With last night’s tepid affair at Anfield bringing the gameweek to a close, we can now turn our attentions to the regular round-up. We take a look at Arsenal’s newest wing sensation, Swansea’s increased attacking potential and the dilemma surrounding Newcastle’s Senegalese front men…

The Player

While Gervinho lends his weight to Ivory Coast’s bid for the African Cup of Nations, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has dazzled on the Arsenal left. A double from the 5.8 priced midfielder in last Saturday’s 7-1 drubbing of Blackburn confirmed his potential as a mid-price Fantasy asset and suggests he will have a part to play in the second half of the season, as Arsene Wenger leads his side in the chase for fourth spot.

Handed his first start of the campaign in gameweek 22, the youngster had hinted at his attacking threat by providing an assist in the 2-1 home defeat by Man United and backed this up further against Steve Kean’s strugglers. Given that Theo Walcott has scored 3 all season, with Gervinho notching 4, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s eye for goal looks an intriguing prospect for Fantasy managers. Many agree, with 60,000 already drafting him in since his Emirates performance.

Wenger admitted only yesterday, however, that he is wary of over-using the winger and, with Gervinho back in time for the gameweek 26 clash against Spurs, it may well be that the Arsenal boss decides to rotate his wide men in order to prevent burn-out on the youngster’s behalf. This could mean less starts for both Gervinho and Walcott, as Wenger looks to afford Oxlade-Chamberlain Premier League experience.

With Gervinho priced at 8.9 and classified as a forward, and Walcott an 8.8 midfielder, Oxlade-Chamberlain would certainly offer a far cheaper alternative for Fantasy managers; with rotation highly likely, though, Wenger’s tinkering could yet make him a frustrating acquisition over the upcoming months, in spite of his obvious potential.

The Team

In the first half of Swansea’s campaign, it was all about the defensive assets. With six clean sheets in their first eight games at the Liberty Stadium, the back-four and Michel Vorm proved exceptional value, with the Dutchman’s extra save points and penalty heroics seeing his price rocket. The Welsh club’s dire away form -just three points gained in their first seven- made their Fantasy options easy to bench whenever they took to the road.

The last few gameweeks have seen a turnaround in fortunes, however. Swansea have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last four at the Liberty Stadium, with Vorm and company becoming less of a home banker as the season unfolds. On the road, in comparison, two wins in the last three suggest Brendan Rodgers’ tactics are gradually beginning to bear fruit away from home, too.

Gylfi Sigurdsson, in particular, is showing a real consistency of performance that belies his 5.0 price tag. The on loan star has produced attacking returns in three of his four appearances, averaging 6.25 per game so far. With set-pieces also factored in, the Icelandic midfielder is flourishing under former boss Rodgers and also seems to be bringing the best out in Danny Graham.

Since stepping onto the pitch as a sub in the 3-2 win over Arsenal, Sigurdsson has provided 3 assists for the Swans- Graham has benefitted twice, netting winners against the Gunners and, last week, West Brom at the Hawthorns. Priced at 4.8, and playing in a side with just one defeat in their last seven, Graham is clearly capable at this level, having netted 8 times already this term and, while the back-line has seen a reduction in returns, he continues to offer Fantasy managers a strong consistency up front, home or away.

The Talking Point

An injury to Leon Best at the Sports Direct Arena on Sunday gave Fantasy managers plenty to consider. On came Papiss Demba Cisse for his Premier League debut and the former Freiburg man lived up to the hype, firing home a brilliant winner to seal the three points for Newcastle. With Demba Ba netting upon his return from international duty, it’s clear we have something of a Fantasy quandary on our hands.

With 16 goals to his name and a Fantasy haul of 137 points –just two less than Sergio Aguero- Ba has been a mid-price phenomenon this term. Priced at 7.7, he’s already risen by 0.4 since his return from the African Cup of Nations and nearly 90,000 Fantasy managers have drafted him in since the Villa match. His proven track record in the Premier League, in addition to spot-kick duties, is currently making Ba the overwhelming Fantasy managers’ favourite of the Newcastle front pair.

Priced at 7.0, and owned by just 0.5% of Fantasy managers, Cisse seems a real eye-catching differential, though. He will play more advanced than Ba in the front two, sitting on the shoulder of the last defender while his compatriot drops slightly deeper and gets more involved in the play. Cisse’s eye for goal and willingness to fire off attempts suggests he is likely to have more efforts than Ba and, while this could perhaps produce some explosive returns, it could also work against him in terms of bonus. A few wayward shots, as we saw on Sunday, when combined with Ba’s defensive work, saw Cisse fail to pick up any bonus, while Ba walked away with the maximum allocation.

There’s no reason to believe Cisse’s arrival will be detrimental to Ba. If anything, Cisse’s finishing could help boost Ba’s assist tally- he currently has just 4 but, playing alongside a goalscorer of such repute will surely increase his chances. Ba will still get his opportunities, as we witnessed on Sunday, and providing he remains as clinical, should continue to hit the net with regularity.

Best’s injury certainly lessens the competition for places up front at Newcastle and will allow the pair to strike up an understanding at club level over the next few matches. With Wolves, Sunderland and Norwich rolling up to Tyneside in the next five gameweeks, Ba and Cisse seem set for an intriguing shoot-out which, given their respective abilities, could prove equally beneficial to both.

My query was just really based on the cheapest way into Swanseas defence, not sure any of them show any real attacking potential.

Rangel has attacking points in him. I'm convinced. Caulker and Taylor are great picks, but at this stage, to get a differential, I'm happy to spend that bit more for a route in.

Looking at Swansea's fixtures - I'd need some promise of attacking returns to play a Swans defender at Stoke, Wigan and Fulham - Caulker wouldn't give me that.

Seriously cannot believe that decision, do the people who decide have to provide Stoke with a written explanation? That is complete bullsh*t imo, he barely touched him and pulled out of the challenge. I suspect some of these decisions are not to undermine the referee's.

Indeed, throw into the mix the fact that Atkinson is card happy and that the conditions were possibly the worst in any Premier League game this season and I would have thought there was every justification for rescinding it.

Yeah, gambles work every once in a while.
This was a pretty good week to gamble on with City, Arsenal at home
do it every week and see where you end up.

Richards is away at Villa - unlikely clean sheet V Bent and Keane
Siggy may be a good call but better than Silva? Villan cant keep clean sheets
Rooney is playing V Liverpool, the best defence in the league.....

Advise him any way you want, I'd keep the points, they're hard earned in the first place.

Ok folks I'm keeping this debate going. Am looking to fund moves from Gerbil to Ba next week and Aguero to Rooney in GW28, in order to do so I need to free up some money in my mid McLean is that cheap he is out of the equation. This leaves me with losing one of Dempsey, Bale, Silva or Valencia. So the question is, is Silva really worth 9.5-10.5 million for the odd DDS and a few 6s or 7s, or can one replace him with Yaya for 2-3 million less?

Alternatively I could drop Valencia and draft in Siggy, but I'd then be left with only Rooney and Evans as United coverage from GW28, but one does have to factor in that Nani and Young are fit/nearly fit and this (along with Park and the return of Cleverley and Anderson may impact on Valencia's game time and do you really want an 8 million rotation risk?

You could probably cash in on Dempsey in a few weeks, plenty of decent options for good prices.

but I'd want Clint GW27 at home to Wolves, I'm looking at GW26. I suppose I could lose Tony V then draft him back in 2 weeks later (I only got him in this week so I wouldn't lose anything getting him back)

I don't think Valencia is indispensible, put it that way.

My plan was to eventually double up on Utd in defence, with Linde and Evans, and draft in Rooney up top, but Linde getting injured put paid to that for the time being as I'm not convinced he will regain the number 1 spot if De Gea does ok in the next few weeks.

that is also my thinking, like I said he's more of a rotation risk now IMO, especially when compared to Silva, Bale or Clint who I feel may more indispensable as they are absolutely nailed on, 2 of capable of huge hauls and Silva will always get you something.

Are people planning to ride Aguero all the way until the end of the season now?

I know he scores big in home games, but he's not been as consistent lately and looks to me like he could be tiring a little, so I'm thinking of jumping off in a few weeks time.

I think most people are planning Aguero ➡ Rooney in GW28, those that have both and RvP will either keep him or else bring Ba in I would imagine.

Aguero, RVP and Ba are my season keepers, barring any injuries. I just don't trust Rooney anymore...although I can see a Aguero-Rooney move feasible if Wazza comes to form.

    Huth Options.

Evans - Cheap, want him eventually anyway, allows me to get Ba, even if he carries on rising.

Bosingwa - Great fixtures, attacking threat. Rotation? Means i'll have to get Cisse over Ba, which might not be a bad thing.

    Caulker - Cheap.

      Posted already

Best defender up to 4.8m. I would keep him at least 5 GW’s, so no short term punts please.
      Options:

      A) Jevans – cheap utd defender, not good enough fixtures and could be rotated. Still seems like good value even with the benching now and then,
      B) Bardsley – good attacking threat, bad fixtures but that didn’t stop them to keep CS’s and before,
      C) Caulker – very fond of the lad, looks like Swa bad fixtures passed, so I could keep him for longer,. Already have Vorm so that means doubling.
      D) Kelly – cheap, cheaper then Senderos who is injury doubt. Already have Senderos so that means doubling and looks like Ful ain’t keeping CS’s. Maybe with Schwarzi back they will improve their defensive form,
      E) Double on New, cause I already have Simpson, but there CS’s looks like impossible to predict.
      F) Somebody else

      Thoughts please,
I think this will help to many lads looking for defensive transfer,

      Cheers to all

Evans should be in every squad that doesnt have a united defender or keeper, they will keep loads of clean sheets from now to season end
Bardsley's a good choice, bit of a gamble with fixtures tough but 3 clean sheets in nxt 6 is certainly possible.
Rangel before Caulker. More attacking threat and differential.
Kelly a great cheap option for the short term
Wouldnt double on Newcastle, just dont trust them enough. With Schwarzer back I'd prefer to double on Fulham for some of their upcoming home games

have been debating this exact question since Saturday. The only alternative that I can see to Silva is Yaya, but has yet to display Silva's consistency of points (but you do wonder if that makes him worth 10 million)

Valencia has been performing as of late but Nani and Young are back, Park is around and when United's central players return Giggs could be pushed wide left.

In addition Valencia has not missed a game for 10 weeks and has played 90 minutes in all but 1 (plus 90 in the FA cup) He looked a little tired v Chelsea and it wouldn't surprise me if he was rested soon.

Plus beyond Rooney and Evra no United player is nailed on, and do you want to spend 8 million + on a rotation risk. Valencia ➡ Gylfi is my current plan, but if Yaya can show me something then I may consider him over Silva.

      Silva, yes you're mad

Valencia, not so much. He has a tough fox this wk and Norwich seems like the kind of game Fergie will play Nani and Young in just to have Valencia fresh for the hardest shift of his life V Bale the following week - that'll be some battle by the way!

This is why I'll prob do Val - Sig or McClean nxt wk leaving funds for Rooney in gw 28

I expect City to run riot V Bol and Black so keep Silva at least until after that...

    Front 8
    Walters Bale Silva Demps Sess
    RVP Aguero Cisse(qpr)

    1. Save transfer this week and then do Walters Cisse > Surman Ba
    2. Walters > Siggy this week
    3. Cisse > Yakubu this week
    4. Walters > Gylfi this wk and then Cisse > Ba next week

m bit inclined towards 1 as i think glyfi ba both are not needed coz then i'll have the dilemna of who to bench..Surman has some good home fixtures coming up in wk28 onwards and i think his value also enables me to change aguero to rooney later this season..

Anyone else having a captaincy headache this week?

Three candidates: Dempsey, Bale & RVP

Sunderland keeping things very tight recently and are at home but Arsenal going mad last week so will be confident. The Ox and Walcott will surely provide Robin a few chances. But they couldn't break through away to Bolton.

Dempsey seems a good shout but can you rely on him? His hatrick was slightly out of the blue. Stoke also very inconsistent. Will they turn up or not? Will Dempsey playing up front on his own diminish his returns? My instinct says no.

Spurs looked out of sorts last night but a draw is a decent result. Newcastle will be hard to break down but they're not infallible at the back. For me the key is Lennon. If he's fit Bale can get quick distribution and more goal mouth action.

Personally I'm leaning towards Dempsey. What are you guys doing?

Its gameweeks like these that make me love this game... 109 points and I'm back in the hunt for my mini league... Now the gloating is over, who should I take Ben Arfa out for?
3.1 in the bank, the rest of my midfield is:
    McClean Bale Valencia Walcott

Was thinking Ireland, due to Villas recent goalscoring form and as something a bit different. Wouldnt mind keeping the 3.1 in the bank to upgrade Dzeko to Aguero once Balotelli is back..

    Team for the GW:

    Vorm (Krul)
    Richards, BAE, Evans (Santon, Caulker)
    Silva, Bale, Dempsey, Sessegnon (Reo-Coker)
    RVP, Aguero, Fletcher

    1 FT, 1.5 bank

Should I save my transfer? The potential weak point I can see is Fletch..

Too much swansea this week with Vorm/Rangel and Siggy? Sessegnon a keeper over the next weeks? If so, play him this weekend over Ba?
