Roy Hodgson is less than happy with the displays of Peter Odemwingie. Neil Warnock reveals Heidar Helguson is a doubt for QPR’s trip to Norwich, while Emmanuel Adebayor feels money may prevent him joining Spurs on a permanent basis:

With a home game against Spurs this weekend, the last thing Roy Hodgson needs is a depleted squad. This morning, however, it was revealed that the Baggies are sweating on the fitness of Peter Odemwingie, Paul Scharner, Graham Dorrans and Shane Long ahead of Saturday’s showdown. While Odemwingie and Scharner have both missed the last two league games for West Brom, Dorrans and Long have recently returned from spells on the sidelines. The former, however, picked up an ankle injury towards the end of the weekend win over Bolton, while Long has suffered a leg injury in training and is currently a doubt.

Hodgson was a little less than complimentary about Odemwingie’s performances this term and questioned the player’s commitment. Odemwingie has scored just twice this season after a debut campaign saw him grab 15 goals and 9 assists for the Baggies and his manager is clearly losing patience:

I’m frustrated because we’ve got nothing out of him this year. He didn’t take part in many of the pre-season matches and he hasn’t taken part in many of the matches since then. It’s been one problem after another. For a player who we really put so much into in the hope that he will be our major force for staying in the Premier League, we have not had a return on that at the moment.

Neil Warnock has revealed his on-form striker Heidar Helguson is a doubt for the trip to Norwich. Helguson has scored 5 goals in five games since being handed a first-team opportunity but has failed to train this week. Luke Young was removed from the win at Stoke due to a knee problem and the QPR boss is hopeful the full-back will start training tomorrow.

Royston Drenthe has been talking up his flourishing left flank partnership with Leighton Baines after Saturday’s win over Wolves. The Dutchman has been fielded on both wings by David Moyes this season but is looking likely to stay on the left, as he revealed the Everton boss has been encouraging him to work in tandem with Baines during games:

At the moment I am playing with one of the best left-backs in the world. Leighton has really good qualities. We had a good relationship right from the beginning and that is really important. He can understand me and I can understand him – I am really happy to play with someone like that. The gaffer gave me some jobs to do, to help Bainesy. It is important that when I am on the pitch I play and fight for the team.

Despite his manager’s assurances that he would be fit for last night’s Benfica match, Wayne Rooney missed out altogether. The United man picked up a hip injury in the narrow win at Swansea on Saturday evening and still remains a doubt for this weekend’s home clash with Newcastle. Sir Alex Ferguson explained last night:

He wasn’t fit for tonight, so we need to wait to see what he is like over the next few days. We will give him every chance, of course – we did for today but he wasn’t really fit, so we’ll just have to wait.

There’s no doubt of the positive impact Emmanuel Adebayor has had on the Tottenham team since moving to White Hart Lane on loan. Spurs have won eight and drawn one of the nine league games he’s played in and only last week, Rafael Van der Vaart praised the Togo international for an upturn in his own performances. A permanent deal, however, may hit a stumbling block due to Adebayor’s extraordinary wages. Man City still pay £100K of his £170K wages and with Spurs pay structure meaning Van der Vaart is the highest paid squad member on £70K per week, Adebayor admitted that, despite the move rekindling his love of the game, money could be the deciding factor:

We all play football to get money. I’m from Africa and I have to give something back to my community. I will keep doing this until the end of my career. I’ll leave it to Harry Redknapp, Daniel Levy and Khaldoon Al Mubarak to find a solution among themselves. For me, what is important is to enjoy myself on the pitch. But I am having big fun here with this team. We are all laughing. I feel just like a baby.

Joe Riley is a major doubt for Bolton’s home game with Everton after picking up a hamstring problem in training. The young right-back has been Owen Coyle’s preferred right-back in the Trotters’ last two games, starting ahead of Gretar Steinsson in the back-four.

Ronald Zubar played forty-five minutes of Wolves’ reserve clash with Arsenal last night and is fit and available ahead of the trip to Chelsea. With regular right-back Richard Stearman sidelined with a broken wrist, Zubar looks likely to get the nod for the Stamford Bridge outing.

Mick McCarthy has challenged the rest of his squad to prove themselves ahead of a busy Christmas schedule for the Midlands outfit. The December 4th game against Sunderland is the first of seven fixtures in the space of twenty-nine days and the Wolves boss admits he will be looking to rotate in order to get the most of his players over the festive period:

There are a lot of games coming up with the Christmas period. Games come a little bit thicker and faster than they do at the moment from Saturday to Sunday. There might be a need for change so everyone has got to be fit and raring to go.

Reports today suggest Carlos Tevez could be lined up for a short-term loan deal with AC Milan. A six-month arrangement has been suggested, with the option of a two-year deal to follow, with Milan number two Mauro Tassotti allegedly admitting the club are interested.

Nicolas Anelka could be free to leave Chelsea in January, according to reports. With the Frenchman’s contract expiring at the end of the season, he’s been quoted as saying the idea of finishing his career at Stamford Bridge is ”not to be”.

      1. Stick - I wouldn't trust a Plzen defender as far as I could throw him
      2. Probably Moutinho, but he has a habit of solid 2/3/4 pointers, so you could gamble on Horvarth.
I've dropped a 2 pointer for Moutinho, he should do alright..

SAF is always doing that....the journo tho' should have known that and rephrased the question though. Perhaps in a 'sh1t sandwich' management way of compliment, insult, compliment.

You must be proud of Manchester United's excellent recent defensive record in the league of the last three games.

How can you ensure that is replicated in Europe?

You must be pleased that your midfield is chipping in with goals..

He just comes across as an old grump these days. Pussyfooting around things seems to be the only way to get him to answer the questions.

I'd have asked him why he thought his current central midfield was ever going to be good enough to win the EPL and Champs League? That's the question the Man U fans I know would like an answer to.

3 pts is 3 pts whether you win 1-0 or 5-0. However, i've a feeling someone's gonna get a right battering very soon. Take your point we're not playing well at the min but last night aside, we're getting results without playing well. Some might call that being a championship winning side?

no offence..but both Jamie19 and SAF really need to lighten up. You just get abusive and SAF walks out. SAF could have easily deflected that question and turned it into a positive. And you Mr Jamie 19 need to take criticism of your manager less seriously. The more you harp on about it the more the masses here will egg you on...you need to handle this better as well and with humour.

                Why have them then?

The fans like to hear the managers opinion on things. Press conferences give them the chance to hear it.

Why have them? So the media have something to write about, when they're not going through Steve Coogan's bins or hacking the phones of teenage murder victims.

I'm a fan, I just care that his teams play good football and ideally win titles.

I think any of us would get a bit bored of press conferences if we'd been doing them for 30 odd years, he sees it as a chore that he'd rather not bother with.

I didn't even know managers did regular press conferences til I came on this site for team news 😉

Nah, when it comes to betting I can be pretty impartial - Napoli are a very good side, and I think City have been flattered a bit by their easy fixtures so far and the demolition job they did on us. They're obviously a very good side, but let's see how they do when the chips are down.

Throwing my WC team into the mix.

    Westwood / Ruddy

    Jones / Enrique / N. Taylor / Simpson / McAuley

    Lampard / Silva / VDV / Drenthe / Allen

    RVP / Adebayor / Helguson

With enough in the bank to upgrade Helg to Ba in a couple of weeks.

    Whadayathink?

I was gonna say Helguson seems a dodgy choice but then I looked at his history - pretty impressive stuff for the minutes he's played!

Decent team but dont like the defence tbh.

Coops, that looks like a very strong team, apart from the obvious GK rotation issue (I almost always play home GK of two solid rotators).

Helgy as a two week wonder could be a sharp move, and Ba's surprised this season, in a good way.

      Jolly good luck to you.

Thanks very much for the feedback!

As far as the defence goes, I'll play Jones and Enrique most weeks, with Simpson and Taylor rotating (since they rotate very well and both play in solid defences).

The goalkeeper issue is indeed less than ideal, but if I want to get Ba in then have no spare cash to do anything better unfortunately! The only player I could really downgrade is Lampard, and am reluctant to do that as it's a major differential from my league leader. So stuck with Westwood for the time being it seems

I did w/c last week looking similar, agree with your def choices and fwds look good at the moment with the ba option . I went for rotating keepers in Vorm and Hennesey, but i've had Vorm from the beginning so nice and cheap. Not sure you should go with Westwood as you have turner, would find a cheapie to rotate with ruddy

Ok I've been doing some research into my replacement for Herr Suarez.

At first I've been looking at Hernandez. He's a clinical so and so and nailed on for a start this week.

then I started to look into Ade's shots on goal, influence, threat etc...and his stats are basically double Hernandez. Now I have to weight up Hernandez's clincal nature, but Ade's stats suggest assist posibilities and more chances.

I've also looked at fixtures and spurs are very, very good for a few weeks, better than Man Utd's even.

In conclusion I'm starting to warm to Ade much more.

Recently finding out that he gave his house to orphans and is building a school and two hospitals have also impressed me, although I'm not sure that will help on getting bonus pts...be good if it did though.

+1 had him since he arrived at spurs. He's averaging almost 7 points per game (despite a lean spell) and has what I believe is the form midfield in the league behind him. I'd say Ade over Hernandez but both good options.

I would still go for Hernandez even with Adebayors generosity, Adebayor misses so many, I have been frustrated with him until this week,, at Villa he just had so many oppurtunities. Should of scored atleast a hattrick.

rooney to hernandez is sound...but Jones could be rested. He is a horse of a player, but two internationals, played the weekend, and midweek and smalling and rafael coming back say to me that he is 50-50.

Looks to me like DeLaet is your more pressing concern so I'd go B and hope Rooney plays.

Yes Jonty, following that logic, the Togoese kids will do better than your FPL team. 🙂

But Ade is one of those genuine points potential players a la Rooney, RvP, Drogba perhaps Suarez, assist points could be over half as much as goals scored points, and all with plenty of baps potential. Chico is completely different, a cold-eyed goal getter more similar to Bent, or Defoe.

Fair made me chuckle did that.

I reckon to have both is the solution. Not sure about Hernandez in long term, but for the short-mid term reckon he's a good shout.

Have been looking at the same move myself though not sure if i want 3 Spurs players (Have BAE and VDV) and i have no MNU attack (though i'm not a fan of Chico was always intending to bring in Rooney this week)

However, what about keeping Suarez this week Home to MCY - after their performance yesterday could the bubble be about to burst? Liverpool may be up for it after getting those 3 points from the bridge

I have toyed with that...but Suarez's shots off target also reflects badly on bonus should he score...which is rare. The racism is also a factor.

Also with Mancini if they lose a match his attitude is more likely to be to return to a stronger defensive formation rather than all out attack. As we knew from last season he was very good at organising a defensive minded side.

Always tough scoring over 70 and losing, but I think I had my slice of luck the first three games in Wigan to me.

Hhhmmm. I was thinking about an 8pointer this week, but I think I'll hold it to 4 Your team looks good Greendreams. Very few easy games in the mini leagues I'm in. No sod seems to have lost interest yet. 🙂

Ah, I see. My work IT system blocks YouTube.

I was just interested to see the pattern of some of your transfers, merely out of interest. I'll have a scan every now and then of regular poster teams. It's a sort of self-flagellation I go through every now and then, mainly when I look at my own dismal score. 🙂

              182670 - knock yourself out.

Took my first hit last week. But as it was Suarez/shite-B'burn-defender for Adebayor/Baines, I was quite happy with it.

    Silva's possible next 4:

    GW13: Liv (away)
GW14: Massive champs league just 3 days after, huge risk of being rested and missing Norwich (home)
    GW15: Chelsea (away)
    GW16: Arsenal (home)

I know you're going to say "but Chelsea and Arsenal are hardly defending well" etc. etc., but I really do not see big returns for Silva for any of those games, and I'm certain he won't start against Norwich. Good time to do cheeky little Silva > Bale or someone similiar if you ask me.

I'm buggu-marking Bale scoring 25pts more than Silva over the next 4 gameweeks, Silva dropping 0.2 and Bale rising 0.5 in the same time, rendering your argument invalid. It's times like this that separate the men from the boys.

What are Rooney owners going to do if Fergie rules him out of the Newc game? I have already done De Laet --->Brown earlier this week to beat De Laet's drop.

I am tempted by a -4pt transfer to get in Hernandez if he is out, looking to do that change if his next 2 games or so give Moses-esque returns.

Knowing Fergie that'd make me more confident he'll play.

I'd probably bring in Hernandez. But not for a hit...if it'd cost you a hit and you have a solid mid/front line to field without him (which you do) I wouldn't say it's worth it

yeah, i would happily player Dyer this week if Rooney is out. Chopping Given next week to free up cash to improve Sturridge (if becomes rotation risk) and nick in one of Jones/Richards.

So Rooney can wait, just getting annoyed with rivals streaking ahead with Ba/Adebayor etc after dumping him a while ago. BTW, good team name 😀

Season keeper my arse! Rooney's going from my team regardless of whether he'll play this GW or not.

Either straight swap for Hernandez or Aguero or else I will get Adebayor and Bale and make it the Spurs trinity with VdV already on board.

If i get Rooney out it will be for Chico and maybe bank the money for Aguero when his fixtures ease up. I had to sort out my defence this week so Rooney will stay another week for sure unless I think, oh sod it and take a hit of Friday night.

No is a season's keeper IMO (apart from a fit RVP, Silva and Vorm this year!)

I am wondering how good Paddy Power are - also do any of you bet on simple win/lose outcomes in big games, eg Man City hosting Blackburn or whatever, even if ths odds were poor it would still be some return right?

Straight forward win/lose is a good way to bet. Short price winner is better than a long price loser. That's why the bookies offer so many in play bets to give you loads of ways to lose your money. Stick to your thoughts, don't chase your losses.
