This evening’s couple of Group D clashes brought the curtain down Matchday 1 and affords Fantasy managers the chance to reassess their captaincy options ahead of the next four days’ worth of fixtures. Many will be wielding wildcards, while others will bring a more patient approach as we roll out the Captain Poll for Day 1 of Matchday 2:

Croatia’s Mario Mandzukic and Russia’s Alan Dzagoev were the top scorers in the first batch of matches, returning 13 points each after both bagged a brace against Republic of Ireland and Czech Republic respectively.

Dzagoev is handed the chance to continue his form as Russia square up to Poland in tomorrow’s evening kick-off. Roman Shirokov and Andrei Arshavin all picked up points from Dick Advocaat’s starting XI in the 4-1 win and will also be under consideration for the armband, while Roman Pavlyuchenko’s goal and assist contribution from the bench will perhaps cast doubts over Aleksandr Kerzhakov’s starting role, after the latter missed seven chances to find the net last Friday.

For the co-hosts, Robert Lewandowski will be looking to get amongst the goals once again, after notching in Poland’s opening day clash with Greece. Jakub Blaszczykowski provided an assist against the Greeks and will be in the mix, while Ludovic Obraniak’s set-piece duties perhaps boost his chance s of returns.

Elsewhere in Group A, the Czech Republic will perhaps be reliant on the likes of Vaclav Pilar and Jaroslav Plasil to pick up the points again. The former notched his side’s consolation in the Russia defeat, while Plasil bagged an assist after providing seven goalscoring opportunities. Tomas Rosicky’s role in the hole and Milan Baros’ place as the lone forward in a 4-2-3-1 system will also afford the pair a chance to impress.

For Greece, Dimitris Salpingidis’ contribution from the bench in the Poland game may well see him start. A 45 minute second half appearance harvested a goal, with a point also picked up for earning a penalty. Theofanis Gekas and Giorgos Samaras should maintain their roles in the front three, with the creativity of Giorgos Karagounis always liable to provide a spark for Fernando Santos’ side.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Order of Extreme Valour - FFS Euro 2012 - Matchday 1 Award

(READ THIS FIRST: THIS IS THE AWARD FOR PLAYERS OF FFS EURO 2012 ONLY AND DOES NOT INCLUDE PEOPLE FROM THE FRIENDLY WORLD CUP!!!!!!!!!!!!! THERE WILL BE A SEPARATE AWARD FOR THAT. THANK YOU.)

After 4 days and countless feats of valour it's come down to this. Who made the bravest pick of Matchday 1? Let me start by applauding the great bravery of our Euro 2012 managers. The field was littered with mad picks, and to my delight a proper handful paid off. So successful were the picks that I could not consider many unfancied differentials who returned assists - these include McGeady, Konoplyanka and Yarmolenko. It's a tricky task judging from so many genuine contenders, but I hope you'll agree I made the fairest choice!

I judged the award by the rules posted on the FFS UEFA website (http://uefaffs.weebly.com/7/post/2012/06/the-order-of-extreme-valour.html). To recap:

A “successful gamble” is defined as a single player choice that returns an unexpectedly high number of points. The awards will be given on these criteria:
    - Underappreciation
    - Overachievement
    - Underdog team
    - Captaincy

Since the award was very close, I will make honorary mentions to the following first:
    * Mark and TommyTour for selecting Danish keeper Andersen (7 points, 4.9%) who in true underdog spirit kept a clean sheet and 5 saves against the heavily fancied Dutch.
    * Mark for selecting English defender Joleon Lescott (8 points, 9.5%). While he undoubtedly picked him in hope of a clean sheet and some recovered balls, what Joleon actually delivered was a firm header to give England the lead and a very tasty payoff.

    And now for the winner...

    * The winner is Ginkapo for selecting and captaining Irish defender Sean St Ledger (8 x 2 points, 1.1%) who headed Ireland's equalizer against Croatia. Not only a huge differential, not only an underdog, but a 16 point captain.

Ginkapo, savour your moment of glory. Don't switch off though - the race for the Matchday 2 award begins tomorrow!

Thank you all for your valiant efforts in making this a very special Matchday 1. May these shining heroes inspire you to feats of risky valour in Matchday 2!
Stay tuned for our Day 1 Report and preview of Day 2!

Malafeev is best value keeper he is 5.0 and all the Russian defenders are above. Berezutsky is 5.5 and isn't getting RB. Igransevich is best bet by a mile but he is 6.5 I would love to get Malafeev and spend the big cash on Italian defenders, cause Buffon is 6.5 too. Its money games.

Anyone has some info about the goalkeeper situation? Its logically to continue with Malafeev cause Akinfeev had a lot of injuries recently or he is the best Russian goalkeeper and is picked when ever he is healthy?

          Anyone? Thanks

It's not worth the risk IMO. I have Chalkias with 0.5 to spare so I can Sifakis if Chalkias is dropped as we will know Greece line-up before deadline, we won't know Russian line-up

      similar to me,
a few things i noticed on my team

if you pick young & lescott, you can't get rooney in gw3 without a hit due to the 2 player rule
assume you are going to captain cr7 against andersen (assuming chalkias doesnt keep a cleanie)
is pilar really a prospect? his anytime scorer odds are 8 at betfair even though he scored in gw1....a fluke?

Apparently pacey and direct? For 5 its worth a punt for a winger/attacking mid? Especially given greece's 2nd choice Cb's

      Alba instead of Boateng.
Don't like Ninis and would downgrade to a 4m mid to upgrade elsewhere.
Also I'd want at least one player from the Netherlands vs Germany game.

any italian experts know about cassano? Will he be taken off early every game? 65 Mins worries me somewhat with his limited time on the pitch

Thinking about Cassano, would he start even if Di Natale is put in?

i thought he was def starter? surely more chance of balotelli getting dropped

personally think balo and cassano start next game

Cassano should start. Probably going to play longer against a weaker defence. If Di Natale starts might drop in behind him a tad though.

    Chesney/Given
    Lescott Alba Zhirkov Willems Maniatis
    Ozil Young Ribery Affelay Shirokov
    Benzema Lewy Jelly

Not going to WC yet, just shipping Chesney.

    1) Anderson

    or

    2) Chalkias

Have 0.5 in the bank, but can't see any other strong options.

I would pick Cech or Rui Patricio for GW2.

I currently have Özil & Podolski but dont know whether or not to stick with Podolski. Tbh, the main reason i have him is because im and Arsenal supporter and i am a but biased because he is now one of my favorite players. Lol

    Should I wildcard this team?

    Given Szczesny
M Olsson Zhirkov Strinic Kadlec Papadopoulos
    Young Ozil Andrews Dzagoev Sneijder
    RVP Ibra Lewandowski

Or just do something like Szez & RVP > Buffon & Benzema for a hit?

The thing is I quite like the idea of getting some Spain players in.

I'm stuck lads, pick your favourite option.

    1. Ozil & Elm –> Pirlo & Fabregas -3
    2. van Persie -> Ronaldo
    3. van Persie & Elm -> Cassano & Iniesta -3
    4. Affelay & Perquis -> Fabregas & Maniatis -3
