The Republic of Ireland grind out a goalless draw in Hungary to record back-to-back clean sheets ahead of their opener with Croatia. Joris Mathijsen hopes to be fit for Holland’s opener with Denmark, Italy have concerns over Mario Balotelli and Andrea Barzagli, while Tomas Rosicky returns to full training for the Czech Republic:

Hungary 0 Republic of Ireland 0
Giovanni Trapattoni’s side chalked up their second clean sheet in a row after recording a goalless draw in the Ferenc Puskas Stadion. While they impressed at the back, Ireland’s toils in front of goal continued, though; they have scored just three goals in their last four matches and, with Group C matches against Croatia, Spain and Italy, Fantasy managers will struggle to justify any investment in the likes of Robbie Keane. Shay Given and John O’Shea both returned from injury and the former, priced at 4.5 in the McDonald’s game, looks a decent prospect, with the advantage of save points to offset any loss of clean sheets. Trapattoni revealed beforehand that his starting XI will be the same lineup to face Croatia next Sunday, with players such as James McClean destined to play a bit-part role, despite impressing for Sunderland under Martin O’Neill in the final two-thirds of last season.

Republic of Ireland Starting XI: Given (Westwood 45); O’Shea, Dunne, St Ledger, Ward; Duff (Hunt 63), Andrews (Gibson 66), Whelan (Green 85), McGeady; Keane (Cox 61), Doyle (Walters 45).

Other News
Joris Mathijsen hopes he will be fit and available for Holland’s group B opener with Denmark next Saturday. Priced at 6.5 in the McDonald’s game, the centre-half picked up a hamstring problem against Bulgaria last month and has failed to feature in his nation’s last couple of matches, with Wilfred Bouma stepping in alongside Johnny Heitinga, but Mathijsen is convinced he is on course for a return:

The first test in the dressing room seemed to indicate that there was no evidence of a tear, only a strain, and the MRI scan happily confirmed that. I have been able to sprint again and it felt good. If I can join the group training on Tuesday or Wednesday it should be sufficient to be back for the Denmark game. The way I feel now, I will be fine.

Italy’s Andrea Barzagli could be set to miss the group stages after picking up a calf strain. The Juventus defender sustained the problem in the recent 3-0 loss to Russia and, with a three-week absence likely, he is to be monitored until Friday – Cesare Prandelli will then make a decision whether to replace him in the squad, subject to Uefa’s approval. With Domenico Criscito already out due to a match-fixing scandal and Giorgio Chiellini fighting for full fitness, the problems at the back are clearly building ahead of their opener against Spain.

Prandelli’s problems continued with the news that Mario Balotelli pulled out of a training session after picking up a knee knock. Medical staff are currently examining the City forward, though it’s thought the problem isn’t too serious.

Croatia were dealt a blow yesterday with the news than Ivica Olic has been ruled out of the upcoming tournament. The forward lasted just 26 minutes against Norway at the weekend before being subbed off with a torn hamstring – Nikica Kalinic has been called up as a replacement, with the team doctor admitting:

Medical tests surprisingly showed a rupture and partial tear of the muscle and his recovery is going to take from four to six weeks.

Michal Bilek has confirmed Tomas Rosicky has returned to full fitness and is available for the Czech Republic’s opener with Russia on Friday. The Arsenal man has failed to feature in his nation’s recent friendlies due to a calf problem but returned to training yesterday without any problems. Priced at 7.0 in the McDonald’s game, Rosicky is the sixth most popular midfielder, with his 19% of owners no doubt relieved over his manager’s positive comments:

All my squad is fit. Tomas will play in the opening match. He showed his class during the training session. When he gets the ball, he can create space, make that clever pass, and he is quick on the ball. You could see today how much he is looking forward to playing. I believe he will increase the quality of our lineup.

Sweden received some mixed news on the forward front yesterday. Markus Rosenberg has been ruled out of this evening’s friendly with Serbia after picking up a knee problem in the 3-2 win over Iceland, though is expected to be back “in a few daysâ€, according to team doctors. Johan Elmander, who has yet to feature due to a foot injury, has revealed he is on course to be ready for the opener against co-hosts Ukraine next Monday, going on to say:

“It feels a bit stiff and painful. If it continues like this, then absolutely I’ll be ready.

Nani, Joao Moutinho and Fabio Coentrao all missed training for Portugal yesterday prior to the squad’s departure for Poland. The trio are thought to have picked up foot, heel and hip injuries respectively – all three players’ problems are said to be minor, though, with their absence no more than a precaution.

Laurent Blanc revealed he intends to field a strong team for tonight’s friendly with Estonia. The France boss was slightly cagey over his tactics but admitted he already has one eye on his side’s opener against England and refused to rule Yann M’Vila out of the reckoning for next Monday’s match, going on to say:

It’s not certain that tomorrow’s team will be the one that starts against England. But the idea is to put out a team that will resemble the one that will face England as closely as possible.

Well that auction was a little more satisfying with only 5 Managers and only allowed 2 players from a team

Jinswick, you still here? I'm also playing the Sun game. Dont you reckon either Benzema or Young could be good striker picks? Although they play each other in the first game, their next 2 are against Ukraine and Sweden who are both renowned for being leaky at the back, so good chance for either to score.

Hey Cat, just seen this. I think both could be great picks, but I'm just not convinced either of their teams score that many goals in comparison to the likes of Germany, Spain & Holland. Young is good value at 3.5m, but he takes up a valuable striker spot. Also, since assists dont count then his corner taking is pretty damaging.

Good points. The trouble with Germany and Spain, and Holland to a certain extent, is knowing who's going to be main striker - although I have gone for RVP. I've decided to take a chance on Benzema, it all depends which French team turns up on the day, I just hope not the one from the 2010 World Cup 😉

Gomez too risky with Klose eating up his gametime. Maybe switch to Muller?

Try to get Ribery instead of Larsson.

That's true - also perhaps overkill given I also have Ozil?

I don't really fancy French strikers - the don't seem to score many.

        What about Larsson & Gomez -> VDV/Snieder & Silva ??

VDV won't be starting... Affelay looks like a better choice than him. Sneijder will be starting for sure so go for him if you can afford it.

Ribery is a must have for me though.

Muller is as nailed as far as I know.

I'm sure this has been discussed before on the board, but anyone's input would be appreciated: I'm in a complicated manually-run auction league using the McDonalds scoring system. My personal pre-auction strategy was to avoid the big-nation duos of Klose/Gomez and Van Persie/Huntelaar since there are doubts surrounding their playing time.

Naturally, after the auction I end up with Gomez AND Huntelaar. Great plan execution there. I also have Ronaldo and Jelavic as FWs (we have 18-man squads of which 3 players are "inactive" for each matchday). Information from a German source also indicates that they are going to go with "experience" (read: Klose) as opposed to club form (read: Gomez).

The question is which three forwards I should start for Matchday 1 (with the fourth one being inactive). A subquestion to that is captaincy.

Right now I'm leaning towards Ronaldo (c), Gomez, Huntelaar, with Jelavic inactive (I have Rakitic and Srna who could potentially assist any goals that he might score...although that's clutching at straws I know.

Hi guys, would appreciate it if you could give me any suggestions for my team.

    Szczęsny (Pletikosa)

    Anyukov, Papa, Strinic, Olsson, Debuchy

    Ozil, Iniesta, Affelay, Shirokov, Yarmolenko

    Ibra, RVP, Lewandowski

That's the squad for now, pretty happy with my forwards and midfielders, any suggestions for defence and keepers?

    Thanks a lot!

1.0m to upgrade this lot - any ideas? Was thinking either

    a) Silva (4.5) -> Podolski (5.5) / Mueller (5.5),
    b) VDV (5.0) -> Sneider (6.0) / Robben (5.5) / Nasri (5.5), or
    c) Silva (4.5) & VDV (5.0) -> Nasri (5.5) & Robben (5.5)

    Lloris (3.5)
    Lescott (2.5), Bonucci (2.5), Zhirkov (2.5), Piszczek (2.5)
    Ozil (6.5), Iniesta (6.5), VDV (5.0)
    RVP (6.5), Ronaldo (6.5), Silva (4.5)

its surely gotta be B! vdv probably wont start. i'd go for sneijder or robben

and tbh i'd probably downgrade ronaldo to podolski or mueller and then upgrade lloris to casillas perhaps (dont know the prices though)

Ah, didn't realise VDV doesn't start for Holland!

Thing with the SUN game is there are no points for assists, and Ronaldo is uber greedy and on most freekicks and pens. Does the no points for assists make Iniesta less attractive?

the starting lineup isn't for sure but most likely it'll be

          rvp
          afellay sneijder robben

though theres a small possibility vdv or kuyt could start on the wing instead of afellay
ohhh I see. its just i'd be tempted to get a german forward tbh and casillas too. do you get to change players after the group stages or are you stuck with the same squad throughout?

yeahh probably. i'd try to do vdv and iniesta to robben and sneijder tbh

You just pick 11 players, then get 3 transfers at 3 different stages. The first 3 transfers are after the first 2 group games, the second 3 free transfers are after the 3rd group game, and the final 3 transfer are for after the quarters.

I feel like I need at least some Spain coverage in attack - who's gonna get the goals??? I don't think Casillas is worth the extra money at the back personally.

            What about:

            Szczesny
            Lescott, Bonucci, Zhirkov, Debuchy
            Ozil, Sneijder, Iniesta
            RVP, Ronaldo, Podolski

Or is that too weak at the back?

    LONG POST ALERT

Klose or Gomez? Miroslav Klose fill 34 years same day that Germany meets Portugal in their opening match in European Championship on the 9th June. Certainly not in Klose native Poland, but that the EM 'hjemmbane'kommer to mean much for the target machine, there is no doubt. Check these numbers: 116/63. It is mind-boggling statistics Klose for the German national team. While he was at club level has largely scored in every three games (Werder Bremen excepted), he has tapped into 63 goals since his debut on the national team 11 years ago. Only 5 goals up to Gerd Müller!

Still, enough to think Mario Gomez means it is his turn now, after an effective season in Bayern Munich with 26 league goals (only beaten by Huntelaar). When doubt still struggling in Löw, he has probably two reasons why. Gomez did not deliver in the Euro 08 and World Cup 10, and more importantly, Klose fits better as a striker playing in this German team's impressive attack pattern. Gomez is a goalgetter, but not much more. Klose is good at linking up with teammates and also a leader of the team on the pitch. Klose is rusty after a few months out in the spring, and it can be Gomez' opportunity .

If Klose is 100%, I think Loew picks the veteran again.

I prefer a better midfield and spending a little less in defence.

Ribery is more essential than Sneijder in my opinion. Affelay can replace McGeady or Larsson.

he is looking nailed on and I am really tempted for the same comp. But if he doesn't start, you can't make any trannies until after the groups, right?

        Correct.

Therefore a risk. May play a more defensive team against Germany

Yeah, that's the issue eh. What's your starting 11? Mine is currently this, but I keep tweaking!

        Lloris
        Lescott, Bonucci, Zhirkov, K Papadoupoulos
        Sneijder, Ozil, Iniesta
        RVP, Ronaldo, Podolski

        Bank 0.5m

The Greek defender is a bit worrying, but there's not much out there for 1.5m or less!
