[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

I never understood why a professional athlete can’t cope with playing more than one game of football in a week. I used to play for four hours every night then jog home. Down the park, jumpers for goalposts, isn’t it? Marvellous.

Talk of rest, rotation and jetlag has been rife this week; just when we get a side that looks capable of destroying our mini league rivals, along comes an International break and Champions League fixtures to mess with our heads. At least we can rely on some mid-table “differentials” to bypass all that nonsense…

Mauro Formica

We picked out Mauro Formica as a differential back in week one when he was still very much an unknown quantity, and despite an up and down start to the season for Blackburn, Mauro Formica has shown enough promise in recent weeks to bring him back into our thinking. Reveling in his role just behind Yakubu, Formica has been central to many of Blackburn’s attacking ploys, picking up a goal and an assist in his last three games.

At 5.0, Formica sits at the very bottom end of the market and looks a great alternative for that fifth midfielder slot, designed to free up funds. Fixtures look pretty appealing compared to alternatives like Victor Moses and Nathan Dyer. Indeed, two consecutive away trips won’t worry Rovers given that they’ve scored in every game on the road this season. After that, Steve Kean’s side enjoy a decent run of opponents, which could see Formica return further profits.

Gareth McAuley

At 4.0, defenders don’t come any cheaper than Gareth McAuley and with West Brom about to embark on a decent run of fixtures, he looks like outstanding value. He might not be the glamour signing you’ve been craving after two weeks without a fantasy football fix, but as a long term investment, he looks like a solid pick and a good differential considering his low ownership of just 0.9%.

Points wise, we expect to see a decent amount of clean sheets from Roy Hodgson’s side this season. They’ve managed three so far, which is already more than they had the whole of last season. McAuley has also suggested that he could come good with the odd goal and assist. A career average of a goal every 10 games is hardly Lionel Messi standards, but for a defender, that shows promise. A look over his EA PPI scores also suggests he should be in for a few extra bonus points to add to the three he picked up in the 0-0 draw with Fulham.

Jack Rodwell

After Royston Drenthe leapfrogged the differentials straight into the Scout Picks this week, we’re taking a look at his midfield partner Jack Rodwell as a potential alternative. At 0.7 cheaper, an almost guaranteed starter and probably Everton’s form player of the last few games, Rodwell is much more than a poor second choice. With the confidence gained from his International debut, we’re expecting a big performance from the young England star against Wolves.

Despite previously being talked up as a future centre-half, Rodwell has developed into a quality box to box midfielder, and looks a much improved fantasy prospect compared to last year. The departure of Mikel Arteta and return to fitness of Marouane Fellaini has allowed Rodwell a lot more freedom in the middle of the park, and two goals in three games are evidence of this new attacking threat. Our recent members ‘Talent’ article provides all the stats to back up our hunch this week, and with ownership of just 1.9%, Rodwell could well sneak under the radar to provide a solid differential return over Everton’s next three fixtures.

Any suggestions for the team? Transfer wise I'm thinking getting Agbonlahor in for Adebayor and replacing Nani for Lampard.

Gabbidon Woodgate Walker (Simpson and Swansea Taylor)

I thought Bonglahor's fixtures were pretty bad atm. Not the time to get him in despite his form, AVL aren't fixture proof. Am unsure about ditching Nani, and certainly not for Lampard when he's about to face Liverpool. Maybe next week when you can see if Nani really is hopeless / Lampard is fixture-proof.

Cheers for reminding me about AVL fixtures, Lampard seems to be on fire atm for club and country. I haven't got a transfer for this week so I was going to do them over the next fortnight. If Lampard comes good this weekend I won't be able to resist aha. Cheers for the feedback.

It's fine, I've been going through the same musings, Lampard looked too good to resist and I'd dropped Agbonlahor three GWs ago and was wondering if I'd made a mistake. Money is so tight in this game.

Is Bosingwa and Best OUT, Brown and Bendtner IN worth a 4 point hit? Have Cleverley and Mignolet definitely injured, and Best and VDV with a 50% chance or more of playing. Struggling to find the best move to take this week.

    Vorm, Mignolet
    Kompany, Wilkinson, Bosingwa, Ward, Simpson
    Cleverley, Ramsey, Mata, VDV, Silva
    Best, Rooney, Adebayor

Any advice is appreciated. I have 0.1 in the bank, and one free transfer.

Personally I'm keeping best. He's cheap enough to be benched through tough games or injury doubts. And actually as long as he's a fairly regular starter he's an absolute bargain. Newcastle have some tough fixtures and then some good ones after that.

Think those moves could turn out to be regrettable. Nani's coming into form again I feel and Adebayor has always been a streaky player. He's well and truly had a bad spell in terms of goals and is bound to hit the net sooner rather than later. Once that happens you could be looking at 5 in 5.

Lampard would be a good buy just maybe not for Nani.

Maybe Walker to Jones if you have the cash?

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Figueroa Warnock Shawcross (Naylor Simpson)
    Ramsey Silva Nani Dyer (Derry)
    RVP (c) Ade Aguero

Want to be rid of Warnock, Derry and maybe Figueroa sooner or later, but are my priorities elsewhere?

    A) Nani -> VdV (scored loads against Villa but may be injured) or Bale
    for a 4pt hit

    B) Upgrade Derry for a 6m or less midfielder and downgrade Warnock, but for an 8pt hit

    C) sit tight

haha soz mate this site went all messed up on me again, did it happen to you?

anyways, haha yeah that'll do me, im not expecting anything huge, but at same time i'll take anything over 50 or the average given for the gameweek.

Cant expect much from my forwards, but, saying that, it could be an open high scoring game like all the other top team games have been, so who knows haha.

each prediction has been varied looking at them, guess time will only tell, i just hope RVP tears norwich a new one tomoz, in fact he will, he will destroy them ha!

              u want a prediction? hahaha.

No way, hits are almost always non-recovered. Just suffer thru the occasional brilliant double move for an 8 pointer that would have worked. I do think Given is under-performing though. Look at Westwood's fixtures at Sun. and the savings would be well spent elsewhere.

Sorry, should have added 8 point hits-- when both players will very likely play and you can field 11.--- then the 8 pt hit rarely works. Everyone posts here when it does work, though.

Daniel Sturridge did not train on Friday morning but that was due to a knock in Thursday's training rather than a problem left over from his England debut, and the young striker should train on Saturday. - from official Chelsea site

Any chance Sturridge not playing this GW?

Well I've brought him in for Metro but it's different scoring there. I wouldn't have him in my FPL team as I consider a mid 3 of VDV, Nani and Silva as essential. Personally, I would rather have these 3 and 2 budgeritoes rather than the other way round as many seem to be doing.

    Kompany Jones Enrique (Simpson) (Naylor)

    Rooney RVP Sturridge

Have 2 free trannies. Heart is set on Petrov >Drenthe which I think is a no brainer.

I'd be looking at these Utd fixtures and consider Nani. For this to happen, you're going to have do some serious downgrading at the back.

Yeah,I don't really want to sell him but I want Naylor in my team so don't know how to do it. Other option is Westwood to Ruddy and McAuley to Naylor so I get to keep Danny.

Well Baines sets your whole team because he is so expensive. He was great last year- I had him when he started delivering.. Just my own take-- but I'd try to get a fourth big Mid, with Dzeko not playing every week and go cheaper than Baines..

Not sure how much Wilkinson is going to play-- Stoke is putting out different back fours quite often and with Higginbotham back even more so. Wilson plays back there in a reverse OOP.

I like Westwood, with Mig will be back in early Jan-- I think-- probably at the same price-- good choice on Westwood.. Good luck.

To clarify----On Wilko-- he's started the last six weeks..... just a bit concerned about Higginbotham now and Wilson when he recovers from injury. At 4.0 he's great value of course.

Cheers for the advice. Yeah,Wilko is a gamble but with no Begovic he's the only Stoke option. And I think I'll go with Baines. Drenthe still not proven while Baines has delivered in the past.

Is Nani --> VdV worth a 4 pointer? Fixtures not too bad for each but Nani's rotation annoys the hell out of me.

I woke up 10 minutes too late to make the move a few weeks a go when VdV outscored Nani tenfold...

I've played safe with injury doubts before and they've always started, plus VDV has decent recovery powers. But still you never know - this could be the game they give Defoe a start, or that Nani scores a brace.

                  😯

You're on the Bendy bus? The news about Studger isn't too inspiring is it? I really wanted to save him for the Wolves game but if he's got a knock and is doubtful then with all the other potential doubts it could be wise to get rid. Bendy's such an unutterable c*ck though, I imagine it's hard to pull the trigger.

Tierney -> Christina. That's a novel and interesting transfer but I can't see a gender-challenged middle-aged Saffer scoring many points this week.
