Swansea City have this evening confirmed that Brendan Rodgers has accepted a deal to become the new Liverpool manager. After a day of endless online speculation, the Welsh club have finally released a statement, with club chairman Huw Jenkins admitting the Irishman will now take the reins at the Merseyside giants:

I was contacted by Liverpool last night and they expressed their wish to speak to Brendan regarding their vacancy. I had a discussion with Brendan to talk about their interest and his views on whether he wanted to speak to Liverpool. He expressed his wish with me to do that and he has spoken to Liverpool today. Following on from discussions with Liverpool’s owners, Brendan has informed us that he would like to take up their offer to manage Liverpool.

Rodgers leaves Swansea after a hugely successful first campaign back in the top flight, where the Welsh club finished 11th and won a host of plaudits for their brand of possession football.

The former Chelsea reserve team boss will arrive at Liverpool with a huge task ahead of him. Despite the Carling Cup triumph and narrow FA Cup Final defeat, Liverpool undoubtedly define the term “sleeping giant” and Rodgers will be expected to not only bring his passing game to the existing squad but also build a set of players capable of challenging for the top four and, presumably, the title. Rodgers will feel a different kind of pressure for the next few seasons.

In Fantasy terms this appointment is an interesting one. Swansea were unique in the Premier League, in terms of starving opponents of possession and pressing them when without the ball. The involvement of the back four, particularly the full-backs, in pushing forward to support the midfield was also a feature of Swansea’s play that, in all likelihood, we’ll see Rodgers attempt to instill at Anfield.

Dominant possession, a slow patient build up from the back through central playmakers, with foraging full-backs providing width and, significantly, one central striker with a support midfielder, were the mainstays of Swansea’s game. It will be interesting to see how Rodgers can mould the existing Liverpool squad in this image and who he targets to help him make his mark. The role of Luis Suarez, in particular, will be intriguing.

The Swansea squad, with Leon Britton and Joe Allen set to be early targets, are surely set to feel the effects of Rodgers’ departure. The Welsh club not only have to replace one of the brightest young managers, they will surely have to fend off inevitable enquiries for key players from the former man in charge – their upcoming season now looks just as much uncertain as Liverpool’s.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Given - Chalkias

    J. Alba - Maggio - Gebre Selassie - Anyukov - Debuchy

    Srna - Larsson - Pirlo - Ozil - Kuba

    Gekas - Benzema - Kerzhakov

Figured i want to try and win the whole thing, so gone for something abit different

did you go anyukov over zhirkov for differential reasons or..? and it's certainly not the typical team posted on here, but looks pretty decent. however i do have a question for you. would you rather have zhirkov/anyukov or barzagli?

Sounds good, especially as it looks like Jelavic will be starting.

High ownership on him shouldn't be a problem as most of those will be casuals.

What week you planning to WC? I like it though.
I know Kadlec is pretty much universal pick on here but defender on pens, not massively dear and if he gets nothing you can sub him out - whats not to love?

I guess the fact that he does play on Day 1 is a really valuable plus point, I just dont want to be blinded by him and not see the full options available.

Planning to play it in week 2 at the moment. I just don't see the appeal anymore, as he'd need to get the pen in the 1st week, and Czech's are possibly the weakest in their group. Another reason is what you've said, everyone else has him, so i've gone for the cheaper option from the same defence. Done some reading, and he seems to have great attacking potential too.

        Hows your squad looking partner?

Honestly not overly prepared for it yet - don't see the point in getting too set on a squad when there can be injuries everything will change.

Fancy the look of Young and Huntelaar as punts at the moment - possibly VdV if Sneijder is out.

I'm pretty much only going to be playing for this tournament so we can work some form of tactics out based around complementing what you want to pick.

Yeah that's fair enough. Sounds like a good tactic, i think waiting till the friendlies is best, although i'm set on most of these players. Only thing to disrupt it will be injuries and there's not long left. I think you should see my squad, and pick the players you want aswell from it. I have Se lassie, so i guess you could get Kadlec. I have no Dutch cover, so you could do something about that, same with Spain attack if you fancied and Lew/Ibrahimovic. Just a rough plan i guess, plenty of time to decide for you.

I agree with Carrick. He was brilliant this season - would have been one of my first names of the team sheet. He's obviously spoke with Roy who said he was going to be a squad player (behind Barry) and thought that it's not worth it he might as well enjoy a summer with his family and probably extend his career to boot.

        Here's a good article.

        http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/may/28/five-things-learned-euro-2012-friendlies

It's totally ridiculous that Carrick isn't going. Whatever he feels about sitting on the bench, and he should offer himself up for selection, he should really be starting ahead of every midfielder. We've got to be keeping hold of the ball, why is this so undervalued in this country. Norway had 56% of the ball against us, and they haven't even qualified for this tournament, nor any tournament for 12 years.

          Good article.

Yeah it's dumb. He would have been my third name on the team sheet (2nd with Rooney out). He just offers so much composure on the ball that we don't have. He's a far superior player to Parker - there's much more to be said for not needing to make a challenge because you are positionally aware than chasing the ball and making last ditch blocks and challenges all game long.

Ah, Wesley - news I didn't want to hear. He's in pretty much every dream team I've entered 🙁

On a different note, you have to feel for Frank Lampard. A true professional who has probably played his last game for England. Even worse that it's Jordan Henderson replacing him. Don't like the look of this Liverpool contingent which is infesting itself within the England squad...

Here's my piece on Italy. I realise that these write-up are losing a bit of relevance because the FFS writers have passed me out but hey, I wanna do something good for the community 😉 Especially the guys setting up the FFS Euro 2012 tournament. Please accept Pork Pie Sausage Roll and I's application. Please!

    THE DEFENCE

If you’ve already decided that you will use your wildcard immediately after the first round of games, then investment in the Italian defence before Gameweek 1 is next to pointless. Their first game of the group sees them take on Spain but their fixtures improve considerably when they face Croatia and the Republic of Ireland in their second and third matches respectively.

In goals, it’s inevitable that Gianluigi Buffon will be Cesare Prandelli's first choice ‘keeper. Buffon has always been first choice throughout the campaign, barring injury, and his potential for clean sheets looks as good as any goalkeeper’s from Gameweek 2 onwards. He will cost you 6.5 million, though, which is a big drawback.

The best option out of all Italian defenders has to be Giorgio Chiellini. The Juventus man is currently struggling with a thigh injury but has stated himself that he will be ready for the competition. Despite often posing a threat with his headers from set-pieces, Chiellini hasn’t scored an international goal since November 2009 so 7.0 million seems a little too much to pay. Having said that, he does seem to be the only defender that is 100% nailed on (when fit) so should prove a decent option after the Spanish encounter is out of the way. Chiellini played 8 qualifying games during the campaign, with Italy keeping a clean sheet in 7 of those matches.

Elsewhere in defence, Palermo left-back Federico Balzaretti should be in Italy’s first team for the group stages. Since Domenico Criscito has withdrawn from the squad, Balzaretti looks set to take his place and at 5.5 million would be an excellent choice for Gameweeks 2 and 3 if his starts are assured.

    THE ATTACK

Having scored just 25 goals in their previous 18 games (including friendlies), the hefty prices of the Italian attackers are quite the turn-off. After a great domestic season, Andrea Pirlo is attracting a respectable amount of attention despite the price tag of 8.0 million. The Juventus man racked up 3 goals and 13 assists in this season’s Serie A campaign and has set-piece duties in the bag so fantasy points for the 33 year-old may just be on the cards.

Up front, Antonio Cassano has scored 6 goals in his last 11 international appearances so he has the best track record of scoring goals for the current Italian side. Unfortunately, due to a heart problem, Cassano hasn’t played for Italy since October so many managers won’t feel confident investing 8.0 million in the Milan forward.

Likely to lead the line for Italy in Group C is Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli, who is the mother of all risks in Fantasy Euro 2012. At 8.5 million, he is more expensive than the likes of Robert Lewandowski who has shown far better consistency. However, Balotelli has shown that he can explode with goals, especially when all the attention surrounds him. Euro 2012 will provide the perfect spotlight for the temperamental Italian. Of course, he is just as likely to see red for an idiotic challenge as he is to score tons of goals. The risk is a massive one, but it could be handsomely rewarded.

    IN SUMMARY

    • The Italian defence looks great. Buffon and Chiellini could provide returns for their money after Gameweek 1.
    • Balzaretti is the best cheap defensive option.
    • Goals won’t be flying in, but Pirlo seems to be the Italian attacking option with the greatest chance of goals and assists.

Just because he's on my mind, Balzaretti looks a decent option. Italy still have another friendly (earthquake permitting) before the Euros so if he plays all that match, he's a great pick imo. 5.5 mill for an ITA defender is a bargain
