Another season of football is drawing to a climax. We have a mere four Gameweeks left to go, two of them with double fixtures (one less appealing than t’other), and nary a moment to try and claw back those mini-league gaps.

Every decision from this point here on in will be vital for Fantasy managers vying for that office trophy, for that little jackpot in a money league or just plain bragging rights.

In these desperate times, when differentials can be so crucial, there is one decision that can prove more significant than any other: the captaincy.

Only last Gameweek runaway favourite Robin Van Persie walk away with a standard two point return while underdog options like Wayne Rooney, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Sergio Aguero hit double-figure returns. More than ten Fantasy points was lost and won in contests like this and, as the season heads into the final furlong, we’re going to start to assessing the weekly options in depth, starting with the imminent -and decidedly tricky- Gameweek 35.

Wayne Rooney, for starters, is the antithesis of the dilemma. On the one hand we have a player before us who has picked up an average of 10.8 points in his last five fixtures at Old Trafford, while arguably not playing to his utmost potential.

On the flip-side, United will face perhaps their toughest opposition on home soil in months as David Moyes brings his Everton side up to Manchester. Fantasy managers believing that past situations are indicators of future results will also be wary of the United hitman’s less than stellar record against his former club.

With 15 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points collected from the last 15 on offer and a haul of 8 goals and an assist over his last five fixtures, Papiss Cisse’s form is nothing short of imperious. He has settled into Newcastle like a bare-chested beer-monster on a night out and, at this venture, there’s no reason to expect his form should waver ahead of a home encounter with Stoke.

His rampant ruthlessness in front of goal has squashed Liverpool and Swansea, to name but a couple in recent weeks and, with Demba Ba manfully ceding the position of lead striker to his countryman, the January acquisition might be the clearest candidate of them all up against a Stoke side clear of the relegation battle and with only pride to play for.

A run of form will always come to an end at some point, and the most prudent of Fantasy managers knows exactly when the time is right to change tack and move along. With Clint Dempsey returning double figures in each of his last three Gameweeks in his most prolific season to date, the Fulham midfielder might just be the man to sneak an advantage over rivals this weekend.

Fantasy managers would once swoon over a home clash with Wigan on the horizon but, with recent results very much favouring the Latics (wins over Liverpool, United and Arsenal as well as an undeserved defeat at Chelsea), this game might just prove frustrating for Fulham, Dempsey and his Fantasy owners alike. With Pavel Pogrebnyak now fit, Dempsey looks set to return to midfield, following his recent stint up front – another factor to consider.

Also down in the marshes with Wigan are Terry Connor’s Wolves. A drab goalless draw at Sunderland failed to paper the monumental cracks in this outfit and, for want of a better word, they find themselves marooned.

Unfortunately for them, then, this Sunday afternoon they face up to the in-form combination of Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez. With eight goals between them this last two weeks, the Argentine duo look like a pocket rocket of potential as they try to keep City in contention for the title.

With United, Newcastle, Fulham and City all offering up candidates of fairly equal measure, it also has to be noted there’s a couple of sides with an extra something to add to the equation. Aston Villa (SUN/BOL) and Bolton (SWA/avl) will both have two ties this Gameweek to compete against everyone else’s sole fixture.

Fantasy managers willing to look past the league placing of these two outfits, lured in by the draw of an extra 90 minutes will doubtless turn to the likes of Stephen Ireland and Martin Petrov, whilst perhaps hoping that Gabriel Agbonlahor could find a goal or two at the end of the the double rainbow.

At this point we haven’t even mentioned regular favourite Robin Van Persie, hosting Chelsea and looking to arrest his goalscoring slump with no goals from open play in the last six Premier League fixtures. While that will play on the mind, with the kind of returns he produced in the 5-3 romp in the reverse fixture, there’s every cause to be optimistic about the Dutchman.

Van Persie’s form has clearly played a part in the current voting in our poll. With over 3000 votes now in, he finds himself adrift in fifth spot, behind the likes of Dempsey, Cisse and the City striker pairing. Rooney comes next, with Martin Petrov the most fancied double Gameweek offering.

From that voting, we can deduce that both Van Persie and Rooney could even emerge as unlikely differentials. Van Persie has endured almost 50,000 transfers out this week, more than any other player in the FPL. Rooney, meanwhile, has also been sold by other 20,000 managers. With Tevez, Aguero and Cisse seemingly sucking up investors, suddenly we’re seeing a swing away from the previous favourites for the armband. Should Van Persie and Rooney overshadow their striking rivals at City and Newcastle, we could see some significant shifts in ranks – clearly this is a week wide open to a gamble on the armband. One thing looks certain, then, the Captain conundrum for Gameweek 35 looks set to shake things up, right in time for the Gameweek 36 doubles to add further spice.

The strategy, as so often is the case, will depend largely on your rivals. Should they transfer in Tevez or Aguero, it seems likely they’ll back that with the armband, with Rooney or Van Persie sacrificed. With the luxury of a comfortable lead, sitting tight on one of those two would seem wise – even with form and fixtures against them. For those chasing a gap, City’s attacking talent clearly presents a very viable source of profit that could change the complexion of the season climax. Another hat-trick from either Tevez or Aguero and suddenly a gap can be evaporated.

Our Captain’s Poll is, of course, still running in the middle menu of the Homepage.

Hard one to call with Everton and Stoke being pretty solid teams defensively. I'd say Rooney because he was disappointed in his last performance even though he netted twice, if he's looking to improve v Everton he could score a few

if i was sure cisse would score more then i bring in aguero for rooney cause i feel rooney wont score against man city next gameweek when aguero could probably score home.

If Yak starts against Norwich, it surely would be madness to have him benched right? And if he doesn't, that's what autosubs are for, am I right? So I'm leaning towards Bale atm. Thoughts please?

    Repost for the new post

    JK’s DGW Midfielder’s Review – Part 2

    Newcastle

Most likely target – Hatem Ben Arfa

A long time favourite here on FFS, then man better known as Barfa has been appearing in squads all season, though ownership of him carried great risk, as he seemed to to get so few minutes on the pitch. However, in the last few weeks all that has changed. An explosive burst of form from his new role as an advanced right-winger has seen Ben Arfa score 3 an assist 4 in the last 6 weeks, including THAT goal vs Bolton 2 weeks ago. This has seen his price skyrocket in the last few weeks, meaning he is now 6 million. For those that made an early purchase whilst his price was low, rewards have been stunning. That being said, with trips to in form Wigan, and what is fast re-becoming fortress Stamford Bridge, Newcastle’s DGW fixtures no longer carry the same weight. That being said Ben Arfa’s form and price will continue to lead to investment in him, and, given that his best performances have generally come away from home, who would bet against him?

    Alternative Option – Yohann Cabaye

By no means a regular FPL scorer, Cabaye still offers his owners some chance. With Ryan Taylor out of the picture, Cabaye has stepped us as Newcastle’s set-piece taker-in-chief. His free kick against Man United showed his quality and he possesses a fearsome shot from distance when in a position to use it. He also has 3 assists in his last 2 games, showing that when he ticks, so do Newcastle, making him perhaps a better pick then given credit for

Doosra Differential Punt – Jonas Guttierez

Now restored to a midfield role after a stint a left-back, Jonas, or Spiderman as he is sometimes known, has been a consistent performer for Newcastle, though often without the returns to back it up. Nonetheless he offers a nice mix of the flair of Ben Arfa and the quality of Cabaye, possessing both an ability to beat men, and a fierce shot. The problem has been that Jonas has sacrificed his own glory for the good of the team on many occasions. Whilst this trait is admirable, it does not make for a good FPL investment. That being said, when he delivers, he delivers well, and in a DGW where rotation and tiredness may be a major factor, his indefatigability may lead him to take the lead role.

    Liverpool

Most likely target – Steven Gerrard

As his last DGW showed, Liverpool’s skipper and talisman still has the potential to deliver huge returns. On set-pieces and penalties as well a penchant for a arriving late into the opposition penalty area make a high points total a real possibility. But with a cup final on the horizon, a recent injury record, a manager who likes to rotate, is Gerrard likely to start both games? In simple terms, probably not, but his last DGW showed that, even in one game, he can still return more points then many other mids would in 2, and if captained the results could be huge.

    Alternative option – Dirk Kuyt

Another who has been prone to rotation and investment, the Dutchman has, nevertheless shown he still has something to offer. He is also known to perform strongly towards the end of the season, and, if given the chance could perform well for both Livepool and FPL owners. But, Kuyt starts on the bench as often as he does on the pitch, and this fact must be taken into account by potential owners. Like Gerrard though, he carries the prospect of decent rewards and should feature in at least 1 game.

Doosra Differential Punt – Maxi Rodriguez

Carrying an ownership of just over 1% and a points per game of 5.1, Maxi may be the ultimate differential. There is just one problem, he very rarely plays. He has featured just 8 times in the league for Liverpool this season, so predicting his starts is difficult, except to say there will not be many. That being said those 8 appearances have yielded 4 goals, so we know that when he does play, he gets points. Owning him for DGW is risky, but chances are he will get a run-out in 1 of the games, and if you are prepared to take on the risk of owning him, the chances of a healthy reward are great.

    Chelsea

Most likely target – Juan Mata

A good first season in the Premier League has seen the Spainiard chip in with 6 goals and 12 assists. He also looks one of the more nailed on members of Chelsea’s midfield having failed to start just twice all season. That being said, he has only delivered double digit hauls 4 times, suggesting he needs more consistency there. However, all those hauls have come at home and Chelsea have 2 home games in DGW, plus a home game with Blackburn in the final week. But with an FA cup final, and possible Champions League final makes rotation a high possibility. However, as with many of our other candidates, he could inflict severe damage and deliver a huge points haul in just 1 game.

    Alternative option – Frank Lampard

The main obstacle towards ownership of the fat one has tended to be that rather restrictive 11 million price tag, a price many were mot prepared to pay for a rotation risk. That however has changed under Roberto Di Matteo with Lampard now restored as first-choice. Again, he is unlikely to play both games, but is capable of huge points in one game, especially as he is on penalties, corners and takes a fair amount of free-kicks, though Drogba often steals them. He is also only 9 points behind Mata but has played 243 minutes less, giving him a much better PPG. If you have the money and are prepared for the fact that he not play both games, Lamps could be a stunning captain choice.

    Doosra differential punt – Ramires

In and out of the side under AVB, the Brazilian workhorse seems to have made that right-midfield slot his own under RDM. He energy and tirelessness have been a major boost for Chelsea, and as he showed in providing the assist in the Champions League on Wednesday he is also not afraid to get forwatrd, and could chip in with the odd goal and assist. Priced at just 6.9 million he is significantly cheaper than his 2 more illustrious colleagues and this may prove valuable to anyone looking to go all-out attack in DGW.

To give you an example, I have a 41-point lead. My rival has brought in Tevez for Rooney and there is no way I won't be doing the same to cover him.

A double figure score and a captain's armband and my lead could be all but wiped out.

Me also. I'm currently 95 points clear but still worried i'll get caught with some blockbuster performance. My rivals both have rooney. I have roon and rvp so am thinking of dropping rvp for aguero/tevez and taking a hit for dempsey to walcott? I also have baines and am thinking of an 8 point hit to get simpson in for next weeks dgw. any advice greatly appreciated as its squeaky bum time for sure!

I'm leading and I took out RVP... but it was to Aguero who I think will score more over the next 2 GWs and who wa my rival's differential.

Interesting Suarez (c) shout. Are you playing catch up and need a differential?

Suarez > Cisse would look good to me.

Dempsey might not be quite the point machine he has been recently with Pog back up top for Fulham.

are Paul Mersons predictions usually correct, if so im deffinetley benching bale..

    QPR v Tottenham
    PAUL PREDICTS: 1-1
QPR will be a hard place for Tottenham to go. It's a very small, compact pitch and the pace of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon won't count for a lot at Loftus Road. QPR will close them down all over the pitch and I think they can get a draw out of this.

Have done Roo > Tevez already and thinking for Kaboul > Agger with my other FT.

Then next week take the -4pt with Tevez > Ade and McCauley > BAE.

Sound? That would give me for this week:

    Krul (Vorm)
    Evans Kompany Agger (Caulker McCauley)
    Demps Bale Valencia Siggy (McClean)
    Tevez (C) RVP Cisse

This really is an excellent end to the season... some people ditching Rooney and RVP - some people captaining them the same week... next week everyone's team will look different as some take punts on a double game week where none of the big boys play but with lots of leftfield potential...

This GW has to be the hardest so far for decisions. This week, for example, there are no stand out captains choices (apart from City!!) I have a 60 pt lead in one of my ML, second place has brought in Collins and already has NZog. He will captain one of those. We have been fairly open with each other regarding subs this year and there is not a lot of cash riding on it. So i don't want to be jack and transfer in Collins to cover. I have already done Walcott to HBA as one FT this week. Team is:-

    Krul
    Verm, Evans, Turner
    Bale, Siggy, Valencia, HBA, Bale
    Rooney,RVP

Subs - Mig, Ade, Caulker, McAuley

    His Team at a guess:-

    Vorm
    Collins, Sagna, Evans
    Bale, Valencia, Siggy, Nzog, Toure
    Yak, RVP

Subs - Szczesny, BAE, Caulker, Jelly

    Should i:-

    a) Rooney to Tevez and captain him
    b) save FT for DGW

    Issues -
I will be getting rid of either Rooney / Tevez next week for Jelly anyway so i would potentially be wasting 4 pts and as a Man U fan i would hate to be celebrating pts from Tevez scoring against us.

I currently have for next DGW 5 players against his 3.

    Opinions please?

    Current squad:

    Vorm (bol) / Reina (WBA)

Williams (bol) / Rigewell (liv) / Evans (EVE) / R Taylor (STO) / BAE (qpr)

Demps (WIG) / McLean (avl) / Young (EVE) / VDV (qpr) / Sigg (bol)

RVP (CHE) / Rooney (EVE) / Bentdner (avl)

willing to make upto 2 transfers this GW. Other than Aguero & Tevez (who are extremely common in my league at the moment) & HBA & P Cisse (who my rival owns) who should I consider that is likely to impress?

    Cheers
