The fixtures have had a good frisking and, ahead of Gameweek 23, our Watchlist rankings have been updated accordingly alongside this new data. Our mid-term choices over the next run of games can be found on your right hand toolbar – follow through for a quick round-up of the notable movers and shakers…

Goalkeepers

Baby steps are taken by the men between the sticks. Strong forthcoming fixtures promoted Joe Hart (money to spare) and Paddy Kenny (on a budget) to second and third place behind Tim Krul – we’re putting that five goal concession down as an aberration.

Following five starts in Manchester United’s last six Premier League fixtures, it’s hard to look beyond Anders Lindegaard given his tantalisingly low price. While the rotation fears ease in the United goal, they’ve escalated down at the Britannia. Thomas Sorensen drops in our rankings, below his Old Trafford compatriot, with a return for Asmir Begovic in the Stoke goal looking a very real possibility following Saturday’s events against West Brom.

Defenders

Following the completion of his four-match suspension, Vincent Kompany will return to the Man City fold next gameweek and finds himself back on top of the rankings without a moment’s hesitation. His upcoming schedule, coupled with greater starting role security, has him usurp the incumbent Micah Richards from our chart.

Goal threat from the back pushes Phil Bardsley up the rankings, as Sunderland’s rejuvenated defence becomes an investment prospect. The triumvirate of Jonny Evans, Ciaran Clark and Anton Ferdinand also make measured gains to offer a variety of choice at the cheaper end of the scale.

The tried and tested -and heavily owned- group of Ryan Taylor, Jose Enrique and Kyle Walker make the most noticeable of drops with rotation, form and fixtures conspiring to trigger a decline in their ranking.

Midfielders

Our first choice midfielders look hard to dislodge with each of Gareth Bale, Clint Dempsey, David Silva and Stephane Sessegnon battling and shuffling for positon in the top four right now. Antonio Valencia has returned to form to overshadow Nani – if any player will threaten that upper bracket monopoly any time soon then it’s likely to be the Ecuadorian.

James McClean continues to rise with form that belies his price tag, with Hatem Ben Arfa going a few steps better after his splash in an otherwise unsuccessful weekend for Newcastle.

Previous stalwarts, Rafael Van Der Vaart and Scott Sinclair, continue to slip down the rankings, with a heavy reliance on penalties, coupled with under performance from open play. The fixture list isn’t kind to either player over the coming weeks, while team-mates offer alternatives with Bale irresistible and Joe Allen and Gylfi Siggurdsson continuing to impresss.

Fordwards

Robin Van Persie and Sergio Aguero remain understandably firm at the top of the charts. Nipping at their heels, however, is Bobby Zamora, fresh from last week’s Watchlist Article and a barnstorming performance against the Magpies. Fixtures remain in his favour over the month ahead – although Dempsey’s popularity will surely dent his chances of investment.

Daniel Sturridge and Danny Graham take slight dips due to stuttering form and testing fixtures respectively, while Danny Welbeck’s consistent returns for just 6.6, has him jump into the middle of the pack as rotatation fears ease a little. Aston Villa strikers Darren Bent and Robbie Keane also rise due to their impressive form, while Hugo Rodallega sneaks in as a consideration.

Our subscribing members will soon be treated to a “Versus” article from Sir Paulos, which goes some way to explain Edin Dzeko’s return to favour – one Premier League goal since October really doesn’t tell the full story.

Really don't see the need to get rid of Nani & Rooney before Stoke at home (if fit). Might as well have given them one more chance, and I don't see the need to bring in City fpr the Everton game. Everton usually seem to raise their game for the bigger teams.

For GW24, great moves, but for this week, I don't like, I'm afraid.

Think a downgrade to Sig or Dyer is worthwhile. Sinclair isn't worth the extra monies for the odd penalty and the other 2 are more than capable of scoring as many if not more.

On Aguero: could become great player, great around the edge of the box and at creating chances for himself, has amazing close control... but when it comes to the bread and butter finishing he is found wanting. he has been really profligate over recent weeks and its rarely mentioned (mainly becasue Dzeko has gone back to his form of old). Aguero isn't an out and out striker, not a natural goal scorer, not the finished article by a long mile and not the fantasy gem people think....IMO.

he was incredible in first 3 or so months, no doubt, but has since dipped significantly.

1,13, 2,1,8,2,2 in last 7 games ..its fits and burst with him...he should be on a lot more with his goals/chances ratio...doesnt have the consistency of RVP and Ba, or even Holt and Graham to just get one chance in a game and score..he gets massive points hauls against poor teams when presented with 7 or 8 good chances.

Because the majority were away games, with his two blank home games against Arsenal and Spurs.

I'm not saying Aguero is a bad striker... far from it... he's clearly a very gifted player...

I just find all the talk of him as an essential frontline choice unrealistic when he's currently sitting behind Silva on points... for 11.1 mill i expect him to wipe the floor with Silvas returns or he's not living up to the price tag...

Yeah cos there are so many other strikers who wipe the floor with Silva's score right? Oh wait, there's only one with a higher score - rvp. It's got nothing to do with overall score for the entire season. It's got to do with the fact that there is now a run of games where he has every chance of scoring big.

Yes, value is very hard to quantify at those prices.

Aguero has had 6 months of prem footy - his first dark, wet winter away games in a new team, often playing support. He's still outscoring Rooney and has one of the 5 highest scores.

            RVP - 158 (2,6,5)
            Silva - 130 (9,8,6)
            Bale - 129 (3,5,7)
            Ba - 128 (12,0,0)
            KUN - 126 (8,2,2)

as for that, the penalty was awarded in the 75 minute, Aguero went off in 71st hence why Milner took it. As for what I said, it was Newcastle, not Norwich, Dzeko wasn't on when Aguero took it, but Milner was. In other words, Aguero is 2nd choice, so with Mario out he is now on pens.

Besides the fact that Aguero took a penalty against Newcastle when Milner was on the field, and Milner's only penalty this season was when Aguero was taken off already.

Why is Kompany the preferred option over Richards? I see Richards as the much more likely to add attacking points to the defensive points that he will share with Kompany. Any insight appreciated!

people say richards isnt a rotation risk but a couple of times when hes come back from an injury (sunderland away for example) hes started as sub. if it was kompany hed be rushed straight back in

I haven't had Kompany in my team all season and went with Richards a couple of times. Richards will continually be a great potential for assists but I agree it does come at a price. He does pick up a lot of niggling injuries late in games and Zabaleta is always there to cover for him. Kompany is the Chuck Norris of City and will play every minute.

OK Cheers folks. Looking at Richards history, he does seem to get a run of 4/5 games then miss one. Hmm, I'll aim for Kompany, but my WC budget is pretty stretched, so might have to give Richards a go anyway. When he goes assist/goal crazy, Ill have made enough off him to switch to Kompany.

And you only have to look at Richards to see how strong and powerful he is. Add to that how quick he is for his size. It's not easy to keep that tempo and intensity up without feeling the strain. He is carrying a lot of muscle and it's no surprise he gets these injuries. Granted they never keep him out for long but they do hinder him in playing 90 minutes every week.

QPR have got him on loan from AC milan, do we reckon he will slot straight into the team? (not sure who plays LB currently).

checked out his stats on wiki and playing for marseille he got 3/4 goals a season. With Sparky also interested in Onouha (4.6m - FPL) looks like QPR defence will improve.

    Decent option?

One wildcard can be played at any time. The January Wildcard can only be used after Gameweek 20 starts (2 Jan 11:30) until Gameweek 23 ends (4 Feb 11:30); as the January wildcard isn't available until after the Gameweek 20 deadline, the earliest these transfers will be active is Gameweek 21.

i see people benching sturridge and playing aguero

    sturridge last 5 - 9, 7, 2, 2, 2 = 22
    aguero last 5 - 2, 1, 8, 2, 2 = 15

    aguero last 5 away - 2, 5, 2, 1, 2 = 12
    sturridge last 5 away - 1, 7, 9, 7, 2 = 26

so sturridge is in better form yet it seems everyone wants aguero and is shipping sturridge

and before anyone gives the old argument about swanseas home form....

swansea have let in 4 in their last 5 home games
everton have let in 5 in their last 5 home games

I agree ... but it does take a very brave man to bench Aguero.

I think it comes down to £ - eg, can never bring myself to bench Baines when I have him even if I've got an alright prospect with a home fixture.

True - I suppose that begs the question is he worth having at over £11m.

I think his fortunes may change but perhaps not at Everton less Jagielka.

Points don't necessarily equal form. I'd argue Aguero is on great form, he has been unlucky(dzeko).
Secondly City score significantly more goals than Chelski, and have a far better fixture list.

Oh I missed that you meant specifically for this week. Well Swans are still a very good defence, regardless of the few goals they let in, add to that the horrific form of Chelsea, and it does make sense to me.
But I agree with you that you can't bench Studge based on his personal form(injury aside)

I wouldn't over McClean or Aguero, but I have Sess and Rooney, so it's a lot easier.

And, just until Ba returns, it's kind of nice having a strong 1st sub at this time of winter rotation.

Studge can play his way back into my team in that time or get my big boot to his arse if CHE continue to slide. He'd still be a keeper if not for Ba.

    _______Schwartzer (or Stockdale)__Lindegaard________

    __Evans___Vermaelen___Senderos___O'Shea___Santon__

    __Bale__Dempsey__Ben Arfa__Sessegnon__Valencia___

For the Richards / Kompany debate it's always viewed that Richards gets far more offensive points. However this season:
    Kompany: 2 goals, 2 assists, 9 BPs = 27pts
    Richards: 1 goal, 6 assists, 4 BPs = 28 pts

For those who have watched City this year, compared with last, Kompany is much more of a threat from set pieces as the ICT stats show that both Richards and Kompany have the same Threat score.
Another of Richards positive attributes is his crossing however he has delivered only 6 successful crosses this season and only 7 key passes. Clichy actually has the best stats in this aspect for City. Kompany has only 2 sucessful crosses all season but this could be expected from CB.

To sum up whilst Richards may look like you are getting more bang for your buck probably best to go for Kompany (Oh and Clichy looks surprisingly good in the stats).
