We see out 2011 with a programme of seven Premier League fixtures, after Gameweek 19 got under way last night with a 3-1 win for Liverpool over Newcastle. The Dugout Discussion opens for the final time this year, and the incoming team news from Old Trafford suggests that a certain Scot has begun his birthday celebrations a tad early…

Man Utd XI: De Gea, Rafael, Jones, Carrick, Evra, Nani, Valencia, Park, Welbeck, Hernandez, Berbatov.

Blackburn XI: Bunn, Lowe, Samba, Hanley, Pedersen, Henley, Nzonzi, Petrovic, Rochina, Formica, Yakubu.

Sir Alex Ferguson, who turns 70 today, names a peculiar looking side for the second game running. Given United’s 5-0 drubbing of Wigan last time out, who are we to question his selection? However, eyebrows will be raised at the exclusion of Wayne Rooney from the matchday squad, after only featuring for half an hour on Boxing Day.

Phil Jones returns from illness to partner Michael Carrick in defence rather than midfield. Nani and Antonio Valencia play in midfield behind a trio or strikers, leaving Ji Sung Park to man the middle of the park.

As for Steve Kean’s side, injuries to both Junior Hoilett and David Dunn (surprise, surprise), mean Radosav Petrovic and Ruben Rochina start. After his heroics at Anfield, Mark Bunn continues in goal.

After that we’ve five 3pm fixtures, and no evening game allows us to be unfashionably on time for our New Year’s shindigs. This is my last post of 2011, so I wish you all a Happy New Year! See you in 2012!

Any news on the extent of Vermaelens injury? I had pretty much decided on Walters to Drenthe as Stoke have two away games next, but Verms injury may force me to reconsider and get Jags in.

Any help / advice much appreciated.

I think playing for Leverkusen and Bayern Munich really left a bitter taste for European soccer, which is why he went back to America at all. He has been accused of wanting to be a big fish in a little pond. That isn't fair. He wants to be the center of attention yes, but he doesn't want easy competition. Its why he leaps at the opportunity to play in the PL for Everton but continues to play in the MLS.

Donovan gets a good amount in US. He is the poster boy. His salary at everton would not match what he gets in US. But more importantly he is plays safe by playing in America. Look at dempsey, playing with the big boys.

he went to the prem and he did better on, lets be honest, a pretty mediocre team. He's tested himself and came out player of the month while he was there. That criticism is long since been debunked and laid to rest. But he's going to prove all the doubters wrong again. Like usual. Anyone forget the Algeria goal or the roofer against Slovenia?

The question asked of him was why is it that Donovan is so well known compared to Dempsey despite playing a smaller league. Freidal made a pretty fair criticism in saying he is more notorious because icons are more sponsored driven in soccer in the States, which is true considering the smaller slice of media attention it gets. What got him in trouble was an ending comment he made "So yea, i guess you could say he took the easy road".

Landon left his mom and sister at 16 to play for one of the most prestigious clubs in Germany. Freidal "took the easy road" when he quit the national team because he didn't want to put the effort in to beat out Howard.

All Im saying is , is get donovan in the prem full time. Play here for the next 3-4 years and go toe to toe with the big boys everyweek. Donovan is a good player which is why he should be playing here or europe. Forget money or weather. Just test yourself at the highest level consistently playing. Its what seperates the good players from the best players.

It means you can sit a specialist penalty taker on your bench, and throw him on if you get a late spot-kick.

I didn't realise you could make substitutes between the time the penalty is awarded and taken.

Not so sure about Kabouls position in that list, think her be higher up after his good sustained run of form.

Kaboul, King, Dawson and Gallas contending 2 spots

King is #1, Dawson probably #2, and judging from Applebonkers' (if memory serves me) analysis, Kaboul is probably 3rd choice (but also cover for right back if Walker needs a rest or drops his standards further)

With Verm out for 2-3 weeks he will definitely miss the next game, probably miss Swansea away and be back for Man U at home, which is not a fixture you want defenders in. I'm left with only 2 defenders I'm happy to play GW20. With this is mind and the DGW I'm thinking this is one of those rare cases where a 4 point hit for a defender is worth it. Have 3 Spurs and .2 off getting Baines so I think I'll be getting Jags and be left with 2m teasing me in the bank. Opinions?

I got rid now, but that has been the plan since I bought him - regardless of injury.

It was great to have him because you always felt he might score, but honestly losing Kompany for him was a massive error and one that has cost me a fair bit.

I brought him in after his big haul a few weeks back. Started well with a CS against Everton but 1 goal conceded every game since (bar today of course) and loads of near misses. I was thinking before today that I should have brought Kompany back instead of getting Verm.

Yeah I think I'm going to do Vermaelen to Baines for a 4 point hit. It's not ideal but if Verm is injured I haven't got much choice. Baines should at least repay the 4 point hit with the dgw.

I have to sell one of RVP or Rooney, this'll be fun.

I honestly don't think RVP will start at Fulham but I'm at my wits end with the fat one... guess I shouldn't be silly and keep the more expensive and less risky one but, eugh, meh. Fantasy football, eh? Bloody hell.
