Craven Cottage is the venue, as Fulham versus Liverpool wraps up Gameweek 14 on a bitterly cold Monday night. Braving the unpleasant conditions outside, the Dugout Discussion is open once more. Martin Jol and Kenny Dalglish have handed their team sheets in, and this is how the sides line-up tonight…

Fulham XI: Schwarzer, Kelly, Senderos, Hangeland, JA Riise, Murphy, Etuhu, Dempsey, Ruiz, Zamora, Dembele.

Liverpool XI: Reina, Johnson, Enrique, Skrtel, Agger, Henderson, Adam, Spearing, Bellamy, Carroll, Suarez.

The hosts make one change to the side that drew at the Emirates, as Steven Kelly comes in for Chris Baird at right-back.

As for the visitors, the devastating injury to their star defensive-midfielder Lucas, means that Jay Spearing comes in as his replacement. Elsewhere, Andy Carroll partners Luis Suarez up-front, and surprisingly there’s no reward in the form of a starting berth for Maxi Rodriguez, who’s enjoying somewhat of a purple patch at the moment.

The Dugout Discussion chatroom can be found by clicking here, so come in and follow all the action as it unfolds.

He's in a long line of decent managers that can only see talent in their own tunnel vision of football. Will Spearing get a one match ban? Didn't see the match, was it a straight red? Isn't Fabio Aurelio available?

He got the ball and then followed through, his momentum wouldn't cause him to want to drop kick Dembele though (who was not involved in ay headbutt antics). He chose to, and so deserved a red.

ok now that game is over and place at the top of my ML is secure I can repost

I was thinking of having Jones and Smalling in as that was all that Hernandez allowed me to afford. But given that I’m now likely to switch to Welbeck, what do people think about having Vidic and Jones as 2 of my defenders (alongside BAE, McAuley and Brown?)

just leaves me to pick a keeper to replace Westy, it's Howard (better fixtures and DGW) vs Schwarzer (cheaper, makes more saves, arguably in better form)

alternatively I could get Smalling st this allows ,e to get Jags in for DGW (as long as I don't get Howard, though when I have Bale and VdV a keeper for Everton seems like a better option as he can regain some points with saves)

Henderson we'll have to agree to disagree on that one. He just seems like a youth player that never should have been told to play in an advanced position. He has great instincts but has not progressed offensively enough to be rated as an attacker.

What can i buy with 9000? If you go with the goalscorer in a 1-0 win getting the 3 points you wont be far wrong.

13 1-0s this season. Scorer got 3 bonus in 9 of them, 2 in the other 3 (1 was an own goal).

Like i said, whats the point? Hernandez got the 3 the other week and the ball bounced up, hit him on the arse and went in, he did nothing else.

The point being that under the (admittedly imperfect) old system the bonus points could help to tell the rest of the story, rather than just reinforcing the stats which are awarded through the standard points system.

The BPs do correlate pretty well with FPL points but you have keep your mind open to the possibility that BOTH correlate well with how well the player actually played.

You do see defenders rewarded frequently. Granted, this is more likely in a low scoring game or if they grabbed something up top too, but that's understandable as that actually reflects how important they were to the scoreline.

no, there are no points for tackles, clearances, passes completed, etc. the stats tell an unbiased story of who did what in the game, and awards them accordingly, better than a pundit in the stands who remembers 3 cool passes from charlie adam and forgets the other 50 he shanked and reckons he earned a bp

Messy, your argument assumes that all passes / tackles / clearances are equal - they aren't, some are more equal than others, and the raw stats can't differentiate between them.

The stats used for the PPI (as far as I'm aware) don't distinguish between a last-ditch goal-saving tackle and a bog-standard block; an incredible piece of skill to beat a man and a 'Theo' (hoof it down the line and outsprint the defender); an outside of the boot 40-yard ball onto the attacker's toe and a 5 yard simple cut-back.

I disagree, i think its awful, and ive been on the good end of it. Easier to scrap the bonus altogether and just increase a goal by 2 points and an assist by 1.

Are you actually sure about that? I know your thinking is that goal > assist > everything else but that's not a safe assumption if you look through the FPL bonus breakdowns. There are surprises virtually every week.

I can't actually bet you anything since I don't know you, but I bet you 9000 internet points it's not 3 Dempsey 2 Murphy. Expect a def or keeper up there.

dempsey played well, had a shot off crossbar, and had the drive to follow up a shot and the nuts to finish it, several players could've scored but didn't nut up, if he gets 3 well done dempsey, same w/ murphy had the willingness to take shot on

I'm pretty sure I've read that they do differentiate with things like last man tackles/clearances and 'not last man', and regardless of how pretty a dribble/cross is completely irrelevant, its all about whether the dribble is successful and if the cross is met by a teammate

It's not at all irrelevant - players like Zidane, Maradona, my grav, my nickname etc aren't judges on their stats, they are judge on the beauty and artistry of their play as well as its raw effectivenss - something which stats can't measure.

I realise that Barry Ferguson might weaken my argument somewhat here 😉

Sorry, replied half way up the discussion for some reason!

Yeah I can't argue with the 3 for a goalscorer in a 1-0, but not the complete prediction of 3 for Dempsey and 2 for Murphy. I see the latter as far more uncertain cos he'll have stiff competition from defensive stats/other mids.

I would say the guy scoring the winner isn't undeserving of a 2/3. The real debate here is what a Player Performance Index actually means. People seem to think it's equivalent to Man of the Match or artistic merit, and I respect that, but EA have gone for a system that measures contribution to a match and nothing else, and while you might disagree with that you can't say it's random. It's actually remarkably predictable which is your complaint.

Id just love to see a breakdown of how it works, woud be very interesting. Ive seen someone post that Mata only scored 9 on the PPI, now i watched that game and, Tery aside, he was close to being their best player.

I accept that it can be argued that the scorer in a 1-0 win should always be man of the match but i disagree with that.

I guess thats down to missing out on numerous 50p awards at junior level when doing all the work only for the lazy git up front to take all the plaudits!

They've (King Kenny) have long given up on the 'Downing Hoofing it to Carroll' pipe-dream. They didn't do due diligence on the players they brought in. Downing and Henderson are suspect, and he continues to play them. And on top of that he lets Maxi languish and plays others out of position.I'll be selling Enrique...soon.
