Danny Welbeck’s sublime back-heel hands England victory and sends Sweden crashing out of Euro 2012. Andy Carroll and Theo Walcott also pick up the plaudits in the five-goal thriller while, in the storm-delayed earlier kick-off, France see off tournament co-hosts Ukraine 2-0, with Karim Benzema setting up both goals for Les Bleus:

France 2 Ukraine 0
Laurent Blanc made two changes from the side that drew against England for last night’s game, with Jeremy Menez and Gael Clichy replacing Florent Malouda and Patrice Evra respectively. The alteration up front allowed France to line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Samir Nasri behind Karim Benzema and Menez on the right. Benzema provided the assists for both goals, with Menez notching the opener – the latter’s classification as a forward in the McDonald’s game may cause many Fantasy managers to overlook him, however, despite his 7.4 price tag. Benzema looks the forward of choice but Menez clearly offers a differential option if he can maintain his place in Blanc’s starting XI, with a mere 0.2% ownership.

Benzema has three shots and provided a trio of goalscoring chances, though Nasri and Franck Ribery were rather disappointing in the change of system. Both had just a shot apiece, though the Bayern man was the better creator, laying on four opportunities to find the net for his team mates. Alou Diarra’s role in the double pivot looks under threat after Yann M’Vila returned to action midway through the second half. The latter is a firm favourite of Blanc’s and, with Yohan Cabaye grabbing a goal and hitting the post, the Newcastle man’s starting role also looks assured.

The French now need just a point in their final game against Sweden to progress – indeed, as this handy guide indicates, the only way they can be eliminated is if Ukraine beat England and France lose to the Swedes by a margin that would make their goal difference inferior to that of Roy Hodgson’s side.

The tournament co-hosts fielded the same starting XI that defeated Sweden 2-1 in their opener on Monday evening. Once again, Yevhen Konoplyanka had more attempts than any team mate – after producing five shots against the Swedes, he fired three efforts last night, though has failed to muster a single attempt on target. Andriy Voronin was hauled off at half-time, allowing Marko Devic to line up alongside Andriy Shevchenko up front but Ukraine’s failure to find the net meant that France were one of only two sides – along with Spain – to return a clean sheet for their Fantasy owners in Matchday Two. Given that they now need to beat England to qualify, yesterday’s lack of goal power is a real worry for Oleg Blokhin and he may well consider ringing the changes for Tuesday’s crucial encounter.

England 3 Sweden 2
Roy Hodgson make just one change to the XI that started against France, with Andy Carroll coming in for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The move saw Ashley Young shift out left, with the Liverpool man partnering Danny Welbeck up top – both forwards grabbed a goal apiece in the 3-2 win and, with Wayne Rooney’s suspension now served, the England manager has a selection headache ahead of the final group game against Ukraine. Rooney will surely play and, with a mere 1% ownership, looks a strong differential captaincy choice for the showdown, leaving Carroll and Welbeck to likely battle it out for the other slot.

Theo Walcott’s goal and assist contribution from the bench also makes him one to consider and perhaps places question marks against James Milner’s place on the right flank. Coming in at just 7.9 in the McDonald’s game, the Arsenal man made a more than persuasive case for his first-team inclusion next time round. Steven Gerrard once again picked up the points – the Liverpool skipper has now returned an assist in back-to-back games after Carroll nodded home his cross for the opener.

Erik Hamren made three changes from the side that slumped to defeat against Ukraine in the opener. Johan Elmander started in the lone forward role last night, with Markus Rosenberg dropping to the bench, Jonas Olsson came in at centre-half, which allowed Andreas Granqvist to move to right-back and, in midfield, Anders Svensson was given a start in the centre, with Rasmus Elm moving to the left and Ola Toivonen dropping out.

Olof Mellberg’s goal and assist helped the 5.0 priced centre half to a 10 point haul, while Seb Larsson’s owners picked up a five point return after the Sunderland man provided an assist for Mellberg’s goal. Zlatan Ibrahimovic had six efforts against Hodgson’s side but failed to find the net last night as his side were stunned by a Walcott-inspired comeback. With 22.7% ownership and a game against France up next before he boards the flight home, the Milan man is the most susceptible of Hamren’s men to a price drop over the next day or so, bearing in mind that knockout stage wildcards are available once the final couple of Group A games kick off at 7.30pm tomorrow.

At Joachim Löw's last press conference, he went out of his way to let nothing slip about the German line-up for the Denmark game. "The simplest solution would be to play Lars Bender or Benedikt Höwedes at right-back", said the German coach. "But I've also got one or two other solutions in mind as to what could be best for the team."

Bender hasn't played at right-back this season either for Bayer Leverkusen, or for the national team, but we don't know what's on Löw's mind, and it's futile to speculate as to what he's planning. Toni Kroos has been whinging today about not being selected and the team's poor performances, but again, this may or may not have an impact on whether Löw selects him.

Normally, one of the Bayern Munich players will let something slip to a friendly journalist, but it isn't happening in this tournament. There's one more press conference later this afternoon, which Löw has been forced by UEFA against his will to attend, but no-one's expecting any line-up revelations.

It's notable, however, that Oliver Bierhoff has emphasised that Germany are still unsure of qualifying. A one-goal defeat against Denmark, against whom they don't have a great recent record, would put them out.

Exactly the same news for the forwards - nothing is emerging as to Löw's plans. Can't understand why people keep saying on here that they know what the German line-up is going to be. This isn't how football works - there's a news blackout from the DFB.

Order of Extreme Valour – FFS Friendly World Cup – Matchday 2 Award

(READ THIS FIRST: THIS IS THE AWARD FOR PLAYERS OF FFS FRIENDLY WORLD CUP ONLY AND DOES NOT INCLUDE PEOPLE FROM FFS EURO 2012! THERE HAS BEEN A SEPARATE AWARD FOR THAT. THANK YOU.)

You can tell it's a good week when you can't even include in the honourable mentions highly credible punts which registered some success - players such as Krohn-Dehli, Obraniak, Gerrard, Larsson, Welbeck and Coentrao. Even picking Rami over Lescott... you know who you are. No, this week was a bumper week. An absolutely huge week. I almost didn't want to create a winner because that meant creating losers... fortunately, I quickly snapped out of that and returned to being a cold-hearted, merciless tyrant.

I judged the award by the rules posted here.
    http://uefaffs.weebly.com/7/post/2012/06/the-order-of-extreme-valour.html
    To recap:

A “successful gamble” is defined as a single player choice that returns an unexpectedly high number of points. The awards will be given on these criteria:
    - Underappreciation
    - Overachievement
    - Underdog team
    - Captaincy

    Honourable Mentions:
    - Teddy, James_Fitz for picking Jakub 'Kuba' Blaszczykowski (8 points) who smashed a sublime curling equaliser for Poland against Russia. A brave pick who flew under the radar relative to options such as Lewandowski and the Russian attack.
    - Djerbil for being the only person to pick a goal from a thoroughly unlikely source in the French midfield - Yohan Cabaye (9 points). Nominally the passer, Cabaye popped up a with a great finish to seal the win for the French - and while this is not considered in the award, he was a coat of paint away from grabbing a second goal which quite possibly would have won Djerbil the award.
    - Optimus, JKisthe1 picked a striker who was not nailed on, commonly regarded as mentally broken and in a team that could quite literally score from anywhere. Fernando Torres (10 points) grabbed two goals in the demolition of Ireland. The only major detracting factors were that Spain were the complete opposite of an underdog team, and captaincy would have helped of course.

And now for the winner. Or should I say, winners? Yes, three people - three from thirty-two - made what I regard as the most successful gamble of the week. As such, they share the title of Matchday 2 winners.

    - JKisthe1, Forca Inter and Eoin not only picked but captained Gomez (C) (10x2 points) who fired two beautifully-taken goals in the crunch match against Netherlands. With a limited competitive record for Germany thus far, and his striker starting spot only just won, all three of these managers captained him against one of the pre-tournament favourites in a match that was extremely difficult to call.

Thank you for your incredible efforts on Matchday 2. I don't know what the heck you guys are going to do on Matchday 3 - once you've been to the Dehli you wonder if you can go anywhere better - but I'm sure The Light Knight will enjoy finding out as he returns to write your reviews.

Stay tuned for our Day 1 Report and preview of Day 2!

    Chalky Hart
    Alba Bonucci Lescott Olsson Maniatis
    Inestia Pirlo Pilau Dzagoev Nasri
    Ronaldo Benzema Jelly

    Zero in the bank

    A. Olsson/Manaitis to Limbersky?
    B. Ronaldo to RVP?

    RMT:

Maggio is a doubt to start, it might be beneficial to consider Buffon and Debuchy (instead of Lloris). It saves you 0.5 million as well I believe.

(I'm new so don't bite too hard)

There have been reports of 3-4 changes in the Italian team and I believe Demi SUGGESTED Maggio might be the one to miss out. With Barzagli possibly returning, one of the defenders has to go. The proposal of Buffon and Debuchy will remove any doubts of starting and save him money.

Maggio is playing in midfield and is very unlikely to be affected

Good trades. I have a feeling Wazza will only assist one.

I read here Huntelaar should start for Holland. That means alongside RVP ?

Yep, with Afellay dropped imo. So RVP-Huntelaar-Robben and Sneijder behind.

Thanks. Was thinking CR7 > RVP for free. But if he plays on wing, I guess it's not really worth it.

Most probably with RVP and Robben out wide, supporting him.

    Andersen Tyton
    Debuchy/Alba Berezutski Maggio Strinic Lebrowski
    Iniesta/Nasri Dzagoev Kuba Pilar Marchisio
    Gomez Torres Benzema

Think I'm fairly settled on my WC. Bit unsure on Debuchy/Alba or Iniesta/Nasri. Any thoughts on that or generally? Really need to catch my rival, can't afford to cough up £50!

Watch Tyton. Have money in the bank for Szczesny

      And who the heck Lebowski?

Don't get the love for Marchisio. Not a goal scorer, not a creator. Have to find the money for Pirlo.
