Barrel-chested journeyman Grant Holt was hotly tipped for success at the start of the season after his 21 goal haul helped secure Norwich City’s promotion to the Premier League. For some, though, doubts lingered as to whether the 30-year-old striker, who made his name at clubs such as Barrow, Rochdale and Sheffield Wednesday, could make the step up to the top-flight.

Holt’s opening to the campaign was positive. Starting all of the Canaries’ first four fixtures, there were flashes that his lower league goal scoring prowess could be replicated in the highest tier of English football, as he netted away to Chelsea in Gameweek 3.

Gameweek 5 brought a turnaround in fortunes, however. Holt began to find himself all-too-often warming the bench, as Paul Lambert increasingly turned to Steve Morison to supply the team’s goals. Throughout the autumn, Holt rarely played a full 90 minutes, with 20 to 30 minute substitute appearances becoming a common occurrence.

Nevertheless, this seasoned pro is clearly not one to let his head drop and whenever he was given playing time, Holt offered Lambert a reminder of his attacking potential. He climbed off the bench to net against Liverpool and Blackburn in Gameweeks 9 and 10 and, having replicated this feat in the Gameweek 13 win over QPR, many had suspected Holt’s role as impact sub was more suited to his playing style.

The past few months have put paid to that theory, however. Holt has started ten of Norwich’s last twelve and, as the season unfolds, has re-established himself as Lambert’s first-choice frontman once again, with Morison afforded just 25 minutes in the past three gameweeks, in comparison.

A recent run of games has included a Gameweek 25 brace away at Swansea, a feat that earned Holt maximum bonus points and returned his second double-digit haul of the season. In Gameweek 26 he continued to punish the Premier League’s top teams, notching in the 2-1 home loss to Manchester United. Already this week, Holt’s exploits have earned more than 8,500 transfers in, with a price rise likely within days.

With a return of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 98 points – including 10 goals and 13 bonus points- Holt is now the highest-scoring Fantasy asset in the Norwich squad. Priced at 5.1m (following a 0.4m drop since the start of the season) he is looking like the best source of attacking investment for those looking to tap into the Canaries favourable run of fixtures over the next six weeks (sto, WIG, new, WOL, ful, EVE).

Amongst all strikers, he is joint-top with Swansea’s Danny Graham for “Value” and, in terms of points accrued, Holt is eighth, above the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Yakubu and Steven Fletcher. With an ownership of just 3.6 per cent, he could be that budget differential Fantasy managers are looking for as Lambert looks to secure his side’s place in the crucial final third of the campaign.

good article! however, with forward slots so rare, and with rooni, RVP, aguero, ba, ADE, suarez all fighting for the same three spots, not to mention cheap midfielders in abundance, hard to see a place for holt in the squad.

    Friedel Mignolet

    Bale Valencia Dempsey Yaya McClean
    RVP Rooney Suarez
    0.5

Would mean no City def but I think Enrique could get similar returns for the rest of the season.

Stoke have conceded just 14 goals at home all season, Sunderland just conceded 4 to West brom and the tyne wear derby is usually full of goals, having said that if you require the cash then do it.

    FFS UCL Group D – GW26

    Ajax
    points: 53 + 4 = 57
    transfers: 1
    captain: Kun (Ba)

    Lyon
    points: 56
    transfers: 1
    captain: Kun (Ba)

The narrowest of home wins for Daniel’s Ajax here. Both team’s Man City picks scored well. Neither’s Suderland ones did. Shawcross for Lyon, Simpson for Ajax, there were close battles all over the pitch. Losing manager gad will know not to blame himself, but seeing both Kelly and Shotton on his bench must be searing those 16 points into the backs of his retinas. It should be emphasised that this was a high scoring game which saw both managers rise in the rankings and get lovely green arrows. Ummmm, green arrrows…

    Dinamo Zagreb
    points: 51 + 4 = 55
    transfers: 1
    captain: Kun (Bale)

    Real Madrid
    points: 44
    transfers: 1
    captain: Ba (RVP)

Those tough artificial pitches, eh? Billowing Russian winters, ah? Start of their season, oh? Bizzle’s Madrid will having been bracing themselves for a tough encounter and they were not disappointed. Johnny Englander, doing what so many of his compatriots were too scared to do and leading madcap team Dinamo into UCL success. They did the simple things well, scoring from all over the pitch. Even with a rotten Vorm / Lindy combo, the rest of the boys chucked in and never gave it up. Strength, Determination, Pooower, they had enough in their legs to eviscerate Bizzle’s top seeds Madrid. Both teams fielded Zamora for a bit of flair but it was the Man city undifferential combo that won it for Johnny, with a strong captain choice repaying his faith. Real simply had no reply to Aguero and Silva’s 13 point performance. Sure, injuries were mounting for Bizzle, but perhaps Big Jon Walters
isn’t the answer at this level?

Sorry for the repost, but this will be me sorted for the next 5-6 weeks:

    THE PLAN

    Current Team:
    Hart | Krul
    Richards Evans Santon Caulker Kelly
    Silva Dempsey Bale Sess McClean
    Papiss RVP Sturridge
    +3.7m

    TRANSFERS
    GW28: Richards -> Skrtel, Sess -> Miyaichi, Sturridge -> Rooney (-4pts)
    GW30: Dempsey -> Valencia
    GW31: Krul -> Bogdan, Santon -> Kompany

    GW31 Team:
    Hart | Bogdan
    Kompany Evans Skrtel Caulker Kelly
    Silva Valencia Bale McClean Miyaichi
    Papiss RVP Rooney

    Good plan? Any suggestions?

Yup, he is on loan. Will make Drenthe likely to play against Spurs. I agree Pienaar would have been the best option, shame he can't play both games.

Most people seem to think he might not play both games, due to fitness/injury concerns was the original consensus.

He makes more sense than any Liverpool midfielders though.

I'm not convinced on Liverpool clean sheets if just bringing in for the DGW but if planning on keeping them longer term then it makes sense.

Ah see above he's ineligible anyway, that wasn't what was said originally as people were talking about Drenthe "maybe" getting some gametime.

It did cross my mind but he's quite pricey, unlikely to start both, and the fixtures aren't great. So no pienaar, but Skrtel is a good buy for the rest of the season. Two Liverpool defenders is overkill in my opinion unless one is Johnson. That would allow a straight Johnson -> Kompany swap in a few weeks.

Skrtel is quite solid, could get a goal or bonus points. Liverpool are a good team, so would expect returns. Doubling up is always risky but could bring good rewards, i'll keep it in mind at least.

Holt appeals, but think I have to go with Porgrebnyak.

Means I can rest easy getting rid of Dempsey for Nani.

    This sound okay

    Krul, Lindegaard
Skertel, Cahill, J Evans, Taiwo, Kelly
    Silva, Bale, Nani, Mata, Sess
    RVP, Ba, Prog

Looks good to me. I'd start making plans to get rid of Lindegaard. Maybe downgrade your heavy midfield, sess->mcClean to upgrade Lindegaard?

I think Mclean's had his big points hauls, Sess still playing up front so much more potential.

Think Lindegaard will still get games in the league and Krul's fixtures aren't that bad until the end of the season home or away, so thinking for the sake of a 4 point hit of "wasted" transfer, I'll just leave the rotation risk.

If I was on wildcard I would be getting rid though.

I was thinking of doing Shawcross>Enrique, Richards>Skrtel and Aguero>Rooney for gw 28. It would be a 4 point hit. I could get Kompany for gw 31 instead of Skrtel. What do you think?

Champions League Group B Matchday 2 Preview

CSKA Moscow (CatMac) V Internazionale (JMS)
First up, the two group favourites meet in Moscow in a clash both will be desperate to win after getting off to poor starts against lower ranked managers. Ending the week with no points from the opening two matches is unthinkable for either team so expect both to send out attacking line-ups. Both teams scored 43 points last week so there is nothing to choose between them in terms of form and CSKA will be hoping the freezing Moscow weather and 4 point home advantage are enough to tip the balance in their favour.

    Injury / Team News
CSKA - With Vorm expected to recover from the stomach bug which saw him benched last week and Enrique available for selection again CSKA should have a full squad to choose from this week with both Kelly and Van Persie likely to recover from minor knocks. A clearly furious CatMac looks set to shake things up following last week’s defeat with several players facing being dropped and rumours flying that Ba is set to be stripped of the captaincy with Aguero looking the most likely beneficiary.
Internazionale - Doubts remain about the manager’s confidence in Gael Clichy and despite Assou-Ekotto’s introduction from the bench having no impact last week, with £2.1m to play with it looks like Clichy’s days at Inter are numbered. JMS has remained tight-lipped over speculation linking him to a move for Martin Skrtel, but Inter scouts are known to have been present at recent Liverpool games. Much may rest on the Tyne-Wear derby as JMS has to decide whether to field all 3 of his Toon players in this must win match.

    Predicted Line Ups
CSKA Moscow - Vorm / Shawcross Kelly Santon / Bale Silva Dempsey Walters / Aguero Ba Van Persie
Internazionale - Krul / Clichy Kelly Williamson / Bale Silva Dempsey Sigurdsson / Aguero Ba Van Persie

    Match Verdict - Home win

    Trabzonspor (GreenWindmill) V Lille (Chris_White)
Lille travel to Trabzonspor on top of Group B following a comfortable home win over CSKA but will expect to find things a little less comfortable in the hostile Turkish atmosphere. Both teams come into this game off the back of upsets and Trabzonspor will certainly have their tails up following a successful trip to the San Siro. With both teams boasting 100% records something has to give and this looks certain to be one to watch.

    Injury / Team News
Trabzonspor - After packing the midfield away to Inter, GreenWindmill is expected to revert to his preferred 3-4-3 formation at home and bring Yakubu back into the starting line-up at the expense of Moses. Having impressed off the bench last week, Kelly could be handed only his third start since signing back in mid-January but it remains to be seen whether Richards keeps his place. With 2 free transfers, a wildcard and £2.6m at his disposal it seems unlikely that GreenWindmill will go into this match with the same 15 as travelled to Italy.
Lille - Chris_White is unlikely to make wholesale changes to the team which impressed so much last week, although Kelly, Sigurdsson and McAuley are all pushing for starts. Doubts remain over the form of Taarabt and the manager’s patience must be wearing thin following a series of non-performances from Richards. With transfer funds available it is surely only a matter of time before Chris wields the axe on some of his underperforming stars.

    Predicted Line Ups
Trabzonspor - Kenny / Shawcross Kelly Richards / Bale Silva Dempsey Sigurdsson / Aguero Yakubu Van Persie
Lille - Krul / Simpson Kelly Richards / Bale Silva Dempsey Taarabt / Aguero Ba Van Persie

    Match Verdict - Away win

Very true. I see an upset coming in this group in as much as it is very likely one of the 2 higher ranked players will be dropping out.

Knowing my abysmal record in H2H's it could well be me. Still it wont be without a fight though. Great stuff 🙂

From a purely selfish point of view, obviously I hope I qualify comfortably but I would really like it if the group was still wide open going into the last gameweek. We could easily have two teams on 6 points playing two teams on 9 points in the last game!

    Kompany > Enrique
    Wellbeck > Rooney

But need to free up around 0.4 or 0.5 in cash

    (current price)
    Simpson (4.3) > 3.9 defender? (suggestions)
Other that can be moved Bale (9.1), Demps (8.8) Silva (10.4)

I already have Caulker and Kelly so looking for someone at 3.9 who basically plays and can rotate in if needed.

0.4m will give me just enough for the transfer above as long as there are no major price rises on enrique/rooney
