[sbu_large_image] Spot the Differential

Just nine weeks left to go, and things are getting desperate for Fantasy football managers around the world; even the sensible, play it safe type managers are starting to look around at their rivals teams looking for a way to gain an edge. This is exactly where “Differentials” come in; does your rival have a stack of City and Liverpool players? Why not go all in with United and Everton for a few weeks. Is he still clinging onto Dempsey and Sessegnon? Take a punt on Mata or Walcott.

Mixing it up is essential at this stage if you want to close the gap and as always, we’re here to help guide you through the quagmire of the damned, the overlooked and the forgotten, in an effort to scout out the alternative picks that might just give you that edge you’re looking for.…

Javier Hernandez

With no cup distractions and an appealing run of league fixtures coming up next (FUL, bla, QPR, wig, AVL), maxing out your allocation of United players seems a no brainer. Jonny Evans at 4.6 looks a shoo-in for the first slot, and Antonio Valencia at 7.7 in midfield is also rightly tempting investment. The problem here is that Wayne Rooney is the obvious target for a striker spot in our squads, but priced at an eye watering 12.6 and owned by over a third of all managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, the talismanic striker might be a luxury too far for some.

Hernandez at 9.9 offers a viable alternative route into the United attack, whilst presenting the tantalising option of ignoring Valencia and going with a twin United pairing up front. The Mexican may not be quite as rotation-proof as Rooney, but has now played every minute of their last two games despite Danny Welbeck also being on the pitch. Injuries aside, he looks fairly assured of a starting role from this point on.

As a Fantasy target, Chicarito’s appeal is obvious. Hernandez has scored or assisted in four of his last five appearances, picking up the maximum bonus twice and it is only his lack of consistent starts that has hampered his overall returns this season. In fact, if we compare his average points return per 90 minutes of pitch time with that of Rooney, we get an almost identical result – 7.32 for Rooney and 7.26 for Hernandez. Value wise, Hernandez look like a great pick then, and with just 3.2% ownership he could give his investors a great differential boost over the next few weeks.

David (Junior) Hoilett

Steve Kean has tinkered with a few different formations this season, but Blackburn have never looked as settled as they have in the last few matches. Their 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal clearly made an impact on the players; they have since picked up 10 points from 5 games and their previously shoddy defence has even managed to earn their first and second clean sheets of the season.

Key to their recent upturn in form was the decision to move Junior Hoilett off the wing into a support striker role, behind Yakubu. Hoilett has always had a tendency to come inside and run at defenders but the pint-sized forward is relishing his freedom in the middle of the park, picking up three goals in his last two outings.

It’s impossible to predict how Bolton will react to the shocking events of last weekend; one hopes they will stand strong and put in a big performance, but, realistically, they’ll find it very difficult to contain a resurgent Blackburn side when hearts and minds are focused elsewhere. Looking beyond this weekend, fixtures toughen up considerably for Rovers: they face Man United, Liverpool and West Brom in the next three but don’t let that put you off, Kean’s side have proven more than capable of scoring anywhere this season and priced at just 5.5, Hoilett offers strong value.

Samir Nasri

Although Man City’s home form shows no sign of slowing, their recent away record has been patchy at best. With a difficult trip to Stoke this weekend, the City ranks aren’t the most obvious of places to start looking for a Fantasy pick, but there’s something about Samir Nasri that appeals right now. Maybe it was his vital goal in midweek or his recent fighting talk towards their title rivals, but, suddenly, Nasri seems on his game. If he can carry that form enthusiasm into the game at the Britannia, he has a great chance to put together a run of points with Sunderland, West Brom, Norwich and Wolves up next.

Nasri’s improved displays in recent weeks has, so far, only fetched the one goal and FPL bonus. However, the signs are definitely encouraging and with David Silva’s performance statistics indicating that he’s heading in completely the opposite direction, now could be a great time to plump for the ex-Arsenal man. Nasri is currently available for a pretty reasonable price of 9.1 in the FPL game, and his ownership of 3.7% to Silva’s 40%, makes him a strong differential.

I can't. Both would be reasonable choices. Crystal ball is in the shop, so anyone who says for sure that one is better is overselling it a bit. My thoughts are that it isn't entirely uncommon for big chunk of United's offense to come from other points, whereas RVP is more commonly in the middle of it. Also, I think Fulham is a better squad than Villa. But both of those are really soft reasons and you should just go with whatever will make you happier.

Good question. Rooney offers up a good differential this week as a captain. If FUL defend as they did last week, then he could easily fill his boots.

Not sure if AVL present much of a threat to ARS.

Ah dammit, MAN U are chasing the goals for better goal difference - has to be goals in this game!

defenders have been coming good lately, richards is due for something. city have to be sweating it, i think they concentrate more on not conceding then they do on scoring against stoke. i will guess a 0-1 score.

Surman was just a stop gap to get Rooney, he's gone soon, in the mean time I'll play Sigurdsson every week, which Im sure you know now, is fine.
Nothing wrong with expensive defenders is there? I have money to spend, and considering Vermaelen has the highest PPG of any regular playing defender, and just bagged me 25 points in 2 weeks, Im fine with spending 6.7 on him.
Silva? His time is up, carrying an injury, playing poorly for a while now, not just in FPL... 1 goal in 19 weeks, 3.8 PPG since GW16 (and he has actually outscored Surman by just 3 points in that time) for 10M, he is just not worth the outlay...

I am currently on 1715 points and have eaten up an 86 point lead over the last 8 weeks!

i dont like starting ba and mccauley, not everyone agrees but i have a philosophy of not starting an attacker and a defender who are against each other in the same game. the form simply isnt there for ba right now. id start bale instead.

i am tempted by colocini over mccauley, if you have three toons benched, and they get a good result, you will be in hell. Reference last week, as i heard horror stories of managers who benched vorm, caulker AND siggy. but if you bench mccauley, then my philsophy is out the window as ba looks more attractive. still prefer bale though.

“Where they find some owners now, I don’t know. I remember the first guy they brought in at Portsmouth from Saudi Arabia somewhere. He looked like they pulled him off the stall outside. He looked like the only Arab who didn’t have oil in his garden.”

everton is always a slow-starter.can't blame them though due to financial constraint.its hard for them to keep their star players eg. arteta, lescott, rooney, pienaar. from what i observed, at the start of the season everton will struggle as david moyes struggle to find a correct balance in the team after their star players left. but slowly they will come good, n what impressed me is moyes always come out with a solution on how to utilize his players strength. for example, there was one season when they play with cahill as lone striker supported by fellaini. n last season coleman plays at right wing while osman plays behind the striker. when SAF finally decide to retire, i'll vote for david moyes to replace him

I know it arises from the need to create new chemistry every year out of the bargains that he finds. It's that kind of in-season evolution that I really enjoy seeing, but just _once_ I'd like to see it kick in before January.

ahh screw it, pratik if you are lurking, here you go

    Al-Habsi 😳

    Verm, Carragher , Evans

    Young, Bale, Dempsey, Siggy

    RVP(C), Rooney, Suarez

    (Santon, Senderos, Dyer)

bench is rubbish, no freebies, nothing in the bank. thinking about santon->caulker for -4 and playing caulker over Dempsey. its a "hope to break even" kind of move, but could let me bench dempsey, maintaining my hope for an evans CS, but at least dempsey would provide some hope of returns if needed off the bench, where the current lot could easily finish the GW with (0, 1, 0) points. also have a hunch my opponent brought in a swansea defender, this would let me cancel out his points there and i have the 4 point home field advantage. what say you?

He was here last night and had the a-ha moment that he was playing you. People wondered where you were and were taking note of the matchup.

Tough call. Four point hit can be rough, but I think Santon>Caulker is a good move. For now and for the rest of the season. If you want to make that move for remainder of season, though, I'd do it this week because there is little benefit to the swap next week.

Benching Dempsey has no effect on your hopes for an Evans CS. United will play the same defense and you will get the same Evans points regardless of whether you have Dempsey in your lineup. Your equation would be "Will Caulker minus four be greater than Dempsey?" Dempsey will go 90, so will give you two. He won't lose any points, even if they get shelled and he doesn't pick up a lot of cards. He has shown ability to score in big matches so could come up with an assist or a goal (not counting on it, though). Caulker could well put up a six against Everton, who don't score well on road, but when you take out the four that you give up for bringing him on, at best, you break even. He might push you ahead if he pulls bonus points (and he does reasonably often), but he only has one assist and no goals on season so don't count on more.

I think the effect on your points this week would quite well be a wash, but would the move fit for your plans for coming weeks?

yeah thats the idea, i want caulker for the run in and there are so many other moves i want to make. thanks for the input mate. i think i will stick though. dempsey could rise to the occasion and Mark seems to think they will go 4-5-1 which makes me feel much better about using him.

Maybe that was what it was. Somebody last night discovered they were playing you, but I don't remember who it was and they didn't particularly say what cup it was. Matchup in FPL Open is your position vs person in (257 minus your position), so in this case, you are 242 and you play 15, which is Soggy Busquets - Paul Hughes. TorresMagic had a link to a Google Docs page where he had the entire brackets. Let me see if I can find it.

As I asked yesterday, everyone said Vermaelen, but this week Skrtel/Enrique is better, right? Wigan at home is hard to ignore.

People on here consider Verm to be a striker. So no point debating with them...

Not sure...it's just the risk of the guy level on points with me having Dempsey too.

Playing Ba at least could get a differential over him, but Dempsey, although away from home and against Man U could get something...should probably go Ba as the differential! The game is all about risk and reward I guess.
