As the second half of the season starts to kick in, Brendan Rodgers has turned to a familiar face to boost the Swansea midfield ranks. The acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson on loan from 1899 Hoffenheim until the end of the campaign reunites the duo, with Rodgers having previously managed the midfielder during his tenure as Reading boss.

The Icelandic international, voted Player of the Year by the Hoffenheim fans last term, missed much of his side’s pre-season and has subsequently failed to establish himself in the first-team, making a mere seven appearances this term. Given that the Bundesliga club paid in excess of £6.5m for his services, though, he’s clearly a highly-rated individual.

The idea, then, is to help Sigurdsson return to full fitness before he heads back to Germany at the end of the season. Priced at a very reasonable 5.0 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he has already made an impression. Coming off the bench last Sunday against Arsenal, he took less than twenty minutes of his debut to make a difference, setting up Danny Graham to fire home the winner in the 3-2 Liberty Stadium thriller.

The Statistics

Sigurdsson was handed trials at both Preston and Arsenal before signing on an Academy scholarship with Reading back in 2005. He made his debut for the Royals in the 2008-09 campaign but was farmed out on a couple of short-term loans that season, making a total of 20 appearances for Crewe and Shrewsbury, scoring 5 goals and providing a single assist.

He stayed at the Championship side for just over a couple of years, returning 19 goals and 10 assists in just 43 appearances before Hoffenheim snapped him up in August 2010. Sigurdsson went on to play 28 times in his first season in the German top-flight, scoring 9 times and producing 6 assists but his impact has been minimal at best this time round, with a single assist to his name.

The Prospects

If his cameo against the Gunners is indicative of what’s to come, Sigurdsson looks set to shine amidst Swansea’s passing game. Further analysis of the stats shows that Sigurdsson flourished in his only full season under Rodgers, producing 21 goals and 8 assists in 44 games. It’s no surprise, then, that the Swans boss couldn’t hide his delight upon completion of the move:

He is a terrific young player. When I went in to manage at Reading, he was a young player who had showed signs in pre-season, and I really liked him and stuck him in the team. He is a real threat with his shooting, and he understands the game – he is a clever boy. Our best chance was to get him on loan and it is a terrific move for the club. We will review it and look at it after the season finishes.

Sigurdsson will add a much-needed goal threat from the midfield area. Joe Allen, with 2 goals, is the only member of the Swansea central three to find the net this season and the new boy’s eye for goal means he’ll be played as the furthest forward of the trio in Rodgers’ 4-3-3. With an outstanding set-piece ability, he’s likely to be on corners and free-kicks too, as was illustrated in his brief cameo last weekend.

Whether Sigurdsson is ready for a start as he builds up his fitness is another matter entirely; it may well be Rodgers affords him game time from the bench until his stamina is ready for the frenetic pace of the Premier League. Rodgers has shown he has the intelligence and confidence to stick to his passing ethos and has a keen understanding of the type of player that makes his system click. His faith in Sigurdsson is absolute, suggesting the twenty-two year old could well help the Welsh side step up yet another level in the second half of the season.

With Brown having injury problems and Mignolet being cheaper, along with Rangel being more attacking, would it be totally crazy to do:

Vorm > Mignolet (to rotate with Sorensen)
    Brown > Rangel?

    I would also save 0.4m

It just seems wrong to transfer Vorm OUT, especially since I've had him since he was 4m

I guess I saw the assist threat of Rangel as being worth the extra, but you seem to disagree.

He averages a key pass every 120 minutes, which means like an average of 1 assist every 1200 minutes... suppose that's not so great!

that threat does exist, and if i planned on playing a swans defender more often than not over a say a 5-8 week stretch, then I would consider him. But its hard to imagine from now until march using a swan defender much. 4 of next 6 away. two home are chelsea and norwich who are hard to shut out. only 5 times combined have those two squads gone goalless this season in 42 matches.

When you put it like that...

I suppose Vorm is more likely to get points than Caulker and the Brown/Vorm combo seems more secure that the Mignolet/Caulker one, but I suppose the saved money is enough to convince me at the moment!

Just wondering how many around here have passed the 1st 2 rounds of qualifying in the 20% League? Scores needed were 65 or more in GW20 & 58 or more in GW21.

    Morning Guys.

    'The Adebayor Dilemma'

Not sure whether to stick or twist with ade...

    A) Keep Ade - This means I will play a 3-5-2 with a midfield of Moses, Bale, Silva, Demps & Sess. It also mean I have a FRESH ade for Wigan next week. Nice ! Downside I prefer to play 3-4-3, plus I wil lose value

    B) Flog Ade: But for who? No one stands out... yes, Fletcher, Morison etc - but they dont get the juices flowing, plus need to look at next week also.

What are peoples thoughts, espeically if options B on replacements for Ade??

    Cheers

Ade out is a bandwagon i aim not to jump on.. at 8 million he is the bargain of the season.. Main man upfront in a side pushin for the title, ensured of starts.. just cause he dint score in 3 games does'nt mean he's horrible all of a sudden.. i plan to keep him for the foreseeable even in my WC GW 24.. he'll offer value far behinf his price tag all season

Thats my thinking Keith, to sell pre-wigan not a good idea. Moses v QPR would be his sub.

Other strikers agaisnt good sides (RVP & Aguero) so it could be a lean scoring week in the Evs team.

IF i twist, and may chance on sturrudge. But the real ballsy shout of this week would be...

        Bellamy 😉 !!

Well, it had been my plan to keep Ade and play 3-5-2 this week then dump him in the GW23 wildcard massacre. But since he's done absolutely sod all for weeks now I see no particular reason why he should suddenly bestir himself against Wigan, even if he's had a jolly good rest.

For some bizarre reason I can't understand Darren Bent has been calling to me even though I don't like him, Villa are poor and their fixtures are nothing to write home about.

Last week I was searching for a replacement for Ba and Fletcher seemed the best bet. I'd pretty much made my mind up but changed to Sturridge at the last moment; he didn't play and now there are rumours of a bust-up with AVB or something. Fortunately Surman came to the rescue but if Sturridge also doesn't play this week I'll be right up Scheissgaze without a paddle, as they say. Although it totally goes against my better judgement I think Ade>Bent will be my transfer this week.

Defence v attack strategy regarding Citeh continued…

Now Silva, Richards and Kompany have all missed starts recently, so I’ve popped in Silva’s season PPG average when this is the case (e.g. v Sunderland) regarding himself. However, with Richards and Kompany, any hypothetical points reflect goals conceded (e.g. a score of 2 for Richards at Sunderland, 6 at Wigan).

Looking at the last 6 GWS:

    Hart, 6.6 – 8, 6, 6, 2, 8, 7 = 47
    Kompany, 6.6 – 6, 9, 8, 2, 6, 6 = 37
    Richards, 6.4 – 6, 6, 6, 2, 6, 6 = 32

    Total score: 116
    Total cost (PP): 19.6

    Kompany, 6.6 – 6, 9, 8, 2, 6, 6 = 37
    Silva, 10.3 – 11, 3, 3, 6, 9, 8 = 32
    Aguero, 11.1 – 1, 13, 2, 1, 8, 2 = 27

    Total score: 96
    Total cost (PP): 28.0

(Silva and Aguero total score alone: 59 Cost: 21.4)

One question. If someone asked if you’d buy a forward who had scored 5 goals in 6 at a maximum cost of 6.8, I’d imagine you’d think that player was a “Demba BArgain”?

Additionally, Kompany and Richards have 3 goals and 8 assists between them.

Which leads me on to this…

    Hart
    Richards Kompany Skrtel Agger Enrique
    Valencia Dempsey (vc) Sessegnon
    RVP (C) Fletcher

1.8 in the bank (ready for Ba)

    Bogdan Bale McLean Morison

MF. Apart from Silva, who’s missing? Walters and Sinclair can easily be accommodated too. Nani, VDV, Lamps, Mata, Ramires? Even if they were significantly cheaper they wouldn’t be worth much at the moment. None have the fixtures or form to suggest that is going to change in the foreseeable.

FW line. Ok, so no Aguero or Rooney. Both played Bolton and Wigan, respectively this week. Total score: 10 (after two dodgy assists). Total cost: 23.1

Morison and Fletcher were away at WBA and Spurs, respectively. Total score: 16. Total cost: 11.2

No way. Lack of captain choices and too heavily reliant on RVP to score big every week. Nice idea but the week City and Liverpol concede you will do very poorly. 17/42 clean sheets for them. I'd need at least 2/3 cleanies from both to even consider that team

Captaincies and cheap defenders are indeed important factors. But who's captain material? Silva isn't as you say yourself. Aguero often only plays 60 and is only a captaincy option at home without Dzeko or Balotelli, I think.

I'll just go and check the amount of double figures from Aguero recently...

Fixtures are picking up and the schedule of Champions League and BPL has been taking its toll on Aguero. Arsenal and City have good home/away rotation which means that I can captain him at home and RVP when he's away.

You've chosen to look at the last 6 weeks, which includes the only 2 blanks that City have recorded all season, and a run of 5 cleanies in 6 which they haven't come anywhere near approaching all season.

i like the idea and in terms of value it's hard to argue however here are some things that would put me off a triple up:
you're consciously robbing yourself of an attacking player from the most free-scoring team in the league. their fixtures from gw24 onwards are very juicy.
if aguero or silva suddenly explode you've then got to get rid of a man city defender first before you can get one of them.
we've all built up such high team values by now/ there aren't too many expensive players that look worth the investment leaving funds available if needed.
silva and aguero are captain choices in these juicy home games coming whilst these defenders and hart aren't. they're capable of the double figure scores so their captaincy will distort any value figures.
double up maybe, triple up no way. not for me unless there are clear big gun alternatives worth spending the money on instead. right now i can't see them and the likes of man utd and tottenham are simply going into even tougher spells at the same time as man city are going into easier spells.

      Hello fellow Lampard punter.

Good keepers and defence although I'd get Lindy for Vorm
No United player, I'd do Skrtel and Sess/Walters to Valencia and 4.5 defender.

Still looking at the Valencia option but not overly keen on weakening defence too much.

    Vorm | Ruddy
    Kompany | Enrique | Senderos | Simpson | Shotton

Thought about it but I don't think they rotate too well, e.g. they're playing ManU and Chelsea in GW23, and then Chelsea & ManC in GW28. I hate using regular subs on keepers when there are usually more attractive switches to be made.

Which 1 player would you bench this week between:

    Vermaelen, Shawcross, Raylor, Kelly?

I currently have Raylor, but afraid of attacking returns now he's oop and on set pieces.

Seriously? He's one of the most attacking defenders in the league.

Ok thanks for the replies. Most think I should play Raylor then. I suppose it'll have to be Kelly on the bench.

      Kelly.

None of them will keep a clean sheet, maybe Stoke...at best, why not take on Verm, when he is in such an attacking niche (pre-injury of course).

Thanks Manamongst. I think it'll have to be Kelly. No point in having Vermaelen if i'm not going to play him every week.

Who to bench this week from a front 8 of:
    Bale VDV Nani Walters Dempsey
    RVP Aguero Fletcher

I had planned to bench The Yak this week, but now I have Fletcher it's tougher...

Need a bit of help to decide on my last 2 defenders to rotate with the 3 I already have. Will most likely play 3 at the back for the next while as my front 8 is where most of my money is invested. 12.1m to spend. Any ideas?

    So far I have:
    Krul, Mignolet
    Kelly, Simpson, Shotton, ______, _______,
    Silva, Walters, Sessegnon, Bale, Dempsey
    Fletcher, Van Persie, Aguero

One should be a Man City defender, I think. I doubled on Fulham (Senderos), but you may not want to do that.

City defender plus Huth rotates quite nicely actually. Can't decide what City player to go for. Slightly tempted by the relative price of Clichy. Madness?

Not sure I'd bother rotating the CIty defender tbh.

I mean with those 2 in my back 5 I can get 3 guys with an easy enough match every GW for next the while. Obviously unless City are playing a top side the City guy will be starting.
