The international break has afforded us another chance to put more teams from further afield under the microscope for our European Fantasy managers partaking in UEFA Fantasy Champions League action. This time, we’re taking a look at FC Porto…

The side that Andre Villas-Boas mastered to the Primeira Liga, Europa League and Portuguese Cup treble last year have- aside for a recent stumble in Russia- so far carried on in pretty much the same vein

The Tactics

There may appear, on paper, to have been a gaping loss at the Dragao as the Portuguese champions lost not only their commander in chief but sold their star player, Radamel Falcao, to Athletico Madrid for record sum.

The end result, though, has been a fairly seamless transition despite cashing on over 50 million Euros of prime talent. Promoting from within, both on and off the pitch, has afforded Porto stability- new manager Vitor Pereira has pretty much stuck with the formation and tactics that lead the club to glory last season.

UEFA Average Position Map

As shown in the graphic above, and particularly in these UEFA-sourced average positions, it’s the same 4-3-3 as to which Porto deployed season – just with a slight change of personnel from before.

The back-four pretty much chooses itself with Rolando (4) and Nicolas Otamendi (30) the rocks at the centre, protecting Helton between the sticks. Alvaro Pereira (5), rumoured to have been high on Villas-Boas’ wish-list, and Jorge Fucile (13) are given plenty license to roam forward from the flanks – just like we’ve seen Jose Bosingwa and Ashley Cole do these first few weeks at Stamford Bridge. In fact, for those uninitiated on Porto, using the current Chelsea template makes for fair comparison.

Fernando (25) is the destroyer and shield for the back-line, allowing the full-backs license to forage forward – the part played by Raul Meireles or John Obi Mikel. A good player, but not so much a fantasy investment even at 5.0; the new “recovered balls” bonus will be his main ally.

In front of this screen a midfield pairing of Joao Moutinho (8) plus a.n. other can then be found. Last season Fredy Guarin was a mainstay but new signing Stefan Defour (35) has put paid to that lockdown, as the two jostle for time on the turf.

One Columbian striker has left to leave his more youthful compatriot -James Rodriguez (19) has come to the fore this season. Rodriguez is now regularly employed on the left of the front three but can be just as equally found central with Silvestre Varela (17, in top diagram) reclaiming his spot out wide if the call comes.

Kleber (11) was signed for just a couple of million Euros and has taken the role of the departed Falcao as the lead striker, with Hulk (12) continuing in his spot barraging in from the right wing as he did so successfully last season.

The Ones To Watch

Helton: Borne out of the Fabian Barthez school of goalkeeping you sometimes feel you can’t trust Helton as far as you can throw him. Luckily, he throws himself about the pitch just as much and will duck and dive for all his worth to try and keep sheets clean.

Rolando: With his central defensive partner a cool 1.0 more in price you’ll be looking at Rolando to offer a more cost-effective route into the Porto defence.

Joao Moutinho: The orchestrator. The architect. The puppet master. Moutinho dictates the run of play for the Portuguese champions and at just 6.0 is a relative bargain.

James Rodriguez: 6.5 for this “midfielder” is verging on theft. His talent and disposition means he is almost certainly worth a few million more. Think Daniel Sturridge at Chelsea but with the extra points for being classified as a midfielder. A downright snip of an option who is well worth considering.

Hulk: The player may have been named as such because he looks like Lou Ferigno, but he plays just as the name suggests too. A beast of a forward who plays with a power and ferocity that makes his 9.0 worthy of consideration- just don’t make him angry.

Kleber: A real bargain at just 6.5 and leading the line for the Portuguese champions. Do half of what his predecessor Falcao did in Europe and Fantasy managers will be rolling in the points. The only caveat is going to be his fitness leading into the coming weeks. Having damaged his collarbone in the defeat at Zenit last gameweek a prognosis on a return, as of yet, is something we’ve been unable to find.

United wont agree to that. That interview SAF did 2 weeks ago stated that it's not really in United's interest, they can compete well enough with the current TV deal and that it would be bad for the PL.

There is a big difference in playing against Montenegro/Estonia and playing against Portugal/Croatia. Playing against Czech Republic and against Bosnia is not that different though... Turkey was possible in both cases.

According to Jonathan Wilson, Vidic has just retired from international football after his costly penalty miss this evening:

          Silly reason to retire too.
Lampard would have retired 30 times over if missing important penalties for England/Chelsea meant you had to retire.

Aye I saw his tekkers, he thinks he's Modric all of a sudden. Doyle and McGeady were muck. Walters should get games, he was excellent when he came on. On a sour note, Stephen Ward is back from suspension 😕

Maybe next week when we play qpr in the London derby, Best could equally score against Tot at home IMO. Eve are usually tough opponent for Chelsea. We lost at Stamford in the cup last year.

That's why I haven't pulled the trigger. If I took the imminent Sturridge price rise out of the equation I would probably stand pat. Trying to keep as much $ in the till as possible to upgrade mid the following week.

Lads what transfer to do and why?

    - Rooney to RVP and keep Dzeko this week? Bring probably Sturridge next week.
    - Dzeko to RVP and have ultimate strike force Rooney, RVP, Suarez and really unbalanced team.
    - Ignore and leave the strike force as it is and improve the defense bring Schawcross for Briggs as a long term solution which means I won't have to double on New against Tot

    Thanks in advance and cheers,

P.S. A;ready have Walcott and Ramsey in mid and I could captain Silva this GW why not.

I think Rooney is a season keeper, he is good within any fixture and always brings home the points, so wouldn't change him out unless you cant help it.
Dzeko is just in crap form atm, it's not worth having him at all cause he just isn't bringing anything in any more. Maybe change him out if you have the money just because anyone will probably get more points then him. Why not change him to Sturridge now, unless you really want RVP.

Yeah I have the funds but Dzeko scored for Bosnia and I think actually he could score more than Roonster this week. I smell a red card for Roonster in the Liv game. Maybe. And that won't leave me space for any kind of transfer next GW.

Funny how it was the biggest deal in the world when Henry handled the ball but when Cox handled it then 1 second later turned to the ref to get Armenia's keeper sent off for handball that never was it's suddenly ok to cheat. Where are the outcrys for fair play and bans and replays now for unsporting behaviour ??

Very dissapointed in those comments. T Henry handed the ball on purpose for a place in the world cup finals and there were 2 french players offside too. The hand ball tonight or maybe not was not as obvious. Silly comments. You obviously have no passion for football or never have been at a game where a tough decision has hurt you.
Nothing unsporting tonight you clown, go away and support the french you eadjit!

Watched France Bosnia today. As a Dzeko owner i was *very* encouraged. The goal was excellent-took in back to goal, shook the defender with ease, moved the bang, and rifled in the corner from what? 20 yards? But it was the way he looked after the ball that impressed me. Very comfortable and moved it intelligently.

    Pleased 🙂

I got a feeling that even though United's fixtures are a bit shit that Rooney will still do pretty dam well in them and gather some points. He is always a season keeper, shame about Aguero tho! I would go Roo just cause i have him and I think he will serve you better then Stewie.
Think you would feel happier with ur team to see the shiny head of Rooney lightening it up.

I agree Boom Boom. I don't think they'll risk Aguero anyhow. Not even the medics in Argentina decided to risk him against any of the matches, and that's saying something. I'm originally from Latin America....if their health system says it ain't cool for Aguero to play, then it DEFINITELY ain't cool for Aguero to play.

Tis a terrible shame about aguero, i defo do not think he will start now against villa. Sturridge is tempting, but even i do go sturridge i would still get petrov to leave me to upgrade to suarez the following wek for best, even though best has wigan at home in GW 9.

Hmm decisions decisions, think i might just go out on a whim and get rooney, yes he has the harder fixtures than sturridge, but rooney seems to thrive in big games here many might see him finding it tough. 🙂

Yea true, but he will never hit out in FPL, SAF wouldnt have it. It is a risk but then i just think he is always someone who brings home the bacon! I swear secretly he plays just to make my team better.
This season is all about how well the player is doing, and not necessarily what fixtures they have coming up. It can be seen in the likes of United-Ars etc etc. Rooney is playing well in FPL and is getting a gd average for points. Great replacement points wise for Aguero as they are both bringing in the same points.
Got a feeling he will shine after the international incident just to stick it to the man!

"This season is all about how well the player is doing, and not necessarily what fixtures they have coming up" >>> true all over for this season mate, its proving form is winning its arguement over fixtures this year round, even agbonlahor could manage a few against city, im putting nothing past it, plus, city haven't played anyone great as yet in premier league so could very well happen.

Oh yeah i aint gonan make the transfers right now, gonan wait for even futher conformation on aguero, but only to check, i know he is going to play, FITBOLNOTSOCCER's comment above is sensible enough.

Also agree that rooney is under fegie's eye when he plays and would not tolerate anything like lashing out like he did for england last friday.

Still, just,...only just tempted to get sturridge as it allows me the suarez boat to jump on GW 9, i shall jsut decide friday night i reckon 🙂

City drew at fulham... can see it happening again to them at Villa, just because everyone at villa is doing really well atm. Keeping Gabby on my team, hope he bangs in a few to be honest!

SAF will have stern words with him before the game on Saturday and tell him not to do anything daft... Just play like usual and get some in the back of the net to get over what happened during the international.

Either way your getting a quality player, I think if you need the money elsewhere and to get someone like suarez then go for the cheaper option just so it makes sure you can do what you want next time around!!

It seems that David Platt is really concerned that Aguero will not be fit for this weekend's match against Aston Villa. I would say it's 90 percent sure that Aguero will not play, not the whole ninety for sure anyways. And Mario has a knock. Platt said he is not afraid to only have Dzeko as lone striker, they can manage without any other strikers.

With this in mind, I have transferred once more, give feedback if you would please

    Vorm
    Barnett Simpson Bosingwa
    Ramsey Silva Nasri Nani
    Rooney Sturridge Adebayor

This leaves me with 3.1 in the bank. I am planning on getting Aguer0 back when he is back to full fitness, probably a couple of weeks at least (since the Manchester derby is next weekend). Thoughts?

That's what I thought. I think in the war between VdV or Adebayor on my team...Adebayor wins out. He's just more trustworthy to get me points and play full matches as long as he's healthy imo. In a couple of weeks, my frontline will be Rooney, Aguero, Adebayor and stick Mata in the midfield instead of Nasri. It's all part of my master plan... 🙂

Play N taylor over Simpson... More of a chance of a clean sheet. Just cause Spurs are likely to score with their big hitters.
