Earlier this month, Bolton’s Gary Cahill became Chelsea’s first signing of the winter transfer window. The 26-year-old defender’s £7 million move to London presents an intriguing prospect for Fantasy managers and sees one of the most highly-rated Premier League defenders moving from a perennial relegation contenders to the dizzy heights of Champions League contention.

Chelsea certainly required rearguard reinforcements. Just six clean sheets from 22 games this season is hardly top four form.  In their title winning 2009-10 season, the Blues managed 11 clean sheets by the same stage and finished with 18. Even last term, when cracks in the defence were exposed, Chelsea had notched up 10 clean sheets by Gameweek 22.

Statistics

The appeal of Cahill, who is priced at 5.2 after starting the season at 5.5, is his combination of strong defensive qualities with an added goal threat. Dominant in the air, during the 2010-11 season with Bolton, he was among the top Premier League defenders in terms of winning aerial battles and firing in efforts on goal – notching three strikes over his 36 games played. Since starting as a senior player at Aston Villa in 2004 he has scored 17 league goals, the bulk of these with Bolton.

Cahill has suffered a frustrating season. With injuries exposing the fragility of Bolton’s squad, clean sheets, the bread and butter of a defender, have come at a premium. Despite this, Cahill has maintained decent form. Crucially, he is amongst a select pack of defenders, a group that includes Blackburn’s Chris Samba and Arsenal’s second best striker Thomas Vermaelen, who regularly register efforts on goal each match, posing a potent threat at set-pieces.

Cahill has notched twice this season, most recently in Gameweek 20 away at Everton. His goal, together with a strong defensive display, earned him maximum bonus points. Bolton’s opening game of the season, away to QPR, also saw him rewarded with two bonus points, after scoring and keeping a rare clean sheet. With 13 points in the Gameweek, his highest of the season so far, we saw huge early FPL investment in Cahill. However, Bolton’s following run of fixtures (MCI, liv, MUN, NOR, ars, CHE) led to an unsurprising slump and, week by week, we’ve seen Cahill’s early ownership dwindle away.

Prospects

Back on the radar following his move to London, early adopters drafted Cahill into their Fantasy squad ahead of Chelsea’s Gameweek 22 clash with Norwich and were left disappointed. Not only was he left out of the starting line, Andre Villas-Boas failed to find room for him on the bench.

Despite this omission, the Chelsea boss has indicated Cahill will get his chance; a lack of training time with the team was the key factor sited and Villas-Boas was keen to stress his belief that Cahill has the ability to play his part…

He has good technical abilities which is important in the way we want to play and to implement our passing philosophy.

There’s every indication that Cahill’s chance will come very soon. There is speculation that he may even start for Chelsea in the QPR FA Cup game this weekend. If selected, it promises to be one of the most important games in his career; an impressive showing could see Cahill established early alongside Terry in defence.

On paper, Cahill looks a shoo-in to partner his fellow England international for the foreseeable future, but regular starts are far from guaranteed. Cahill faces stiff competition from the erratic but athletic David Luiz, with Branislav Ivanović also more than capable as a centre-half. Luiz, who has started the last five Premier League matches, won’t relinquish his starting role easily and, having kept a clean sheet at Carrow Road, Vilas-Boas may be resistant to immediate change. Chelsea have kept shut-outs in the last two matches with Luiz at the back, coincidentally around the time Cahill’s arrival was being hammered out.

Should Cahill impress and cement a starting role, there’s little doubt that he has the qualities to offer Fantasy potential. With Terry firing four goals from the back this term, Cahill will fancy his chances of exploiting Chelsea’s set-piece delivery to add to his own tally. Clean sheets will also be more plentiful and Cahill’s dominant style will likely see him amass clearances and blocks to tempt high EA Sports PPI scores and FPL bonus.

While hasty investment looks risky, once Cahill is established, his price tag will offer a relatively cheap and assured route to defensive returns within a top six side, with a strong goal threat thrown in. That looks a decidedly tempting proposition.

1 thing I think I'm doing for the rest of the season.... avoiding doubling up on a defence. It either kicks you in the balls or licks them better for you from the previous GW.

Now the challenge is to decide whether to have the keeper or the defender!

Was just thinking the same about Lindegaard & Evans. Evans will not get more than 6 points on a good day but for that price it's hard to ignore.

In fairness Evans has hit the bar/post and had a few cleared off the line this season, so there could be potential goal threat there

I'd probably prefer Evans instead and I'll probably change my mind by next week and indeed have both a keeper and defender from the same team! But today, I'm considering not going down that road.

When he trebled up on Liverpool defenders earlier in the season, i believe they got 5 clean sheets out of 6 games, something like that. 15 clean sheets from 3 players over 6 games, you would struggle to find another combination that would have got the same or better results.

Just because it didnt work for u, doesnt mean it doesnt work full stop!

It makes no sense taking a hit if you have to WC next wk anyway.
Either do two of the transfers or WC now.
I'd definately get Nani out as his price is likely to plummet and Dempsey has a strong home fixture. Regarding the other transfer I'd make it Clichy (or Lescott for goal threat)
City have nicer fixtures than Chelsea

    time for some seneganalysis:

when ba and pappis start playing together - will it not hurt the production of ba?
who plays further up - ba or pappis?
who is better in assists? who is better with headers?
do u invest in both? if you only choose one, is ba more likely to produce?
will they always play together or sometimes 1 on the bench and the likes of benarfa play behind a lone striker?

It may effect is scoring to a certain degree, but then you could flip it and say it will improve it as may get into more spaces due to defenders being pulled out of position. It's prob gonna take cisse a while to adapt to premier league anyway so he might not be thorwn straight in, or used for 90 mins every game. Considering they're virtually the same price, it would be stupid not to go for the proven Ba

It turned out with a few saying I had no sense and a few personal insults thrown in... day off school or college obviously for some of them.

For his price Ba will be in my team for GW24, where he should be rested and back in. If not, then I'll go Zamora and Ba can always come in later.

I have rooney aguero rvp up front so keeping rooney for stoke game (hopefully he's fit) then plan to do rooney > ba, leaving me with nearly 5m to invest somewhere else in team, prob to do McClean > Valencia. The downside is my front 8 will no doubt be identical to what most of the RMT's I've seen on here this week, well the midfield for definate:

          Silva Bale Dempsey Sess Valencia
          Aguero Ba RVP

Dont worry about that - this site represents a tiny % of fpl managers and theres plenty of teams out there with different midfields.
But regardless of that, when it gets to this stage of the season the biggest difference comes from getting your captain right!

I plan to invest in both, although I think I'm probably being very stupid. Something tells me that two senegalese boys living in the north east of england will strike up an immense rapport that will translate into an amazing on-pitch partnership. I'm probably wrong but I can live with that more than I could live with not doing it and being right.

I think the sensible thing to do is to go with Ba at first if you want one of them. Then we can evaluate Cisse again after every game.

My belief is that Cissé will play the furthest forward of the two, but it might also just be the case that they're both in equally attacking positions and will take turns to link up play. Teams don't HAVE to play one forward behind the other.

Regarding headers I'm fairly sure Ba is the stronger of the two. I've only done some standard research on Cisse but he looks to be a typical quick poacher who scores with his feet.

Kolarov, Zabeleta too I think. Personally when paying over 5m for a defender they have to be expected to start at least 90% of games when injury free. Thats the reason I wont be getting Cahill.

Not up til now he hasn't been but in theory (as seen by last season) offers much more attacking potential so could get a few goals when you least expect it.

but those extra attacking returns that people state as their reason for going with Huth>ShawX have been missing so far this season... leaving ShawX sitting above Huth in the Defender table for .5 less...

Have there been any signs of improvement from Huth in that area in recent games that make him a better pick atm?

I might get shot down for this but....

Not sure I get all the love for the generic WC team:
    Bale Silva Sess Valencia Dempsey
    RVP Aguero Ba

Don't get me wrong, all great prospects and I'll have most of them...but you have to bench at least one of them every week! That's a fair bit of cash and potentially points sat doing nothing.

Is it not better to have a cheap option (

Yea, I'll end up with 7 of the 8, but Surman instead of Valencia. He'll just sit on the bench every week and his points will be a bonus (got 10 from the bench the other week!). I'd just hate to look at my bench and see a guy worth 8m+ sat there!

              That is a concern.

But the other concern is when the 1 that you leave bags a couple of double figures in a row, when one of your 7 has a couple of inevitable 2's in a row.

The home/away rotation is pretty terrible on the 8.

Generally is the midfield is at home and strikers away and vice versa.

All those 8 are so attacking though the fixtures don't really matter. I think I could handle the off chance that my 4.4m player racks up a couple of good scores on the bench...not so much that my 8m player does!

I don't think there are any super easy games in the PL especially not for cheapie defenders who will be from the middle of the road teams. But if you are rotating the cheap and cheerful it's the usual suspects of Shotton/Caulker/Kelly/Senderos/Evans/Santon/Simpson & now Taiwo apparently

What do you class as uber cheap? Stoke, Newcastle, QPR and Fulham, Utd have good rotation so there are a few options:

      Shotton, Williamson, Kelly (super cheap)
Shotton, Simpson, Senderos/Evans (a bit more secure)
      Simpson, Taiwo, Evans

      etc...

Yeah something like that. Simpson is worth 4.2 to me so I imagine he will survive the cull. Jevans is cheap, good value so I'm looking at him too.

Perhaps Simpson/Brown rotation with Jevans in back up a lot of the time?

Simpson and Evans have a great rotation of good fixtures so i'd say them two for sure. Brown is an option but i don't like his home fixtures which is when you'd want to play him.

By uber cheap i assume u mean 4.0. So lets have a look. Caulker, Shotton and Kelly are the first 3 that spring to mind.
That combo gives u the following:

WBA, SUN/wba, NOR, SWA, WOL, avl, SWA, EVE, NOR, WOL, qpr, BLA, WIG, WOL, qpr, BOL

Not too bad. If you want better you could stretch to Newcastle defense (Santon or Williamson at 4.2)

Regardless of your opinions on whether you should double up on defence or not, if you were to do such a thing, which do you think is better?

    Nailed-on-ness = Bad K + Lescott
More attacking potential = Bad K + Clichy

Note: To my mind Clichy and Richards offer similar attacking potential, as well as similar game time, therefore regardless of stats Clichy should get the nod for price.

He does have more potential but not a huge amount more considering that Kompany is more a BP hoover and Richards has been outperforming himself considering the number of sucessful crosses and key passes he's actually put in this year.

Could see a team along the lines of:

      Krul
      Raylor, Santon, Simpson, Saylor/Williamson
      Cabaye, HBA, Silva, Nani, Bale
      Ba, RVP, Aguero

That team would be doing alright considering 8 Newcastle players lol.

A few might go overboard on players from certain teams, but after the 1st spanking that team received and the subsequent single figure GW points tally... they would look to rebalance things in a hurry...

But personally i would substitute the word 'interesting' for 'terrible'...

I've been tinkering with what my GW24 WC team might look like. How generic is this looking out of 10 (bare in mind that I've hardly been on here and have barely looked at any other WC teams)?

    Vorm, Mignolet
Richards, Evans, Senderos, Simpson, That New Guy at QPR
Silva, Bale, Valencia, Murphy (can't afford Dempsey), Buzaski / Bukake / Buzz Lightyear (that cheap QPR guy)
    RVP, Aguero, Ba

Have we reached the magic point of convergence when all teams become the same?

Oh a rare sighting of the Lesser Spotted Boomstick.

It's pretty generic, I was disappointed to see EVERYONE is going for Aguero, RVP and Ba, thought it was my cunning plan. I suppose the main thing that matters is that its irrelevant if its generic on here, its how generic is it in your minileague that matters.

By the way, nowt wrong with Danny Murphy - had him two weeks and he's got 5, 7 for me so far. He's a nice chap.

If you want to guarantee your places in the tournament, join twitter and send me a shout at @Attila_The_Bum then I can send you the start date etc as soon as I have it sorted. The last one (a 32 team tournament) filled up in about 10mins.

Right, signed up to Twitter and the first suggestion for someone to follow was Dermot O'Leary, closely followed by James Corden!

What kind of sick place is this Twitterverse?!

Its horrific. @jamsiep has a list of all the Scout regulars on his page though so he's worth a look.
Just a word of advice, DO NOT FOLLOW RIO FERDINAND! Or Joey Barton for that matter. Boring twonks.

Sir Paulos won it in fine style (the jammy git). I didnt get out of the group stages!

Good to hear you lads are up for it, I'll definitely keep you posted. Going to do a larger 64 team version. The good thing about this tournament is you are guaranteed to play at least three games, I normally get knocked out of the scoutcups first round!

                "LOWEST POINTS SCORE
A paltry 20 points scored in GW18 by Norway (managed by Jamsiep)"

😆 This has made my day.

I am up for the next one!

Most teams have similar combinations with the WC being played so close together... but as someone else pointed out earlier, the choices of a few thousand players on this site might not reflect the choices of the majority of players outside the realms of this forum...

and it will all change in a few weeks as the current 'dream midfield' goes off the boil..

Anybody still going going for Sigurdsson?
He's worth .4 than Dyer to me at the moment which I'm not sure I can justify. Also I have no qualms about benching Dyer every week I think GW25-27 I may start Siggy as I see more potential in him.

I was all set for Siggy, but I think he might be rotated. Allen & Britton are very unlikely to be dropped so that leaves Siggy & McEachran (and Augustien & Gower) for that last spot in the middle. Dyer is more secure and has been in good form of late.

Massive threat stats always intrigue me though. They signposted VdV going into that run earlier int he season (which I missed the first half of).
I agree he could be a rotation risk but I think Swansea may want to keep hold of him after this so they may be more inclined to play him regularly.

If he was pretty much nailed on I'd buy him straight away. He loves a shot, so I imagine he'd do very well, but I just don't think he is secure of starts though.
