Another midweek without any Champions League action -we’ve got the Carling Cup to look forward to this Tuesday and Wednesday- means there’s plenty time to pause and look back at how the sides from foreign soils fared once more…

We’re half way through the group stages of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy game and sides now need form to either jump that final hurdle or desperately keep themselves in the competition. In the weekend gone by, form wasn’t necessarily the friend of a few sides in question…

La Liga

The reigning European Champions of Barcelona found themselves caught short at home for the first time this season when they drew 0-0 at home to Sevilla. Despite the obvious Barcelona pressure, the final minutes of this game really could and should have seen Pep Guardiola’s side skipping home with the three points.

Barca were awarded a 90th minute penalty and up stepped World Player of the Year Lionel Messi who was, after Freddi Kanoute received his marching orders for two quick yellow cards after disturbing the play, to meet his match in Sevilla goalkeeper Javi Varas- the saved spot-kick left the game all square.

Real Madrid traveled to Malaga, with an intriguing match-up against old boss Manuel Pellegrino on the cards. Jose Mourinho’s side swept aside their cash-rich opponents thanks to a ruthless display of finishing from a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.

He might not have got a hat-trick this time round but Gonzalo Higuain started the ball rolling when he evaded the Malaga defence to get on the end of Angel Di Maria’s ball and round the keeper. Then Ronaldo was left to do what he does best as, after a few games without a goal, he too showed he could score hat-tricks for fun with three equally well-taken goals inside a devastating fourteen minute first-half spell.

Villarreal lost at home to the current La Liga leaders; not Barca, not Real, but Levante, as their astounding La Liga story keeps rolling on. After a strong, but ultimately fruitless, performance away at the Etihad in midweek, Villarreal reverted to type and carried on with their travails down the chilly corridor of defeat.

Leaving it until nigh on the last minute Valencia scraped together a 1-1 draw at home to Marcelo Bielsa’s latest project at Athletico Bilbao. Roberto Soldado ghosted through the Bilbao defence and rounded the keeper to score from the narrowest of angles. A nasty first half injury to Sergio Canales will be as equally pressing to fans of Los Che.

Bundesliga

German champions of Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways, trouncing FC Cologne 5-0. Shinji Kagawa gave the title holders an early lead when he slotted home Kevin Grosskreutz’ pull back from the bye-line. Some pinball in the box a quarter of an hour later saw Marcel Schmelzer eventually curl the ball home. Polish striker Robert Lewandowski then scored a brace on either side of the break to put the game beyond any doubt, before Sebastien Kehl’s late surging run and header made it five and out.

We’ll have a Scout report on Borussia Dortmund coming up tomorrow with a look at their shape and style of play and those players with which we have our keenest eyes on.

After conceding for the first time in months at Napoli in midweek, Bayern Munich slipped to an unexpected 2-1 defeat away at Hannover. Jerome Boateng’s early sending off gave the home side the advantage to surge into a two goal lead before they, too, had a man dismissed but, despite a late goal from substitute David Alaba giving them hope, Bayern couldn’t find the net again and suffered their first Bundesliga defeat since the opening week of the season.

Bayer Leverkusen were beaten 1-0 at home by last season’s Champions League semi-finalists Schalke, meaning two out of three of our Bundesliga-based sides stumbled to defeat this weekend.

Ligue 1

Two of our French-based Champions League sides faced off against each on Sunday night and it was Lille, coming back from a goal down to win 3-1, who continued to prove that their title winning side of last season wasn’t a fluke occurrence. Jimmy Briand scored the sole Lyon goal after a sublime ball from Yoann Gourcuff, making his first Ligue 1 start since May, cut through the heart of the Lille back-line.

Moussa Sow levelled affairs with a crafty backheel just before half-time after Hugo Lloris fumbled a corner. Another corner saw Marko Basa give the lead to Lille when he headed home Dmitri Payet’s ball then our Engishman abroad, Joe Cole, settled affairs when a break found him on the spot to slide the ball home. Well done Joe.

Marseille silenced the boo boys for a day at least as Andre Ayew, despite missing a penalty twenty minutes into the game, scored the two goals Didier Deschamp’s side needed to notch only their second win of their league campaign.

Serie A

AC Milan found themselves three goals down and floundering at half time away at relegation positioned Lecce. Hope of a comeback seemed unlikely but the introduction of both Kevin-Prince Boateng and Alberto Aquilani after the break inspired the visitors to an incredible 4-3 victory.

Boateng was the second player of this report to score a quick smart hat-trick as his trio of goals between the 49th minute and the 63rd saw AC Milan back on level footing and right back in the fixture. Mario Yepes completed the full recovery twenty minutes later when a set play was eventually left for him to head home at the back post from a couple of yards out.

Heading into the weekend on the back of three consecutive Serie A defeats, Inter Milan could really have done with a change of fortune. Claudio Ranuieri was given something to smile about after tight 1-0 victory- Thiago Motta rose highest to power home and score Inter’s first goal at the San Siro this season.

Napoli, meanwhile, recorded their second draw in quick succession, after a goalless encounter away at early season form side Cagliari. Not a heavy abundance of talking points in this one, seemingly.

The Rest of Europe

Ajax: 1-1 against Feyenoord might not have been ideal but the home side will take it. After going a goal down and having Kenneth Vermeer sent off after last gasp foul, Jan Vertonghen headed in Theo Janssen’s corner to level matters.

Zenit: A first half rush of goals saw Zenit cruise to a 3-1 victory away at Rostov yesterday afternoon. Danny got the ball rolling, leaving Alexander Bukharov to finish affairs, with an Aleksander Lukovic penalty sandwiched between the two.

CSKA: A high-scoring match against the nouveau riche of Anzhi saw CSKA head home on the back of a 5-3 victory in which Seydou Doumbia scored a hat-trick and Alan Dzagoev scored one and set up another three.

Porto: A five goal hammering at home to Nacional saw Porto stay top of the Primeira Liga on goal difference. Stefan Defour, Walter, Christian Sapunaru, Kleber and Hulk all bagged a goal apiece.

Benfica: A 1-0 victory away at Beira Mar Benfica kept their place as one of the Portuguese forerunners thanks to an Oscar Cardozo goal.

FC Basel: The “future of Swiss football” Xherdan Shaqiri scored the only goal of the game as Basel grabbed a slender 1-0 victory away from home.

I've got Suarez but I was just looking at the stats and he's quite poor VFM isn't he? He's the 9th most expensive forward but ranks only 20th in the PPG category and 25th in the Value (season) department; I was surprised at that.

I read somewhere on here that he flatters to deceive. The stats seem to agree with that opinion.

I have him too and am very frustrated with his pointscoring. He's not overrated in a football sense; his play is incredible and he had hatfuls of chances to choose from against Norwich. Many of which he created out of unpromising situations. But he is incredibly wasteful and has poor chance conversion rates so in an FPL sense he is overrated. I gave him 3 GWs to prove himself including the Norwich game - now he has two left.

To clarify he is a unique talent but doesn't have a ruthless, crushing mentality that scores goal after goal. He doesn't keep going, he'll stop after the one assist or one goal. He doesn't blast them in like Rooney or Aguero or even (gulp) Darren Bent.

530,000, don't worry, you're not alone. In fact since there's 2.6 million players, there's a >80% chance the next commenter will be below you! (Just kidding - I'd like to think FFScout is a lot better than average)...

I'm 160,819. I had a terrible opening to the season, so I'm delighted now. I seem to do this every year though, steadily build. Suppose you've just gotta join the right bandwagons and not make too many punts. Been really lucky with my latest crop of players.

How many hits do you take? Obviously hits are to be avoided but GW after GW I sit on non-scoring players and wish I'd taken a hit because I see players score who I fancied but didn't take because of the points penalty. I remember a guy saying he had his best year (top 1000) crazily following his whims and taking 4pt and 8pt hits as he felt like it. That actually is the kind of FPL I want to play, is it generally a bad idea or worth it?

I took quite a few hits last year, probably 4 points every two games on average, and I think it really did pay off. Last gameweek was my first points hit of the season (4 pts) but that's mainly down to me using my wildcard already and my signings luckily hitting form.

Points hits are worth it if you look at your team and don't expect decent number of points from a handful of them in that gameweek.

Cool to hear. To put it bluntly, I think I'm going to start acting on impulse more now. Most of the GWs up to now I've agonized over endless factors all GW and made 0 or 1 changes, having to put up with a team I wasn't entirely happy with but too afraid to risk points changing. It's a miserable way to play the game and I might as well aim for the top or fail tryin'.

I guess the old argument that used to persuade me against hits was "if new player doesn't outscore old player by at least 4, you've lost" but that's only part of the picture. Usually players score in a run of form and that can set you up better for future GWs too even if it doesn't pay for itself in the first GW.

Yeh exactly, gotta look at the long-term eh. I had a friend last year who criticised me for point hits saying they were counter intuitive, but I finished above him in the league.

Makes the game a whole lot more exciting.

The problem is impulse buying at the expense of a hit can backfire as that player is a flash in the pan. I think you have to be absolutely certain it will come off long term or its a waste. I just took a hit for VDV in for Young, a good hit as I will make money and VDV is in form and plays up top. However I would never take a hit for a defender as their points return are simply not worth it. I think the odd hit is healthy but go overboard at your peril

Morning all. I must admit my faith in my FPL decisions is shaky right now, I’ve had a good number of GWs where my midfield has scored nothing despite looking okay, defence has been max 1 CS, and only 1/3 strikers managed to score. What am I missing? I always seem to be 1 GW behind and my gambles have mostly gone wrong. Sick of chasing last week's points, do point me in the right direction.

    Vorm (Schwarzer)
Kompany Enrique Bosingwa (R Taylor NTaylor)

I've been trying to avoid kneejerks though. All four you mentioned have had a crap time in the last coupla GWs, but is this exactly the wrong time to give up on them? Utd fixtures get much better after this and you expect some Nani-flavoured thrashings, Bosingwa is one of the cheaper ways to get an attacking defender in a top team and Sunday probably was a fluke. Like I say, I don't want to chase last week's points.

I have been considering Mata > VDV though so might do that before 4am changes... and yes Agbonlahor probably has to go - maybe Bendtner - any other suggestions around that bracket?

Bosingwa could still be good value it can be argued. He would be last on the list. I mentioned him because it is easy to free up funds by dropping him and i doubt you will miss out on any huge hauls.

Mata is a complete rip-off. VDV in has to be your priority.

I would never have bought Agbonlahor in the first place. He has never been a goalscorer and i have never particularly rated him. His purple patch will a distant memory soon.

Nani - lots of money to spend on a player who shares his points around with Rooney and Young. Rotation issues also..still a good pick probably..

Agbonlahor is on probation, only reason I've kept him around is because fixtures for next two games are ok. May well switch to Bendtner, Ba or Adebayor for this GW. Really tempted to try Balotelli but totally going to get burnt by rotation?

Any input to the following proposal:

    Suarez and Petrov out

    VDV and Graham in

Leave me with a line up of:

    Vorm, Schwarzer

    Kompany, Bosingwa, Shawcross, Enrique, Simpson

    Nani, Silva, VDV, Murphy, Tiote

    RVP, Sturridge, Graham

Graham would only be a two week play until I can downgrade Bosingwa for someone around 5 mil and upgrade Graham to the Bendtner.

i dont know why people waste so much money on defenders......as highest scoring def giving me 40 points and mid-60-65 and forward 60-70 till now......i prefer to invest max of money to my attacking line up.....its giving me gd result

        Agreed.

You can't predict clean sheets this year. The last few seasons Chelsea and United have been pretty reliable clean sheet magnets but it's not happening this year.

I'm planning to downgrade my defenders to 4-5mil but maybe keeping company.

i think Kompany (who will probably be top defender) and Enrique (who will be up there, and at 5.0 isnt expensive) are worth having
Nobody else over 4 for me though!
Still lets me have 4 big mids, plus Adebayor, 1 of the 'big three' and Sturridge up front.

They look like decent moves. Graham has a good fixture this week and you should be able to bench him next week. I agree with the discussion everyone else was having about investing too much in defence, but looks like you're going to address that by shipping Bosingwa out anyway.

I think one of the decisions for most people right now is 3 expensive FWs or 3 expensive mids. Really good arguments for a few different instantiations of either strategy.

but until now, 9 GWs went, looking at top players overall, you can see they just have 3-4 big up front.

Wow. Would not really have expected that. The #1 in the world has a 13 man team. Kirkland and Frimpong don't play.

You're right -- big 5 up front. More balanced DF.

I see those teams, though, and the first reaction I have is that I don't think they're sustainable. They're populated with bottom or mid-table attackers from Newcastle, Bolton, Villa, West Brom (and Anderson). Seems hit or miss for a few attacking positions. I like to see all big-team players in attack and then a real cheapie instead of 3 mid-priced mids

I know discussion is sparse this time of night, but check out this recent DF set up:

    Vorm Krul

    Enrique Shawcross Wilkinson Simpson Barnett

Doubling up on both Stoke (9.1m total) and Newcastle (8.7m total). Cheap clean sheets, a little hope for attacking points every now and then, ditto for bonus points, and more cash allocated to attacking players (only .4m in the bank).

Doubling up on Newcastle paid off this past weekend. Felt good.

I quite like the 4 big guns approach, wether that's 3 big strikers and 1 big midfielder, or 2 big strikers and 2 big midfielders.

At the moment I'm looking at Rooney, RVP, Silva, VDV.... considering over the next few weeks moving to Rooney, Aguero, RVP and Silva- and then having a cheap midfield trilogy of Larsson-Drenthe-Anderson. Not sure if I'll go with that though.

But basically, I don't think you can have 5 big guns in your top 8 without the rest of your team being dirt. Plus there's no need to: there are decent 6-6.5m options emerging in midfield and up front now.

Well I didn't watch the game at the weekend, but it looks like Sessegnon is upping his returns, however I'm a big fan of Larsson. Just think he's a classy little player. If you're looking to bring him in now though, be aware he's a booking away from a suspension.

attackers will outscore defenders over the season.

You have a point that they do seem to have only 4 big attacking names each, but I am predicting that the money's better spent up front than on DF, w/ at least 5 expensive attackers.

It always seems to vary a bit at different points throughout the season. Heavy hitting mids did well for a while last year, but some stretches trend toward strong defenses, others toward stacking the front line. Depends on who's fit, who's being rotated... In short, no formula that I picked up on...

Rukawa - first thing you need to learn is that there is NO WINNING FORMULA in FPL.

A season or two ago Mr Reeson won by using cheap defenders, but I'm sure if you look at his history(or anyone else's history that has won or done well in FPL) then you will find an "expensive" defender somewhere in their teams, even if it was only for a double GW or a week or two.

2-3 years ago there was a ManU double gw and some brave souls broke FPL rule no 1(Never captain a defender) and they captained Vidic and thanks to 2 CS, a goal and bonuspoints he was the top scorere that week with 40+ points.

Some weeks the Kompany, Boswinga and Baines will outscore Agbonlahor/Sturridge & Co. Just look at this gw when Sturridge was taken off and scored 1 point.

Follow your own stretegy and don't try and copy the guy at the top's team. Those point's are history. You can't make it up. He might be reconsidering his strategy for the next couple of weeks.

              I know I am.

              😉

Not true to say always im afraid. Certainly at the moment investment up front is necessary. But in the mid 2000s defenders were getting a lot more clean sheets and a more balanced team was required. John Terry and Carragher were expensive but reliable point getters.

Next year may be different again......

Rukawa - you need to stop living in the past friend. Last season Arsenal had Cesc and Nasri and Citeh did not have Kun/Nasri etc. Spuds did not have Adebayor.

BTW, when Adebayor played for Arsenal 2 or 3 seasons ago he scored 200+ points if I'm not mistaken. Just look at his history. No reason why he can't go on a good run again.

People get caught up in how much a player costs- a "big" price doesn't necessarily make a player a better choice. Adebayor is a prime example, as is Sturridge. Ramires may well turn out to be in this category too if he keeps his form up. There are others. Rather than trying to find ways to get 5 expensive players into your front 8, look for players who are cheaper but will still get decent returns.

Anyone can put 5 of your "big" players in their team and pack the rest out with Fergusons and Reo-Cokers, but the trick is to pick up the right mid-price players at the right time.

Prime example is Sturridge vs Torres
Torres on form seems the better options, and will probably outscore Sturridge come seasons end, but seeing as Torres is 4.0 more expensive and gives you a..say..Petrov instead of a VdV or a Nani.

                All good points.

I get antsy tinkering with mid-price players though. Murphy, Petrov, Ramsey, Cabaye, O'Hara, Sinclair... there's not all that much separating them except for fixtures, so I get too tempted to play the fixtures.

More regret, more points hits for me. If played well, it definitely pays off (like having Adam, Carroll, Odemwingie or Brunt at the right time last year). But i'll try to work around heavy hitters this year.

I'm on the verge of shipping him out for Shawcross. I almost wish he was banned for the upcoming weekend to make the decision easier. You'll wince every time he gets an assist or a goal, but ultimately I think the difference in points between the two will be minimal by the end of the season, and it gives you the best part of a million to spend elsewhere.

      Got rid tonight:

      Bosingwa to Wilkinson
      Bale to VDV

(had Bale based on OPTA stats. Had more attempts on goal the first 7 weeks than all other mids except for Dempsey. With VDV back in the middle though, Bale's role has really been minimized again, like last season)

True, but he's started 4 games on the trot to a team that has gotten clean sheets. And my auto-sub DFs are starters (for the time being) on teams that have kept cleanies too, so i'd be quite unlikely to really lose that much on him as an uncertainty, but I gain cash.

I dont justify it, I know he is a problem but at the moment I have more pressing issues.
I'm saying it is silly to transfer him in...obviously

Hardly, seeing as I actually try to help others on here and you don't, I don't think thats fair.
By the way, it isn't double standards, I know De Laet is a problem, I wouldn't bring in a non-playing player, he was playing when I got him, was just unlucky enough to see him get dropped (and deservedly so) and have had to do more important transfers before fixing him up, im just saying it is silly to bring in a non-playing player especially after the last two.
Finally, read over your post, something about pots and kettles comes to mind

Why would Moses be a bad sub? He's guaranteed to play every single week... Besides, why would you want to have a player on your bench who scores 5+ points every week?

That's only a problem if the sub is expensive and thus causing you to lose out on a better player who could be in your actual playing team. But if that's not the case, it's far better to have a sub who gets good points. If they are needed, they might contribute well, and also they will hold their value (or even increase it).

I still believe one v. cheap sub, with two other cheap subs who will play.
In this season of big hitters up front, you've got use your money on having the best, not warming the bench. But be prepared for rotation.

Your last sentence contradicts what you say. If your big hitters get rotated, they might play 20 minutes and get you 1 point, or they might not play at all, an you have to bring on your cheap subs.

No it doesn't. Be prepared for rotation, not ruled by it.
Ferguson is on my bench and I believe he will stay on it all season....thus freeing up funds for bigger hitters.....

I have neither VdV or RvP. Instead I have Adebayor and Ramsey, which explains my bad gameweek.

With VdV I'm sure he'll start to get rested, as 'arry will want to give Defoe a run out.

2 spurs players is too much for me, and i don't want to get rid of adebayor just yet either.

Apologies for reposting but looking for some opinions to try and recover my season. Trailing in work league by around 120pts having won it the last 2 seasons.

Having a disaster of a season but I feel my Team / Squad is good. Please rate / advise

    Given, Vorm
    Bosingwa, Shawcross, Enrique, Kompany, Simpson
    Brunt, Silva, VDV, Sinclair, Dyer
    Adebayor, Rooney, Suarez

    Normally play a 3-4-3.

.3m in the bank with transfers played this week (Brought in VDV and Shawcross)

    Any advice welcome

It is actually very good, I wouldn't change much, just keep the faith and rewards will come. Maybe a bit too much invested in defense still..? 4/5 are 5mil+, you could probably lose one (or maybe even two?) to get in a nice heavy hitter for either Sinclair or Suarez (in 2 weeks).

you have quite a lot of money tied up in defense (given, bosingwa, shawcross, enrique, kompany) so might be worth it to downgrade a couple of them to have more cash to spend elsewhere. also not sure if you want two swansea mids long term. i'd say worth keeping suarez the next two weeks but then you probably want to get rid (either downgrade for sturrige or upgrade for aguero/rvp).

I'm still convinced that a more balanced approach is needed to do well with the hope that the clean sheets start to happen for the usual suspects and that the cheaper options in defence start to fail. The only reason that both Dyer and Sinclair are in the midfield is that I transferred in Sinclair as a replacement for SWP last week. I will be looking to replace one of them during the next few weeks depending on performance and available funds.

        Thanks for the comments
