Having announced his return from injury with “that” goal against West Brom in gameweek eleven, Thomas Vermaelen leaps into our newly-updated Watchlist rankings. With a favourable run of fixtures on the horizon for the foreseeable future, the Belgian seems poised for investment as the new-look Arsenal begin to click into place.

Absent for two months with an ankle problem, Vermaelen’s return to the Gunners back-four saw Arsene Wenger’s side record back-to-back clean sheets at the Emirates a fortnight ago. A goalless draw with Marseille in the Champions League was followed by a 3-0 canter over the Baggies, with Arsenal hinting at the “maturity” Arsene Wenger recently spoke of. Vermaelen’s first start since gameweek two coincided with Arsenal’s first clean sheet in the league since gameweek six and saw him return a 15 point haul for his Fantasy owners, with 3 bonus points also picked up for his display at both ends of the pitch.

Despite a wealth of centre-halves to choose from, Wenger tends to favour the Belgian when fit. Vermaelen is far more than just a conventional defender- though an Achilles injury blighted his appearances last term, he grabbed 7 goals in his debut campaign for Arsenal back in 2009/10 and has taken little time to serve a reminder of his attacking sensibilities.

A partnership with Per Mertesacker could flourish at the heart of the back-four, though the likes of Laurent Koscielny will also come into the equation, with Johan Djourou and Sebastien Squillaci set to stay peripheral figures, perhaps only called upon when injuries deprive Wenger of first-choice options.

The loss of Cesc Fabregas is now behind them and with five wins in the last six league games, it’s clear the new summer signings are starting to gel. A look at the upcoming schedule (nor, FUL, wig, EVE, mci, avl, WOL, QPR) only offers more promise of Fantasy returns and with just one of the next eight fixtures posing any major difficulty, the 6.7 priced Vermaelen could provide a timely boost for any potential backers.

    Assuming that VdV will play and there's no need to sell, would you rather:

    Bosingwa -> BAE
    Cabaye -> Walters/Sessegnon for 4 points?

    or

    Bosingwa -> Brown
    Cabaye -> Silva
    Suarez -> Bendtner for 8 points?

    Struggling to pick the two players to replace Metrov and Agbonlahor in my team (2 free transfers)

    I have 0.8 in the bank, leaving me with 13.3 for the pair.

    The following players fit nicely into my team for the next 6 weeks.

    Which 2 to pick...?

    Midfielder:

    a) Sessegnon
    b) Drenthe
    c) Rodwell
    d) Formica
    e) Eagles

    Forward:

      Westwood may slightly outscore Vorm but you're probably just costing yourself a transfer later by picking Westwood so choose Vorm.

      1.Vorm more nailed on and his next 6 are MU(H) AV(H) BLA(A) FUL(H) NEW(A) EVE(A).
      Westwood rotation risk and his next 6 are FUL(H) WIG(H) WOL(A) BLA(H) TOT(A) QPR(A)

      2.Kompany more nailed on but Jones offers better fixtures and a slight attacking threat.

      cheers lads, think Vorm just clips it over all then, have had sights set on westwood for over a week but Vorm clinches it ideally, him it is then.

      Hmm i would like to go Jones but there is the threat of rotation there, i would really like to get vermaelen in there but would have to sacrifice an 8pt hit to do so, best off waiting till next week for when i get rid of torres to free up funds i think. cheers fellas.

    So played the wildcard. What do you think of this:

    Vorm
    Howard

    Kompany
    Vermaelen
    Vidic
    W. Brown
    Simpson

    Silva
    Bale
    Sessegnon
    Walters
    Rodwell

    RVP
    Dzeko
    Hoilett

    0.4 in the bank. My only explanation will be regarding the choice of keepers: They alternate home/away for at least the holiday period, and Howard's fixtures look like a cake-walk.

        Hoilett's definitely the weakest link. I've also considered Sturridge and Welbeck there. Are either of those options viable?

          • 14 Years

          Sure they're viable. I think Sturridge is more likely to come good points wise. The thing about Hoilet is that even if he scores, Blackburn will probably end up getting beat which significantly reduces your chance of bonus. A goalscoring striker in a winning team will probably get 8 or 9 points. A goalscoring Hoilet will probably get you 6,

      Buddy you are wasting far to much of your budget in your defence, you only have three captain shouts there, RVP, SIlva and maybe dzeko. downgrade Vidic to Jones, and swap Kompany or Vermaelan to a reliable cheaper option like Gabbidon, Hibbert, Wilkinson even Assou ekotto and use the rest of the cash on improving your attack.

        Fair enough. But what attackers are really worth the investment right now? Rooney? Nani? Lampard? VDV had a few good weeks, but I think that ship may have sailed for the moment. I'm just struggling to find value in the high dollar attackers.

    Given - Vorm

    Kompany - Jose Enrique - Ward - Brown - N Taylor

    VDV - Silva - Cabaye - Moses - Ramsey

    RVP - Suarez - Sturridge

    2 free transfers, 1.5 million in bank and no notion of getting rid of Moses until after this gameweek.

    Keeping that in mind, I'd love to hear any opinions 🙂

        hmmm that is tempting, but I think I'll stick with Given for a while because I need to use every free transfer on upgrading a midfield and forward line who I don't think are good enough for the next few weeks

          Fair enough, I'd at least switch him to Westwood (not sure about how he rotates with Vorm) or Krul or Kenny as Villa don't have a decent home game for ages now. Just gonna rot on your bench.

    Would allow me then to get Kompany in for de laet, whereas if i chose Vorm i would have to get Jones, in fact would you choose jones over kompany anyway?

      Sunderland have decent fixtures coming up, Mignolet is out for a couple of months and according to some reliable posters on here Gordon won't be back anytime soon, whatever it might say on FPL.

      If Jones was nailed on I'd say get him, but he'll get rotated a bit so Kompany is the safe choice.

        cheers, yeah its just sunderlands fixtures that entice me more, even though Westwood has 5 home games to Vorm's 6 until january wildcard, plus i think he's an excellent shot stopper and good goalkeeper all round, only have to see his performance at united to realise that, and i dont think im reading too much into that either, he could be the huge difference sunderland have been waiting for in terms of keeping clean sheets.

        Yeah I would rather get Kompany, would have no united cover but im bringing hernandez in for torres next GW so not too bad, im going westwood then, thanks man.

    I have 0.8 in the bank, leaving me with 13.3 for the pair.

    The following players fit nicely into my team for the next 6 weeks.

    Which 2 to pick…?

    Midfielder:

    b) Drenthe
    c) Rodwell

    If money was not an option would you:

    - Play Vorm every week and do Given to Ruddy to spend cash elsewhere

    OR

    - Given to Westwood to rotate with Vorm

    Rotating Vorm and Given hasn't worked me as I have benched all of Vorm's clean sheets. What would you do?

    The rest of Team is (am getting Drenthe this week):
    Given Vorm
    Kompany BAE Enrique Simpson De Laet
    Dyer Silva VDV Walters Cabaye
    Rooney RVP Sturridge
