Our fifth week of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game came to a close, with an English side finally clinching a place in the knock-out stages. Hats off to Arsene Wenger, then, with Arsenal’s win over Dortmund just one of eight fixtures we’re running the rule over…

FC APOEL

The attacking stats (37% of possession and just one shot all game) do the Cypriot champions no favours but, right now, do they care? Not in the slightest. In arguably the most competitive group of all, FC APOEL have exceeded all expectations by becoming the first team from Cyprus to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages with a 0-0 draw away at Zenit St. Petersburg.

Unbeaten in all three games on the road, victories in both home games so far, APOEL’s resolute display and adept work off the ball was exemplified by the likes of Nuno Morais last night, with 10 recovered balls and a clean sheet handing the defender an 8 point Fantasy haul. People often mock the boring and predictable nature of the Champions League group stages but APOEL have ripped up the form book and proved the doubters wrong, clinching a place in the last sixteen with a game still to spare.

Robin Van Persie

It’s more a case of “how many” whenever the Dutchman takes to the pitch these days. Dortmund arrived at the Emirates in strong form last night but Arsenal continued their recent resurgence by sweeping aside the Bundesliga champions. Alex Song deserves a mention, dancing through the away defence to set up the hosts’ opener but Van Persie, once again, stole the show with both his side’s goals in the 2-1 win. The Gunners skipper played the full ninety minutes last night but will have until Saturday dinnertime to recover, with a 5.30pm kick off against Fulham next on the agenda.

Didier Drogba

The big Ivorian was once again chosen to lead the line ahead of Fernando Torres. Having started against Liverpool last weekend, Drogba vindicated his selection last night by firing the Blues ahead at Leverkusen. Andre Villas-Boas’ side once again came unstuck, though, and are anything but certain to progress to the knockout stages. A goalless draw or win at home to Valencia in the final group match is now required but given their defensive woes, nothing seems certain right now for the out of sorts Blues.

Roberto Soldado

Pretty much the whole Valencia team got in on the action last night as the Spanish side sliced through Genk like a hot machete through butter. Roberto Soldado provided the cutting edge, grabbing a hat trick inside the first thirty-six 36 minutes to return a 13 point Fantasy haul half-time whistle. Team mates Pablo Hernandez (11), Costa (12) and Jonas (12) all picked up substantial hauls and have helped their side’s chances of qualification no end. By our calculations, with the Valencia goal difference now suitably amped up, they can qualify for the next round with a score draw away at Stamford Bridge next Matchday.

Lionel Messi

A night of heavy sparring between the European heavyweights of AC Milan and Barcelona ended in a narrow victory for the visitors in a five-goal San Siro thriller.

The indomitable Clarence Seedorf teed up Zlatan Ibrahimovic to open the scoring against his old club- one he had talked about a fair bit in his recently released book. Kevin-Prince Boateng made that seem a distant memory with this cracker of a goal for the home side.

A Mark Van Bommel own-goal made Barca’s task a little easier before a re-taken (with yellow card in-between for a stuttered run up) Lionel Messi penalty made it two. The Argentine was then given license to provide when he threaded a pitch perfect pass through a tunnel of Milan defenders to find Xavi, giving the reigning champions the last goal needed for victory. Thirteen points in five games and Barcelona are home and hosed at top of the group.

Hulk

The Brazilian striker’s fourth goal of the campaign helped Porto to a 2-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk that subsequently knocked their hosts out of the Champions League. FC Porto are back in the picture ahead of their final home fixture at Estádio do Dragão – Zenit St Petersburg will visit needing just a draw while the Portuguese side have to win in order to qualify. Fireworks will be expected in about two weeks from now – be it on the pitch or in the skies of Portugal. With Hulk having failed to score in only one of his games so far, the smart money’s on him producing yet again.

Ioannis Fetfatzidis

Arsenal’s victory over Dortmund meant Marseille needed just a point at home to Olympiakos. Having conceded a single goal in the Champions League prior to yesterday, the scene was set for Group F to be done and dusted with one Matchday to go. The Greek visitors had other ideas, though, and with ten minutes remaining, royally upset the party when substitute Ioannis Fetfatzidis drilled home from fifteen yards out. Marseille are still in pole position for second spot, though- victory in Dortmund in the final group stage match would ensure qualification.

Marek Bakos

With Barcelona and Milan already through in Group H, BATE could have secured the third place Europa League spot with victory over Viktoria Plzen. Marek Bakos had other ideas, though, scoring his, and Plzen’s, second goal of the campaign in a 1-0 away win. If BATE fail to win in Barcelona next time round -there’s a very strong possibility this will be the case- Plzen will seal that third place.

I'm watching the Barcelona game now, after recording it last night, and in the 32nd minute, Messi plays Villa through and Abbiati does very well to save his shot. the commentator says: "Messi, has options, and one of those is David Silva, Silvaaa!! Oh!" Instead of Villa. The other commentator didnt even correct him. Pathetic. Cant even get players' names right, which is about 99% of their job.

Tom, how you faring? I'm pretty gutted from last night. Whatever AVB does, seems to go wrong.

IMO the biggest problem with Chelsea is that the players aren’t able to adapt positionally to AVB’s strategy of pressing and the defenders are ageing to run this high defense line. It might work for Barca, but they have quality in their back four. Even their oldest def Puyol is one of the best CBs in the world. Chelsea need to go back to playing deep once again. That’s where the strength of most players like Terry, Luiz, Ivano, etc. are. AVB simply can not blindly play his favorite formation/tactics (from Porto), ignoring the requirement of his players.

Also, we need to switch back to our 4-1-2-1-2 and let Studge & Torres/Drog to play upfront. Whenever Mata plays at CAM, Torres should play upfront. Whenever Lamps does, the Drog should.

      Ivan—-Luiz—–Terry—-Cole
      ————-Romeu————-
      ——Ramires Mereiles——
      ———-Mata/Lamps———-
      —–Sturridge—–Torres/Drog

Hard to drop Mata/Lampard I reckon but you could always drop Lampard deeper for Mereiles.

Lampard should be dropped alltogether... they need to play Mata through the middle to get the max out of Torres. Lampard, despite scoring goals, has been awful and his passing-range is about 5yds.

Thank you...it had to be said. They can't really put him anywhere...he'll score the odd goal but they won't crush, and will barely beat most teams. Lampard would be exposed like an adam would bee exposed where he can not hang on to possession in a tough environment. Chelsea are stuck in strategy purgatory...

I see your point - but that's harsh reality. It boils down to Torres/Mata or Drog/Lamps IMO.

The problem with playing both L & M is that Lampard's been struggling to pass the ball anywhere near Mata, if you see any of the games. Also, Lamps having lost his pace, can't defend well at that role.

something AVB should have seen and applied pressure on Fatty from day one. Instead he pairs him with McEachran...and lets the kid do all the running while Frank cruises and continues to do "his thing". Frank seems the only person still on the team allowed to do, "his thing" despite the best interests of the team.

    Barnett - Wilkinson - J Enrique - (Raylor) - (Simpson)
    B Johnson - Walters - VDV - Silva - (Watson)
    RVP - Ade - Aguero

I'm really not liking my defence. I can't see any of them getting clean sheets, and I'm worried that City will put 5 or 6 past Liverpool. Could it be worth playing Raylor instead of Enrique?

Two players with good home games who I predict will start for their respective clubs this weekend.

I think 'Lamps in' is a pretty short sighted move and Yakubu (the makeweight in this deal) doesn't have a great fixture this week.

It just doesn't feel like good reasoning to me.

zz for me. Goalscoring form should return as well, now that Wickham's back. Also, you don't have to worry about international injuries/yellow card bans, which the other 2 are prone to. 😀

      Hello y'all, team for this week is;

      Vorm
      N Taylor/Kompany/Brown
      Ramsey/Van der Vaart/Mata/Johnson(Nor)
      Sturridge/Suarez/Van Persie

      Subs Dyer/Gabbidon/R Taylor

My question is should I use my free transfer to do Suarez to Hernandez or Adebayor, or can you think of any better options, I have 5.1 in the bank?

Would do Suarez to Aguero or Ramsey to Silva if you have that much spare cash, you don't have any City attacking cover which is a big mistake this season

Thanks, I was thinking of doing Mata to Silva next week or Sturiddge to Adebayor, don't really want to get any City players in this week away to Liverpool, it's likely to eb a tough game.

Suppose you could leave it for this week but City are more than capable of slaughtering Liverpool, especially with a rested Aguero. Can understand your thinking for this GW but long term I certainly see more value in City forwards than Spurs or Utd

Van Persie FUL (H) Adebayor WBA (A) Bendtner WIG (H)

Bench: Given / Dyer / Naylor / Simpson

Following on from a conversation re RVP on the prevoius page...is the Captain's Poll meant to be "who is the best captain option out of all the players?" or "who is the best captain option out of the players you have, aka who are you captaining?"

Neither. It's a poll for "who would you want your mini league rivals to captain in order for you to score more"

Anyway, that's the way I vote.

My serious suggestion Nani -> Sess, Shawcross/Wilkinson -> Baines

What follows are some ideas for alternatives:

            Nani -> Cahill
            Agbonlahor -> Saha
            Shawcross -> Jones
Agbonlahor -> Hernandez (funded by Nani downgrade)

No transfers required this week I think. So I'm contemplating Shawcross to Brown (whoever it is would be my 3rd defender this GW)

          Anyone see issue with this.

I have Ramsey and de Laet I'd want to get rid of, but only 0.2 in the bank prevents any reasonable move with de Laet at the moment.

I'm not sure if there is an injury or something but I would undoubtedly keep Shawcross and play him this weekend.

DeLaet can wait. It could be an opportunity to change Ramsey although I'd be reluctant considering their home fixture this weekend.

Blackburn are scoring for fun at the moment which makes the CS potential of Stoke that much lower.

Given my team, Ramsey is sitting on the bench (behind Sturridge, Walters and Sinclair)

In a little bit of a mess, and not looking in good shape for this week, so really appreciate some feedback on my team please
          Westwood (Vorn)
          Enrique Wilkinson Kompany (Simpson DeLaet)
          Ramsey Silva Drenthe VDV (Ferguson)
          RVP Adebayor Rooney

Transfers considering over next two gameweeks-
          Rooney>Hernandez
          Ramsey>Sessegnon
          DeLaet>Jones

This week I will do Rooney>Hernandez, next week the other two for a 4 point hit.
Does this look good? any better options?

            Negative.

Keep Rooney unless told he will not play.

            DeLaet can wait.

Ramsey > Sess (would prefer Seb more myself) is the best move out of the 3 proposed.

If you're forced into a 4 point hit to do the transfers, I'd consider the de Laet to Jones move this week (along with the Rooney downgrade).

Downgrade Rooney and try get a playing mid for Ferguson; Walters, Sessegnon and Brunt are options depending on budget.

You're not going to be happy defensively this gameweek anyway.

Moving Ferguson is more of a priority than de Laet though.

William Hill gives Liverpool 23/10 for a CS, Man City slightly better at 21/10 - need to add assist factor too = Richards I think (a close call)

Would depend on how much I had to spend:

Using my team as a base I come up with:

            Vorm/Krul
            Baines/BAE/Kompany/Simpson/Brown
            VdV/Silva/Walters/Sessegnon/Bale
            RvP/Saha/Sturridge

Just a quick one I put together - I'd have 0.3 left over if I did this.
