It’s time to roll out the third article in our End of Season awards. With Vincent Kompany taking top spot for the defenders, we now turn our attentions to the midfield options. Once again, you’ll find the poll in the middle of the main page, just underneath the Captain Poll for Gameweek 38:

As always, bear in mind that the vote is from an overall Fantasy perspective – total points, price, performances and FPL value should all come into consideration here.

Also be aware that each person is entitled to vote for four midfielders here..

Gareth Bale
Starting the season priced at 8.0, the Welshman was slow out the blocks, with just one goal in the first nine Gameweeks. Bale then exploded into form, with four double figure hauls between Gameweeks 10-14 confirming he’d firmly arrived as a Fantasy force. Although the goals have dried up – he hasn’t found the net since January – his creativity has continued to thrive, with 14 assists provided to date. With 10 goals and 21 bonus points also thrown in, Bale’s total of 192 points beats his previous high of 118 by a considerable distance, suggesting he’s set for a substantial price hike next time round.

Victor Moses
After fourteen Gameweeks of the season, our Victor looked anything but a viable Fantasy option. Moses had produced a single assist over that period, with his owners deserting him in their droves, but since mid-December, he’s proven to be a cut-price gem. With his price dropping as low as 4.6, the winger has been a pivotal figure in Wigan’s great escape and has racked up a further six goals, five assists and 15 bonus points from Gameweek 15 onwards. Now priced at 5.5, Moses is the number one midfielder for value, with 139 points on the board ahead of this weekend’s visit of Wolves.

Antonio Valencia
The right winger established himself as a first-team fixture in Gameweek 14 and never looked back. Handed a starting price of 8.0, compared to fellow United wide man Nani and Ashley Young’s 10.0, Valencia has offered Fantasy managers a superb value route into Sir Alex Ferguson’s midfield. The Ecuadorian’s creativity on the flank has harvested 14 assists and four goals in just 21 starts for the defending champions, with five double figure returns highlighting his explosive potential.

Stephane Sessegnon
There was a point – just around the winter wildcard period – where Sessegnon was considered a must-have by many. Dropping down to 6.2 in December, the Sunderland man proved a superb mid-price option, racking up four goals and five assists between Gameweeks 17-24 as the Martin O’Neill effect saw the Black Cats soar away from the drop zone. Acquiring the Benin international over that particular point in time turned out to be invaluable for Fantasy managers and, while the returns have dried up over the last few weeks, a total of seven goals and 12 assists sees him sitting comfortably inside the top ten midfield rankings, with a score of 159 points.

Juan Mata
Chelsea’s summer signing from Valencia has settled in seamlessly in his debut season. Mata has flourished in spite of the managerial merry-go-round, providing 16 assists for his Fantasy owners – joint-top with David Silva, despite just one start in his last five as Roberto Di Matteo keeps him fresh for the upcoming Champions League Final. While his creativity has excelled, a six-goal haul fails to reflect his attacking threat, while Mata hasn’t been the best for picking up bonus – he’s been rewarded on just five occasions this term, for a total of 12 bonus points.

David Silva
The City playmaker ran riot in the first half of the season. Producing attacking returns in 12 of his first 16 Gameweeks, Silva sparked a scramble amongst Fantasy managers to get on board the bandwagon. His priced soared from 9.5 to 10.5, with his level of consistency proving impossible to ignore, but the winter period saw his stumble spectacularly. Nevertheless, he has mirrored Mata’s six goal, 16 assist returns, and has proven superior to his compatriot when it comes to racking up bonus points, with 21 accrued thus far. With five double figure hauls to his name, Silva sits third in the midfield rankings with 179 points, 13 behind Bale.

Clint Dempsey
The top scoring FPL midfielder so far, Dempsey has proven to be a Fantasy sensation in Martin Jol’s first season in charge at the Cottage. Whether on the left of the Fulham midfield or as an emergency striker, the US international has racked up the goals. His finest Fantasy campaign to date has harvested 17 goals, seven assists and 22 bonus points, with six double figure points hauls at home making him a reliable captaincy option, too. In addition, Dempsey’s consistency has been strong, with the Fulham man never enduring more than three Gameweeks without a goal – his Fantasy owners were rarely, if ever, frustrated.

Theo Walcott
This was the season that Walcott finally laid to rest the notion that he’s too inconsistent to worth considering as a Fantasy asset. As Arsenal overhauled Spurs in the race for third, the winger’s contribution was key – a total of four double figure hauls from February onwards was indicative of his strong finish, at a time when many midfield Fantasy favourites were beginning to waver. Walcott’s up front understanding with the prolific Robin Van Persie helped the winger return 11 assists and, with eight goals also to his name, he sits fourth in the midfield rankings, with 168 points.

Gylfi Sigurdsson
Swansea’s January loan signing was a shot in the arm for many Fantasy managers’ seasons. Priced at 5.0 by FPL, Sigurdsson’s class was given license to excel in Brendan Rodgers’ 4-3-3 system and he didn’t disappoint. Over his 17 appearances for the Welsh club, he’s returned seven goals, five assists and 11 bonus points, in addition to four double figure returns. Despite his superb value, Sigurdsson has risen by just 0.6, with his average of 5.6 points per game superior to any midfielder so far this term.

Rafael Van der Vaart
Top for bonus amongst the midfield men, with 28 points to date, the Dutchman’s explosive potential is highlighted by a total of eight double figure hauls. Starting the season at 10.0, Van der Vaart perhaps suffered as many Fantasy managers moved to the far cheaper Gareth Bale in order to free up budget but, as the Welshman stumbles towards the finishing line, his team mate has finished strongly over the final few months of the campaign. Despite a steady supply of key passes, Van der Vaart has picked just six assists this season but is Spurs’ second top scorer, with 11 goals thus far.

James McClean
The dismissal of Steve Bruce allowed the young Irishman the chance to flourish as a Fantasy force on the Sunderland left flank. Installed to the first-team by Martin O’Neill in Gameweek 19, McClean has started every match since and has proven to be a reliable cut-price option for Fantasy managers. In just 19 starts, he picked up 18 bonus points, with his all-round game clearly suited to the EA SPORTS PPI system. McClean has also chipped in with five goals and three assists – at a price of 4.8, he has produced 4.5 points per game, the equal of Sessegnon in the Black Cats’ midfield.

Yaya Toure
Despite a consistency of starts and reasonable starting price of 8.0, Toure’s exploits have mainly been overshadowed by David Silva over the course of the season. Pretty much a guaranteed first-team pick by Roberto Mancini when fit and available, the Ivorian has still, nevertheless, proven to be strong value for Fantasy managers. With six goals, eight assists and 15 bonus points, he’s offered a viable alternative to those looking to splash a little less cash in the City midfield.

Who should I bring in for Dempsey?

    a) VDV
    b) Silva
    c) Nasri
    d) GYT

Other mids are Bale, Pienaar, Petrov and HBA so I expect HBA to be keeping the bench warm.

My thinking too. I'm a little nervous without any ManU cover but I don't like their fixture. But Fulham sans Capt. America might be looking at a tasty battering so the double on Spurs looks the better option.

I'm I over-reliant on Everton with Hibbert, Peanut and Jellyfish?

Another thing with Dempsey is that he's been predictable, a wonderful thing for captaincy choices - he always delivers at home, or occasionally away to weaker sides, you can bench him away to united or arsenal in the knowledge that you won't have a dozen points on the bench

I went for Bale. 2nd highest point scorer and played only as a midfielder. If you count just Dempsey's performances in midfield he only had an OK season. He scored 11 goals when playing as a striker by my reckoning. Being misclassified was his best advantage.

Depends on when he bought him
GW23 or before: Cost 4.5 then, cost 4.9 now, sale price: 4.7. His team value drops 0.2.
GW24 or GW25. Cost 4.6 or 4.7 then, cost 4.9 now, sale price 4.8. His team vale drops either 0.2 or 0.1.
GW26: Cost 4.8 then, cost 4.9 now, sale price 4.8. Team value drops 0.1.
Any other GW: Cost 4.9 or 5.0 then, cost 4.9 now, sale price 4.9. Team value drops either 0.0 or 0.1.

Can anyone see a crazy massive score between 2 teams who have nothing to play for? Maybe Everton/Newcastle or Swansea/Liverpool? 25 points behind in my minileague, was going to cap Tevez (rival has Aguero) but I’ve got a feeling that game will be fairly tight, maybe 1 or 2 nil to City. Could even go without City attacking coverage and cap Rooney, or is that madness?

Just seen now Dempsey out.. -4 to bring in Ramires or Toure worth it? Otherwise I'd play Walters..

Thing is though McClean will get at least a 2 right, so in order to make up for the hit and actually get something from it (since there's no other fixtures where your hit can justify itself) is by scoring a goal or getting an assist + BP. It seems a better idea just to stay with McClean..?

Beavis, it's the classic risk/reward debate. But I think you're right about Cleany, 2 pt'er likely. I'd probably risk a hit to roll the dice on a player capable of getting a 5-10 pt game, but it depends on whether safety-first suits your league ambitions etc.

Ramires will definitely play against Blackburn, given he's out of the CL final, right?

Just have a slight worry that RDM will try playing the team that will feature there for extra game time together before the final 😛

Right, I'm 31 pts ahead in my mini league at the moment but my team isn't looking brilliant for this week.

All 3 on the bench are injured, Enrique maybe won't play again plus my other 2 defenders' fixtures are difficult. Sessegnon is up against united.

    Any suggestions?

    Current team:

    Schwarzer
    McAuley Enrique Caulker
    Pienaar Valencia Sigurdsson Sessegnon
    Cissue Adebayor(v) Sessegnon

    Bench: Mignolet Evans Dempsey Cahill
1 free transfer, £5.2m in the bank.

    2 Questions all!

    1) What are Mata's chances of starting on Sunday? Was anything said in the press conferences?

(I'd rather prefer you lot not saying "No-one knows" or "Only RDM knows") Just looking for some info thats crucial to my ML.

    2) My bench is non playing. Dempsey - Simpson - Evans. Incase Mata doesn't play should I do Dempsey > Silva and play him over Valencia who will be benched?

    Thanks in advance!

How would anyone on here have inside knowledge of RDM's plans, beyond what he has told us in the press conference? RDM has said that he will give a few youngsters a game on Sunday, so I'd say 15% chance of him starting.

If you plan to have Mata, you definitely need to have a playing sub to cover.

just an update on the Chelsea situation. From Chelsea's Official Site

Di Matteo anticipates on Sunday he will utilise some players likely to play against Bayern Munich and some young players.

        Siggy

But Santon is my only fit sub, unless I take the hit in defence and do Evans to Rafael?

Play Siggy, don't take a hit.
I won't have any subs by the looks of it. Just grin and bear it.

yeah I may do that, want to try and break 3k, Siggy could still score well, I will likely only need 1 sub if Nani doesn't play.

            I think

            De Gea

            Caulker, Verm, Jags

            Siggy, Maloney, Nani, VdV

            Jelly, RvP, Aguero (c)

            should see me right

    Siggy, Moses, Bale, Pienaar.

That's true, just reckon he's got a decent chance of starting. I'm settled on getting a City midfielder in but now deciding Nasri/Silva or Yaya?

Not Yaya. Those 2 goals were a flash in the pan IMO. People are jerking to get him in.

Coin toss between Nasri and Silva.
