Thomas Vermaelen returns to action for Arsenal and declares himself fit for the weekend game against Chelsea. David Moyes reckons Jack Rodwell is benefitting from Mikel Arteta’s departure, while Roberto Martinez lavishes praise on one of his Wigan wingers. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Last night saw the return of Thomas Vermaelen to first-team action for the first time in two months. The Belgian played in Arsenal’s 2-1 Carling Cup win over Bolton but was withdrawn towards the end of the game and while post-match reports had earlier indicated he had to come off due to a calf problem, Vermaelen confirmed after the game to he was fine:

It was great to be back and to get time on the pitch. I felt fresh, I’m OK and am available for Saturday.

Ju-Young Park scored in only his second game for Arsenal last night as the Gunners came back from one down to send Bolton out of the cup. Arsene Wenger sang the praises of the South Korean and reckons he’s now in the mix for league action:

He showed intelligence in his link play with others, the quality of his movement was exceptional and his finishing was absolutely fantastic. He’s ready to play a league game.

Sir Alex Ferguson named a strong side for Man United’s trip to Aldershot last night. Nemanja Vidic’s return to domestic action saw him partnered with Phil Jones in the heart of the back-four, while the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia celebrated rare starts by grabbing a goal each in the 3-0 win.

With a goal and assist in the weekend game at Fulham, Jack Rodwell caught the eye. Speaking yesterday, David Moyes reckons the red card the midfielder received against Liverpool, and its subsequent withdrawal by the FA, has helped improve Rodwell’s game. Moyes also went on to admit Mikel Arteta’s move to Arsenal has had a positive impact on the player:

In a way, I think the backing he has got off everyone after the red card has actually helped him – to see everyone felt it was the right thing to do has shown him his tackle was a good tackle. He’s tackling in training and the way he’s gone about things has improved….I think Jack’s feeling as if he might have to be one of the main men since Mikel left. Before, he was always just ‘the boy’. He has to take on that mantle and he’s just beginning to look as though he might be able to carry it. He’s got the ability to score with both feet and he’s a good striker of the ball. I think he’s beginning to believe a wee bit more.

Owen Hargreaves is injured again. The midfielder is out of tonight’s Carling Cup game with Wolves and is set to miss the weekend’s league match with Mick McCarthy’s side after suffering a knock in training. Hargreaves received a kick on the calf that has prevented him from training for the last few days, though is expected to return to full training with Man City this morning. Coach David Platt described it as nothing more than a niggle.

Aston Villa have suspended Barry Bannan until further notice amid allegations of drink driving. The young Scotsman has made a strong start to the domestic campaign but a club statement announced he will be unavailable for this weekend’s trip to Sunderland. Villa received some good news yesterday, though, with Chris Herd’s red card overturned by the FA after his wrongful dismissal against West Brom last Saturday. Alan Hutton is doubtful for the weekend, however, after picking up a facial injury in the home defeat by the Baggies.

Man City finally found Carlos Tevez guilty at a disciplinary hearing yesterday, after the Argentine’s defiance at Bayern Munich a few weeks back. The bottom line, though, is that he is now available for selection to Roberto Mancini, though it’s doubtful whether the City boss will ever recall his former skipper. Tevez looks set to appeal the decision and reports even suggest he is looking to sue Mancini for defamation of character.

Roberto Martinez reckons the return to fitness of Albert Crusat will be significant to Wigan’s bid to push up the table. The winger has been blighted with an ankle injury since joining the Latics this summer but made his first start in last weekend’s narrow defeat at Newcastle. Martinez said yesterday:

The way Albert plays, the explosive pace he has and the impact he can make, can really kick-start our season. It was great to see him involved at Newcastle and I thought he looked very sharp. As you saw, Albert is a player who will flourish in the Premier League, someone who’ll give us a lot of options in attack. We have to be patient with him while he finds his feet, but, once he does that properly, he’ll be worth the wait.

Newcastle suffered an injury blow yesterday with the announcement that Cheik Tiote is a doubt for Monday night’s trip to Stoke due to a knee problem. The Ivorian has been an ever-present in Alan Pardew’s midfield this season and has been instrumental in their unbeaten start to the campaign. Steven Taylor has a broken nose but is likely to play, though should miss tonight’s Carling Cup match with Blackburn.

Tony Pulis received some good news on the defensive front yesterday. Jonathan Woodgate has missed the last three Stoke games due to a calf problem but could feature in tonight’s Carling Cup clash with Liverpool.

I am strong believer that FPL is more skill than luck over the course of the season (see McGurn's history, for instance). However, we're a quarter of the way through and no.1 has Kirkland and Frimpong...

Similarly, I note that my second team, on which I take more quick-fire reactive decisions based on trying something different to my first, is far out scoring my first team.

It's must be one of those 'I maybe lucky, but it's funny how my luck improves with the more research I do' type things. 🙂

      It's like Poker.

You can do well over the short term and even have a good run of luck, but over 3-4 seasons skill wins the day.

Over 1 season luck could be the difference between 50,000+ places.

Yeah, and FPL requires the same mentality that you need for golf too. You can knock the ball perfectly straight down the fairway and watch it hit an unexpected divot, while your opponent mishits a chip which then flies straight into the hole. The good golf pros just take it on the chin, acknowledge their opponent and concentrate on the next hole. The weaker players lose their temper, change their swing entirely (= taking massive points hits in FPL!) and slide down the leader board.

That said, I'm doing so badly this year that, if this was golf, the FPL would revoke my Tour card...

I think this season has thrown up more off-the-wall results than usual. Plus the game has been harder to exploit- no double gameweeks, much more efficient pricing including more volatile price changes.

It says a lot when you look at how many teams in the top 100k have Ferguson in midfield!

Exactly. Double gameweeks immediately give the managers who pay attention a massive advantage to those who don't.

There have occasionally been some gameweeks when not all teams have played- like gw2 a couple of years ago, they have a similar effect to double gameweeks.

As long as you have fairly certain starters, there's no harm in having Ferguson. I don't get why everyone has an issue with him, given that £0.5m can actually earn you more points elsewhere.

Totally agree. 9 GW's in and yet to have needed Ferguson to play. With a big front 7 around him, I wouldn't have played Tiote or Dyer if they had a good fixture. That 0.5m is useful and to be honest at an early stage (before Dyer looked promising) the next higher priced viable option would have just weakened elsewhere.

You need to bench 3 players and it's one less headache to worry about. Even then I ended up with Brown (9pts) as 1st sub. This post will probably now bite me but I may get caught out twice in the season and the alternative may have scored 2pts twice, the equivalent of one points hit spread over a season.

Around the 9k mark overall if that is of any relevance/interest,

"The Ferguson tactic" is sound IMO (if you pay attention to team news and it doesn't snow)

the .5+ was very useful to have for me

There's also something in the fact that if you play 3-4-3 (as I often have) ur sub mid cant come in for a defensive injury (it's a minor point but it seems to add up)

Remember last season? The leader for a good few weeks was a person who hadn't changed their team since the beginning. Then someone must have informed him that he was number 1, he started making changes and then swiftly fell down the order. I don't know where I was going with this but let that be a lesson to you all.

S TAYLOR - ENRIQUE - DE LAET - KOMPANY (WARD)

BALE - SILVA - PETROV - DYER (MOSES)

    RVP - AGUERO - SUAREZ

Boring i know...but need a keeper to partner 4m man Ruddy for my WC team...
given im going to have 2xStoke defence, 1xSwans defender, 1 x Newc defender...then can you help decide between:

Mignolet (AVL, mun, FUL, WIG, wol, BLA)
    or
Al-Habsi (FUL, wol, BLA, sun, ARS, wba)

Stat wise so far, Al Hab on 33 saves, Mignolet on 27. Points difference is pretty much down to 2xpenalty saves from Al Hab.....
    Thanks

To go with Ruddy, it looks like you need a keeper with good fixtures in GWs 11(maybe), 12 and 14. Mignolet's GW11 looks dodgy (mun) [but you could maybe stick with Ruddy away to Villa], while Habsi's GW14 is tricky (ARS).

I'd say Mignolet has a very slight edge.

It feels a bit wrong but yeah I'm considering it. Essentially, this is how I feel you can squeeze most value out of the game by using your transfers to make sure you have good captain choices every week.
Gonna wait til Friday or Saturday morning cos some people saying Kun could be rotated, so we'll see what happens.

Yeah I agree about captain choices, I have taken out Nani for Gerrard and Modric for VDV the last 2 weeks and captained them and went from over 1 million to inside 500 thousand rank. I think he will play Aguero, he looks like he wants to and is capable of playing every game and City won't want to slip up against Wolves after last weeks result.

Aguero may be a gamble, but one should take in to account that his absence/bit part play has as much to do with his recent injury as player rotation (the Villa game for example). It’s a gamble for sure, but I am taking the punt that he is back to full fitness and will play this weekend. If he doesn’t then I’ve got a strategy to get RVP back in over the next 2 weeks.

Honka -1 @ 10/11 and -2 @ 23/10. They are in brilliant form and pushing for the Europa League spot with 2 games left, they have been consistently beating the handicap against poor opponents lately and they are at home to Jaro tonight who can't be relegated and play very open football so I think Honka will take em to the cleaners. Hibs are 6/4 +1, you think they will get a result?

Honka, they're that Finnish team 😛 I don't have too much money at present to be betting with but i'll watch the score avidly.

I think it will be a draw in 90 mins, so +1 is a decent bet +2 is 13/20 which is obviously safer.

Newcastle have tough games coming up so would be tempted to get rid of Simpson but with only 4.3 or 4.4 to play with that could be difficult! you've gone a but nuts with Rooney & RVP which is taking up a lot of value. Aguero for 1 week would make sense to me.

No Stoke defence could also hurt you. updgrade Given to Begovic or change Bosingwa to Shawcross.

Think it's time to let go of Bosingwa, Chelsea just aren't delivering at the back and his returns are erratic. Downgrade him to an absolute cheapo (Wilkinson 4.0) and use the money to upgrade your mid. Not too keen on actually playing Dyer as opposed to benching him.

Forwards look good and are guaranteed to start, wish I could find a way to afford Rooney/RVP now.

Smalling is an iffy choice because United defence is leaky and he's not customarily in the attacking points (on the end of set pieces occasionally I guess). If you are gonna go United defence try Jones instead as he gets forward like a midfielder, maybe that's partly why they let them in lol! Rotation for both is slgiht worry.

      Nasri > Silva

Suarez really isn't converting his chances, he's not lethal enough and there's only 2 decent GWs coming up. Try Aguero if you can.

Very nice. I think getting rid of Agbonlahor for the long term is a wise move. I'm not sold on Graham though, I fancy Bendtner as my 3rd striker for the next 8 or 9. RE: Silva i posted yesterday about my concerns for citys fixtures, I'm WC'n in a couple of weeks, I havbe Silva (bought at 9.7) and I'm considering getting shot of him. I see both sides of the arguement, but right now i'm on the fence when it comes to our little spanish friend.

Hmmm, I really don't know. I wouldn't like to say leave him, and he plays 60 mins in each and gets 10 points every game, but conversely I wouldn't be comfortable saying get him and he plays 60 mins in each and gets 2 points when others are scoring highly. I think it's all down to personal preference. On my WC im 65% sure he wont be there, if that helps at all.

Yeah if you are building a two-up-front team, your mid needs to be powered and I can only see two powered mids there. Expensive defenders really aren't working this year, if you ditch megabucks Baines for a cheapie you can upgrade both Johnson and Anderson..

From what I've seen of Bolton's matches he seems to run the show for them, if anyone will get points for Bolton it's him. (It was Sturridge last year actually...) I'm not a member so don't see the stats so that is all I can say. Are the stats good for Sturridge?

No. Walker is, at the end of the day, a defender who will never keep clean sheets. Modric has never been a fantasy point scorer.

I know ya, generally hes not a high point fantasy scorer but from time to time he does contribute assists and gets in the odd goal. Plus (in my case anyhow) it could mean keeping hold of Nani... Il probably be doing the VDV >> Nani anyhow cos if VDV has another big GW, would be a big hit in mini leagues with everyone gonna have him.. But Modric could still be a vg differential especially with Spurs fixtures

Time to ship Klasnic I think ... that's 1 expensive midfield too.

I'd probably break it down - you might want Rooney/Aguero next week? How about a plan to get Rooney/Aguero in for Klasnic next week by getting rid of Nasri (For Pilkington?) and Woodgate for Barnett?

So Woodgate to Barnett this week, then a double transfer next week? Does that work - haven't added it up properly but it can't be too far off.

I'm .2 million short for that, plus it would leave me with three Norwich players... Was thinking RVP > Aguero this week? Probably get rid of Gerrard after Swansea game too then could upgrade Klasnic.

Hmmm .... point taken about Norwich.

I'd keep RVP - you'll want him vs West Brom the week after and Aguero isn't guaranteed a start.

          Taylor --> Shawcross?
          Woogdate --> Wilkinson?

Both defensive transfers to consider in my opinion.

I'd probably work out who you want to have in 3 weeks and get there with no more than 2 transfers each week.
