With seven Gameweeks gone, Tony Pulis’ Stoke hover above mid-table in the Premier League and, apart from a surprise hammering at the hands of Sunderland, have made a relatively solid start to the new season.

Campaign highlights to date include draws against Manchester United and Chelsea as well as a victory over Liverpool though significantly, all three results have come at the Britannia. There’s a stark contrast between their home and away form; faced with much trickier visitors, the Potters have managed (W1 D2 L0 F2 A1), compared with (W1 D1 L2 F2 A7) on the road.

With four of their next six Premier League fixtures at the Britannia (FUL ars NEW bol QPR BLA) and given their ability to reduce the league’s most fertile strikers to impotent flops on home soil, the Stoke backline becomes a promising option in the Gameweeks ahead. These impressive defensive displays are no one-off though; since their promotion to the top flight, Pulis has continually masterminded astute resistance at the Britannia, with (15, 21, 18) home goals conceded in the past three seasons.

Ryan Shawcross is currently top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender for the Potters- his 26 FPL points just pipping Robert Huth on 21. The German’s barnstorming 2010/11 campaign saw him start this season priced at 6.0 to Shawcross’ 5.0 but the summer acquisition of both Jonathan Woodgate and Matthew Upson has seen a shift in Pulis’ focus.

Huth has been Stoke’s regular right-back this time round, though the last two games have seen him appear from the bench, with Shawcross firmly re-established as the number-one central defensive option at the Britannia. Subsequently, Huth has seen a slight dip in price, dropping 0.1, while Shawcross has risen by the same amount as a result of their respective roles and game time so far.

While Woodgate, who has been ever-present when available, is another option and a potential bargain at 4.5, his fitness will always be a nagging doubt and Fantasy managers will surely be tempted by the guaranteed game time offered by Shawcross in comparison. Shawcross has also shown a knack for picking up bonus points so far this season. Stoke have chalked up three clean sheets already and he’s returned bonus in two of these fixtures, grabbing 2 at home to Chelsea and the maximum away to West Brom.

Over his last two seasons in the Premier League, the former England U21 cap has also chipped in with his fair share at the other end of the pitch – contributing 5 goals and 4 assists. Given his side’s set-piece goal threat, you would expect him to add to that tally sooner rather than later and with such a strong resilience at the back, he makes a significant climb in our newly-updated Watchlist rankings.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

    My prediction this week...
RVP and Ramsey to score 2 (as in FF points) and everyone to complain about having an Arsenal player (again) until next time they have an easy game, bringing them back in and complaining again.

In that case, I might stay still and get into the weekend w/o Arsenal players.

Their meetings in the last 3 season, Arsenal won 2-0 once and two goalless draw.

Its only a prediction, as an Arsenal fan I hope they kill them and rake in the points, but I doubt it...I don't classify us as a part the top 6 (for now) and nobody really brings in players from Everton, Villa, etc for an easy 2-3 weeks
It depends on the transfer though I suppose, like people getting out Rooney for RVP is ridiculous IMO..
        What transfer you thinking?

A.Young > Ramsey .. to offload United and get Arsenal coverage

          or

Aguero > RVP .. if Kun confirmed out

The first one is being seriously considered as Ramsey could be good for long-term.

Depends what you do with the money for the first, Diaby still to return could mean Ramsey rotation as Ramsey hasn't been playing well despite fantasy points.
The second one I like if Kun is out.

Obviously Diaby wouldn't be first choice, but him with Song would slightly improve our woeful defence depending on opponents.
However there are a lack of quality Mids performing between the 5.5-9.5 region so Ramsey could be good, im looking at Ben Arfa and Cleverley once they return to the starting 11.

Hi guys, need some suggestions - current team,

    Given, Vorm
Shawcross, Bosingwa, Simpson, Naylor, De Lol
    Silva, Ramsey, Mata, Brunt, Dyer
    Aguero, RVP, Ade

    1. If Aguero is not fit, who would be the best replacement for the next few gws? Suarez? Buy Rooney back? Get Gervinho and triple up on Arsenal?

    2. Wants to kick out De Leat. Who is our favorite cheapy def these days? Sideway swap with Tierney? Raise some funds elsewhere and upgrade?

    3. Plan to swap Brunt to Petrov, is he on pens for Bolton or that would be Davies? Or would it be better to get someone cheap like Moses and upgrade Mata to Nani?

    Thanks

      1. Suarez
      2. Only do De Laet > Tierney if you have 2 free's and Brunt and Aguero are fit.
      3. Also depends on amount of tranfers..

Just the 1 free transfer this week Jack. Guess I need to wait for how the injuries pans out after the int.games tomorrow.

Suarez did very will last time against United, if Vidic isn't back then he could possibly rip them apart, especially if Rio plays the way he has been so far.
If Aguero is out, Id say get Suarez, if Brunt is out id either just play Dyer, or if you really want to, get Petrov. If both are out just do the Aguero trade imo.
Im probably captaining Silva or may take a huge risk on Suarez if Vidic is definately out.
RVP is the obvious choice for you though me thinks

^Exactly was I was thinking, feels more assured to be confirmed by someone else lol.
Might do the transfer regardless of injuries anyway to avoid Aguero's price drop and catch Suarez' rise and fixtures. Cheers Jack.

going without the 3 big hitters up front til I WC, contemplating a 4 pointer SWP > Nasri/VdV but theres too much uncertainty for this week so may leave it.

Yours: Sell Kompany for a defender away to Arsenal in order to upgrade someone who is on his bench this week.

I'd also downgrade Sinclair/Petrov/Ramsay too and free up cash so that you can afford the likes of Mata and Adebayor.

Try to keep your defence relatively light as this year the points are dished out to the big guns upfront.

You just aren't thinking the game through and looking at the bigger picture. This is not just about short-term gains.

You have to look at the way baps are handed out to realise that defenders are bottom of the food chain this year.

If Bad K is stopping me from having the likes of Nani et al, then it is pointless playing expensive defenders particularly in a year when cleenies are short on the ground.

Last season was my first season, and it was pretty good - finished about 13,000th.

I played it by thinking about players in terms of their next 6 fixtures. Pretty much every transfer relied on this method of selection and it was pretty good. I also brought players in gradually when they had dgws coming up within the next 6 games.

Now I'm realising something- Last season I was SOOO LUCKY!

I tried to follow a similar system and... NOW, EVERY SINGLE TRANSFER has been forced because of injury or suspension (This has included 16 points worth of hits)

This has meant rather than improve my team week by week, i've been replacing all my strikers with new strikers who then got injured. AHHH I hate this game.

So what I've concluded is this... We all know it is a question of quality/ form versus fixtures... And here's the truth in my opinion... Playing the fixtures is the best method IF you are lucky with injuries. If not, you'll end up with a team who had good fixtures 6 weeks ago! Playing the quality/ form game is most certainly the safest option. Even playing form is a risk though, since form is temporary, so perhaps quality/ value is the safest game to play.

Needless to say I'm doing sh1te this season!

Basically, Bubbs, I believe I will never, ever, need to make any more trannies for the rest of the season thanx to the Supa-Dupa Six πŸ™‚

However, I have been mercilessly flogged and publicly stoned for my beliefs. However, I fought back and managed to beat most of them off. A few supporters arrived to support my cause along the way.

Good luck to Wales - NZ loving the way your boys have been playing and many reckon you can make the final πŸ™‚

Bubbles, Jafa and SuperWally have been having fistycuffs. Rugby related. Kiwis are feeling the pressure of their nation. They don't want to host the first RWC where the winner is a team that did not go unbeaten thru the tournament.

Don't believe all this "the Welsh are playing so pretty nonsense". The Kiwis want the Welsh in the final because they know they can't beat their RWC bogey" team, the Froggies.

Nah in all honesty, if anyone can see off NZ it's the French I believe - done it many times before. Wales being slight favourites doesn't sit easy with me, the French can turn it on against anyone quite easily on their day.

With those six, I can see your point but there'll be someone who'll spring to life (maybe RVP?) along the way and you'll want them, you know you will. πŸ˜›

Cheers, and good luck to you guys too. Wales v NZ final is what I want. If the boys can keep their belief and the way they've been playing (and not start to go into their shells now it's the big time) I think we can do it! Can't wait for Saturday.

Sorry no although Sturridge could be the answer to all our eternal prayers if he keeps on fronting up. Bit worried about his new wide role. Would wait and see on that one.

Lamps looks like he's rotation fodder this year.

Masses are buying Ramsey but I don't see him as the points factory some are hoping to see. Would only consider RVP from ARS right now.

I currently have no player from Arsenal and Liverpool, so question is RVP or Suarez..

Suarez has "A" and RVP "B" for form.
Both have favorable fixtures - Arsenal have easier games.
Team wise, Liverpool have less injury problems and also in the better form (last 6 matches).

Any comment please, if you have to choose between these two.

Suarez if you can't afford RVP.

A lot of people/sites are saying rvp isn't in form but that is far from the truth

In the games i am aware of he has scored 7 in his last 5 games including internationals not to mention arsenal have arguably the second easiest run of fixtures over the next 7 games

His touch is back. The guy will score big once over the coming weeks.

I am also looking at torres too when he returns. His touch was lovely before his rush of blood to the head

Yeah, an 8 pt hit is a lot.

But then again, RVP could get a hattrick and Vorm could have a double digit game while Aguero doesnt play and Given gets 1 pt.

Sometimes the points hits work and sometimes they don't. You have to decide whether to gamble or not.

In this case I think the odds of it working out are better than normal.

Of course. I'm not forgetting it. Makes sense thoguh if you don't have any better (c) options in gw 8 and if you compare Aguero's gw 8 & 9 fixtures vs RVP's.

At the end of the day we only have the fixtures infront of us prior to kick off and historic Opta stats.

Well, I assume f he gets him in he captains him this week.

If RVP scores he likely gets bonus too. Plus pitch time points. so even if he scores once he's likely to be on at least 8 points. Doubled is 16. Aguero not playing = 0 points.

Already made the 8 pt hit back.

Like I said, if RVP scores a brace or gets a goal and assist then you're easily looking at 20+ points with the armband on. Against not taking a hit and leaving in a player who probably gets nil points this week.

He's also changing a keeper whose fixtures are horrible after GW13 to the top scoring keeper in FPL so far.

Sometimes the gamble pays off and you score big. Sometimes you think you're doing the 'right thing' by not taking points hits and swapping out players who won't play/have bad fixtures for ones who have good ones and will play and then you shake your head in anger when you see the players you didn't take a hit for absolutely cane the points in that GW.

Sometimes you got to be prudent and sometimes in this game you have to take calculated risks.

I'd say swapping a player who won't pay for one who has one of the worst defences in the league and a keeper who faces the 2nd top scoring offense in the league to one who is a points magnet and playing a newly promoted side is probably as good as you are going to get in terms of a points hit working out in your favour.

He hasn't been rotated, and only got taken of once the game was won...

This is my problem with him too.

I got him in GW2 and his price has risen since.

Had to cheapen my def to get Nani and Silva so downgraded Kompany to Enrique but now wondering if I took out the wrong defender.

Am on a wildcard so could get Kompany back for Enrique.

Oh, this Aguero thing is annoyingly uncertain. My original plan was to do Dzeko -> Suarez and SWP -> Petrov next week, but now I'm wondering if I should do Aguero -> Suarez this week (waiting as late as poss for news). That would be a 4 pt hit, but I was going to take a hit for next week's moves anyway. All depends on how serious the Aguero injury is, I guess.

If you're decided on taking a hit anyway then, if Aguero isn't going to play, you may as well take it this week.

I would decide purely on the basis of who you want in the medium term, if you want Aguero rather than Dzeko then it would make sense to me to to keep him regardless of whether or not he plays this week. I don't see an urgent case for Suarez this week that would call for a hit so just SWP to Petrov this week makes sense to me.

I'd rather have Brunt than Ramsey this week if Brunt plays. He's a very frustrating FPL player but as he proved last week all he needs is a free kick or corner to pick up something even when he's not playing well.

I suspect you may have answered your own question there. People trying to beat the price rise actually caused the price rise!

There were though some wise words on here once, advising that it was usually bets to do transfers early in order to beat price rises/drops, and that it tended to backfire (through injury) only two or three times a season at most. i.e. you'd have to be unlucky.

Some judgement can be used. If the rises come 2/3 days before a game with nothing else happening then go for it - you have to be very very unlucky to get caught out.

If they are 1+ weeks before with 2 international games to be played then there is more risk and maybe it is better to wait.

The way I see it, any player/s in my team could get injured, not just the player I want to transfer in. So I'd rather keep my transfers until after the International games to be sure that I don't have any injuries...

Yeah bobsuncle u r right in general but not always. Look my way I must do a 4 point hit in this way. I am 0.1 short cause I waited. Even I have done my transfer earlier and then got an injury I would need to make a 4 point hit again. Seems logical?

Well Cristina for me captaincy is the most important thing in FF. Its a make or break decision plenty of the time. Next 2 GW's have extreme potential in that way. Look it like this Rooney has liv and CITY and Aguero probably won't play and that he has utd away. Both of them are owned by almost 50% of the managers. So different captain in this 2 GW's could be crucial.

For me its either RVP in both or Silva this Suarez next one. I believe the second choice is good but I don't see exploding πŸ™‚ With RVP we could have point bonanza.

And yeah I am going big on Arsenal hoping to improve my ranking.

P.S. I would love those late knee jerkers opting for RVP little bit to late, when I will be swapping back for Roonster and Aguero,

In terms of having coverage of all the top teams in attack it's good, but to me it looks a little shaky at the back and you're going to have an expensive sub every week. Unless you're benching Sturridge you're going to have an 8+ mil player on the bench and that could bite you in the arse.

I was thinking this morning that when you look at the defenders available for around 5m - Enrique, Shawcross, Warnock etc then the midfielders around 6m - Ramsey, Brunt, Cabaye, Murphee, Jarvis, Sessegnon etc...there might be some mileage in playing a little 4-3-3 and investing a bit more there. It's a difficult thing to do though, I have a mindset now of sticking to 3 at the back which would be difficult to shift.
