Hatem Ben Arfa has yet to convince Alan Pardew he is worthy of a first-team start. Sir Alex Ferguson rues his decision to bench Javier Hernandez at Chelsea, Martin O’Neill vows to be patient with Wayne Bridge, while John Obi Mikel returns to training for Chelsea this morning:

Alan Pardew has admitted Hatem Ben Arfa faces a real battle to establish himself in the Newcastle first XI. The Frenchman found himself dropped for last Sunday’s home game against Villa, with Pardew opting for the work-rate of James Perch in midfield instead. With Papiss Demba Cisse joining Demba Ba up front, Ben Arfa’s preferred role, tucked in behind a lone forward, looks out of the question, given Pardew’s penchant for a 4-4-2. The Magpies boss said:

Hatem still hasn’t quite grasped, in my opinion, this Premier League. He’s got unbelievable talent, but he’s not used to it. He’s got to fight now to get in this team. He could still have a massive impact on this season, but we need to see him at his best. He isn’t out of the picture yet.

Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that Javier Hernandez may be set for an increase in game time, after his performance at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The Mexican has fallen behind Danny Welbeck in the pecking order this term and has started just two of United’s last eleven league matches but, having climbed off the bench to grab the equaliser at Chelsea, has given his manager plenty to mull over, as Ferguson admitted:

To be honest, I think I should have played Chicharito from the start. When he came on he had them on toast. He really put pressure on them with his movement and positional play. Danny Welbeck is a terrific player and he is going to be a top player, but when Chicharito came on it was a different game.

This seems to raise questions against Welbeck’s first-team prospects, then. He has started four of United’s last six up front and has been the preferred partner for Wayne Rooney up front, but Hernandez’s display and his manager’s subsequent comments raises question marks over his role over the new few gameweeks.

Martin O’Neill is keen to allow Wayne Bridge time to settle in at Sunderland before handing him a start. With the loan signing some way short of match fitness, the Black Cats boss is prepared to utilise Kieran Richardson at left-back until Bridge is ready to step up. O’Neill alluded to Bridge’s previous loan spell last term as the reason behind his thinking.

He is just settling down. I am mindful he was thrown in at the deep end last year. At West Ham it was thrust upon him. I would like him to see the surroundings a bit more. It was pleasing to get into the Norwich game, that was encouraging enough for him.

John Obi Mikel has returned to training for Chelsea today. The Nigerian has been sidelined since the gameweek 17 draw at Spurs, missing a run of games that have seen Andre Villas-Boas’ side pick up just two wins from seven. With the likes of Ramires injured, Frank Lampard a doubt, and Michael Essien still finding his feet since returning from long-term injury, Mikel -if he proves his fitness- will give the Blues a midfield boost ahead of Saturday’s trip to Everton.

FPL-wise, last night’s goalless draw at Anfield saw Glen Johnson yet again lead the way for bonus points. With Jose Enrique missing out with a hamstring problem, Johnson moved to left-back, with Martin Kelly stepping in on the other flank, and his display once more stood out in the EA SPORTS PPI. Johnson grabbed the maximum 3 for the fourth time this season and has now picked up 14, more than any Liverpool player. Clearly, his displays from full-back are ideal for the bonus system, with a combination of defensive work and crossing proving pivotal in his allocation, as the home side recorded their third clean sheet in the last four.

    Heres a conundrum

A keeper has 2.0% ownership, while a defender from the same team has 20%.

Given they only score clean sheets, which one would be the differential in terms of rising the Overall rank?

    (see what I am getting?)

he wont help you gain on the 20% of the players with the defender, because they score the exact same amount of points. only if the keeper starts scoring a lot more than the said defender, will the keeper become a true differential.

Surely if they both play every game your overall points are going to be the same ergo so is your rank - or am i missing something?

not exactly, if he can get that keeper and a defender who's more attacking then surely he can rise up the ranks.

3P is on the money. The keeper is not a differential. Despite his low ownership. If he scores a lot more points than his defender somehow, then he is, but thats another matter which might also backfire.

so this might go for several pairs of players ... depending on the circumstances

hart - kompany might be one
        vorm - rangel
sorenson - whoever is the cheapo at stoke everyone is getting

i guess if there is a conclusion here, differentials are more likely to be found in attack? or unless some low ownership defender starts going mental (e.g. baines)

no, they only score for clean sheets ... or for the sake of the argument, lets says the keeper scores as many points in saves, pen saves, and baps as the defender does in assist, goals and baps

the point is. the keeper is not - as far as my understanding goes anyway - a differential in terms of gaining on someone who has the same defender.

        see?

In the case of Kompany and Hart, Hart has scored more points due to being ever present, even though Kompany has scored two goals and two assists. Hence I swapped them over this week. It cost me 0.5m, but got most of that back with my other transfer Sorenson 4.3 and Kelly(Fulham one) 3.9.

Moving Suarez out when he only came back was a strange decision as either you got him last week or you kept him when he was out with the ban. Valencia is in top form, albeit so is Rooney. Ox is a rotation risk

Yeah that struck me too! He scored just 2 pens in the last game but you have to go back to Dec 10 to find another double digit score.
I don't consider that form. His fixtures are not great either. Having said that, he plays for ManU and is on pens, so he's never going to be THAT bad a pick.

What are people doing with Enrique, bad fixtures, missing gameweek 26 and injured (50% chance of playing).

My biggest problem is that I will probably want him back in gameweek 28/29 and will loss 0.5 on him. Plus with the Everton game called off he is due a double gameweek sometime.

    Vorm - Sorenson
    Simpson - Senderos - Shotton - Evans - Kompany
    Dempsey - Walters - Valencia - McClean - Bale
    RVP - Aguero - Sturridge

2FT, Sturridge > Ba is a given it seems?

Want to be rid of Walters & Shotton within the next few weeks, Aguero is giving me food for thought as well. Thinking Clark may be a worthwhile defensive option with the Villa's next 4 gw.

People should stop worrying about points on their bench. Ok it can lead to a frustrating "what if I had played them" feeling (but if you didn't have that player at all, they'd still have scored the points and you still wouldn't have got those points), but far better to be getting points from your bench players to cover the situations when they are needed for auto-subs. (Also far more likely to price rise if they are scoring points.)

Watching it I thought he really did try to pull out of the tackle at the end and that shows a lack of violent intent to me. There was nothing wrong with the opposing player, he made a meal of it. Thought they would acknowledge that.

Oh i agree completely, thought it was a terrible decision. I was just wondering if the FA can (or have in the past) reduced a ban from 3 games to 1 or 2 games. I was under the impression that they were there to simply decide whether it was a foul or not and thus whether it was a 3 game ban or no ban at all

what's the deal with appeals? to get rescinded does it need to be deemed not even a yellow? or does it have to just be deemed not a red.
for me huth's tackle is not a red but certainly worthy of a yellow. he gets no way near the ball, is careering in at full pelt and just because he pulls his foot out the tackle (making it not a red for me) doesn't stop him kneeing the guy instead. huth should have pulled out earlier if he wanted it to not even be a yellow, he left it far too late for the pace he was coming in at

Have you ever played in the snow Bonkers?

He's a big guy and his momentum (mass x velocity) is greater than most players and with that little friction, I'm reckoning it was impossible to pull out any quicker.

doesn't change anything though, just makes it more understandable/forgiveable. meyler clears the ball and then huth goes through him, almost making him do a front flip. for me that's a yellow due to reckless play. i agree the snow made it more reckless but that doesn't change the outcome.
also why i asked about the appeal process, if it simply has to not be deemed a red to be rescinded then it seems very odd that this wasn't rescinded, a knee is going to be more painful than dangerous. if it needs to be deemed not even worthy of a card to be rescinded then i think fair enough, even if that rule is a bit silly considering huth is banned for 3 games when a yellow would see him banned for none.
for the reason you say i think it makes him more ulucky but unlucky doesn't change the outcome, just as ivanovic found out on sunday

For Chelsea's sake you'd hope so. Luiz runs around like a headless chicken - doesnt suit the English game at all imo. If he wants to play like an attacking midfielder he should be put in midfield. He leaves gaps all over the place at the back.
