Thomas Vermaelen returns to action for Arsenal and declares himself fit for the weekend game against Chelsea. David Moyes reckons Jack Rodwell is benefitting from Mikel Arteta’s departure, while Roberto Martinez lavishes praise on one of his Wigan wingers. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Last night saw the return of Thomas Vermaelen to first-team action for the first time in two months. The Belgian played in Arsenal’s 2-1 Carling Cup win over Bolton but was withdrawn towards the end of the game and while post-match reports had earlier indicated he had to come off due to a calf problem, Vermaelen confirmed after the game to he was fine:

It was great to be back and to get time on the pitch. I felt fresh, I’m OK and am available for Saturday.

Ju-Young Park scored in only his second game for Arsenal last night as the Gunners came back from one down to send Bolton out of the cup. Arsene Wenger sang the praises of the South Korean and reckons he’s now in the mix for league action:

He showed intelligence in his link play with others, the quality of his movement was exceptional and his finishing was absolutely fantastic. He’s ready to play a league game.

Sir Alex Ferguson named a strong side for Man United’s trip to Aldershot last night. Nemanja Vidic’s return to domestic action saw him partnered with Phil Jones in the heart of the back-four, while the likes of Dimitar Berbatov and Antonio Valencia celebrated rare starts by grabbing a goal each in the 3-0 win.

With a goal and assist in the weekend game at Fulham, Jack Rodwell caught the eye. Speaking yesterday, David Moyes reckons the red card the midfielder received against Liverpool, and its subsequent withdrawal by the FA, has helped improve Rodwell’s game. Moyes also went on to admit Mikel Arteta’s move to Arsenal has had a positive impact on the player:

In a way, I think the backing he has got off everyone after the red card has actually helped him – to see everyone felt it was the right thing to do has shown him his tackle was a good tackle. He’s tackling in training and the way he’s gone about things has improved….I think Jack’s feeling as if he might have to be one of the main men since Mikel left. Before, he was always just ‘the boy’. He has to take on that mantle and he’s just beginning to look as though he might be able to carry it. He’s got the ability to score with both feet and he’s a good striker of the ball. I think he’s beginning to believe a wee bit more.

Owen Hargreaves is injured again. The midfielder is out of tonight’s Carling Cup game with Wolves and is set to miss the weekend’s league match with Mick McCarthy’s side after suffering a knock in training. Hargreaves received a kick on the calf that has prevented him from training for the last few days, though is expected to return to full training with Man City this morning. Coach David Platt described it as nothing more than a niggle.

Aston Villa have suspended Barry Bannan until further notice amid allegations of drink driving. The young Scotsman has made a strong start to the domestic campaign but a club statement announced he will be unavailable for this weekend’s trip to Sunderland. Villa received some good news yesterday, though, with Chris Herd’s red card overturned by the FA after his wrongful dismissal against West Brom last Saturday. Alan Hutton is doubtful for the weekend, however, after picking up a facial injury in the home defeat by the Baggies.

Man City finally found Carlos Tevez guilty at a disciplinary hearing yesterday, after the Argentine’s defiance at Bayern Munich a few weeks back. The bottom line, though, is that he is now available for selection to Roberto Mancini, though it’s doubtful whether the City boss will ever recall his former skipper. Tevez looks set to appeal the decision and reports even suggest he is looking to sue Mancini for defamation of character.

Roberto Martinez reckons the return to fitness of Albert Crusat will be significant to Wigan’s bid to push up the table. The winger has been blighted with an ankle injury since joining the Latics this summer but made his first start in last weekend’s narrow defeat at Newcastle. Martinez said yesterday:

The way Albert plays, the explosive pace he has and the impact he can make, can really kick-start our season. It was great to see him involved at Newcastle and I thought he looked very sharp. As you saw, Albert is a player who will flourish in the Premier League, someone who’ll give us a lot of options in attack. We have to be patient with him while he finds his feet, but, once he does that properly, he’ll be worth the wait.

Newcastle suffered an injury blow yesterday with the announcement that Cheik Tiote is a doubt for Monday night’s trip to Stoke due to a knee problem. The Ivorian has been an ever-present in Alan Pardew’s midfield this season and has been instrumental in their unbeaten start to the campaign. Steven Taylor has a broken nose but is likely to play, though should miss tonight’s Carling Cup match with Blackburn.

Tony Pulis received some good news on the defensive front yesterday. Jonathan Woodgate has missed the last three Stoke games due to a calf problem but could feature in tonight’s Carling Cup clash with Liverpool.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Given
    Walker Brown Simpson
    Silva VDV Young Dyer
    Rooney Aguero Adebayor

really want RVP in place of ade but means i will have to lose young
is it worth it since i have rooney cover?
also want a stoke defender so should i get begovic for given or wilinson for simpson?

Definitely not worth it this week - kepe Adebayor, you can get RVP next week.

Wilkinson for Simpson is probably a better transfer than Begovic for Given imo

Bit of a quandary as to who to bench.

Got Vorm as keeper. Should I double up on Swansea defence with Naylor, or start Simpson away to Stoke?
Secondly, play Dyer at home against Bolton or Ramsey away against Chelsea?

Got RVP as Arsenal coverage but Ramsey's been playing well lately, whereas Dyer hasn't really been delivering but is playing Bolton at home...

Ok, so my team is as follows

    Vorm

    De Laet, Kompany, Simpson
Ramsey, Silva (v), Mata, VdV (c)
    Aguero, Sturridge, Adebayor

    Krul, Petrov, Ward, Bosingwa

I'm looking to get rid of De Laet as I don't really want a bench warmer & I've got 1.5m sitting there doing nothing. Question is, do I go for Shawcross or Walker?

You really don't need to wildcard that team.

      If you want VDV:

      Nani --> VDV 4 pts

A wildcard is worth more than 4 pts

I have both. Aguero is more prone to rotation. RVP is essential to Arsenal's attacks and he's on free kicks and pens, I'd say its about even because Arsenal are not as good as Man City. RVP, imo, will score consistently while Aguero may well get his goals in bursts. I cant split them really, either can score against anyone. I wouldn't recommend taking a hit to make a sideways move.

I don't think Silva is much of a risk at all, same for Aguero.

Neither will play tonight and so will have had a whole weeks rest. That is enough for a professional footballer this early in the season. Especially Aguero - he's barely played lately.

I'm considering taking a hit to bring in Aguero for Suarez (despite everyone here thinking it's a bad move)

Too risky, out of all players to fathom that Mankini would play at El Madrigal...wouldn't you think it would be Kun, this match is sort of a big deal. Given the risk it would be a sideways move at best.

This true, Luis S, if stating the obvious. But even Silva must be 'rested' at some point, and given available information, this GW looks a sensible time to expect it. But I don't believe many, if any, will be selling, merely facing a game without before he bounces back into the side.

If Mancini plays him, he plays him.

    need some help here
this is what my team looks like
    begovic, krul
    shawX, enrique, kompany, gabbidon, Naylor
    silva, gerrard, ramsey, fox, cabaye
    suarez, rooney, sturr

my question is who to drop and (C) for this upcoming gameweek
i certainly will drop krul, cabaye, gabbidon, ?????
i'm thinking about dropping enrique but then the last time i drop him he got 11 points so i'm kind of hestitate to do it. Naylor always get Cleanie at home, norwich will probably score 2 goals or more with BR. Fox is on set piece so i think he has good chance for assist

as for the (c) my first thought is silva but then he might be drop and give me an EPIC 1 pointer
what do you people think about sturridge or shawX as captian

ok, FT transfer used to get VDV in at beginning of week but not sure I have enough City coverage ( only Silva and worried he may start on bench ) pretty convinced Aguero will not start due to CL mid week and very tempted to take a punt ( and 4 point hit ) on Sturridge to Balo - genius or madness?!

I think you have answered your own question in a way, you have Silva, who I think will play, but we don't know if he will, where you have rightly or wrongly predicted Aguero on the bench at the weekend, the kernel here is that we don't know who will play, for a 4 point hit, or a punt, it's simply not worth it in my view.

If I had Sturridge, I would hold on, he was a victim of circumstance on Sunday, he should generally play.

GW13 will NOT be a DGW even if Everton lose their Carling Cup match tonight, because Spurs have a Europa League match that week.

Carling Cup 5th round is to be played in the week commencing 28Nov, which is in GW13.
GW14 is 3-9Dec and is a Champions League week, so it can't be then either (because TV rules mean that no other matches can be played on the Tuesday or Wednesday).

Playing on Thursday and again at the weekend is something that all teams try to avoid (unless they're in the Europa League and don't have a choice).
GW20 is the only possibility before the January wildcard, but there should be other opportunities later.

    3.6 in bank

Next week I am looking to change it around and do one of the following changes? I cant decide which one:

    Given–>Begovic or Krul/Mignolet
    Bos—>Shawcross
    De Laet–>Wilkinson or Boyata
    Bos–>Jones
    Bos–>Walker or BAE

I was looking at doing the 2nd option. I have rooney so I am tempted to take Ramsey as I have no Arsenal players.

The first option is also appealing but I dont see value in Mata/Nasri so I could do Cabaye+De Leat--> Ramsey and Shawcross. Any maybe Bos to Walker later if chelsea are not keeping CS.

    Mignolet

    Baines N Taylor Barnett

Nani VDV (VC) Pilkington Nasri (C)

    RVP Sturridge Adebayor

    Subs Ruddy Brunt Simpson Boyata

      Yes they will.

First seeds will likely be Poland Ukraine, Spain, Netherlands.
Second seeds as it stands - Germany, Italy, England, Russia

The third and fourth seeds are yet to decided. All of the countries in the play offs have a worse coefficent than Russia so Portugal et al are unlikely to be in 2nd seeds.

Cheers. Ridiculous two teams hosting a tournament half the size of the World Cup I think. Imagine Ireland qualified for a major tournament for the first time in ten years and get both Spain and Germany in the group! Suppose it also means 50% chance of getting an average team as first seeds.

If the top 4 seeds in the play offs qualify then the 4th seeds will be Czech Republic, Ireland, France and Portugal (their coeff is just lower than Denmark so that could change).

Thus Ireland's nightmare group could be Spain, Germany, Croatia and Ireland.

A group of Spain, England, Croatia and France is also possible.

N.B. The coeffecients can change as they will fixed after next round of friendlies and play off.
