With seven Gameweeks gone, Tony Pulis’ Stoke hover above mid-table in the Premier League and, apart from a surprise hammering at the hands of Sunderland, have made a relatively solid start to the new season.

Campaign highlights to date include draws against Manchester United and Chelsea as well as a victory over Liverpool though significantly, all three results have come at the Britannia. There’s a stark contrast between their home and away form; faced with much trickier visitors, the Potters have managed (W1 D2 L0 F2 A1), compared with (W1 D1 L2 F2 A7) on the road.

With four of their next six Premier League fixtures at the Britannia (FUL ars NEW bol QPR BLA) and given their ability to reduce the league’s most fertile strikers to impotent flops on home soil, the Stoke backline becomes a promising option in the Gameweeks ahead. These impressive defensive displays are no one-off though; since their promotion to the top flight, Pulis has continually masterminded astute resistance at the Britannia, with (15, 21, 18) home goals conceded in the past three seasons.

Ryan Shawcross is currently top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender for the Potters- his 26 FPL points just pipping Robert Huth on 21. The German’s barnstorming 2010/11 campaign saw him start this season priced at 6.0 to Shawcross’ 5.0 but the summer acquisition of both Jonathan Woodgate and Matthew Upson has seen a shift in Pulis’ focus.

Huth has been Stoke’s regular right-back this time round, though the last two games have seen him appear from the bench, with Shawcross firmly re-established as the number-one central defensive option at the Britannia. Subsequently, Huth has seen a slight dip in price, dropping 0.1, while Shawcross has risen by the same amount as a result of their respective roles and game time so far.

While Woodgate, who has been ever-present when available, is another option and a potential bargain at 4.5, his fitness will always be a nagging doubt and Fantasy managers will surely be tempted by the guaranteed game time offered by Shawcross in comparison. Shawcross has also shown a knack for picking up bonus points so far this season. Stoke have chalked up three clean sheets already and he’s returned bonus in two of these fixtures, grabbing 2 at home to Chelsea and the maximum away to West Brom.

Over his last two seasons in the Premier League, the former England U21 cap has also chipped in with his fair share at the other end of the pitch – contributing 5 goals and 4 assists. Given his side’s set-piece goal threat, you would expect him to add to that tally sooner rather than later and with such a strong resilience at the back, he makes a significant climb in our newly-updated Watchlist rankings.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

Who is the best defender for only this week under 5.2? Surely, it's not Shawcross or what?

        I disagree.
I can get 17/11 on QPR clean sheet (implied odds 39.29%) but only 77/50 (implied odds 39.37%) on Stoke clean sheet.

So, it means that Stoke defense is the best choice and ShawX (or Woodgate) is the best option? It's kind of scary to buy a defender who is playing against the team who scored 6 last week...

Well that's what the bookies reckon. They also reckon that Wigan, Norwich, Stoke, Wesbt Brom and QPR are more likely to keep clean sheets than Man U or Liverpool.

    Thoughts on this wildcard team:

    Begovic-Hennessey

    Simpson–Enrique–Kompany–Warnock- ?

    Nasri–Nani–Ramsey–Petrov– ?

    Suarez–RVP–Agbonlahor

Please suggest who should i get for final 2 places for 10.5.

I like most of it however I feel that if you went for the Krul/Vorm Gk combo many favour on here you would get better value for money. Wolves just look a bit shoddy at the moment. I'd be tempted by Woodgate and Sinclair for the last places.

Begovic and Hennessey rotate perfectly. Just look at these fixtures all at home till GW19:

I didn't say at any point that they don't rotate perfectly. Just that they are a 9.6 combo and you can get a decent 8.5 (more depending on who you started with) from Vorm/Krul. May have to play them away from home a few times though.

All the home games are a good shout for clean sheets, Stoke will be tired post Europe (I think) and Newcastle and Wolves aren't exactly prolific.

hi guys i am playing 3 at the back which trio would you back i have a.ferdinand,r.johnson,j.enquire,d.simpson,w.brown.

i have selected,r.johnson as i feel 3 in the next 4 offer a last chance for wolves and he got 2 goals last year so he could grab one against wba.
i am backing qpr to work hard and try and give a solid display for the home fans.
j.enquire who if liverpool get a clean sheet he will have to help keep nani, young at bay so he may get bps .

i would like to play simpson but i would have to lose one of the above or dyer from my midfield.
    any comments welcome cheers

But sunderland away at norwich and liverpool 1st half were awful and swansea even had chances to score. so i going for 2-0 or 3-0 arsenal win

Your midfield is the problem - its a waste of space.

IMO - see what happens with Young first. Personally, based on fixtures I'd keep Moses and sell N Dyer and Ferguson. Maybe downgrade Aguero to Suarez or Adebayor to fund the moves to sell those guys for better players.

Then in two games time, sell RVP for Aguero when hes fit again and the Man U game is out of the way.

Sell Cabaye for Ramsey of he doesn't rise, or Petrov if he does. If you're not playing him this week then you might as well get rid as fixtures are average and then terrible for gws 12-14. I have the same problem and am selling.

I will do Cabaye -> Ramsey tomorrow if he makes it through tomorrow's inty. Arse have SUN & STO both at home. I can suffer the Chelsea game as fixtures after that are good. Chelsea aren't wonderful at the back at the mo too.

Basically, you're keeping Cabaye for one good game at home then difficult fixtures. Ramsey has 2 good games at home and then 1 difficult fixture. For me, it's a no brainer.

The only way is up! They are not a bad team in anyway. Injuries/bans have ravaged them but they are getting over those. Sure, their season is already over in regards of winning the prem but they will do OK, imho.

I have to say - I don't agree. I think they are now a poor team. Walcott has something about him, but Arsene promptly dropped him. Van Persie has lost his belief ...

RVP just needs supply and Ramsey & Arteta will do that. Arteta was shipped in too late so needs time to adjust, as with Santos. Walcott is too on and off for me (fpl wise). All of them are not bad players but they need to become a team.

                Jeez, and I'm an L'pool fan! πŸ™‚

Errrm ... yeah I'm not a massive fan but you picked those players for a reason and if you break it down, they're good picks in their own right... don't see much point in getting Nani for Young now but I would be tempted to downgrade a midfielder to upgrade a forward later ... Ramsey for Young and then Suarez for Odemwingie next week?

    Kenny (Vorm)
    Bosingwa Kompany Simpson (Brown, DeLaet)
    SWP Silva Mata Hoolahan (Dyer)
    RVP Rooney Adebayor
    0.4mil

Haven't done any transfers for 2 weeks and doubt I'll go 3 weeks running without doing anything! Very tempted to get rid of Rooney - playing fixtures over form (yes I know it hasn't gone that way so far!)

    a) De Laet --> Swa Def/QPR Def/Z.Knight(??)
    b) Rooney --> Sturridge, Hoolahan --> Nani, DeLaet --> Enrique
    c) Rooney --> Suarez, SWP --> Nani, Hoolahan --> Tiote

    Cheers!

Hi ALL, Please Help! Having a rubbish start to the season.

    My team

    Given/ Vorm
Simpson, R Taylor, Ward, Bosingwa & De Laet
Walcott, Moses, Barton, Silva & Young
    Rooney, Aguero & Best
    I have £1.1m in cash

I was consider walcott to Ramsey

and Ward to P Jones for a 4 point hit.

Worth it - toher better moves?

Actually not that bad - u should have ditched Moses by now and I don't think walcott will do you many favours In the long run but with Sunderland and Stoke at home in the next two GWs it might be worth the change.

I am having the same dilemma about ditching Ward for the 4 point hit and have decided to let it ride til GW10 with WBA away and Swan at home in the mean time

I was under the solid impression that he may very well play, and still have hold of him in my team, but the odds are looking slim to none of him playing after hearing all the latest about him 'struggling to even be fit for the derby" let alone the villa clash.

On the other hand, i thankfully read this in the daily mirror, which does ease my nerves as you know what they're like, but also been in every other damn paper and sports news broadcast as well.

For all we know it could all be another Rooney injury display and come out and scores or assists.

I hope he plays, i really do, otherwise, its get rid time come friday πŸ™‚
