Michael Laudrup’s first move as manager of Swansea saw Spanish central defender Jose Manuel Flores sign from Serie A outfit Genoa in a deal thought to be in the region of £2m. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year deal and re-unites with the new Swans boss, having previously worked under the Dane at Mallorca…

The transfer goes some way to addressing the gap left in Swansea’s central defence after Steven Caulker returned to parent club Tottenham following a successful loan spell at the Liberty Stadium last season, with Flores, or “Chico” as he is known, set to partner Ashley Williams in the heart of the back-four. Similar to fellow new boy Jonathan De Guzman, the 6 foot 2 inch stopper revealed the chance to work with Laudrup again was a key factor in his move to the Welsh club, going on to say:

“He knows me as a person and a player, so I was honoured when the call came. I believe the manager will be good for Swansea and they have done extremely well to get him. Swansea’s way of playing is the same style as he wants to play the game. He is the right person to take this club forward. Being brought up in Spain, I have the same culture of possession and passing football. I like to play from the back, come forward with the ball, and add to the possession game.”

The Statistics

The centre-half began his career as an 18-year old with hometown club Cadiz. After a couple of seasons in the reserves, Flores was promoted to the first-team but made just three appearances before being sent out on loan to the Spanish lower leagues during the 2007-08 campaign. Spells at Racing Club Portuense and Barcelona B harvested five goals in 32 games for the clubs before La Liga side Almeria came calling.

Over the course of a couple of campaigns, Flores played 47 times and scored a single goal – his displays in helping the club to a solid 13th place finish in 2009-10 caught the eye of Genoa and the centre-half moved to Italy in the summer of 2010 on a five-year deal. He failed to impress during his one season in Serie A, however, and, with just 15 appearances under his belt in his debut campaign, was loaned to Mallorca last term with the Spanish side given an option to make the deal permanent. Back in his native country, Flores came to the fore and was an integral part of the first-team, making 33 appearances, with his reading of the game and ability to intercept his opponents’ play one of the most impressive across Europe’s top five leagues last season.

The Prospects

While many fear a drop in Swansea’s potential following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, Laudrup is keen for his new charges to maintain their slick passing game as the Welsh club look to avoid “second season syndrome” after last term’s 11th place finish. His ability on the ball should see Flores fit seamlessly into the club’s system and with 14 clean sheets accrued in 2011/12, Fantasy managers may be eyeing up the Swans backline once again.

The major issue this time round is pricing, however. Michel Vorm came in at 4.0 in the previous campaign but his heroics between the posts have already seen his starting price soar this time round, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuing him at 5.5. “Chico” has been handed a 5.0 starting price by the FPL in today’s published price list, putting him on a par with established starters Angel Rangel, Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams. Unless he can display some attacking threat or start soaking up some EA PPI points from king of the blocks, Williams, Flores will surely take a back seat, then.

Intriguingly, Flores has been slapped with a relatively low price in the Sky Sports game in comparison to his defensive team-mates. His 5.0 valuation is considerably less than Williams’ 6.9, with Rangel the next cheapest option at 5.7. In this game, then, the new boy looks an enticing prospect for those Fantasy managers looking for a route into Laudrup’s defence.

A kind opening schedule only furthers his appeal. Home clashes with (WHM, SUN, EVE) in the first five Gameweeks are allied with trips to QPR and Villa and offer Laudrup a strong platform to kick off his career at the Liberty Stadium in style. Whether Fantasy managers will be celebrating every Swansea clean sheet in a similar manner to last season is more than a little unlikely, though.

    1st draft RMT

    De Gea, Federici
    Lescott, Kaboul, Boyce, Fabio, Gorkss
    Hazard, Ramires, Kagawa, Pienaar, Noble
    Aguero, Torres, Graham

I'm thinking I save the transfer GW2 then kneejerk 2 of the Chelsea players out.

Aguero is quality. I guess it depends on the transfer market but I think he should be fairly rotation free.

I'm not comfortable about Torres but its just for a week or two because of the double.

Yeah, Graham is definitely in my team. One of the top scoring strikers in the game last season with great fixtures GW1-8 and a 6m price tag.

      Hey Milanista.
Pretty good team actually, Boyce is a flair pick but I wouldn't touch a Wigan defender myself.
Not a fan of Ramires from an fpl perspective i'd prefer a Chelsea defender instead,
Actually your team is similar to mine. In the front 8 I've only got Cisse and Hoolahan instead of Ramires and Graham.

Allen too. That is my point, too much emphasis is being placed on Caulker & Sigurdsson leaving, I'm not saying they're not good footballers but didn't Swansea have better results in the 1st half of the season when they were injured/not there.

Had a really good opportunity to look through the prices, potential 15 man squads and things like quite straight forward. No midfielder over £10 million, VFM in many areas where generic teams will be ten to the dozen....

Is their a twist to the game yet to be unveiled. I am sure I am wrong but how about a squad made up of 2 keepers, 4 defenders, 5 mids and 4 forwards. That £100 million budget would be a challenge then!!!
Afterall, how many seasoned pro's with FPL use the full allocation of 5 defenders???

    Anyhow, silly idea's over....

I can't see them doing that. The formations allowed require at-least 3 defenders but only 1 attacker in some. So you don't really need 4 attackers as you can only use 3 in one formation. Unless they let us use crazy formations like 2-5-3.

Anyone else getting tempted by Tevez instead of Aguero and using the 2.5m elsewhere?

Mancini has been talking up Carlos' attitude and deployed him through the middle with Aguero out wide in today's friendly.

Obviously it could all be a rouse to get Milan to bid for him, but if he stays, I think I will go with Tevez.

Silva will not be nailed on either, he will be rotated/subbed off early. Most nailed on in the mid is Yaya, am tempted by him. But Aguero WILL play GW1, so CL to worry about, it's later on we have to worry.

2 WBA defenders and Odem - a Baggies fan? Are you getting Baines because you think he's going to Man Utd?

I like the midfield, but have you any cash to upgrade either Odem or Vaz Te, as having both seems a bit weak? What about Pog or Danny Graham?

Have had a good look through the prices and came up with this:

    Given Begovic
Vidic Clichy Gorkss Fonte O'Brien (Might change one of 4.0's to Nelsen QPR)
    McClean Gerrard Kagawa Bale Noble
    Torres Aguero Pogrebnyak

Beware of Nelson, he plays at the Olympics, which may have a bearing on him starting in the first 11. Plus QPR just bid for Bruno Alves, which shows their intent to upgrade that position.

Forgot about Olympics actually good point. Didn't know they bid for Alves either. IMO he should start instead of Hill though if they don't get anyone else.

Downgrade Gerrard and then up Pog to Graham/D.Cisse.

      Do your 4M defenders rotate?

If you mean rotate home and away not really but 1 of them has a good fixture each week.

any idea as to what sunderland's back line is going to be??

they kept it tight in the back after o'neil became boss man and they're start is decent.

MON has just bought Cuellar. At 4.5 he's a bargain if the defence stays tight.

    De Gea (Juice)

Cash - Clichy - Nelsen (Turner, Fonte)

Bale - Sess - Nolan - Guthrie (Pienaar)

    Aguero - Torres (c) - Bent

    Right deadline now please.

Noble over Nolan saves you 1.0m to upgrade Nelsen, who will be at the Olympics with NZ.

I think Nolan will outdo Noble quite comfortably. Didn't realise about the Olympics though, cheers.

Guth's just a name I've seen touted as a 4.5 starter. Sess I'm not certain on but if I get rid it won't be for a teammate.

well I have the choice of

        Ade
        Jelly
        Dave
        Giroud
        Podolski

or go cheap (Gerbil, Naismith, Petric, Lambert) and use the spare cash for an extra midfield big hitter

owning Ade is just as stressful as owning Suarez.

Seriously tempted to get a budget option (Lambert) and get an extra big-hitter in midfield rather than 4 cheap ones.
