Last week saw Newcastle make the first major foray into the January transfer market with the purchase of Papiss Demba Cisse from Bundesliga side SC Freiburg on a five-and-a-half year deal. The fee, thought to be in the region of £7.5m, sees Cisse link up with fellow Senegal international Demba Ba on Tyneside and affords Alan Pardew a lethal looking front pairing for the second half of the season…

With both players currently on international duty in the African Cup of Nations, Newcastle fans will have to wait a little longer to see the duo in action on Tyneside. Even if Senegal progress as far as the semi-finals – and the resultant final or third-place play-off- both will be back in time for the gameweek 26 home clash with Wolves at the very latest.

Cisse, having flown back from his country’s training camp in order to complete the deal, admitted the persistence of Alan Pardew played a big part in sealing the deal:

Newcastle have continually shown an interest in me. The time has come for me to show what I can do here now. I met Alan Pardew and I had a very good conversation about the future. I was very impressed by what he said and the plans for the club moving forward. The manager has shown a lot of trust in me by giving me the No 9 shirt here and now my objective is to repay that faith in me. I am very excited about the future.

The Statistics

The twenty-six year old began his career in his homeland with Douanes Dakar, scoring 23 goals in 26 games before catching the eye of French club Metz. Joining the Ligue 1 side in the 2005-06 season, he was quickly loaned out in order to gain more experience. Cisse headed off to AS Cherbourg, where he bagged 11 goals in 26 appearances.

Cisse returned to Metz the following season but, despite 32 games and 12 goals, he failed to convince and was, once again, farmed out to a fellow-French side, this time moving to LB Châteauroux on loan. He managed just 4 goals from 15 appearances before returning to his parent club for the start of the 2008-09 campaign. This time, he remained a first-team fixture for the next two and a half seasons, before SC Freiburg snapped him up halfway through 2009-10, with Cisse’s record for Metz standing at 35 goals from 92 games.

Cisse managed just one full season and a couple of half campaigns in the Bundesliga but was a major success. In total, he grabbed 37 goals from 65 games, a fantastic record despite plying his trade for one of the lesser clubs. Last season, only Mario Gomez scored more times in Germany’s top-flight; the Bayern man netted 28 times to Cisse’s 22. The Senegal international had already scored 9 times in 15 games this term, despite his club nestling in the relegation slots.

The Prospects

Let’s face it; Mike Ashley isn’t going to part with that sort of money for a bench-warmer. The fact that he’s been handed the iconic number 9 jersey sums up Pardew’s faith in Cisse, too; it’s pretty much a given the new boy has been brought in to partner Ba up top, with Pardew’s penchant for 4-4-2 affording him plenty opportunity to impress.

While Ba has proven to be one of the major success stories of the season, it’s obvious there’s an over-reliance on him to produce the goods; the former West Ham man has scored 15 goals, more than the rest of the Newcastle squad combined, with Leon Best’s 4 the second highest goal tally for the Magpies.

Cisse’s introduction should go a long way to remedying that. His pace, power and direct game should fit in with Pardew’s system, as the Magpies boss explained:

Ever since Andy Carroll left, Papiss was my first choice. He is a finisher with an already-established CV in the Bundesliga, where we have monitored him for the best part of two years. He’s a player who plays off the shoulder and wants to go in behind, but he’s got a little bit more to his game than that.

Newcastle have exceeded all expectations so far, sitting sixth in the league, despite scoring just 32 goals; the least of the top six clubs. With (WOL, SUN, NOR) all arriving at the Sports Direct Arena between gameweek 26-29, Cisse has been handed the perfect opportunity to get his career on Tyneside off to a flying start. Yet to be priced by Fantasy Premier League, he should come in around the 7.0 mark and, with his eye for goal, looks set to offer Fantasy managers a viable alternative to Ba up top as the season unfolds.

Good team. Huth is way overpriced compared to what he has delivered thus far, but I know everyone on here loves him. Also Siggy could be a nice choice, but I would have held off to see how he settles in first. Too many people have been burnt this year by just jumping the gun imo. But all in all, nice team.

Thanks for the input! I agree and am unsure about Huth. He has not been great this year, but felt I might need some Stoke cover. Enyone else to consider?

I'm thinking Siggurdsson because I want a cheap 5th midfielder as he is likely to be benched every week. Might go with Barfa or McClean?

        Have 0.6 in the bank.

Well I suppose seeing as he's bench fodder, Siggy is a good choice. For Huth, there's Shawcross or Shotton. I suppose if you have the money, you might as well spend it on Huth.

          Or you could do:
          Huth > Shotton
          Siggy > Walters

For Walter's juicy home games coming up.

Ok, doubling up on City, could work. I would never do it, but that cos I'm a Man Utd and I just couldn't bring myself to depend that heavily on a City CS, even though they'll probably get them. Would lose Naylor with Swans home fixtues, not sure doubling up on them is the best move, get Senderos instead. Cahill, we don't know ho much he'll play yet and thus it's risky, as is Enrique given Liverpool's run for the next 7 weeks or so, maybe get ShawX or Huth until GW30, then get Enrique back.

      Rest is fine.

I didn't say doubling up on City was a bad idea, just that I couldn't bring myself to do it, I've benched/sold players simply because they've had United. It may be madness, but that's me.

Nani to Dempsey or Valencia this week? Demps rising more and arguably has the better fixture but Tony V plays for United. Planning on playing my WC next GW but may yet be forced to do it this week. This is assuming I don't play it this week. Will probably want both players in my WC team anyway.

may take a 1 week punt on Keane, but I plan on having Bent for my WC team, he is there long-term (unlike Keane) is starting to hit some form, is on pens and bar City in GW25 has a good run of fixtures for 7 or 8 weeks.

Hedging your bets playing Vorm/Santon instead of doubling on either Swansea or Newcastle def then? I reckon Blackburn will definitely score, so you should play Caulker.

I have 7 of your front 8, the team definitely looks good this week 🙂

gw26-29 there is a little pocket which looks great for ba, cisse, sturridge, and the man city strikers. given that rvp is almost impossible to get rid of it could be a frustrating time constantly wanting what you can't have

Can only afford Skrtel to Kompany if I do BAE to Senderos, which I'm not doing this week, but could swap Skrtel for Richards this week.

It comes down to Richards vs Kompany and city def cover this week or next. What do you think?

It wasn't up to them to deem anything in the Rooney case. And Balotelli's was much worse anyway, kicking someone when they're on the floor is pretty low.

And let a player who attempted a deliberate eye gauge get away with it.

If anything they highlighted how much better our system is. A letter of support from the victim helped, doubt one was forthcoming in the incident(s) you're referring to.

Of course it wasn't, the player who sent a letter felt bad for Rooney and had nothing to lose considering he wasn't competing with him after the kick. He just boosted his image.

Hi, this is my front seven for the lineup for the week:

    Sess-Bale-Silva-Valencia-Dempsey
    Fletcher-RVP

    Bench: Crouch

Should I transfer out Crouch for someone in the price bracket 8.4 M? And if so , who for? 😛

I'd go Dzeko due to Balotelli's 4 game ban & great fixtures to boot.

I can't offer advice to someone who plays the fantasy game based on which team they support! I have 2 Arsenal, had 3 earlier in the season and I'm a Spurs fan. That said, I don't dislike Arsenal, hate gets you nowhere.

Current WC team, fancy Scheza due to Arsenal fixtures coming up, Verm being back to shore up the defence, and his BP's for doing naff all.

    Mignolet, Sczeszseszsesny
    Richards, Enrique, Kompany, Evans, Santon
    Valencia, Silva, Bale, Demps, Sess
    Ade RVP Welbeck
    Bank 0.1

Possibility to shift Scheza to Krul, leaving me 5.2 for a Santon replacement.

Please pick some holes if you wish, my WC's are usually spectacular failures.

Take out Sczsezny now for Krul and Ade for Aguero and Enrique for Senderos and Santon for Caulker.

3 City already, very happy with them. Ade will go soon if he doesn't perform, cross that bridge some other time.

Don't fancy Swansea anymore, see them falling away & never seen the appeal of Fulham defence apart from Hangeland. Stoke replacement like Shotton, if anyone. Anyone else you can think of? Ideally from a team that can keep CS! 🙂

Good luck benching someone every week from that front 8. That said I cant see where you could downgrade the front 8 and who to upgrade. Your team value is very sexy, good job.

It's awkward this week, but not so hard going forward. United, Sunderland & Spurs have tough fixtures coming up. I could bench Evans, Sess & Welbeck on tough weeks. I'd rather have points on the bench should I need them.

Didn't really see much, and wouldn't be surprised if he lost his place. Good point, 4.3 left for a replacement. Probably a Stoke defender, don't fancy Fulham at the back. Cheers Barry.
