Paul Lambert’s first foray into the transfer market as manager of Aston Villa saw the midlands outfit snap up Karim El Ahmadi from Feyenoord last week. The 27-year-old arrives on a three-year contract for around £2.5m and will help address the gap left in the Villa midfield after club skipper Stiliyan Petrov was diagnosed with leukaemia in the latter part of last season:

With his central midfield options largely limited, Lambert’s move to boost the ranks is an obvious one. The new Villa boss prioritised the signing of El Ahmadi shortly after arriving at Villa Park and expects the defensive midfielder to make a substantial impact in the Premier League, as he looks to improve on the club’s 16th place finish under the previous boss, Alex McLeish.

Karim is a player who I feel could definitely improve our squad. He has experience of big club football and also at international level. He can pass the ball well and he could be an important player for us in central midfield.

The Statistics

El Ahmadi was snapped up by Dutch club Twente as a youngster and progressed through the youth academy before being handed a professional contract. His debut came as a 19-year-old in the 2003-04 season and over his five years at the club, he showed plenty versatility by playing on the right of midfield and in defence, in addition to featuring through the centre. In total, he made 89 league appearances for Twente, scoring three times and providing six assists.

His displays as a combative defensive midfielder caught the eye of Feyenoord and, in April 2008, El Ahmadi signed a five-year deal to join the Eredivisie club the following season. After a couple of campaigns as a regular, El Ahmadi was loaned out to Al-Ahli FC in the United Arab Emirates before returning in time to produce his most successful season at the club last time out. Under the guidance of Ronald Koeman, El Ahmadi returned two goals and five assists as the club finished second in the Dutch top-flight and clinched a Champions League slot for the season ahead. His time at Feyenoord produced four goals and seven assist from 94 games, while El Ahmadi has also picked up experience on the international stage, turning out for Morocco on 17 occasions and finding the net once.

The Prospects

While the above-mentioned stats hardly look the most enticing, El Ahmadi’s arrival could help provide a better balance at the back for Villa in the season ahead. As manager of Norwich in the previous campaign, Lambert saw his side concede in all 19 of their away games, with just three clean sheets produced at Carrow Road; clearly, a more combative player who is willing to sit in front of the back-four and break up the opposition’s play will be vital, given Lambert’s attacking ethos.

A low to mid-price valuation across the Fantasy games can be expected, with a cost of around 5.0 – 5.5 looking likely in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game but he could struggle for investment, given his limited attacking returns – more attacking options such as Charles N’Zogbia or even Stephen Ireland will hold greater appeal in Lambert’s midfield from a FPL perspective.

Indeed, it seems likely that El Ahmadi’s tackles and passes may be more suitable for the new bonus rule in the Sky game; coming in at just 4.7, the Moroccan, who was nicknamed “The Governor” in Holland due to his influence in the middle of the park, should prove better value there. Commenting on the style of play the Villa fans can expect, he revealed:

As a player, I always want to have the ball and that is my main quality. I always want the ball and to dictate the game. That’s what I did at Feyenoord and hopefully I can show the fans, the club and the manager my quality.

Certainly, analysis of their opening schedule suggests Villa have the potential to produce over the early stages. Home clashes against Everton, Swansea and West Brom look prosperous, while trips to West Ham and Southampton are also on the agenda by Gameweek 5, handing El Ahmadi the perfect opportunity to hit the ground running in his new surroundings.

Seems like a season where it's all about bargains in the Top 6 itself

    Giroud 9m
    Kagawa 8.5m (MID)
    Tevez 9m
    Torres 9+ m
    Ade 9m
    Barfa 8+ m (MID)

There really is no need to invest in the likes of Rooney or Aguero?

But you're not going to rotate them so what does that matter?
Unless you mean rotating the captaincy in which case I guess you have a point but I'd still look at Spurs/Chelsea/Arsenal fixtures when Rooney or Aguero had a toughy.

Nevertheless they should think of changing the provider next year and get a new marketing manager. Come on, how difficult is to run twitter page? Well if I was project director.... This wouldn't have gone not noticed..

Well we'll wait will give them all the time they need, no problem but can them please be more careful and plan things better? Maybe start earlier next year or do it on another duplicate page. Imagine if this happens to Amazon while they are changing prices.

All the support as it possible from me to FPL but please get this thing right this time.

        Thanks,

ISM provide the game itself, I don't believe they provide any marketing of the game on behalf of the Premier League. I doubt very much they have any say in what goes up on an official Premier League twitter stream.

Comparing this to amazon is idiotic to say the least, there is literally no way to compare the 2. The game doesn't need to go live until the week of the season start really.

It is easy to say. It's also easy to do. There are no 'sides' here - I don't think they're intentionally winding you up.

Also, apart from today's tweet what exactly have they done wrong so far this pre-season? What makes you think it should already be open? You appear to be expecting them to perform to targets which you've thought up, not the ones they've presumably created internally.

Tevez being only 9.0M sucks since if he gets game time then his upside is potentially huge, (think Norwich away last season, and 09/10 and 10/11 seasons). He'll surely be in everyone's team if he starts regularly and it will make the game boring. I was pleased with 9.0M for players like Sigurdsson since he is not an automatic pick at that price so some will plump for him, some won't.

Now if Tevez doesn't get regular game time, then his price will be irrelevant since no one will have him, and so he may as well be expensive anyway just in case a huge amount of injuries sideline all of Man City's attacking players forcing Tevez to be a regular.

It was the same for J Evans last season, no excuse to have him starting at 4.5M just because he isn't a regular, and all the other Man Utd defenders costing 6.5M to 8.0M. Sh*t can happen like Vidic's injury which suddenly promotes Evans and then he becomes near essential, whereas if he started at 6.0M then not everyone would have jumped on him when Vidic was out.

You really should reread my post since I cover both angles. He could play loads or he could be benched. My argument is that the safer thing for FPL to do is to price him high assuming that he will get a lot of game time, so that if in fact you are correct and he's just a bench warmer, then it won't matter if he costs 10.5M or 11.0M since all serious players will not own him anyway since he doesn't score points, and any casual or retarded players that STILL buy him in, will just be wasting 11.0M on a player that doesn't get points which is fine because it's a huge error that they are making getting in a player that doesn't play and they are rightfully getting punished by having loads of their cash tied up in him too.

well we can only recover financially if all the big name players leave and the wage bill is brought down from 10m a year to about 2/3m.

Part of me wants us to be liquidated because we have defrauded so many businesses over the 3 times we have been in administration yet on every occasion nothing has changed. Starting afresh might be for the best

RVP and tevez swap clubs the only way tevez becomes worth while even at 9

    in other news

Liverpool and Fulham in talks over Charlie Adam as part of the Clint Dempsey deal. Fulham have also registered an interest in Andy Carroll.

Any news on when the actual game starts or is it more of 3 prices a day (tedious)

yet more in the 9m ish price range. Lots of choice there. Giroud's price tag places him firmly in the 'hmmm, I'll wait and see" category.
