Twelve down and just several hundred to go, then. For the fourth successive day we were handed three more player values from the official Fantasy Premier League (FPL) twitter stream to mull over, with last season’s top scoring midfielder amongst them. Tomorrow, we learn the fate of another trio, including a couple of promoted players, Kevin Nolan and Rickie Lambert…

Clint Dempsey has been handed a valuation of 9.5 for the upcoming campaign. After returning 17 goals, seven assists and 22 FPL bonus points last term, the US international accrued a total of 209 points – leaving Gareth Bale trailing in his wake in the midfield charts by 14 points. The new cost sees Dempsey’s starting value rise by 1.0 from 2011/12 and still looks fairly reasonable for a player who proved a strong captaincy option, with eight double figure returns and a points per game (ppg) average of 5.6 in FPL.

Looking at the other prices so far, this mirrors the price tag of Chelsea’s Eden Hazard, though the Belgian’s classification still remains unclear. The pricing could, perhaps, be a hint towards the rest of the midfield values – last season saw Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard arrive at 12.0 and 11.0 respectively but if Dempsey, as last term’s top scorer, costs 9.5, then it’s feasible that this will be close to the ceiling for midfield prices. In the Sky Sports game, Dempsey is fifth costliest midfielder available – a price of 8.6 is indicative of his exploits last time round, with David Silva the dearest option at 9.0.

Perhaps a little surprisingly, Luis Suarez keeps the same starting price as the previous campaign. Despite a hugely disappointing season, the Uruguayan remains at 9.5 – on a par with Papiss Cisse and more than both Carlos Tevez (9.0) and Nikica Jelavic (8.5). Clearly, FPL reckon he is capable of producing the goods this time round after notching just 136 points from 31 appearances – an average of 4.4 ppg. Bearing in mind that Cisse averaged 7.5 ppg after joining Newcastle in January, a punt on the Magpies forward looks more appealing at that price, though the Brendan Rodgers effect may well see Suarez prosper as a Fantasy force in the season ahead. Sky Sports have also maintained faith is the Liverpool man – Suarez is the fourth most expensive frontman at 9.6, just behind Wayne Rooney (9.8).

Finally today, we learned that Jonathan Walters will come in at 6.5 in FPL next season – crucially, though, we still don’t know if the Stoke player will be listed as a midfielder or forward for the campaign ahead. Although classified as a midfielder last term, Walters started the vast majority of his games up front and, for the first half of the season at least, was a strong out-of-position alternative. Tony Pulis did, however, start him in midfield in nine of the Potters’ fixtures – clearly, the Irishman would receive far more Fantasy interest if he remained a midfielder, though the idea is admittedly unlikely. The Sky Sports game certainly agrees; Walters comes in as a 7.9 priced forward there and, with spot-kicks under his belt, offers a cheaper alternative to Peter Crouch at 8.8 for Pulis’ side.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

love fpl and waiting for the game to be up. Surely lessons can be learnt from how the mcdonalds game and how swiftly the game was updated. I know they had less players playing but surely fpl can expand their servers somewhat with the increasing amount of popularity the game is seeing.
Also it might be worth employing a few more people to handle the growing workload.

Just an idea, hope to see the game up soon but the releasing of prices via twitter does nothing for me. Cute idea but would rather have updates on the game and what fresh features they are bringing to the table (if any)

I wouldn't mind a note on their website saying. FPL returning on the following date. Unfortunately I am not sure they know themselves when it will be back. I am not saying that to knock fpl but it just seems the organisation is a bit all over the place and nobody actually knows what's going on.

It was always a publicity stunt - well hyped tho and the Lead fence at press conference a big joke but fact is 30000 turned up to watch & they made millions on PPV.

The sport has no longer got the qualities to sell itself so they have to "act" even more.

It was not a bad fight but Haye outclassed him - but who is Chisora - a Brit with an average record!

I think I'm going to do better at FPL this year.

    1. Follow form over fixtures.
    2. Use OPTA stats to identify key players in every team.
    3. Don't be afraid to jump on a bandwagon early.
    4. Keep the faith if a well reasoned punt doesn't pay off that Saturday.
    5. Stop thinking outside the box and trying to be a smart arse.

      1. I tend to follow fixtures more than form
      3. I'd rather be 1 week late than 3 weeks early
      4./5. +1

        1. Liverpool in a rut couldn't beat anyone. Newcastle flying could. Similar story with an out-of-sorts Chelsea and Man City sides last year. I like going fixtures over form, but will look out for teams playing well/badly and take advantage.

OPTA stats seem to be key for sky game. Swayed me to become a member again. Also I like the handy access to the player position chart.
I never follow no1 enough. But your tactics are sound.

There used to be loads of weak teams in the Prem (without making enemies). There really aren't any more - well, not of the same cr@pness. Teams go on bad runs and that's when you need to have the opposition key players in your team to take advantage.

To be honest Parm, all I hear United fans say is 'We didn't have Vidic'. The return of Vidic will be a boost by no means, but United still lack another striker imo. City fans could've easily had said 'If we had Tevez the whole season, we would've won the title yonks before'.

Image classification through low-level feature analysis 🙄

I'd say just keep digging away, I eventually found an ideal paper which I could then back-reference to fill out the literature review. Good luck.

The 'support the site' argument is another thing entirely and i completely understand that (i've been a fully paid up member every year since they started charging) but i wouldn't expect a great deal of help from the members info. It's effect is negligible imo.

I've paid the past two years and my thoughts are thus:

        1) I put more value on my own time than the equivalent effort of putting together my own ticker (or in English, I'm happy to pay someone else to make the adjustable speadsheet of fixtures)
        2) Beyond "1" I don't get a lot more out of the site by paying but think that the people who put it together should have their efforts financially rewarded.
        3) Having said "1" & "2" I find I do much better when I pay no attention to this site whatsoever. 🙂

I actually agree with you on all three so far. So far becoming a regular and a member has given me little exclusive information but completely overloaded me in conflicting information (people arguing the pros and cons of players). Absorb too much conflicting information and you make poor decisions. This year with the positional information there will be a huge amount of exclusive information. I will simply have to absorb less conflicting information...

Silva is so important to City, almost too important - they could use another creative / flair midfielder
Chelsea have a great squad but perhaps lacking a striker in Drogbas absence, and SAF / Mancini bring more to their teams than Di Matteo, their defence fell apart at times last season also
United are reliant on Rooney and lack a DM in Fletchers absence, while their defence is both ageing and under-developed

City worthy favourites but those 3 are gonna be really close

I think during that period they threw away a 8-10 point lead was it? Some 0-0s and 1-0 defeats maybe? And it took a ridiculous last second winner and stupid results from United for them to take it

Sorry, what I'm trying to get at is that Silva isn't the most detrimental part of City's success. Credit where its due, he's truly magnificent. A great player. But when he's not ticking they scrape the results and he's not truly dependable. Toure, Aguero and Kompany more important imo.

Their defence is very good, which was key to their title last season, but their formation without proper wingers requires pin-point passing moves - and he's the key player in all that

nasri is a perfect substitute for silva in theory, no?

utd should be fighting spurs for moutinho's signature methinks; he not only adds a little steel but can rotate the ball more quickly than carrick (and isn't 90 years old like scholes).

as a utd fan i'm mega worried about chelsea this season 🙁 not to mention spurs and liverpool embarking on continental-style projects while we continue to build for our increasingly outdated 4-4-1-1...

I kinda fear Chelsea more than city this year as well
VERY impressed with Carrick last year, thought he had many games where his passing was inch-perfect but agree Fletcher needs replacing
Moutinho's decent but I'd prefer the steel of Tiote

carrick had his best season for quite some time, and there's no doubt he can thread a pass through the eye of a needle *if he's given time*. he's also reliable positionally and makes some crucial interceptions. the problem is how clumsy he starts to look when he's pressed; his first touch isn't the best and he can't be trusted against a team like bilbao for example.

I do agree, I think he lacks the confidence in his personality to work under pressure and really take a game by the scruff of the neck
It seemed that in Scholes absence he was forced to step up and it worked

Probably crazy but might be one if those players that would be enhanced by the captaincy

spurs will get lloris and moutinhio plus another striker, wilshere wont even play for half the season, spurs squad has improved whereas arsenals will have stayed the same by losing rvp (Y), considering they only finished above spurs by 1 point with RVP, i think you know where this is going.

so you mentioned the likes of miyachi and frimpong but not players like livermore, caulker and rose? hmmmm.

that said, i do think the loss of modric is almost as much of a blow as the loss of RVP, and it'll all depend on the rest of spurs' signings. at the moment their first team is gonna look something like

          -----------adebayor
          bale-------------------VDV
          --------sigurdsson
          ---moutinho?--parker
          ekotto--vert---kaboul--walker
          -----------lloris?

and even then, parker and VDV are far from ideal. he needs signings signings signings.

As i Liverpool fan this season i would be happy with 6th. 5th tops. Best thing that happened was Rodgers. Imagine if they had got Guardiola or similar ( i know no chance), the expectations would have been through the roof. Now at least people are realising it is going to take time.
Think United need to spend big on a couple more players to stay close to City though. I know they pushed all the way this season but this has been the weakest Utd squad for a while. Thats not bitterness being a Liverpool fan as i am also a football fan an even though it kills me i enjoy the football they play but they cant rely on Scholes and Giggs forever.

you're in the same sort of situation as spurs, you're nearly there.... obviously players like bellamy, downing, henderson, adam and of course gerrard can fit into those gaps, but i suspect rodgers' new generation is going to ultimately bypass those guys - they're either too old for a revolution or too old-school english. maybe henderson is an exception? what do you reckon?

Agree, think Henderson may come good. Think he has taken a hit in confidence. Downing definitely has. Scared to attack people, scared to give the ball away, looks a different player. Dont think Adam is mobile enough for Rodgers style. Bellamy would be perfect but has knee problems and struggles for consistent games. Still think Gerrard is class an can adapt, may drop deeper. Also Aquilani is a pass an move player. In the past he was playing passes but the players around him did not anticipate them and he looked poor and was frustrated. This is his type of game.Personally think Rodgers will bring through some youth. Got Sterling and Suso who should be pushing this season. Main criticism of Kenny was 20 minutes to go he brought on Aurelio, what was he going to learn from that? Agree with the Spurs comment, so close to being brilliant.

rodgers isn't gonna want his wide forwards hugging the touchline, taking potshots or being defensively indisciplined. i can't see downing making it but ynever know. yeah, i figure aquilani could be central to this new era and liverpool fans should be excited by that.

            what about coates?
