As the second half of the season starts to kick in, Brendan Rodgers has turned to a familiar face to boost the Swansea midfield ranks. The acquisition of Gylfi Sigurdsson on loan from 1899 Hoffenheim until the end of the campaign reunites the duo, with Rodgers having previously managed the midfielder during his tenure as Reading boss.

The Icelandic international, voted Player of the Year by the Hoffenheim fans last term, missed much of his side’s pre-season and has subsequently failed to establish himself in the first-team, making a mere seven appearances this term. Given that the Bundesliga club paid in excess of £6.5m for his services, though, he’s clearly a highly-rated individual.

The idea, then, is to help Sigurdsson return to full fitness before he heads back to Germany at the end of the season. Priced at a very reasonable 5.0 by Fantasy Premier League (FPL), he has already made an impression. Coming off the bench last Sunday against Arsenal, he took less than twenty minutes of his debut to make a difference, setting up Danny Graham to fire home the winner in the 3-2 Liberty Stadium thriller.

The Statistics

Sigurdsson was handed trials at both Preston and Arsenal before signing on an Academy scholarship with Reading back in 2005. He made his debut for the Royals in the 2008-09 campaign but was farmed out on a couple of short-term loans that season, making a total of 20 appearances for Crewe and Shrewsbury, scoring 5 goals and providing a single assist.

He stayed at the Championship side for just over a couple of years, returning 19 goals and 10 assists in just 43 appearances before Hoffenheim snapped him up in August 2010. Sigurdsson went on to play 28 times in his first season in the German top-flight, scoring 9 times and producing 6 assists but his impact has been minimal at best this time round, with a single assist to his name.

The Prospects

If his cameo against the Gunners is indicative of what’s to come, Sigurdsson looks set to shine amidst Swansea’s passing game. Further analysis of the stats shows that Sigurdsson flourished in his only full season under Rodgers, producing 21 goals and 8 assists in 44 games. It’s no surprise, then, that the Swans boss couldn’t hide his delight upon completion of the move:

He is a terrific young player. When I went in to manage at Reading, he was a young player who had showed signs in pre-season, and I really liked him and stuck him in the team. He is a real threat with his shooting, and he understands the game – he is a clever boy. Our best chance was to get him on loan and it is a terrific move for the club. We will review it and look at it after the season finishes.

Sigurdsson will add a much-needed goal threat from the midfield area. Joe Allen, with 2 goals, is the only member of the Swansea central three to find the net this season and the new boy’s eye for goal means he’ll be played as the furthest forward of the trio in Rodgers’ 4-3-3. With an outstanding set-piece ability, he’s likely to be on corners and free-kicks too, as was illustrated in his brief cameo last weekend.

Whether Sigurdsson is ready for a start as he builds up his fitness is another matter entirely; it may well be Rodgers affords him game time from the bench until his stamina is ready for the frenetic pace of the Premier League. Rodgers has shown he has the intelligence and confidence to stick to his passing ethos and has a keen understanding of the type of player that makes his system click. His faith in Sigurdsson is absolute, suggesting the twenty-two year old could well help the Welsh side step up yet another level in the second half of the season.

Currently have no Man U coverage (except evans.. but probably transferring him to QPR d)

Could do Mata > Valencia, Morison > Sturridge

Worth it? Or is Mata better coverage?

he needs to shut up and get on with it. Talking his way out the team really helps AVB solve his midfield issue by playing Ramires on the wing.

Two to play, three to bench (need at least one defender):
Richards, Valencia, Enrique, Bale and BAE
Currently I have it in that order with first two playing and last three my bench - right call?

It's a tough call but I would play Enrique over Valencia.

I can see City snuffing out Spurs by 1-0 or 2-0 so Bale on the bench could be the right call, although I will be playing him.

Itchy trigger finger, so just this second whipped out the WC. Feast your eyes on this team and tell me what you think:

    Krul (Vorm)

    Cahill, Shawcross, Simpson, Enrique, (Richards)

    Sessegnon, Walters, Silva, (Bale, McClean)

    Bellamy, Sturridge, RvP

No idea who to captain though, currently on Silva with RvP as VC.

Really not sure about Cahill, I would hold off for a bit and see how things pan out - lots of good defenders around. Swap him and Bellamy for Fletch and you are good to go. Any help above?

For 5.2 there aren't that many good defenders, especially not with his upside. That said I think it's advisable to make sure he's starting first.

Thinking of 5 quality mids, madness or should I spend the extra money on defence? Here’s the potential WC:

    —————————-

    Vorm / Sorensen

    Richards / Enrique / Evans / Simpson / Naylor

    Silva / Bale / Valencia / Dempsey / Sessengon

    Aguero / RVP / Fletcher

    —————————

Thoughts? 5 good mids overkill or looking good?

Not a fan of 5 very strong midfielders. I like the 3-4-3 every week with a cheapie 5th midfielder. This is even more so when you consider that Fletcher's stats are stronger away from home.

I am thinking 5 mids as well because I can afford it. Sure, it might lead to the odd points haul on my bench, but it saves me going back and forth between two mids with transfers. I think it is the bonus of picking Fletcher. You can afford an extra strong player, so why not take advantage of it?

Jones doesn't tempt me in the least right now. And Riise's stats are no better than Senderos or Kelly.

That being said, I went through the battle of ... isn't Dyer just about as good as my 5th mid?

          So maybe I shouldn't be trusted 🙂

good enough defense as is and gives you better rotation with mids/forwards. especially if someone gets hurt or something you wont need to take a hit or waste a transfer getting rid as you can just bench them with a strong sub playing in their place

Walters & Aguero. You know why.

Tough call in defence. Jose is nailed on in the league's best defence but fixtures go bad soon. We don't know about Cahill's game time and Chelsea haven't done well for clean sheets but he is cheap, scores goals and they have decent fixtures. Clichy is a good prospect for a cleanie but won't always play and doubling is a gamble.

Hi JK. I agree with Dog on Todd actually. A short term, pre WC punt on Dzeko is what I would do in your position. Mancini more-or-less stated that he would start Vs Spurs and he should do well in that one....followed by Everton who are simply pants pants pants and missing all their key defenders (apart from the over-priced Gallagher brother lookalike)

I've been giving up ciggies every year for five years....

Thing is, depends how many you smoke. 20 a day is probably too much. But me, I smoke maybe four a day Mon-Fri and maybe 10-12 if I'm having a beer

      Its all about balance

I love smoking the odd fag. If that means the difference between me living to 80 or 85 I don't think I care

Once you start going down the road of cutting out anything that could reduce your life expectancy, then you soon start fretting about loads of stuff that makes life worth living ie

      Going out on the beers
      Bacon sandwiches
      Contact sports.....

words aren't really a hard time.
if i drink a beer, eat a mars bar or drive next to you you don't go home smelling like a bonfire, with your eyes stinging and your lungs worse off then when you went out. that's a vital difference. if i jump up on the table, squat over your head and fart in your face all night it would be frowned upon, whilst if a smoker smokes next to you and smoke goes all over you and your face then it's fine. both are equally offensive, both are equally selfish.
up to you what you do just don't make other people's lives worse doing it. thanks to the smoking ban i have no issue with smokers, i don't agree with it, so what?

Get one of those electronic cigarette devices that turn the liquid to vapour. That may help. Expensive straight off the bat, but will save you cash and your health in the long run. Then ween yourself off that, as it will be easier.

Hi Optimus. I am a smoker. I'm 38 but have been off them 5 years in total out of the last 11....currently back on them.

It's really hard, but if you fail, don't beat yourself up about it. Just try again. The important thing is that you WANT to quit.

Best of luck....it can be done....I was off them for 3.5 years at one stage (don't ask).

I found the nicotine inhaler a great help....for the nicotine hit and also for the hand/ mouth reflex (especiallly when driving)....

The first 2/3 weeks are def the hardest...after that you're over the worst

Try snoose. Its small tea bags of tobacco. You have to import them from scandinavia
but you stick a small baggie in between your top lip and the gum and they give a great smoke free nicotine high

If you can't warm to Walters right now, you will never warm to him. His fixtures are on the up tick.

I prefer Walters, but Ramires is a contributing player on a better side (whose fixtures are quite nice after United). Penalties for Walters is a nice bonus. I don't suspect there is a huge difference between the two from an FPL perspective, though.

Arsenal defence is a mess yes but their home defensive record is good all season so warned off Welbz. Do wonder if Fletcher can keep up such good points at such a limited team. Dzeko - tempting but Spurs defence has improved and he's so frustrating!

Gerrard being 1 is a little surprising for me. Would have though Walters, Nani, Vorm, Silva, Taylor, Enrique would all be more common.. you can tell you all be on here having Gerrard!

2 years ago I would have jumped at getting Gerrard in this situation... is it close enough to the same player now?

Who knows, but's an easy swop to Nani, Silva, Dempsey etc if if fails. Worth a shouy imo, very low ownersip and of course has just signed up for life

Gerrard has scored twice in his three games back, unfortunately not the one where I bought him in for a hit and captained him! 🙄

It's one of the unwritten rules of FPL that the more you sacrifice for a player the less he will score

Surman > Sessegnon for a 4 point hit

Means benching Ben Arfa. Sessegnon may also be my captain choice.

Captain choice will be so important this week, I've been switching and changing all week so far and no doubt will be to the end of the GW.

Currently have captain as Walters with Dempsey VC.

Walters has been incredible at home this year and always delivers point, very consistent,Dempsey on the other hand is a little bit more inconsistent, it either seems to be a 2 point game or 10 point + game, which could come in handy if i captain him when he does deliver. Lots of other options in Aguero, RVP, Bale, Valencia and even McClean.. going by the captains poll i should go for RVP but i think there are and i have better options, thoughts would be appreciated people!
