The Republic of Ireland grind out a goalless draw in Hungary to record back-to-back clean sheets ahead of their opener with Croatia. Joris Mathijsen hopes to be fit for Holland’s opener with Denmark, Italy have concerns over Mario Balotelli and Andrea Barzagli, while Tomas Rosicky returns to full training for the Czech Republic:

Hungary 0 Republic of Ireland 0
Giovanni Trapattoni’s side chalked up their second clean sheet in a row after recording a goalless draw in the Ferenc Puskas Stadion. While they impressed at the back, Ireland’s toils in front of goal continued, though; they have scored just three goals in their last four matches and, with Group C matches against Croatia, Spain and Italy, Fantasy managers will struggle to justify any investment in the likes of Robbie Keane. Shay Given and John O’Shea both returned from injury and the former, priced at 4.5 in the McDonald’s game, looks a decent prospect, with the advantage of save points to offset any loss of clean sheets. Trapattoni revealed beforehand that his starting XI will be the same lineup to face Croatia next Sunday, with players such as James McClean destined to play a bit-part role, despite impressing for Sunderland under Martin O’Neill in the final two-thirds of last season.

Republic of Ireland Starting XI: Given (Westwood 45); O’Shea, Dunne, St Ledger, Ward; Duff (Hunt 63), Andrews (Gibson 66), Whelan (Green 85), McGeady; Keane (Cox 61), Doyle (Walters 45).

Other News
Joris Mathijsen hopes he will be fit and available for Holland’s group B opener with Denmark next Saturday. Priced at 6.5 in the McDonald’s game, the centre-half picked up a hamstring problem against Bulgaria last month and has failed to feature in his nation’s last couple of matches, with Wilfred Bouma stepping in alongside Johnny Heitinga, but Mathijsen is convinced he is on course for a return:

The first test in the dressing room seemed to indicate that there was no evidence of a tear, only a strain, and the MRI scan happily confirmed that. I have been able to sprint again and it felt good. If I can join the group training on Tuesday or Wednesday it should be sufficient to be back for the Denmark game. The way I feel now, I will be fine.

Italy’s Andrea Barzagli could be set to miss the group stages after picking up a calf strain. The Juventus defender sustained the problem in the recent 3-0 loss to Russia and, with a three-week absence likely, he is to be monitored until Friday – Cesare Prandelli will then make a decision whether to replace him in the squad, subject to Uefa’s approval. With Domenico Criscito already out due to a match-fixing scandal and Giorgio Chiellini fighting for full fitness, the problems at the back are clearly building ahead of their opener against Spain.

Prandelli’s problems continued with the news that Mario Balotelli pulled out of a training session after picking up a knee knock. Medical staff are currently examining the City forward, though it’s thought the problem isn’t too serious.

Croatia were dealt a blow yesterday with the news than Ivica Olic has been ruled out of the upcoming tournament. The forward lasted just 26 minutes against Norway at the weekend before being subbed off with a torn hamstring – Nikica Kalinic has been called up as a replacement, with the team doctor admitting:

Medical tests surprisingly showed a rupture and partial tear of the muscle and his recovery is going to take from four to six weeks.

Michal Bilek has confirmed Tomas Rosicky has returned to full fitness and is available for the Czech Republic’s opener with Russia on Friday. The Arsenal man has failed to feature in his nation’s recent friendlies due to a calf problem but returned to training yesterday without any problems. Priced at 7.0 in the McDonald’s game, Rosicky is the sixth most popular midfielder, with his 19% of owners no doubt relieved over his manager’s positive comments:

All my squad is fit. Tomas will play in the opening match. He showed his class during the training session. When he gets the ball, he can create space, make that clever pass, and he is quick on the ball. You could see today how much he is looking forward to playing. I believe he will increase the quality of our lineup.

Sweden received some mixed news on the forward front yesterday. Markus Rosenberg has been ruled out of this evening’s friendly with Serbia after picking up a knee problem in the 3-2 win over Iceland, though is expected to be back “in a few days”, according to team doctors. Johan Elmander, who has yet to feature due to a foot injury, has revealed he is on course to be ready for the opener against co-hosts Ukraine next Monday, going on to say:

“It feels a bit stiff and painful. If it continues like this, then absolutely I’ll be ready.

Nani, Joao Moutinho and Fabio Coentrao all missed training for Portugal yesterday prior to the squad’s departure for Poland. The trio are thought to have picked up foot, heel and hip injuries respectively – all three players’ problems are said to be minor, though, with their absence no more than a precaution.

Laurent Blanc revealed he intends to field a strong team for tonight’s friendly with Estonia. The France boss was slightly cagey over his tactics but admitted he already has one eye on his side’s opener against England and refused to rule Yann M’Vila out of the reckoning for next Monday’s match, going on to say:

It’s not certain that tomorrow’s team will be the one that starts against England. But the idea is to put out a team that will resemble the one that will face England as closely as possible.

Llorente has only played 45 minutes in the last 6 games for Spain. His last appearance being the 5-0 victory against Venezuela where he was substituted at half time, failing to score and Soldado came on and scored a second half hat-trick!

Still, even if Klose does start his game time will be limited, sure Gomez will be coming on at some point.

It refers mainly to defenders and midfielders.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Gomez does start anyway, but it remains a huge risk and Klose will be eating up his game time regardless of whether he starts or just comes of the bench for him.

I would think so too Evs but a lot of stuff I've read has Loew relying on Klose's experience for this tournament.

I kind of agree with that as Gomez needs about 5 or 6 chances to score whereas Klose only needs 1. In a group where Germany are probably going to have to score a lot of goals to win games I'm not sure they can afford to risk relying on Gomez's strike ratio.

I can see some interesting “stick or switch” dilemmas with the managerial and captain substitutions.

Do you settle for a goal from your skipper on Day 1? If not, what if you only get an assist on Day 2?

It will be the opposite of having points on your bench.

As I learned from the CL game, Goal and assist are very good. Id stick with a goal when it was the last day and I only have 1 captain option to go with. Also if I dont have a H2H to win :).
But for the first day id switch up from a goal since the best captain options are probably in day 2, 3 and 4

Hey TM, just seen your post...

No subs in the Sun game, you just pick 11 and then get to change up to 3 players during 3 windows. Basically, your starting 11 plays the first 2 group games, then you get 3 changes for the final group game, 3 more for the Quarter Finals, and then a final 3 more for the Semis/Finals. Other main point to note is there is no points for assists, so it's all about goals and clean sheets in this game.

Perhaps no Benzema is a good idea - France don't score that freely and England are normally decent at the back. Trouble with Germany is which striker to go for? Aren't Klose and Gomez both fighting it out for the central role?

Also, I don't know much about Shirokov - reasons for going with him? Larsson seems decent as he's on all set pieces for Sweden, so could nick a goal or 2 from freekicks/penalties. No Spain cover is also a worry, but who to go for that scores goals? Surely not Fernando....? 😉

Stick with Xabi Alonso, I can't see Iniesta outscoring him by enough to be worth the extra 1.5m. Xabi Alonso may even be a more reliable point scorer.

Getting close to my Finished team now ,any feedback very much so appreciated,
    Given , Chaka
Molson,  jescott ,  stricnic , k papa, perquis.
    Sneidjer , Ozil , young , Iniesta , Shirkov.
    Muller , Rvp , Jelly.
1 or 2 can easily become nailed on players if need be, ie
Chaka and Rvp , by spending high in latter areas as time nears I can easily shift to suit. Anyways it looks like W/c early should be order of the day. At this point the fabric of the team needs to start evolving , any opinions ?

Also, best Spanish attacking player to get? Want at least one and choices are:

    Mids - Iniesta (6.5), Xavi (6.5), Alonso (4.5), Fabregas (4.5)
    Strikers - Torres (6.0), Lorrente (6.0), Silva (4.5)

fabregas probably wont play so don't get him. torres is more likely to start but unsure so don't risk it on him or llorente. in all honesty i think silva is a bargain for 4.5 but he does take up a striker spot of yours.

Demi said it nicely a few days ago, Llorente has fitness problems. So maybe Torres or Negredo will start day 1. But after that it could be any of them.

My own opinion: If Torres starts, than Spain could not go past group stages, since the man is horrible. That is why I give him 60 minutes in the first game and sub appearances in others.

Buffon and Lloris are both 3.5m, which leaves one of these combos?

      Well.

Now that Barzagli's out, it would default to:

      Maggio Bonucci Chiellini Balzaretti

However, after the 3-0 defeat by Russia, Prandelli said he might have to change things up. The sugggestion was that they might go 352 with Bonucci, Barzagli & Chiellini playing at CB as they have been at Juve.

They won't be able to do that unless they replace Barzagli, or his injury turns out to be insignificant.

If they do go 352 it might jeopardize Maggio or Balzaretti. Maggio apparently played poorly in the Russia game. Abate or Giacherrini could come in as wingbacks.

criscito is reportedly promised a place back if any italian defender gets injured and if hes back hes nailed on ...
chiellini , bonnuci and maggio are nailed on ... the last spot will be a fight between abate and balzaretti
keep in mind that italy might play 3-5-2 and giacherenni might be in the line ups instead of those 2 because he is more familiar with this new tactic.
      -------------buffon---------------
      ---(unidentified)* ---- Bonnuci ------ Chiellini
      ----maggio----pirlo--marchisio-----De rossi*----balzaretti/abate/giacherenni
      ----Cassano------Ballotelli----
De rossi trained as a defender early this morning considering he played in the back 4 of roma this year ... if de rossi goes back to play in the back 3 i guess montilivio will replace him in midfield .

      2 from Eduardo/Jelavić/Mandžukić

Eduardo - in the best form of the 3 but still not a certain starter
Jelavić - seems to have the backing of Bilic but has never produced for Croatia
Mandžukić - poor form but a regular under Bilic so wouldn't rule him out

Conclusion: avoid them all as they are not guaranteed starters and have a tough group

Mandžukić is probably still the most likely to start actually.

In my opinion, Mandzukic WILL start. 🙂

There'll be a whole lot of subbing going on between the 3 of them I think.

I think Mandžukić and Jelavić will start against Ireland.
