I have Dyer in my team, and his lack of transferability is a major headache. His saving grace is that he could pick up 2/3 points when I need to use him with a little bit of assist/BP upside.

Completely disagree. with the exception of the snow cancellations, if you have a decent team you'll almost never have to call upon the 3rd sub. Waste of .5 mill IMO

You still won't be able to afford 7 attackers you'd want to play every week. Rotating cheap forwards/mids is just as important as doing the same for your defence.

But thanks for contributing, you've really added to the debate.

Also - good luck with Sinclair away at Arsenal this GW, or GW6 when you have Jarvis and Sinclair away at Liverpool and Chelsea.

As soon as VDV is fit I'll have Downing Mata NZogbia VDV Dzeko Adebayor Rooney attacking. Even if 2 become injured I can play all 5 defenders: Senderos Woodgate Berra Simpson Brown. So my third sub: Ferguson, will probs never be played all season in my team.

    Given (Vorm)
    Bosingwa Brown Kompany Simpson (Warnock)
    Sess Young Silva (Sinclair Moses)
    Rooney Suarez Saha

This is my team for GW3, really wish I'd used my WC now as I'm hating it more and more. Already used my freebie on Nani > Young, anything you'd recommend taking a hit for? I know Saha is an obvious one to take out but now Beckford has gone I'm praying Saha will be fitter after this break and start, plus he has nice fixtures

Ok first comment on here as decided to finally register after reading the comments for the past couple of weeks and cracking up…

    My team is

    Hilario (Given)
    Simpson, Bosingwa, Baines (Ward, Lopez)
    Mikel,Cleverley,Gutierrez,Silva (Ferguson)
    Aguero,Rooney,Suarez

Only one transfer made -2 million in the bank – 215 points. 1 trf available for GW4

Just two questions about one player.. not going to go into Baines yet…or why the hell I’ve got Mikel..(who will go… its just a question of when I can do it and not lose points)

    q) Will Aguero take the pens and do you think he will be rotated once CL starts?

Thanks and keep the jokes coming

also any ideas on Aguero CL rotation... don't want to replace him with Dseko as everyone has him.. and my luck will be Aguero scores a hatrick if I do

Ok, wait on Baines. Mikel has easy game at home.

Pink has very high opta stats and the chalkboards indicate a very advance position so I would take that in consideration.

My view is that it'll be Tevez and Aguero rotating around Dzeko until Dzeko loses form and then the two Argies will take control

I'd imagine that, just with all of City's attackers, Aguero will be subject rotation around the CL ties, just because they have so many options in those areas. Virtually impossible to know who will take the City penalties, I can't remember anyone other than Tevez taking them in recent times, so we can't know what Mancini's order of preference is, especially when the likes of Aguero and Nasri have only just signed.

Have you already made your one free transfer for this week? If not, just get rid of Mikel now!

I'm banking on Fulham to come right with Schwarzer in goal.

Aston Villa are the obvious choice outside the top 4. Hutton could be a better prospect than Hughes.

United once Vidic returns will be a rock at the back.

Swansea may return some home clean sheets above expectations (against bottom half clubs).

Wolves are another one to consider, RJ is a massive boost to them and I think their midfield keeps the ball enough to ensure they're not always under pressure.

I don't see another Birmingham though.

Villa has to be the obvious choice. McLeish+Given+Dunne and Collins who are very typical no nonsense center backs means that they'll rack up the clean sheets.

Beyond that, I'd agree with the wolves pick. Also tempted by West Brom. They kept only 2 clean sheets last year, but a large part of that was under Di Matteo. Even over the course of last year, they got a lot tighter under Hodgson and conceded less. They don't pop up as an immediate option since they haven't kept a clean sheet this season, but to be fair, they've played Chelsea and Man Utd in their opening fixtures. That being said, all their starting defenders are 4.5, and you can get a Wes Brown/Woodgate for that price. Tough call.

      Outside of top 6:-

Stoke looking good. Woodgate played every Prem game so far so potential snip at £4.5m if he stays injury free (big if admittedly).

Aston Villa are a safe bet also with McLeish in charge.

Also think Swansea could be solid at home as they keep possession well although some tough fixtures coming up.

Blackburn good on paper with Robinson, Samba and Dann but I wouldn't touch them until their form picks up.

Wouldn't touch fulham though. More attack focused under Jol, and now that Senderos isn't a guaranteed starter, the cheapest link in that defense is 5.0. Much better value out there for that price.

Should I dump Bosingwa to strengthen my back line????????????????????????

I have Bos and 4 X 4.0m players. When Bos goes up 0.1 I'm thinking of
    Bos > Brown.

    Briggs > Johnson.

3 gameweeks in, only had Nani for Man Utd cover during the "8-2 be a gooner joke gameweek" and languishing on 134 points overall and near the bottom of my league. However, its only to 80 point gap to the top. I wildcarded to this team: Rate it please!

    Krul/Vorm
    R Taylor/Bosingwa/Kompany/Jose Enrique
    Brunt Young Nasri Hunt Ferguson
    Adebayor/Van Persie Suarez

    My questions
    1) Is Adebayor too risky? Should I get Yakubu from Blackburn instead of upgade Hunt-> Jarvis / Nasri --> Silva Ferguson --> Barton?
    2) Do you think not having Rooney and just Young is wise?
    3) What other ways do you think I can make up the differential?

    Thanks guys!

Personally I think Rooney is all you need for MAN U cover. On both set pieces and pens which pretty much speaks for itself after the Arsenal game...3 goals, 2 set pieces and 1 pen.

I think Adebayor is a good choice, if I were wildcarding I'd make sure I had him...with VDV out he could prove a good punt!

My suggestion is to change Young>Walcott and maybe Ryan Taylor as well as is a bit risky rotation wise...

Thanks for suggestions man: Second attempt -

        Vorm/Krul
        Brown/Jose Enrique/Bosingwa/De Laet/Ward
Walcot/Adam/nasri/Brunt/Ferguson ( I can upgrade Nasri to silva - but I thought maybe differential)
        Ade/Rooney/Suarez

I am actually pretty happy with this team apart from no chelsea attack cover.. Adam out, Mata in?

Making a second attempt at this to help you out, because I'm in the same boat re: Nani and have a similar amount of points.

Not happy with Vorm/Krul to be honest - Krul won't be keeping many more clean sheets and neither will Vorm. Get Given/Begovic/Schwarzer to rotate with Vorm.

I'd take Ollson over Brown to rotate better with Ward.

You need to take some punts, and I see you're doing it with Ade (guessing you missed the Dzeko prices rises), otherwise I'd get Bale in. Adam may be injured and could lose some value if Gerrard steals his freekicks.

See my thoughts on Ferguson above.

Overall I like it, you could do Adam/Walcott -> Mata/Arteta, to get Chelsea cover.

Guys pretty much decided on my team, trouble is I’m £0.5m short!

Any ideas on how to save it?
    Given, (Vorm)
Jose Enrique, Bosingwa, Simpson / Brown, (De Laet)
    Silva, Young, Walcott, Petrov, (Dyer)
    Rooney, Dzeko, Suarez

Is Theo worth the extra million on Arteta? Probably, although Aretat price should rocket.

I’m thinking maybe Krul instead of Given, Ferguson for Dyer or Brown for another £4.0m defender
    Any other thoughts?

Walcott -> Arteta is probably your best bet to get in under budget.

Other options would be to get in Bale or Adebayor at 8.0m each they'll free up some cash.

Hutton's transfer has given a real alternative, and Stoke aren't very fashionable, so hard to put any of their players in your team.

i have both and would rather lose nzog on the performances so far, but barton may take some of taarbts fks, so its only slightly nzog for me.

do you not think there could be some points for N'Zogbia with NEW/QPR/WIG coming up? It's just bound to happen as soon as I transfer him out he'll rack them up.

    Current WC team:

    Given, Vorm
    Kompany, Bosingwa, Woodgate, Simpson, NTaylor
    Young, Nasri, Jarvis, Petrov, Barkley
    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko

    A few questions:

    1. Is my midfield strong enough?
    2. Is Dzeko a rotation risk with Tevez still around, plus CL matches? Should I get Adebayor in?
    3. Is Rooney enough Man Utd cover? If so, should I swap Young for someone like Mata/Arteta?

Ferguson - rubbish, adds no value to your team. Don't like Anderson either. I think Roon and RVP is killing the rest of your team, I'd get suarez and arteta instead of anderson and RVP

Would you consider it a bad idea to have Given and a Villa defender in the same team. I would not normally do it but villa do look good for it. Maybe going for Hutton. What do you think?

Too risky for me, I would only consider doubling up on MC, Chel, maybe MU. But on the whole, you probably shouldn't do it, too much risk.

Doubling up on Villa defence is perfectly fine.

Just as it was last year with Birmingham - some weeks you'll get 4 points others 12. Overall you'll get more than if you get a worse keeper and defender just because you don't like volatility.

On the basis that Adam seems to be injured, and we have no idea if Sturridge will start, isn't it fairly obvious?

Baines was my big differential next 2 gws. I hope it's one of those minor tweaks and he'll be fine for weekend as my midfield could def do with some of that £8m invested in it
