Craven Cottage is the venue, as Fulham versus Liverpool wraps up Gameweek 14 on a bitterly cold Monday night. Braving the unpleasant conditions outside, the Dugout Discussion is open once more. Martin Jol and Kenny Dalglish have handed their team sheets in, and this is how the sides line-up tonight…

Fulham XI: Schwarzer, Kelly, Senderos, Hangeland, JA Riise, Murphy, Etuhu, Dempsey, Ruiz, Zamora, Dembele.

Liverpool XI: Reina, Johnson, Enrique, Skrtel, Agger, Henderson, Adam, Spearing, Bellamy, Carroll, Suarez.

The hosts make one change to the side that drew at the Emirates, as Steven Kelly comes in for Chris Baird at right-back.

As for the visitors, the devastating injury to their star defensive-midfielder Lucas, means that Jay Spearing comes in as his replacement. Elsewhere, Andy Carroll partners Luis Suarez up-front, and surprisingly there’s no reward in the form of a starting berth for Maxi Rodriguez, who’s enjoying somewhat of a purple patch at the moment.

The Dugout Discussion chatroom can be found by clicking here, so come in and follow all the action as it unfolds.

If we werent bound by the rules governing squad ratio, ie 2 keepers, 5 defenders, 5 mids and 3 forwards but still had to stick to the chosen formations would you still go for 2,5,5 and 3?

Nah, i'd have 4 strikers and one less mid or defender.

there's quite a few good budget striket options - Yak, Morison, Graham, who all score better than a 5.0 mid so are better to rotate

Id probably just go with one top keeper as well and just hope he played all the time, altho id prob stay clear of Man U for that reason.

Intriguing, 1, 5, 5, 4 is how I'd play it. I feel like I'm obliged to pick a keeper i don't really want so I'd get an extra striker instead to give me two heavyweights possibly RVP/Aguero, one midpriced possibly Adebayor, and one bargain possibly Ba, Sturridge, Helguson or Yakubu.

Exactly, see I would say strikers go out of form over a far shorter timescale than keepers or indeed defenders, so you'd want go cover your bases there.

I can only play 1 of these 3 players this weekend, who do you think it should be?

    repost from last page

Do I get Schwarzer or Howard to replace Westy. Howard obv has DGW but I have Bale and VdV, Schwarzer has tougher fixtures but he has form and plenty of saves

Also what option sounds like the best defensively

    A) Brown, Jones, BAE, McAuley, Vidic
    B) Brown, Jones, BAE, McAuley, Baines
    C) Jags, Jones, BAE, McAuley, Smalling
D Brown, Jones, BAE, Jags Smalling?

Know people rave about Baines, but tbh him and Vidic strike me as just too expensive, and B or D gives me 4 solid defenders and one cheaper option who starts every week.

(Thanks to Fratboy for his thoughts)

Yeah, guess the bookies have it right then. Anything around 2/1 or just over I'd be snapping up! 2-2 draw could be tempting; both sides are weak at the back, and both sets of forwards like a goal or 2!

I have this hunch that Ba is the type of buy that you wait patiently for good fixtures (whilst gaining points and value). You then buy him for the good fixtures and that player is a flop.

Probably won't happen with Ba but you get the scenario.

This Yaya Toure issue.. I had him in my team last season when he was 5.5 and playing just off Tevez, and even then he didn't score/assist as much as I would hope for someone in that position. At 7.5, I really don't think you'd be getting enough returns from him. I know he's nailed on, but I imagine he'll be playing a very deep role over the next few matches.

Got 16.2 for a MF and FW

    a) Walcott + Welbeck
    b) Walcott + Ba
    c) Nani + Yak/Helg/Morison
    d) Other

Decided I don't want Bale (got VDV) and I'm sticking to my guns. Also got sturridge so mata would be overkill.

Disappointing result for Liverpool tonight...this Caroll fella just doesn't look good atm and upsets the balance of the team.

I'm thinking of VDV to Nani for this week. Just fed up of the uncertainty with VDV.

Then, crazily, for GW16 I'm looking at Bendy to Vellios and Walters to Bale for (-4).

BAE, Bale, Adebayor and Howard, Cahill, Vellios all in place then for DGW.

    Front 8 of ; Silva/ Bale/ Nani/ Cahill/ Formica/ RVP/ Adebayor/ Vellios.

Actually in your context your transfer makes some sense because VDV is in serious danger of a 0 whereas Nani probably is guaranteed 3 for the CS point.

Disclosure: I did ship Nani out this GW so see this from the POV of a let down loyalist.

Don't understand why Nani has changed from seriously poor value to recommendation this week - and yes I did see Chico's injury. If you take 2200 as a good score - conservative - at ~10m Nani needs to average just under 6pts per GW to pull his weight in value - let alone outperform it. He's only had a couple of assists in a looooooong run that started even before United were thrashed by City and went all defensive on us. He's seriously short of adequate. Now, it's said Chico being injured is a game changer with Nani playing likewise a second forward, and indeed he was in the AVL game. But firstly, that didn't make things any better - it was a dire game with few United chances - and secondly can you see him staying there next week when Ferguson can adjust his lineup from the start to include Welbeck, Macheda, Berbatov and the rest? (pending injuries, correct me on that)

Besides, United are weaker without their consummate goal poacher, not stronger.

There will be a time to get Nani in because he is a massive talent in a good team. That time is not now.

I'm gonna say you're wrong on the final point, Chich is useless to where United are trying to go. And I don't think Nani will play off the striker either. Welbeck will. Carrick is the problem now, but if United can keep more possession then they will be alright. Also, one of the MAJOR reasons Rooney had to play back so deep was because Javier can't hold the ball up on his own...the kid only passes backwards. The days of the poacher is all but over with teams defensively flooding the midfield the ball will never consistently get to him to do any poaching. Welbeck is where it's at for this team, also forget about Young for now, with Cleverly and Anderson out, the ball will initiate 7/10 times down the right side to Nani. They just don't pull picks out of the air. You can forget about Macheda or Berbs playing.

Interesting stuff and I've heard a good few say Chico was bad for the team but good for himself. I am very willing to agree having seen stunning team performances between Charity Shield and City, and definitely am watching Welbeck because I don't buy the Nani in second striker theory like I said. If he starts I may pick him, realistically do you think we'll know before the deadline?

Good cheap midfielders are harder to get than good cheap strikers. Of the top 10 scoring midfielders only 2 had a starting value of less than 7 (Laarson and Walters) vs 4 of the top ten strikers. So it's easier to get value from a striker and have a big hitter like Nani. Granted his form has not been good but 6 points a gameweek through United's good run is easily reachable.

Fair point, just seems like there's much better big hitters out there - Silva who is Mr Consistent, Bale who seems to have managed consistent and explosive, Mata who emerges from both Chelsea wins and losses with assists and increasingly goals. And of course our rapidly deteriorating VDV, who knows with him! All I'd say is I spent months keeping Nani afraid he'd explode while someone else did each week.

Yeah, I just feel as though I should have some sort of Chelsea 'coverage'. (Yes, I know, I hate that word and it doesn't make any sense, but still....)

Might have a look at the other options around that price bracket, but from memory, there's no one else who particularly appeals.

I'm also not convinced I should be getting rid of my one expensive midfielder - Silva, and replacing him with someone cheapish. A midfield of Drenthe, Ramsey, Johnson, Bale and Ramires looks a little lightweight.

It's the final paragraph of this, rather interesting, article about Yaya Toure.

        http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/dec/05/manchester-city-kolo-toure-african-players

"In the meantime City's manager has learned that Aleksandar Kolarov will be out for a minimum of three weeks, but possibly twice that length, because of the groin injury the left-back suffered in the Carling Cup quarter-final at Arsenal last week. If City's worst fears are confirmed, Kolarov could miss as many as 10 matches."
