Another midweek without any Champions League action -we’ve got the Carling Cup to look forward to this Tuesday and Wednesday- means there’s plenty time to pause and look back at how the sides from foreign soils fared once more…

We’re half way through the group stages of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy game and sides now need form to either jump that final hurdle or desperately keep themselves in the competition. In the weekend gone by, form wasn’t necessarily the friend of a few sides in question…

La Liga

The reigning European Champions of Barcelona found themselves caught short at home for the first time this season when they drew 0-0 at home to Sevilla. Despite the obvious Barcelona pressure, the final minutes of this game really could and should have seen Pep Guardiola’s side skipping home with the three points.

Barca were awarded a 90th minute penalty and up stepped World Player of the Year Lionel Messi who was, after Freddi Kanoute received his marching orders for two quick yellow cards after disturbing the play, to meet his match in Sevilla goalkeeper Javi Varas- the saved spot-kick left the game all square.

Real Madrid traveled to Malaga, with an intriguing match-up against old boss Manuel Pellegrino on the cards. Jose Mourinho’s side swept aside their cash-rich opponents thanks to a ruthless display of finishing from a certain Cristiano Ronaldo.

He might not have got a hat-trick this time round but Gonzalo Higuain started the ball rolling when he evaded the Malaga defence to get on the end of Angel Di Maria’s ball and round the keeper. Then Ronaldo was left to do what he does best as, after a few games without a goal, he too showed he could score hat-tricks for fun with three equally well-taken goals inside a devastating fourteen minute first-half spell.

Villarreal lost at home to the current La Liga leaders; not Barca, not Real, but Levante, as their astounding La Liga story keeps rolling on. After a strong, but ultimately fruitless, performance away at the Etihad in midweek, Villarreal reverted to type and carried on with their travails down the chilly corridor of defeat.

Leaving it until nigh on the last minute Valencia scraped together a 1-1 draw at home to Marcelo Bielsa’s latest project at Athletico Bilbao. Roberto Soldado ghosted through the Bilbao defence and rounded the keeper to score from the narrowest of angles. A nasty first half injury to Sergio Canales will be as equally pressing to fans of Los Che.

Bundesliga

German champions of Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways, trouncing FC Cologne 5-0. Shinji Kagawa gave the title holders an early lead when he slotted home Kevin Grosskreutz’ pull back from the bye-line. Some pinball in the box a quarter of an hour later saw Marcel Schmelzer eventually curl the ball home. Polish striker Robert Lewandowski then scored a brace on either side of the break to put the game beyond any doubt, before Sebastien Kehl’s late surging run and header made it five and out.

We’ll have a Scout report on Borussia Dortmund coming up tomorrow with a look at their shape and style of play and those players with which we have our keenest eyes on.

After conceding for the first time in months at Napoli in midweek, Bayern Munich slipped to an unexpected 2-1 defeat away at Hannover. Jerome Boateng’s early sending off gave the home side the advantage to surge into a two goal lead before they, too, had a man dismissed but, despite a late goal from substitute David Alaba giving them hope, Bayern couldn’t find the net again and suffered their first Bundesliga defeat since the opening week of the season.

Bayer Leverkusen were beaten 1-0 at home by last season’s Champions League semi-finalists Schalke, meaning two out of three of our Bundesliga-based sides stumbled to defeat this weekend.

Ligue 1

Two of our French-based Champions League sides faced off against each on Sunday night and it was Lille, coming back from a goal down to win 3-1, who continued to prove that their title winning side of last season wasn’t a fluke occurrence. Jimmy Briand scored the sole Lyon goal after a sublime ball from Yoann Gourcuff, making his first Ligue 1 start since May, cut through the heart of the Lille back-line.

Moussa Sow levelled affairs with a crafty backheel just before half-time after Hugo Lloris fumbled a corner. Another corner saw Marko Basa give the lead to Lille when he headed home Dmitri Payet’s ball then our Engishman abroad, Joe Cole, settled affairs when a break found him on the spot to slide the ball home. Well done Joe.

Marseille silenced the boo boys for a day at least as Andre Ayew, despite missing a penalty twenty minutes into the game, scored the two goals Didier Deschamp’s side needed to notch only their second win of their league campaign.

Serie A

AC Milan found themselves three goals down and floundering at half time away at relegation positioned Lecce. Hope of a comeback seemed unlikely but the introduction of both Kevin-Prince Boateng and Alberto Aquilani after the break inspired the visitors to an incredible 4-3 victory.

Boateng was the second player of this report to score a quick smart hat-trick as his trio of goals between the 49th minute and the 63rd saw AC Milan back on level footing and right back in the fixture. Mario Yepes completed the full recovery twenty minutes later when a set play was eventually left for him to head home at the back post from a couple of yards out.

Heading into the weekend on the back of three consecutive Serie A defeats, Inter Milan could really have done with a change of fortune. Claudio Ranuieri was given something to smile about after tight 1-0 victory- Thiago Motta rose highest to power home and score Inter’s first goal at the San Siro this season.

Napoli, meanwhile, recorded their second draw in quick succession, after a goalless encounter away at early season form side Cagliari. Not a heavy abundance of talking points in this one, seemingly.

The Rest of Europe

Ajax: 1-1 against Feyenoord might not have been ideal but the home side will take it. After going a goal down and having Kenneth Vermeer sent off after last gasp foul, Jan Vertonghen headed in Theo Janssen’s corner to level matters.

Zenit: A first half rush of goals saw Zenit cruise to a 3-1 victory away at Rostov yesterday afternoon. Danny got the ball rolling, leaving Alexander Bukharov to finish affairs, with an Aleksander Lukovic penalty sandwiched between the two.

CSKA: A high-scoring match against the nouveau riche of Anzhi saw CSKA head home on the back of a 5-3 victory in which Seydou Doumbia scored a hat-trick and Alan Dzagoev scored one and set up another three.

Porto: A five goal hammering at home to Nacional saw Porto stay top of the Primeira Liga on goal difference. Stefan Defour, Walter, Christian Sapunaru, Kleber and Hulk all bagged a goal apiece.

Benfica: A 1-0 victory away at Beira Mar Benfica kept their place as one of the Portuguese forerunners thanks to an Oscar Cardozo goal.

FC Basel: The “future of Swiss football” Xherdan Shaqiri scored the only goal of the game as Basel grabbed a slender 1-0 victory away from home.

Looking to get some opinions and RMTs 😀 team is,

    Given,Vorm
Bosingwa, Shawcross, Simpson, Naylor, De Laet
    Silva, Ramsey, VDV, Bale, Dyer
RVP, Suarez, Adebayor - 0.4 in Bank

and my question for gw 11 (I know gw 10 hasn't even begun but I'm bored), Suarez+Bale out for Rooney+budget mid or Nani+Bendtner?

Anyone else jumping on Sunderland for gw 12-15 or is just me?

Good team. I'd personally go nani and bendtner. I also think you need to get rid of N Taylor and De Laet. Vorm in goal and a Swansea defender is too much. Sunderlands fixtures are excellent and I'll be bringing in larsson in 12, unless Sess does well over next two weeks.

Thanks, DL is gone the first chance I have a free transfer. Nani+Bendtner seems more logical since they both can bring in the points compared to having another budget mid with Rooney. But I'm concerned not getting Rooney as everyone and their grandma has him and I will definitely left behind when he scores big and Nani gets rotated with Young.

So based on that I should just get Rooney? 😕 and why am I answering my own questions..

Yeah. Rooney could score big. He could also play deeper and not score too well even in victory. At his price I just don't think he's worth getting in. For now.

Okay I think i'm misundertanding something. Have looked on total fpl and CTC and both show Bosingwa, with no transfers in or out, yet on the FPL site he does seem to have been shipped out by a lot of people (1 thousand transfers in, 42 thousand out), and should probably approaching a price drop......Or am I missing something?

His price is protected now, so any transfers in and out for the next while don't count towards rises/falls.
He was red-flagged after his suspension for some stupid reason, but they fixed it up and now he is automatically protected.

I have a similar team like yours and looking to get Rooney for Sunderland. Although Nani or Young is cheaper, I think Rooney is still the main man for Utd's attack plus he takes the penalty and close range freekicks. On top of that, Young is randomly rotated during the UCL and Nani seems to be taken off around the 60-70 mins regardless when the team is winning or losing. But Nani is 2m cheaper and I could really do with the extra money.. I guess we just need to wait and see on the weekend like you said haha

Everybody played shit against City, they may aswell field an entirely different 11 if they are basing it on the last game.
Nani is still one of the best wingers in the PL

Arsene said “He played twice for Holland and two full games for us, and had muscular tightness,” the Arsenal manager said. “It was after a medical check this morning that it was OK to put him on the bench, and there was a chance he would not have been involved at all.

'Wenger on Van Persie's display vs Stoke - "The medical team did very well to get him on the bench" tinyurl.com/63xkmm6'

It implies that he was injured and the medical team had to work hard to get him on the bench no?

It is because of the stop-start nature of the game. I believe it is caused by residues of lactic acid that certain players find very hard to dissipate. May have something to do with circulation difficulties ... :-0

Any Fulham fans about to answer why Bruan Ruiz isn’t getting any real playtime? He seemed on fire for the 30mins he got last week!

A better player to pair Zamora than Johnson or Dembele from what Ive seen.
Is he likely to start anytime soon?

Have both R a d S Taylor, Enrique, Tierney and Boyata? Would you be benching the Taylor's? Or 1 Taylor and Boyata? Or, chance of a 0-0 and play both Taylor's?

the more i think about my WC this week, the more i think i shouldnt bother messing around trying to pick the best 'mid price options' any given week (so far this season for instance i held onto O'Hara until 2 weeks ago, so missed his only points, only to switch into Petrov, who now looks dodge as Bolton struggle.)
Instead i might just cram: Kompany, Silva, Vdv, Ageuro, RvP, Rooney all in...then just rotate my favourite 2 pointers like Dyer, Moses etc

if i was on my wildcard the cheapest midfielder id have would be around 6m. with rotation the way it is this season having big hitters and a load of 2pointers wont work imo

No way. That would mean having 2 or 3 6m MFs, or a sub-5m striker. The 5th MF spot is perfect for a cheapie.Take the money and run.

I know you did well last year, so I'm curious to hear more. Care to share who your MF / attack is currently?

I did my 2 FT already and have:

            Ramsey Silva Nani VDV (B.Johnson)

            RVP Suarez Sturridge

              currently its

              vdv sess moses petrov gerrard
              rvp bent adebayor

lack of rooney meant a shocking start but slowly making up the ground

i just think with the rotation the way it is then its better to have 8 attackers that will do well (as u can see i have moses which i regret!!)

no im not now as think im setup well enough without one

definitely getting baines in for gwk12. evertons fixtures cant be ignored and the return of saha and cahill will mean alot more assists

if i was wildcarding it wouldve looked something like this

          vorm, ruddy,

baines and 4x 4m defenders (from simpson wilkinson mcauley gabbidon boyata)
          vdv sessegnon anderson larsson drenthe
          rvp rooney adebayor

i can have the majority of that without a wildcard so guna stick for now

that's what i did last year...and worked out pretty well - used both in successive weeks in Jan...but deciced to go early this year...

Im just worried that normal tactics of playing the fixtures for the lower ranked clubs is going to be harder this year, as outside the top 5/6, it looks like everyone is capable of beating everyone, home or away. Think it's going to be a pretty tight league....

I was advocating the same thing on the previous page. Having 3 mid-priced MFs leads to too much regret and tinkering (and point hits). Put the big dawgs in, and figure out the rest afterward.

Wolves might not be that much of a formality. They will have gained confidence from the fightback against swansea. Surely from past experience we know that if everyone caps VDV for a predicted goalfest, then its not going to happen..

Suarez owners... chill on the transferring out.

For those who watched Liverpool will have seen that Suarez was incredibly unlucky and on another day had 3-4 goals. He hit the post twice, had 2 other superb chances which took unfortunate deflections and his movement was spot on.

On another day he'd have cleared double figures. With his next 2 games, it's daft and too knee jerky to transfer him out.

Things is success is shortlived in FPL....FPL has a nasty habit of cutting you donw to size just when you think this game is simple.

                Super Dupa 5 + Super Pooper 1....

Why may I ask did you sell Moses with FUL/Wolves/BLACK on the horizon?

                    Compared to the Milkman:

7 ppg in last 5 games.

5 ppg for the season. Hotlips only has 2 ppg from the same team.

Did you see Krul's save this weekend vs Moses? Was worth a 1 point boner on it's own.

                    Dyer's next 3 fixtures don't look nice...

Dyer probably won't play much now that the Milkman is delivering his pints 😉

Moses has had 9 games to deliver but his sermons aren't the commandments required at this level.

                    Time to boot 😉

    All,

    Team for this GW.

    Vorm (Foster)
Bosingwa Kompany Naylor (Simpson De Laet)
Silva Arteta VDV (c) Anderson (Ferguson)
    RVP Suarez Sturridge

One FT and £1m in Bank.

    Options:

    1. Arteta > Walters
    2. Naylor > BAE
    3. Save transfer

Thinking I need to change Simpson/Naylor/De Laet in next few so 3 seems promising but 1 means I have enough cash to do Suarez to Rooney in 2 weeks.
Or should I look at doing 2 changes this week and taking the hit?

    Thanks!!!

DeLaet and Ferguson both non players at the moment, I think these should be your priority as rest and rotation could see you playing short.

Yeah got aboard the Pilk Float early, Flynny. I had 2 freebies and did a triple swoop. Decided to be a little more aggressive with my transfers this season at the right time.

Same front 3 as me and 3 of the midfield. I've gone with Walters though and benching Petrov.

WBA could be a tough nut to crack Ollie, I might captain Silva or more likely VDV (pens). Just a judgement call really, but I thought I'd put my two pen'orth in.

Both oppositions very good at home, so a tough one.

      Petrov edges it though.

With Torres back and Chelsea coming off a bad loss against a defensively poor Arsenal I don't think so.

it was said on this site that mata is similar to silva last season. VDV is proven and in form. i would take a punt on it if you need to climb your league

Taking 4 point hits is not the way to do so.
VdV is (at the moment) a clear better pick, but 4 point hits can usually be done for free a week later..giving you more points

I might even sell Mata for the Milkman this week.
