Our Watchlist rankings have recently been updated and are available for your consideration in the sidebar. Read on for details of this week’s talking points, as Steve Bruce’s Sunderland emerge as an unlikely source of talent at both ends of the park…

Michel Vorm’s Anfield heroics see him restored to top spot in our goalkeeper rankings. While Man United visit the Liberty Stadium in gameweek 12, that’s the first of three home games in four for the Swans, with Villa and Fulham surrounding an away trip to Ewood Park. Still available for 4.5 and 10 points ahead of Pepe Reina at the top of the FPL scoring charts, the Dutchman remains strong value and is surely set to build on his 23% ownership over the international break.

While Swansea’s back four- having conceded just a single goal at home- continue to offer value, the Sunderland defence also has fixtures to make them an intriguing option. Kieren Westwood comes into our thinking now. With Simon Mignolet facing a lengthy spell out with a damaged eye socket, the former Coventry stopper will be between the sticks for three home encounters in four. The Black Cats provided a stubborn obstacle for United at Old Trafford and, with John O’Shea potentially returning to bolster Steve Bruce’s rearguard, the chances of a couple of clean sheets in the next month look good. Certainly at 4.4, Westwood offers value to rival Vorm.

Sunderland’s potential is represented by Wes Brown within our defender rankings – the former United man takes his place in our top five, sitting under Stoke’s Andy Wilkinson, with Arsenal’s Thomas Vermaelen and Leighton Baines of Everton. That pairing come from nowhere to top our rankings, with strong fixtures and a substantial attacking threat in their locker.

Vermaelen demonstrated his worth in the 3-0 win over West Brom at the weekend and, having netted 7 goals in the 2009/10 season, has the pedigree to notch strong returns now he’s back and available to Arsene Wenger.

As for Baines, his attacking threat is undoubted – both in terms of his supply of crosses from the left-flank and his quality at dead-ball situations. The emergence of Royston Drenthe may have reduced Baines’ influence from set-plays but he still remains the top attacking Fantasy defender. With four very strong home encounters to come in the next six Gameweeks, you have to feel that, if Baines is going to deliver this season, this forthcoming window could well be his time to shine.

The big movers in our midfield rankings are somewhat predictable. Bolton’s Chris Eagles has attracted big investment following his two-goal haul against Stoke at the weekend. Lower down the rankings, mid-price prospects Stephane Sessegnon and Anthony Pilkington also enjoy boosts following recent form, as does Joe Allen in the budget bracket.

We have Allen’s team-mate Scott Sinclair ranked above him and in our top five; with three home games in four and consecutive goals in his last three Liberty Stadium matches, we fancy Sinclair to go on delivering. Just below him, the aforementioned Royston Drenthe is an interesting differential, with just 1% ownership and the fixtures to bring the best out of his explosive talent.

The form of both Mikel Arteta and Frank Lampard is hard to ignore, despite their price tags, and while Aaron Ramsey is kept just outside our top five, he will surely prosper from Arsenal’s continued run of kind opponents going into December. It’s no surprise to see David Silva and Rafael Van der Vaart hold the top two spots.

Similarly, Robin Van Persie looks a permanent fixture on top of our forward rankings right now. With 10 goals in his last 6 gameweeks, there’s been no sign of the Dutchman letting up and, with strong fixtures in front of him, it could take an injury to derail the Arsenal skipper.

Van Persie’s rivals are struggling right now. Sergio Aguero has just a single goal and assist in his last five appearances for Man City, with team-mate Edin Dzeko now jumping above him in the FPL scoring charts. The Bosnian has two competitive matches before gameweek 12, keeping him below the Argentine in our rankings for now.

Wayne Rooney’s decline has been well documented on these pages and his potential remains limited by a new short-term role in the United midfield. Rooney may return to the forward line at Swansea but, even so, that’s a fixture that will prove tricky for a United side struggling for attacking fluency. Javier Hernandez is placed higher in our reckoning right now and, at 10.0 in the FPL, offers coverage in Sir Alex Ferguson’s lineup for those looking to invest in United’s favourable run of opponents.

Again, it’s Sunderland that provide perhaps the most interesting twist on things here. Nicklas Bendtner is widely criticised and has done little to justify his inflated self-belief. Even so, 3 assists, 2 goals and 5 bonus points has seen him make a decent start at the Stadium of Light and, with beatable opposition in front of him over the next four, he looks set to add to that tally.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Yes, but that was not a surprise. Van der Sar was also rested for 5 games last season, so probably De Gea will sit out 2-3 more. But also Vidic and Evra will get rotated if the squad is fully fit IMO.

For the next few weeks, I feel Jones will be more nailed on too. SAF needs to keep a regular same back 4 to create a better defence, think he has seen that recently.

I think this could be just my paranoia, but Jones was never supposed to play more than a few games. Soon Rafael and Smalling will be fit and Jones will see some bench time. Personally I think he is one of the main defenders at fault for the lack of clean sheets. He is a good defender, but lacks discipline, he gets forward a lot and leaves the team exposed at the back.

No way, if anything Rafael especially leaves ManU open to attack much more then Jones ever does, and why would SAF pay nearly 20 million for Jones and not use him? That doesn't show good on SAF, and I think the fans would be upset he isn't using the money he has spent.

Jones has put in plenty of brilliant tackles and with Vidic back you will see his 'discipline' improve, but i think it has been fine in the first place. He goes forward when necessary, but knows his place is in defence and makes sure he is always in a position to get back straight away.

    off topic gents...

in fifa 12, how are you ever going to be able to defend against the quicker teams such as real madrid and barcelona if you feel the challenge would be greater to play a team like liverpool? 🙂

or i might just suck at it...

Try following the player that your opponent is most likely to pass it to with the player you control, and hit the button the make the computer controlled player pressure your opponent's player with the ball. I haven't played Fifa in ages, but I was pretty good at it when I did play.

Follow real life, play deeper, play more defenders, sweeper? two defensive midfielders to clog the middle and force them wide, play your fastest full backs even playing wingers in that position, play counter attack with one fast striker and hit them on the break.

Is it worth getting a first choice gk then having lindegaard as second choice? Play lidegaard first choice every week. when he plays you've got a man u gk for cheap. When he doesn't you have your first choice gk. obv for man u chelsea you would drop linde just in case he played.

yeah, but if you failed to get someone like vorm or krul early on they're actually quite expensive now. wouldn't be a great idea but if your choosing hart it might be a good idea. will only work a few times a season. maybe de gea and linde? then you don't have to worry about it. I still prefer rotating two cheapies and have vorm but if i was wildcarding and looking for a cheapy...

just throwing an idea out there. someone in my league always picks a goalkeeper and then their teams second choice. It's not a great strategy because you don't get to rotate fixtures but he never spends transfers on his goalkeepers all year and doesn't have to worry about them. I think it would be a good strategy for beginners who won't look at their teams very often and don't look into fixtures too much.

Cant have Graham as I already have 3 Swansea and am not persuaded by the Bendtner love on here. I'lll get 7.0m for Agbonlahor at the moment and have 0.5m in the bank with 1 FT

    Any other suggestions?

Sigh...I have another boring WC question for you guys... Looking for 3 mid-priced midfielders with 16.8 to spend

Drenthe, Sess and Allen are my choice right now.

Walters is tickling my spider senses in a big way, coz of PKs, Sinclair too. Brunt doesn't have the strikers to assist ATM. MPetrov? Larsson? O'Hara? Eagles? Dyer?

It's funny because not so long ago there seemed to be no decent options in the mid price MF slot. Now we're spoiled for choice.

or stick with the 3 I have. Thanks as ever

walters is a must for me but the team is tired. 2 week break should help but pulis might look to shuffle things up. Walters has been up front but there's always a chance he could change his mind. O'hara is showing good form playing off the front. always dangerous. Lots of people like drenthe, good fixtures but everton are playing badly and i'm not convinced about his end product. on set pieces i think though.

If walters plays in the two Ireland games he might be rested...
I had Sinclair and Walters since the start rotating them with other players is working well so far.
In fact I would say Sinclair and Walters have probably saved my fpl season from been a complete flop.

Ha that's the Gaeilge for ya....suppose it literally means darkblue.
I wouldn't be fluent by any means can speak the basic stuff in emergencies haha.
Kinda at the stage where I could understand more then I could speak.
i haven't a notion why they don't make all schools at primary and playschool all-irish speaking then problem solved.
The Welsh manage to speak their language more and they don't even have the sea between them and England!

Go for Hutton > McCauley. Your midfield looks good for this week so it is not necessary to sell Petrov and take a 4 hit. Sell him next week and get Drenthe or Larrson/Sessegnon.

Petrov = dead wood, I haven't had a chance to get rid of him for 4 weeks now and his price went down. I was busy strengthening big hitting players who thankfully have made a difference. Can't wait to get rid of him at the right moment but won't take a hit.

    Team for week 12:

    Al Habsi (Vorm)
Jones, Ekotto, Brown, Shawcross (Enrique 2nd sub)
VDV, Lampard, Ramsey, Walters (Petrov 3rd sub)
    RVP, Adebayor (Agbonlahor 1st sub)

Should I play Vorm or Al Habsi, should I play Agbonlahor not so good in away games instead of who in defense?

    Future transfers:
wk 14 Petrov > Drenthe and Shawcross > Gabbidon
    wk 15 Agbonlahor > Ba
wk 16 Al Habsi > Krul
    wk 17 Adebayor > Dzeko

That's a tough one, Nani (rotation risk), Rooney (playing on midfield for now), Hernandez (has not hit his stride yet), Welbeck (mmm not a big hitter), the rest of attacking options are not dependable... I have Jones on defense and hope he does not get rotated.

Anyone considered Alex as a differential at the back for 5.6 - could now have a run of games?

Also, anyone know the Argentina games as thinking of bringing in Aguero for Saurez

I don't know about Alex, he could be rotated. Aguero will definitely play for Argentina, they have 2 games Argentina - Bolivia and Colombia - Argentina. South American qualifiers are up in the air right now so there are no easy games. Argentina lost against Venezuela 1 - 0 last qualifier so I don't think they will take any risks against Colombia specially. Argentina usually play Messi behind 2 strikers and those 2 are if fit in most cases Higuain and Aguero.

Yeah, sorry bout that. I guess the obvious strategy if you wanted to get in players for the Spurs - Everton game would be to get them in during the preceding weeks (with hits if necessary) and then use the wc to lose the ones you don't want afterwards.

    worn | begovic

    any obvious weaknesses?

double on the swansea and stoke interesting. I would consider Brown in place of Rangel as Sunderland have a good run.

Perhaps Lamps--->Mata will allow more money on an upgrade of Sturridge in future. Despite so much money in mid through Lampard, VDV and Silva the rest of the team is very nicely balanced - well done, v good team IMO.

City heavy is not a bad thing.

For united cover best option is Kompany-->Jones (I wouldnt do that myself). Or Lamps to Nani. Or Lamps to Mata and Dzeko to Hernandez if that works moneywise?

VDV, Lampard, Ramsey, Walters (Petrov 3rd sub)
    RVP, Adebayor (Agbonlahor 1st sub)

Should I play Vorm or Al Habsi, should I play Agbonlahor not so good in away games instead of who in defense?

Both teams wont keep a CS IMO - toss up.

That can be problem with many good defenders - picking a bench. If you wish to Gabby I would ahead of Shawcross (injury doubt).

Only other suggestion - downgrade one of BAE/Shawcross to change Petrov to >6M mid as he seems out of favour.

True, for the price not too bad but it is hard to overlook Agb's and Ba's form at the moment for Benditwide. I want to take the risk but still not convinced...I would even go for Klasnic instead.

short term deff worth the risk due to upcoming fixtures whereas the others mentioned (klasnic, ba & Agb) have difficult games. Saha and Bendy have a nice run short term. 4-5 games

True for short term but still they are in great form, I would go for Benditwide instead of Saha though. Look at it this way if Benditwide is going to have any consistency it has to be in the next 4 games, I would expect atleast 3 goals and an assist from him. If he doesn't do that now then I don't know when
