Across the chest of Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel’s heavily tattooed body is the Latin slogan, “veni, vidi, vici,” which roughly translates as “I came, I saw, I conquered.” It is a philosophy that typifies his performances at either end of the pitch, with the Slovakian international building up a solid reputation as a fearless defender who offers an added goal threat.

Signed by Rafa Benitez in January 2008 from Zenit Saint Petersburg, Liverpool fans quickly took to Skrtel’s combative approach, naming him man of the match in his first Merseyside derby via the team’s official website.

During the 2008-09 season, he had effectively displaced Daniel Agger as Jamie Carragher’s defensive partner but injuries cut that campaign, and the following one, short. Indeed, it was only last term that Skrtel truly cemented his place as Liverpool’s most valued centreback, when he played every minute of the season.

After missing the first two games of the current campaign due to a calf injury, the 27-year old’s season kicked off in style in Gameweek 3, as Skrtel grabbed a goal and a couple of bonus points at Bolton, returning a 10 point Fantasy haul. Skrtel’s other goal this season came away at Aston Villa in Gameweek 16, when a clean sheet and three bonus points earned him 15 points, his second double digit points score of the season. A goal in last month’s Carling Cup final served as further reminder of his attacking prowess and this season he has also emerged as one of the top performing defenders in terms of goal attempts, supplementing his tally with nine clean sheets and seven bonus points.

With Liverpool’s season dogged by controversy and poor attacking form, investment in their players has been limited so far. Currently the ninth best defender in terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points right now with a total of 95, Skrtel is the second top outfield player for the Reds, a single point behind 8.5 priced Charlie Adam’s 96.

Owned by just 5.9% of managers, his initial value of 6.0 has risen by a mere 0.2 since the start of the season but that looks set to change, though, with the upcoming double gameweek 28 seeing Liverpool travel to Sunderland before playing host to Everton.

Indeed, a look at the Reds’ fixtures over the final third of the season from Gameweek 29 onwards (qpr, WIG, new, AVL, bla, FUL, WBA, nor, CHE, swa) has, arguably, just two tricky games- a Gameweek 31 trip to Newcastle and the home match against Chelsea in Gameweek 37. Those Fantasy managers who draft Skrtel in ahead of next week, then, could conceivably play the centre half in virtually all of his side’s remaining matches as Kenny Dalglish attempts to steer his side to a vital fourth place finish.

Anybody else ignoring Liverpool players for the DGW? Away to Sunderland and the Merseyside derby could throw up anything.

Gonna make sure I have a defender. Really pissed that Agger got injured! Just can't decide between Glen Johnson and Skrtel, plenty of cash to spare.

I have to say Johnson is the one to own of the three if money isn't an issue. Skrtel and Johnson are probably similar when it comes to potential points per pound but Enrique wouldn't be a bad bet if your budget doesn't quite stretch.

I'm going for Skrtel and I intend to keep him for the season unless Liverpool's defensive solidity goes to pot.

if you need to make up ground its the perfect opportunity to take a gamble & bring in a differential. After all you will also have 2 transfers next week to correct a gamble that doesn't come off.

I would get rid of Bale for someone. Then next week bring in Suarez for Ba or Aguero

I'm 38 points behind my rival. I got Bale in really cheap though and will want him back in my wildcard. I'm considering Ba > Suarez for the DGW anyway and then will get rid of him for Adebayor regardless of form in my wildcard.

I have 8.4 to spend on a mid (replacing Valencia, injury + Nani/Young conundrum just too much for me). I had originally thought to get Adam, but missed V's price drop while being sick with the flu.

I'm now considering Downing. Is this the Sudafed talking? If so, who else should I look at?

1.Valencia>Morrison(CHE) ; If I go for this one, Morrison will be played instead of Welbeck.

That's true... he does ping in more but with 71 unsucccessful crosses this season against 26 successful ones that does suggest that either he's not very good at crossing, or his team are pretty useless at meeting them. I think the latter may be the case, given his track record last season for Newcastle.

According to the members stats he is practically twice the threat of Enrique. Johnson does edge him for threat stats, but he costs more and is more prone to injury. Skrtel is more nailed on for starts.

Purely in terms of goal attempts Enrique has nine, Skrtel 14 and Johnson 17. Skrtel's value and likelihood of playing make him the best of the three imo.

Threat for goals yes but Enrique is superior in almost every other area. He's cheaper, has more assist potential and is edging Skrtel for Bonus points. Skrtel has 14 attempts in 23, 5 on target. Not worth the extra .4 for me.

I think you are forgetting that in order to have a good assist potential the rest of the team need a good scoring potential. I look at Suarez and his passion for woodwork and Carroll and his big lumuxyness. Skrtel just hammers them in from set pieces...direct but effective.

    My doubts this week....

    Kelly (inj)
    Senderos (bench)
    Richards (bench)
    RVP (niggle)
    Bale (inj)
    Sess (absent)

Shall I use my FT to make sure I have enough players??
    Team is

    Kenny
    Richards-Raylor-Senderos
    Dempsey-Bale-Silva-Walters
    RVP-Aguero(c)-Ba

    Bogdan-Sessegnon-Kelly-Caulker

If Gerrard is out then he's on pens ? With no Vermaelen possibly the Arsenal shambles defence could be back?

Wasn't going to as had/have 2 FTs to do the job.

But if news on Bale and RVP is bad, may have to.

Graham got the same virus as Vorm had last week, and Sessegnon still to get back from international duty. This GW just gets worse (again)

    Source regarding Bale:

REDKNAPP - BALE INJURY NO BIG CONCERN

"That's absolutely a million miles wrong," he said when asked about the reports that Bale was set for a long-term lay-off.

"He hasn't even got a tear in his hamstring. It's just a little bit tight but it should be OK. It shouldn't be a problem.

"We will have to wait and see how he is (for the weekend). Hopefully he should be OK."

    http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=soccer/12/03/02/SOCCER_Tottenham_Bale.html&TEAMHD=soccer&BID=165

That sounds to me like he's giving no guarantees but the chances are very good he'll be fine. Certainly not enough to transfer out that's for sure.

Yeah looks good to me if there's no glaring problems in your front 8 that need the extra money to address. I own Taiwo and I think he won't produce a single cleanie for me all season. I have my wildcard intact though and he'll be shipped out in due course.
