Carlos Tevez denies he refused to play for Man City last night, while Sir Alex Ferguson pans his back-four after shipping three goals at home to Basel. Andre Villas-Boas assures Frank Lampard he has a big part to play for Chelsea as Alex Song looks set to fill in at centre half for Arsenal this evening. Tim Cahill and Darren Bent give their respective managers a fitness boost by declaring themselves fit ahead of the weekend. Here’s some morning Scribbles, folks:

Carlos Tevez has already denied Roberto Mancini’s claims that he refused to play for Man City last night. The while situation, according to the Argentine, was nothing more than an apparent misunderstanding.

There was some confusion on the bench and I believe my position may have been misunderstood. Going forward I am ready to play when required and to fulfil my obligations.

Despite both Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra playing in the back-four last night, a dire defensive performance from Man United saw Basel score three times at Old Trafford and Sir Alex Ferguson was far from happy. The United boss slammed his players after the game:

It is not a problem for us because of the quality we have in the forward positions guarantees us goals. I thought there was a carelessness about us throughout the game. It’s a wake-up call in many ways.

Andre Villas-Boas has claimed Frank Lampard’s career at Chelsea is far from over. While Lampard’s continued lack of game time under the new boss means he’s anything like the nailed-on starter of seasons gone by, Villas-Boas claims is for the benefit of the team

It’s about choices for the team. Nothing wrong with it — the fact that players are changing, out-in, how they will react to changed situations. We all see things as team objectives. Frank is an established, top-quality player and one of the most important at the club and will continue to be.

Tim Cahill has given David Moyes some good news ahead of Saturday’s derby with Liverpool. The Australian was taken off after a heavy challenge from Vincent Kompany in last week’s defeat at Man City but has nothing more than a heavily bruised shin and is expected to lead the line in the first Merseyside derby of the season.

Alex Song looks likely to step in as a centre half this evening against Olympiacos. Arsenal’s injury worries continued to rack up yesterday, with Laurent Koscielny, Theo Walcott and Gervinho ruled out of the Champions League clash. With every other centre-half in the Gunners first-team squad out injured, Emmanuel Frimpong will come into central midfield as Song moves into the back-four. With a trip to Spurs on Sunday, Arsene Wenger now has ten players sidelined through injury.

Darren Bent has confirmed he’s recovered from injury and has been passed fit to play in Saturday’s home match with Wigan. The Aston Villa forward missed last week’s game at QPR but has had a poor start to the season, scoring just once in his five appearances. Bent also stated that he’s Villa’s number one choice for spot-kicks, despite Barry Bannan converting in his Loftus Road absence.

Wolves are set to enter contract discussions with James McFadden. The Scotsman is a free agent after leaving Birmingham in the summer and Mick McCarthy has admitted a deal could be struck soon- the player is currently training at Molineux as he fights his way back from the cruciate ligament damage that has sidelined him for almost a year.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Keepers are poor, I think Vorms point scoring will finish soon.
      Begovic in.
Newcastles fixtures get much harder soon, your defence will get you no points then.
Dont need NAsri if you have silva and Aguero
If your keeping rooney get rid of Young.
Possibly a stupid question this but who's Monk at the back?

It was between Welbeck and Sturridge so I went for Welbeck as I already had Mata and Man U have been in far better attacking form than Chelsea. I know it's a one week punt but I can sort it out during the international break as it's highly likely one of my other 5 expensive players will get injured.

    UCL Fantasy

So I got a very respectable 52 points in the first round of games which has shot me up to 39th in the FFS league and 23rd in Ireland. Still got Andre Santos, Mata, RVP and Messi to come tonight too :).

My 4pointer has worked a treat thus far:
    J.Evans > B.Kone (12pts)
    Walcott > Giggs (8pts)
    Hernandez > RVP (playing tonight)

    Do you recommend these substitutions?
Sommer (3pts) > Helton (Porto GK)
    Cabral (2pts) > Diawara/Valbuena
    Witsel (4pts) > Diawara/Valbunea

    Any comments are appreciated.

The Glen Johnson standard of 'right-backing' isn't good enough, but that's where Tony is and it'll have to do.

I believe Rafael has played 90 mins, but there are rumours they did the old twin switcheroo at HT.

This is why I was gutted we sold John O'Shea.

    Given (Vorm)
Bosingwa Lescott Simpson (Gabbidon, De Laet)
    Sinclair Young Silva Sessegnon (Moses)
    Rooney Dzeko Suarez

As you can see, there are too many players in my team out (Rooney, Gabbidon, DeLaet) or are likely to lose their place in the starting XI (Dzeko, Sess, Lescott)

    A. Rooney, Dzeko > Aguero, Adebayor (-4)
    B. Rooney, Dzeko > RVP, Adebayor (-4)
    C. Rooney, Sess > Adebayor, Nani (-4)

C makes it obviously harder to get Rooney back, but maybe strongest change for this week. What would you do?

Guys just took a look at Mancini’s interview. Clearly Dzeko’s situation isn’t as bad as it seems from this post. Mancini’s just torrid cos of the loss & ofcourse mad about Tevez. I know he said “Next time he will stay on the bench with me.” But I take it as a trivial comment, just like he said some weeks ago “We don’t have good enough replacements for our midfielders.” At some point, he mentions he wanted Dzeko to remain fit for the Sat clash (also cos he played the previous Sat) & that’s why he took him out. I don’t think Mancini will knee-jerk to Balo like most Dzeko owners here. Watch out for Dzeko at BLA, he’s striving badly for goals after yesterday. And when he really wants something, he gets it.

Come to think of it, Mancini would have mellowed down tonite & surely realized he erred by speaking to the media about all this shit. More reasons:
      1) I feel he might give Dzeko another chance, for he doesn’t want another Tevez-esque issue.
      2) Aguero might be rested for all we know. He’s played ~180 mins in a row now & has international games lined up.
      3) Might use the BLA game as a potential first-team striker spot selection game between Balo & Dzeko.
      4) Balo is really young, so would be less severe to bench him from a team dynamics point of view as compared to Dzeko.

Is there just cause to start looking at having a different approach to team set up to include a heavy hitting midfield with the likes of Silva, Mata, Nani and VDV all included now rather than three big guns up top?

The bonus system seem to support having three big up top but have noticed bonus points being awarded to big scoring midfielders as of late (Silva last week being the exception).

How do Arsenal manage to get so many crocked CBs? normally thought of as the most robust members of a team.

Well theres a lot of criticism about their medical/training staff. So much so that arsene came out to defend them; when he needs to do that its more than just a rumour. I think the biggest question was over the treatment of wilsheres injury.

      I would suggest:

      - A Stoke defender for their imperious home form.
      - Also don't like Sess at all.

Apart from that looks pretty good.

Sess is rubbish and likely to be dropped
From Sunderland Larsson's a better bet but theres lots of choice in mids up to 6.5.
      Otherwise I like it

Would you not wait until after this GW to WC?

    Enrique, Kompany, Simpson, Bosingwa (DeLaet)
    Silva(c) Young Dyer (Brunt, Taraabt)
    RVP(v) Dzeko Suarez

    Could do either

    A) Dzeko, Brunt, Taraabt -> Aguero, Moses, Tiote (4pt hit)
    or
    B) Dzeko->Ade, 1 transfer to carry over.
