It is hard to believe Thomas Vermaelen is a defender by trade, such is the frequency in which he appears in opposition penalty boxes. With his surging runs up the field and set piece threat, the Arsenal defender exhibits a level of attacking skill that leaves many designated forwards in the shade. With this in mind, it’s no surprise to see him topping the defender goal scoring charts, having notched five times already this term.

Finding the net hasn’t always been a facet of the Belgian international’s career, however. A product of the Ajax’s famed youth academy, he has notched 24 career goals since making his first team debut for the Dutch club in 2004, though half of these have come since joining Arsenal in 2009. It is no wonder he is referred to as the Gunners’ second best striker after Robin Van Persie, although on paper this season, he is the fourth most clinical in terms of goals scored.

Despite missing nine games this term through injury and suspension, Vermaelen has still managed to accrue 115 points and is the sixth best defender in terms of total points in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Goals have undoubtedly helped him achieve this, with four double-figure returns and 13 bonus points to his name already. Among his most recent hauls was a goal and maximum bonus points in Arsenal’s Gameweek 29 victory over Everton at Goodison Park.

In recent weeks a resurgent Arsenal have tightened up markedly at the back, racking up four clean sheets in the last five Gameweeks. Vermaelen’s influence in the Gunners’ backline is obvious; in the 23 games he has started, they have returned 10 clean sheets but without Vermaelen in the first XI, Arsenal have chalked up just two clean sheets in 10 matches; a drop from 43% to 20%.

Crucially for those Fantasy managers scrabbling around to get a team together for the problematic Gameweek 34, Vermaelen is set to host Wigan this Monday. The recent improvement in form for the relegation-threatened Lancashire side will not worry Vermaelen, though; Arsenal’s Gameweek 14 clash away to Wigan was the scene of a 16 point haul for the centre-half, his biggest of the season so far.

The 7.0 priced defender then faces ( CHE, sto, NOR, wba) over the last four fixtures of the season and, with considerable potential to accrue points at both ends of the pitch, Vermaelen seems well-placed to pick up the points as Arsenal look to secure an automatic Champions League spot in the race for third with north London rivals Spurs.

Might be looking for redemption though. And the stats are in Wayne's favour. When United were dumped out of the Champions League, Rooney scored 4 in the following 3 games. When United were dumped out of the FA Cup by Liverpool, Rooney 7 scored in his next 4 games.

Last 7-8? How does that reflect current form when this goes back to before Christmas for Rooney?
and what do you mean "my point" ? I wasn't the one pointing out random stats that made no sense in the argument.

How is that a random stat? How about his last 3 home games then compared to RVP's?

I don't care if RVP's getting in good positions as he's not scoring while Rooney is.

Because he said RVP has only scored once since the 12th of March - which is clearly meant to be an argument 'for' captaining Rooney, but RVP has still outscored Rooney in that period.
Captain Rooney, I don't really care, it will probably pay off, but I don't understand why you are getting so upset about it

RVP is constantly in goal scoring positions and is the focal point of every arsenal attack, being involved in every goal and scoring a great percentage of them.

Rooney on the other hand likes to come deep and be involved in starting the play and then never really busts a gut to get on the end of the move. He is in a team where goals can come from many other areas, like the wingers, the other forward and centre mids. In the recent games of man utd i've watched, whilst Rooney does have a good number of efforts, they are all from fairly far out.

Rooney has had 38 shots in his 6 home games this year includign 5 on target in his last game against QPR. That's 6.33 shots per game.

The difference between home and away is pretty shocking:

I would say they are similar but I think RVP should be slightly favored and rightly so. That isn't to say that Rooney captain isn't a bad choice though. Thats my opinion anyway and I'd think the majority would agree. Neither of them are a rubbish choice

Looking ahead to the DGW, who else on here is looking at my name sake the Jellyfish? I was originally setting my sights on Ade, but unless he shows some serious form in the FA cup semi and gameweek 5 my plans may be switching to Jelly. This in itself opens up significant additional funds, which would allow me to swap McClean out (probably for Bale, VDV, Mata or fatty) and keep Sess for the run in, leaving me with the following 8 DGW players for the gw36

    Krul
    Baines
Kelly (although probably won’t play him)
    Bale/VDV/Mata/Fatty
    Dempsey
    Sess
    Cisse

    My current DGW team

requires an 8 point hit, buts sets me up nicely for GW37 as well

    Freidel (BLA, bol)

Huth (ARS, EVE) Baines, (FUL, sto) Santon (wig, che)

Sess (BOL), Siggy (WOL), Bale (BLA, bol) Dempsey (eve, liv)

RvP (sto), Cisse (wig, che) Ade (BLA, bol)

Mingolet (BOL), McClean (BOL), Caulker (WOL) Verm (sto)

Means I can dump Sess and Siggy for Theo and Moses in GW37

so, still undecided on (c). It's going to be one of Rooney or RvP
Rival who's 30 points ahead will almost certainly hand RvP the armband, with only 5 GWs left is it time to gamble, or should i go with RvP anyway (who i see as the slightly 'safer' option)
